What Does The Bible Say About Humility In Marriage?

The Bible emphasizes humility in marriage, guiding couples to avoid selfish ambition or vain conceit. It encourages marriage to help individuals become more humble and to love their husbands. Biblical marriage also assaults a woman’s pride by teaching her to love her husband. While the world suggests that women should focus on standing up for humility, it is important to remember that humility brings God’s grace directly into the marriage.

Humanity is beneficial for both the husband and wife, as it brings God’s grace directly into the marriage. James 4:6 states that God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Husbands should submit to their wives, as Christ is the head of the church and its Savior. Husbands should love their wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for it.

The word “humility” appears variously throughout the Bible, both in the Old and New Testaments. It is beneficial for us, God, and those around us. The world’s definition of humility includes a lack of arrogance and a feeling of inferiority. In humility, we should count others more significant than ourselves and have a mind among ourselves, which is ours in Christ Jesus.

Marriage is an honorable and undefiled union, as it was instituted by God and blessed by the Lord. It is essential to set boundaries in dating and marriage, as boasting in arrogant schemes is evil.

The Bible emphasizes the importance of humility in marriage, as it helps to maintain a proper perspective of marriage and values others above oneself. Love is patient, kind, and does not envy, boast, or arrogance. James 4:6 states that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble, and this verse is particularly relevant for those who nurture a win-at-any-cost mentality.

Humility is a fear of the Lord, and its wages are riches, honor, and wisdom. It is essential to value others above oneself and to keep your heart with all vigilance, as from it flow the springs of life. The Bible also provides numerous biblical truths about humility, such as the importance of humility in marriage, the importance of humility in love, and the importance of humility in the pursuit of wisdom. By embracing humility and valuing others above oneself, we can create a more beautiful and fulfilling marriage.

Why does God love humility?

God shows grace to humble people. James 4:6 says that God favors the humble. Pride keeps us from God’s grace. Humility means we need God and receive His grace. Forgiveness is an act of grace. The proud will not be forgiven. If you’re proud, you can’t ask for grace. God doesn’t force salvation on anyone. We humble ourselves to receive grace. #2 – God gives victory to humble people. Psalm 149:4 says, “The Lord delights in his people and crowns the humble with victory.” God wins. God wins. His followers are on the winning team. If you humble yourself before God, you may lose, but you’ll win in the end. #3: God hears humble people. Daniel prayed and God answered. Why did God answer Daniel? The angel said: “Don’t be afraid, Daniel. “Since the first day you set your mind to understand and humble yourself, your words were heard. I have come in response to them” (Daniel 10:12).

What is true humility according to the Bible?

From the HelpFinder Bible. Humility is knowing our worth as God sees us. It’s about knowing our sin but also God’s love for us.

Our blog. The Bible changes lives. Read stories from Tyndale Bible readers. Humility is knowing our worth as God sees us. It is the balance between seeing our sin and knowing God’s love for us. Pride makes us think we’re better than others, even God. But that’s wrong because it makes us think we’re not worth anything. God made us in his image and sent his Son to die for us. Jesus died for people he loves, and those people are very valuable to God. We want to see ourselves as God sees us. What is true humility? 1 Chronicles 17:16 Then King David went in and prayed, “Who am I, Lord God, that you have brought me this far?” Humility is not thinking too highly of yourself.

How does Jesus display humility?

Finally, Jesus submitted to the Father in His greatest suffering. He was humble to the end, even to being crucified. His last words show what humility is all about. After Jesus said, “It is finished,” He said that His Father’s will had been done (see Joseph Smith Translation, Matt. 27:54). He bowed his head and died. Jesus Christ, our perfect Master, taught us about humility through his words and actions. True Christians want their words and deeds to show they are humble, sorry for their sins, and willing to do what God wants. On November 2, 1995, Antonio and Roseli Berrocal of the Franca stake in São Paulo, Brazil, traveled with their five children to be sealed in the São Paulo Brazil Temple. On the way, a tragic accident killed Sister Berrocal and all the children. On the 22nd of that same month, Antonio entered the temple alone to be sealed to his family. My interview with him was a great lesson in humility. He thanked Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ for helping him through his sadness and pain. He was grateful for the ordinances. Brother Antonio is a humble man.

How can a husband show humility to his wife?

Be humble in a relationship by putting the other person first. Humility means you accept that you’re not always right and that the other person has something to offer. This is important in dating, marriage, and other relationships.

How does the Bible say a wife should treat her husband?

Wives, submit to your husbands. The husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church. The church submits to Christ, so wives should submit to their husbands.

What makes a good wife according to the Bible?

The ideal wife in Proverbs is loyal, happy, capable, and strong. She is the perfect helper for her man. A wife is the best thing a man can have. She makes him better. What does it mean that she is the “crown” of her husband? She shows everyone that this man should be honored and respected. She makes her family rich and respects her husband, encouraging her children and others to do the same. A wife who shames her husband is like cancer in his bones. A wife who shames her man leaves him a shell of what he might have been. A worthless husband often leaves his wife destitute and worn out. What does this proverb mean for those who are not married? Choose well. Young people don’t know much. So maybe the older parents should choose, as in many cultures? Parents may not always think about their children’s best interests. Where does a good wife come from? “A wife is inherited from fathers, but a wise wife is from the LORD (Proverbs 19:14).” So the wise young person who wants to marry should pray for a good wife and she should pray for a good husband.

What does humility look like in relationships?

Show humility by not trying to impress, being honest about your strengths and weaknesses, and listening to others. Humility means you accept that you’re not always right and others have something to offer. This is important in dating, marriage, and other relationships.

Let go of the need to impress by appearing perfect. Acknowledge your shortcomings and strengths. Let the other person express themselves by listening. Set aside your judgment. Be curious, not critical, when he has a different opinion. Humility means accepting differences. Couples who see me for therapy often think their partner is wrong for wanting to do things differently. One spouse might be more authoritarian than the other when raising children. One is more liberal, the other more conservative. Morning person or night owl? Vegetarian or carnivore. And so on.

What is the role of humility in marriage?

Humility? You may be wondering what this has to do with marriage. Without humility, there can’t be true love or effective communication in a marriage. Nobody is born humble. Humility is a choice. It’s a choice you make when you think or act in a humble way. Humility makes you lovable and attractive. What is humility? Humility is often seen as a spiritual or religious quality. Humility is not just a thought, but also a feeling. Webster’s 1828 online dictionary defines humble as: Lowly; modest; meek; submissive; opposed to proud, haughty, arrogant, or assuming.

How should husbands treat their wives according to God?

This passage also tells husbands what to do. 1 Peter 3:7 says, “Husbands, be kind to your wives. Treat them with respect. They are weaker than you and share the gift of life with you. This will help you pray.” First, let’s debunk a lie about Christianity. The Bible doesn’t promote oppression of women. The world has said this so often that some in the church believe it. The world says God won’t give women the best things because He’s withholding them. These include a career outside the home, freedom to have sex, independence from men, and being in charge of men. In the 1960s, the feminist movement wanted to change traditional standards and have these things they had been denied. The results are in. This has created a lot of single-parent homes. Two-income families have a lot of stuff, but many children are left to raise themselves or are raised by schools and daycares. Divorce has increased a lot. Men are lost and create more trouble. Most women still feel unfulfilled, even though they have what the world told them God was withholding. Some men have mistreated women in the name of Christianity, but God has a plan to bless women. His plan is in his order of things. When a husband and wife follow God’s plan for their lives, they are fulfilled and blessed. This makes children who know God and have a good life!

  • To everyone reading this, this is a sign to please keep going. No matter how stuck you feel, no matter how bad things are right now, no matter how hopeless and depressed you feel, no matter how many days you have spent wishing things were different. I promise you won’t feel this way forever. Keep going. Jesus loves you!

  • If you are reading this, I wish you the best in your walk with God! James 1:21 (ERV) – ” So get rid of everything evil in your lives—every kind of wrong you do. Be humble and accept God’s teaching that is planted in your hearts. This teaching can save you.” YOU ARE AMAZING AND HAVE AN AMAZING DAY!!! 😎✝️❤️🙂

  • I am so performance driven that it can easily become a bondage. Perfectionism is an offshoot of pride and it is exhausting and can leave you as an emotional wreck since your view of yourself fluctuates based on how well you performed. God has been helping me focus that He wants me and not my performance and that has helped me to stop putting pressure on myself and just enjoy my relationship with him. Would love a teaching on this..Bless you guys.

  • Omg this article was so eye opening. I realized how prideful I am and how much I put down those around me to exalt myself. I’ve realized this has been my issue. Everything I do has been about me, instead of about God. Thank you for this. God has anointed you and your ministry and He has shown me this article. Thank you so much

  • I’m having one of my biggest tribulations with my beloved family that I have ever proched, and I was looking for guidance, and I now have an approach. Thank you for this article. Even if I wasn’t religious, I’d find wisdom in the lessons of the Bible. I don’t believe that the Bible is an accurate depiction of what Jesus said, and did, but regardless of your beliefs, it is a resource that can teach you humanities.

  • Pride has to be broken in us….usually through being humbled through testing and trials…. The Lord is with us in them but we must stay steadfast and stick with him however frustrating, long and arduous Faith, grace and greater humility will come to us Keep working out your salvation….in progressive fear(reverance) love and respect for our saviour ✝️🙏❤️

  • It always amazes me that God incarnate came and LIVED amongst us for 33 heckin years. Amongst our ridiculousness and sin. Amongst people that were so sure they were good and smart. Amongst injustice every day. That is crazier to me than that He was scorned and mocked over like 12 hours. I feel like living with us for 33 years before all that is more than He should have ever had to deal with. But He did, because He loved us.

  • What I sometimes do when I am faced with temptations and difficult problems, I try to say what would Jesus do? And it helps. If you haven’t already you should try and I hope and trust that everyone reading this right now the Lord will Bless you, keep you and cause his face to shine upon you and give you peace AMEN.

  • I needed this. Pride is looking down on others. I’ve done this my whole life, not realising it was a sin. And I’ve beaten myself up for not being my ideal version of myself, thinking it was humility. How wrong I was! No! Every good thing I have is just a small sample of the wonderful things God has prepared for everyone! Abba Father! Thank You for this article! Thank You for reminding me that everything wonderful about me is just a sample of how amazing You Are, Lord Jesus! You Are the amazing One! I’m just a pale reflection of Your glorious self! How could I have been so blind for so very long? Thank You for restoring to me my sight!

  • Great! I thought myself humble and self pity on myself struggling with sin lust and my faith also lacked but God delivered me from this sin word of God came to me. It’s like God asking me where is your faith. All around me word faith comes to me from every where. when Iam turn back to God with believing spirit after watch this vedio Iam realise that there is difference between pride and Godly confidence. Root of every sin is pride and fear.. Iam look down on people, friends, pride of my gifts and talents. I’m too much perfectionist in my work. But that perfectionism exhaust me and I am obsessed, stressed and tensioned and caught into anxiety But God delivered and healed me from all physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Now Iam feel the deep calmness, peace, love and clarity within me and presence of Holy spirit.

  • Great tips! I’ve struggled with fornication more than anything else but it also goes along with pride. Slowly my prayers became more and more focused with the idea that I can’t fight it and turning around to me rather than God and when that happened, lust became more prevalent and pride alongside it in a way I didn’t recognize it. I dealt with before when it came to my peers and now I feel love for them, but I didn’t recognize it when it came into prayer life until today! I do need prayers to be delivered from fornication though, and I need to turn my eyes back to what the LORD has for me knowing I’ll never be satisfied by lust has been helping too because it reminds me before I fall into it to ask the question of what’s the point and in doing so my heart goes back to God. I know I’m not the only one, but I feel that if you can conquer pride, it will have a domino effect on other fleshly desires as well!

  • “The life of a Christian is a race the we need to finish and it’s a fight that we need to fight. So when the time comes that are minds are consumed with thoughts of how great we are, let us instead FOCUS ON WHAT WE CAN DO WHILE WE ARE STILL HERE. Life is too short to dwell on thoughts of how great we are so let’s look at what God sees and do what needs be done for God’s kingdom, for people’s souls, for the encouragement of those around us, so that we too can say, “I’ve finished my race, I fought my fight, and I gave it all that I had”.” — AMEN!!! So much impact in my heart. Thank you❤

  • I’ve struggled with thinking that I’m better than most of the CP kids at my school. I’ve been gifted with book smarts, and I just let that get to my head through comparisons between how I and my CP peers act. It’s mainly bad in my Chemistry class, as that’s my only CP class whose students can get quite wild. I thought I was fighting it through not accepting my little sibling’s compliments, but one of the pastors at my church told me that I was wrong in doing so. This article helped me realize my sin, thank you.

  • I struggle with pride yet i have low self esteem especially when people try to get close to me. I sometimes view myself as better but also scared that they’ll find out my flaws. Ive realised that pride and inferiority complex are ONE. They’re not the opposite of each other. Pls pray for me. Im developing social anxiety because of these things. I need GOD’s help real bad. I cant even breathe properly in a big gathering like a church because of my anxiety. May God be with you all too.

  • Glory and praise all be to God!! I’m still struggling with this sin!! But this article has opened my perspective! I don’t wanna be selfish, or prideful or judgy. God has all the power not me. And feeling like i’m better than somebody else is a lie because i’m a sinner as well. God is only perfect!! I just hope to believe this word.

  • Yo! I am really amazed by the fact that I had casually commented/requested to make a article on “How to be humble” several months back on your article on “How to study the Bible and Pray-Whiteboard series” and you actually made a article! I really appreciate the very fact that you actually responded to my comment haha let alone actually make a article based on my request ( going by my understanding that you would be having a busy life in running your ministry!). I will always keep your family and ministry in my prayers 100% and I pray that through the spiritual success that the LORD our God pours on your ministry, His name will always be reflected, recognized and most importantly glorified! God Bless and continue doing God’s good work. (Matthew 5:16).

  • To anyone who is confused on this topic: This article unfortunately does not explain the multiple definitions of pride in the English language. This article is telling the truth and preaching it in faith but only 1 pride is a sin. To demonstrate the 2 prides, one is the opposite of humble, and the other is the opposite of ashamed. The opposite of humble is a sinful pride, but the opposite of ashamed is a sign of approval. So it is not a sin to be proud of yourself or others, listen to Paul: “I am acting with great boldness toward you; I have great pride in you; I am filled with comfort. In all our affliction, I am overflowing with joy.” – 2 Corinthians 7:4 That is the good pride, and it is not a sin

  • This article is for me. For the past like 3 days and even now I am riding the up and down emotions of an internet discussion turned fight about the place of women in the ministry. In discussing a theoretical female pastor, her motivations, and fruit, and in attempting to call out the judgment of men, I identified myself with the scenario and I’m not someone who ho actively wants to be a female pastor or even really knows any… there’s a part of my that wants to refuse to be proven wrong and that is feeling bitter and wants to win. What even is this. It has really made me feel like a lot of my progress from the past months wants to dry up and I feel so… irritated and unservantlike. It’s not about any of this. Please pray for me to see it right. Thank you. Please forgive me Lord, please help me. I’m sorry.

  • You Sir have aptly named this your website ! As indeed your articles have truly impacted me ! God Bless your work in this website of the Word ! God be Praised in his Son,s name Jesus Christ that indeed was put on that cross to suffer our torment and sin ! That we were redeemed from the hands and work of the Devil and by God,s Grace we canl find Eternal Life with him and him alone ! Amen .

  • Hi! Very good article, I thank you for the help that you give with your articles, they are not obvious, I just want to say (and also to talk, if you can), because among this things you don’t talk about confession, and I believe the Lord tells us it is necessary: to confess to the Lord not just saying what you have done, but why you did it, and searching in your heart the reason why you did it and (may be) you want to do it, without confession we can still have some difficulties (Psalm 32 talks in a stunning and amazing way of this truth). I still like what you do, your articles help a lot to, this one to define what pride is and what actually do to go against this sin, I’m also going against this…

  • TODAY Have you met with the Lord today? Is He by your side? Come now, let us read His word And by His truth abide Have you felt the Holy Spirit today? Confirming you rest in Him? That swelling feeling inside yourself Which fills you to the brim Have you spoke to God today? Through Christ Almighty in prayers In praise and thanksgiving, telling all Because you know He cares Have you witnessed for Jesus today? Telling about His salvation Don’t you know He has loved you Since the beginning of creation Shirley ❤

  • This article was so Epic! Thank you so much for making it! I was taught so much! I had a request too, could you make a article answering the question “Can Christians swear?” I stopped swearing/cursing a few years ago because I believed that since I am a Christian I shouldn’t swear. One of my friends started to swear recently and I wanted to tell him to stop swearing because he’s a Christian, but then I didn’t know how to explain why he shouldn’t swear anymore. Because I didn’t know a good reason why Christians shouldn’t swear, I know some verses in Colassians say to not use bad words but then I was confused as to what determines a word as “bad” or not, so I’m very confused and I don’t know what to tell him. I love not swearing and it has changed my life in a great way but it might not be for everyone. So could you please make a article answering that question? It would be so awesome and I would really appreciate it a lot! Either way your website has really helped me get closer to God! Thank you!!!!

  • I suffer from pride I think. It’s not because I feel like I’m some great mind gifting the world with my machinations but I do find myself (especially in traffic) belittling others for my perception of their lack of intelligence. It hits before I even realize it often and I will rebuke myself sometimes when it happens but it doesn’t do much to dissuade the thoughts until I’ve had a moment to move on. I need prayers for these sorts of short comings. I need to say these things to people who know me, not the YouTube crowd. It’s always seemed so weird to me to see people put themselves out there on platforms like this asking for prayers. But here I am. Probably because this shortcoming is embarrassing proof of my immaturity to those who know me.

  • 1 Corinthians 4:3-5 NIV‬‬\r I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.

  • If you are reading this, I wish you the best in your walk with God! ✝️ Isaiah 32:6 – “Fools say foolish things, and in their minds they plan evil things to do. They want to do what is wrong. They say bad things about the Lord. They don’t let hungry people eat their food. They don’t let thirsty people drink the water.” ⭐️💗 YOU ARE AMAZING AND HAVE AN AMAZING DAY!!! 😎✝️❤️🙂

  • Fasting is a very effective method of humbling ourselves. It draws us closer to God and clears our mind. Psalm 69:10 AMPC When I wept and humbled myself with fasting, I was jeered at and humiliated; 1 Kings 21:27-29 AMPC When Ahab heard those words of Elijah, he tore his clothes, put sackcloth on his flesh, fasted, lay in sackcloth, and went quietly. And the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, Do you see how Ahab humbles himself before Me? Because he humbles himself before Me, I will not bring the evil in his lifetime, but in his son’s day I will bring the evil upon his house.

  • Step 1 – look at yourself through God’s eyes. “In the sight of the Lord.” Step 2 – look at other people through God’s eyes. (Won’t see as better or worse for worldly reasons.) Volunteer your time to serve the people who Jesus puts right in front of you. “What are we doing for the people Jesus died for?” Step 3 – look at ministry through God’s eyes. It’s service of others. Let’s look at what God sees and do what needs to be done for the salvation of souls and the encouragement of those around us. And I’d add – Step 4 (mentioned in the article not as a step but in the conclusion) – look at God through God’s eyes! God is the only one worthy to be worshipped and have all of our focus.

  • Hi, Nice article, i loved it. ive got one question though: My mother has managed to finally get a job for which she has worked very hard for and when she told me that, i said to her that not only i am very happy for her but i also told her that i am proud of her. Have i sinned against the lord in this case?

  • Being humble doesn’t mean being inferior but self forgetfulness that leads to joy and other virtues that is god’s way Inferiority is still prideful. Humility benefits: -Peace -Education-Focused -Joy -Happiness -Hopefulness (Optimism) -Diligence -Purity -Generosity -Patience -Gentleness -Kindness -Trusting God -Doing good works -Confidence -Gratitude -Temperance and any other virtues

  • Hey question so the thing is i have this bible journal that im really happy about and im proud i got the idea and im proud im able to filll it with my studies about the Lord this is a thing i like to show my mother cuz i wanna show her im proud im able to do smth like this a get closer to God is that a sin?

  • there is so much i question about people. Like how can a person claim to be a follower and yet condone sins God detests (pride being the topic here)? Being proud is one thing but knocking down others and thinking one is better than others (due to their accomplishments) is another. People who have this makes it even harder on those who actually want to believe and follow God.
