A wedding ceremony is a sacred event where the bride and groom exchange vows of love, vows, and rings. The celebrant speaks to the couple, presenting them as husband and wife. The priest asks if anyone present knows of any reason why the couple should not marry. A preacher’s message during a wedding typically emphasizes the importance of love, trust, and mutual support.
A pastor can use their wisdom and experience to give reminders of how you want your life and marriage to be. They may use phrases like “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today in the sight of God to witness and celebrate the holy union of bride’s name and groom’s name.” The wedding ceremony must include two key elements: the Declaration of Intent (Do you take…”) and the Pronouncement (pronouncing the couple officially married).
The minister usually says something about the symbolism of the wedding ring, reminding the couple that love is not cheap or common but to be cherished. The preacher may share words of wisdom, offer prayers, and offer words of wisdom throughout the ceremony.
During the ceremony, the pastor typically recites traditional vows or personalized messages that the couple has written themselves. The meaning behind these words and tips for writing personalized vows and choosing the right pastor for your special day are explored.
In summary, a wedding ceremony is a sacred event where the couple exchanges vows, rings, and promises, with the priest and pastor providing guidance and blessings.

What does the officiant say after the vows?
After the wedding ring exchange. After the wedding rings are exchanged, the wedding ceremony ends with the pronouncement. The officiant will say, “I now pronounce you husband and wife.” If it’s a religious ceremony, it may end with, “In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, I now pronounce you husband and wife.”
Wearing your wedding rings. Your wedding ring symbolizes love and commitment, not just on your wedding day. On the contrary. Most couples choose to wear their rings throughout their lives. Some couples don’t wear rings. Sometimes you should take yours off.
What does the priest say at a wedding objection?
The history and meaning of “Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Piece.” Like many Western wedding traditions, the phrase “speak now or forever hold your peace” comes from Christianity and European custom. The complete wording comes from the marriage liturgy section of the Book of Common Prayer. The Book of Common Prayer was first published in 1549. It provides guidelines for religious services, customs, and worship in the Church of England. Today, this book is used by and referenced in churches in the Anglican Communion, which is the third-largest Christian church in the world. Phrases from the Book of Common Prayer have also been used in countries that were once part of the British Empire. The reason the phrase was included in liturgy likely had more to do with legal and practical concerns than God. “In the Middle Ages, it was hard to tell people someone was getting married,” says Magerman. “There were no computers or cell phones.” Most churches announced upcoming marriages three Sundays before the wedding. These proclamations, read aloud by a priest and published in the parish bulletin, were a formal announcement that a wedding was happening.

What to preach at a wedding ceremony?
Some people feel comfortable preaching an evangelistic sermon at a wedding, while others don’t. It depends on the wedding and the preacher. Even if you don’t like preaching about God’s love, the Bible readings at weddings are good for talking about God’s love for us and how we can all have a relationship with God. The Bible readings at weddings often talk about love. A sermon based on these readings can show how human love and God’s love are connected. It can also tell the congregation that God loves them and wants to be part of their lives. The wedding at Cana (John 2.1-11) is a good place to start. When a couple gets married in church, they ask God to be part of their marriage. The sermon can remind them that just as God invites us to come to him, we can invite God to be active in our lives. The wedding sermon shares the gospel with the couple and their guests. A wedding sermon is also a chance to explain what Christians believe about marriage. This can help the couple and their guests understand the ceremony. The wedding sermon might talk about becoming one. This is a theme in Genesis 2.18-25 and Mark 10.6-9. The sermon might also look at what it means for the couple to share their identities, not losing their individuality. Christian marriage is for life and involves giving. The sermon could focus on how marriage is different today (this can be seen in Ephesians 5:21-33). Christian marriage is about putting the other person first and making a lifelong commitment. It’s about more than just feeling good or being emotionally fulfilled. It should mention the importance of fidelity and keeping wedding vows. Connecting with the couple is often the most fun part of writing a wedding sermon. How this is done depends on the couple and the reading(s) chosen. Connect the themes of the reading to the ideas of Christian marriage and what the couple is doing as they get married. Another way is to connect the readings to the couple’s life. This could be how they will take this into their married life or how their married life will be shaped by it. It depends on the couple and what they want to share. A couple who chose the Song of Songs passage including the verse, “Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it,” had an accident where one of them accidentally knocked the other into a swimming pool. It could have led to a fight, but love didn’t end. It’s okay to add humor to a wedding sermon. This makes the story more personal for the couple and their guests. Another example is a couple who chose Ecclesiastes 4:9-12. They have had times in their life together when one helped the other or they depended on each other. Finally, a reading may have been chosen because it’s important to the bride or groom’s family. It might have been used at a previous wedding or was the favorite Bible reading of a recently deceased grandparent. If a reading is chosen for this reason, the congregation can be told and the reading’s history can be explored. Discuss the themes of the reading or readings with the couple before the wedding to find ways to connect them to their lives.

Hey Mark. I Just officiated my cousins wedding 2 weekends ago. In front of 200+ family members and friends. It was my very first time, and with the help of your articles and instruction It was a Complete Success! Thank you for sharing your gift with all of us. And If I ever get up to Canada, Lunch is on me! Your friend, Matthew Shealey from Columbia SC. All the Best & Keep up the good work!

Just wanted to send you a BIG thank you Mark!!! I officiated my first (and likely last!) wedding in October. It went very well, mainly because of all your great advice. I was pretty freaked out about the event and your articles really helped calm me down and give me the confidence I needed. God bless you my friend! Thanks again for being such a great resource!
Hello, I just wanted to write to you and say thank you. I had already put together a lot of my wedding ceremony as a one-day officiant when I discovered your articles, I had even written my own questionnaire to interview the wedding couple! Even though I didn’t need more specific help from you, I found your articles to be very informative, and quite encouraging for this novice. I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate that you put all of this information out here and how kind and supportive you are to basically a community of strangers. I performed the wedding on Sunday to rave reviews from the bride and groom and family and friends, we had a wonderful time, and it was the just right thing for my very dear friends whom I officially married on Sunday. At any rate, I just wanted to thank you for being out there and putting this out into the universe, it was helpful and lovely and I think you’re terrific! Have a great day!
I just want to say Thank you… you made my first time doing a wedding so easy and better than I thought I would do.. It was not perfectly done without out a hiccup but after perusal all your articles (many times) I learned that no one knows the hiccup but me so make the best of them and keep it fun and enjoying… I just made it part of the wedding. Telling everyone that this part is where I always stumble but rest assure we will make it through this little hiccup.. and we all laugh a little… bride and groom loved it and guests said they really enjoyed the up beat relaxed feel of this wedding and thanked me …. I got 3 more weddings from this one wedding and they want the same laid back fun style wedding…. so I just want to say Thank you
Absolutely perfect info for the wedding I am doing for my niece next month. I have several ideas for what I want to say but this helped me organize what I am planning into a fluid ceremony that will be so much better after perusal your article. Thank you for taking the time and being so straight forward and concise in your directions. Thank you!!!
Oh my goodness – I can not thank you enough for all your guidance!!! I officiated my niece’s wedding this past weekend and there is NO WAY it would have went as smoothly as it without your help here!!! It helped me from planning ahead of time, to meeting with the couple to plan the service, to the pep talk before the ceremony (which I’m a huge believer in now!!!), through the ceremony and right through the couple walking out married. So helpful – Thank you so much Mark!!! One suggestion for anyone else officiating for the first time – practice a few times a day or so before, out loud and live. Helps a lot!
I just officiated my first wedding over the weekend. It went great! I watched a ton of your articles for different pieces of advice and guidance. The wedding planner couldn’t believe it was my first wedding and the photographer couldn’t believe I wanted to actually discuss details with him. Oh! And the rehearsal was a huge help as well! The parents loved the ceremony… the couple loved it… And I just wanted to send you a quick thank you!
Thank You so much for this step-by-step overview of how to officiate a wedding. My wife’s cousin asked me to officiate her wedding, so I have completed all the required jurisdictional certifications and I have an idea as to how to proceed. This guide you have provided has helped me firm up my Officiant’s Plan! Thanks again!!!
Thank You! My son and soon to be daughter-in-law asked me to Officiate their wedding—now its two weeks off! \r Obviously, I could not refuse, but as our planning meeting approached, it all became real! I expected to get adequate planning tools from the internet Ministry/Officiant license provider–but not so much. I shook off the fear and dove right into YouTube. Thankfully I found all your tools! I’ve been pecking away at my script and plan to have a final meeting next Wednesday to make any necessary tweaks. I would be absolutely lost, up-the-creek, had I not found your articles! Incredible resource! You covered every nook and cranny! Thanks.
Hi Mark, I just viewed this article and a few others of yours and really enjoyed them. Very informative and effective. A question for you, how does someone become a wedding officiant? This service intrigues me tremendously right now. I have been a wedding MC for over 30 years and I feel as though I would greatly enjoy this. I also feel as though I would be very good at it. Appreciate your input on this. Thanks!
Awesome article, thank you! First time coming up soon, and this was a huge help. One quick question: if the couple if reading their own vows, do you feel having them do a declaration of intent (“I do”) is necessary? I didn’t see that separate from self-written vows in your steps so curious if you feel this is needed or not. Thanks a bunch!
Great article that gave me a lot of ideas. My husband and I are celebrating our 30th anniversary this year. We plan on renewing our vows in a small back yard ceremony at our home in Nova Scotia. We want to add a hand fasting ceremony instead of ring exchange (I am part Scottish). Our 2 adult daughters will be officiating this part only and other than that we weren’t planning on having another officiant with the rest of the ceremony. I was wondering have you done this before and do you have any tips or suggestions on how to do this smoothly? Thank you for your time.
Mark, truly enjoyed your articles. I’m in the process of considering to officiate at weddings. So, I’m gathering all kinds of information to make my decision. I have found a lot of the information from your articles. I’d like to listen to your blog…but didn’t see it at bottom. Also, how do you charge for weddings since each one can be so different. I did subscribe to you so hopefully I’ll get that decision made quickly so I can start. I love people and it’s such a wonderful time. 🙂
New subscriber here I like your style. Often when I address the guests at the beginning after reminding them to silence their cell phones I remind them to clap at the end. I’ve seen a few weddings where it’s quiet as a church mouse after I pronounce them and introduce them. It’s kind of awkward. Sometimes I will assign one person to remember to clap at the end and then usually everybody else will join in
Hey Mark, thanks for this informative article; I have a question though— after “signing of docs” you basically present the couple as “legit” and “music plays” and people “cheer” however after “presentation” you basically “present” the couple again, and “music plays” again, and people “cheer” again. I’m just slightly confused by this, and was wondering if you could offer clarity. Thanks for your time.
This is excellent, and I can’t thank you enough for this outline! I officiate my first wedding next weekend (Oct. 5th) and your article/instructions are giving me such peace of mind. One question for you… do you have notes for the ceremony or do you memorize everything? I’d love to have some notes (in case I get nervous and “blank out”), but not sure if that is tacky/unprofessional. It’s for friends and very casual, but I would still like to do a good job for them and have it be as professional as possible.
Hey thanks for this – this is very helpful! As I haven’t yet performed a ceremony, I was wondering about all the paperwork-y stuff. What is all the stuff I need to do before the actual wedding? Note that I am in California, so the process might be different – but what is all the stuff you have to do leading up to it?
Used your great tips at my first wedding and now have been invited to do another one( I am not legal, in both cases, they were already legally married) These tips are so great!! One question. At the last ceremony, I solicited the couple and family for their story but did not share it with them before the ceremony. It worked well and caused some great spontaneous laughs. Ok to do that again?
Hi Mark, how did you get ordained? I was ordained by ULC (Universal Life Church), they said my title is Minister… though on the marriage license they said I can go by minister or clergy, what’s the difference, and why not just call myself an Officiant? Last question, do I have to return the marriage license to the County Clerk or is this something the couple can do?
Is it weird to do both Custom Vows, Rings, and then the Declaration of Intent (I Do’s)? In New Jersey, they have to say “I Do”, but it doesn’t matter how the question is worded or when in the ceremony it is said. My couple want the I Do’s to be after the Vows and Rings, but I usually see it done before…
Loved this article, I’ve been married almost 29 years, my wife told me this past feb. she wanted a divorce, we have 16 yr old twins,. This is tough, I’ve prayed, my children have prayed, I’ve been reading the Bible every night trying to find answers, I’m heartbroken & this whole ordeal is taking its tole on me. I know Gods will is not for us to get a divorce, please pray for me & my family, please….
Please pray for my ex, we spent 6 years together but had to split because we are not married, he was my everything but does not want to accept Jesus and doesn’t understand how important this is ..he wants us to continue but I’m trying to be close to God and pray for forgiveness for spending 6 years with a man I was not married with please pray for him to understand that at least there is a god up there in the sky, I tried to explain him a lot of times but doesn’t take it seriously… please pray for him and me, pray for me to keep strong I want to repent and give my life to Jesus and I want to get baptized but I’m a sinner my thoughts are still not right but please pray for me and him, and I will pray for you too ..
It’s been 40 years of waiting. I admit it can be a struggle at times. So I come to Abba God in humbleness and repentance and start all over again. What God has joined let no one seperate. Matthew 19:6 As difficult as it can be; I know I can do all things through Christ Jesus that strengthens me. Philippians 4:13. Amen! Thank you Jesus 🕊❤
Daddy God,I m surrendering my life at your feet.U have seen my singleness and I believe at the suitable time you are going to bring that person into my life…I believe me and my family (together) will serve you. I trust you,Lord n Ur timing… Journey is long way but God I believe you are with me and guiding me..
Been married x2 outside of Christ. Both marriages came to and end. Now I can look back and know I was looking for a fairytale love because I never received this as a child growing up. Now that I’m born again and Christ is the centre of my life. Most wonderful gift from God above to live in his righteousness and be free from all condemnation.
Hello guys, I come here in need of prayers. My wedding is in 2 weeks but I want my wedding be filled with Gods blessings. So I told my family that I wanted to go natural no makeup or wigs, and not too much dancing because there’s something you can do that not good or something that will lead you to sin,so I don’t really care about dancing and showing off, or spending so much money, since all I need is Gods blessings and my partner feels the same. But my sisters and sister in law are telling me that my wedding will be boring, but I know by the grace of God there will be only peace, joy and happiness.Pray for me so I cannot fall into temptation.God bless.❤❤
The thing that brought my family to Christ was my want and desire to have a happier marriage. I found biblical marriage and then it let me to Christ. Then…my husband and children followed, too. We had biblical marriage counseling for 9 weeks…and it changed our lives. Our whole family is so much better now. 💓 Thank you, Jesus.

Man, before you get married, identify first what form of a puzzle that you have been lacking in your life. Then, find a woman that fits for you. A woman who can give you a purpose, meaning, and can make you a whole person. Then provide your woman a full honor, respect, love and value so that she will stay nurturing your marriage until the end of your time. It’s difficult to find a needle at the dessert so you must be wise of choosing what is right for you. Its also difficult to fill in a gap which form is broken, so be sure to see yourself if you are worthy to build a family. Marriage is not a game that when you loss, you will play with another team again and again. God only give you a gift once that is everlasting. so Ask Him, Pray for it.
I am sinner I was with a man the father of children for 17 years since we were teens I love him so much never was married legally we went through physical emotional abuse addictions with Drugs alcohol and among other things I always had a job to be able to maintain my daughters and family I asked him so many times crying my heart out to him I prayed cried out to our Father in Heaven for us to change our ways he heard my tears my daughters father tried but would go back to it and he would pull me back in I was so scared I don’t think he understood that until I prayed and said no more of this life my daughters and I seen a lot of things I got us out of their with the Grace of God and families help now I separated from him and even though I still love him and I still see him and I want to be with him and struggle with my walk with God pls pray for me and my family Heavenly Father forgive me for all sins you are my strength my motivation my savior my everything with out you I would not do it you are my one and only in Jesus name I pray Amen
One man and one woman for life – that’s the only definition God created for marriage as exemplified in Adam and Eve. Any other union claiming to be a marriage is a counterfeit of Satan. “This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.” Genesis 2:24
Jesus I beg you for guidance in my marriage…I dont always do things the right way…but i refuse to give up or quit trying..I feel you blessed this relationship but something always try’s to jump into it and destroy us….please jesus help me love her like I was meant too made too…let me love and heal us…be the concrete that keeps us together and the foundation that keeps us grounded…in jesus mighty name I pray

Me and my boyfriend have been together almost four years and he still doesn’t want to get married. We’re both Christians and I just don’t understand why he doesn’t want to. I cry about this every night. Desperately seeking comfort. Idk what to do. I love him. I don’t want to wake up in hell because of this or him
That is it right there! Ignore the sickness of this world, and educate people in a healthy way on God’s creation. Life in a romantic relationship is created between a man and woman. The creation of a man and a woman and that combination is an absolute gift from God -> there is no other contrivance of a romantic connection.
I am 22.If it’s God’s will, I will get married after 4-5 years. Please do pray for me. I am messy girl. Highly sensitive. I don’t know whether any man can handle me. Pray for me Christian family. I’m soon to be a soldier and have plans to take a woman’s hand in marriage and build a future with many kids. I want to bring my relationship and marriage to God first and teach my children about God and His unfailing love. I felt it necessary to post this here because I am uncertain of the outcome so far. All I know is the the Lord has plans for me and I am called according to His purpose over my life. Pray that the relationship I seek and the future I intend to build is sanctified through Christ. And please pray for my safety on the frontline. Family is one of the main reasons I intend to return home alive and delivered back to my wife to be. Also any verses that you recommend I should look up please post them in the reply section. Thank you and I love each and every one of you.
please pray for me and my husband we’ve been having problems for a while couldn’t get it right didn’t communicate with one another until we can no longer speak without an argument it’s got so bad my husband has started talking to another person online half way across the world he doesn’t want to be with me anymore and refuses to give us a chance with marriage counselling even though we haven’t been getting on I’m devastated and really want to work it out but he doesn’t want to so what do i do now??
I am blessed to have such a strong loving marriage but everyday I pray that my husband comes to know Christ and love God, he says he believes but he doesnt understand. I pray that our life together be a testimony for the love of God, that our children witness what the holy spirit can do and that all is made for the Glory of God. Our life together, Our family, Our journey together. Both from broken homes, that God creates between us a new legacy and lineage anointed by him that my children and their children and so on grow to be faithful in the lord and experience the Love of God and have eyes that see God working throughout our Lives. Lord please remove his heart of stone and make it a heart of flesh so that he may lead our family spiritually, use me as an instrument to bring Glory to you that all life that comes from our union may be God fearing people who chase after the heart of Christ, that they wont be timid or lukewarm but rather they understand you and that only through you will we find our happiness, purpose and blessings. I pray that the marriages here in this thread are healed and reconciled and that as Christ forgave us that we are able to meet our spouses and extend that Grace, that whatever hurt has been caused is healed through The love of Christ Jesus who is the only way to know peace, and who is the healer of our hearts. I ask that you mend what is broken and forge together the hearts of these coupled through the holy spirit, for it is only through you Grace that we are able to continue on.
How can I love a Lady when I’m single? I’m past 50 years old & single. Why can’t I be with GOD & a Lady at the same time? Was I made to be without a Lady before I was born? If that’s the case, Why was I allowed to be born? I asked those questions to GOD countless times & all I heard was silence. I guess that I’ll die single 😢 ! That’s unfair ! 😞!

I ask for urgent prayers for my marriage as the forces of darkness are very busy trying to make my wife leave me after 24 years of marriage. Please brothers and sisters, I ask you to pray for us. Heavenly Father, I give you all praise and adoration, because your word is ever true. I give you thanks because no weapon that is formed against this marriage will stand (Isaiah 54:17). I declare that every arrow shot to destabilize this marriage is broken to pieces, in Jesus name. With the spiritual authority given to me through Christ Jesus, I command the fire of God to consume every wedge that is meant to be put between me and my spouse, through bad and ungodly advice and false teachings. Every evil hand of demonic manipulation is crushed, in Jesus name. I retrieve my marriage from the jaws of the evil one, in Jesus’ name. Thank you, Abba Father, because IT IS DONE, in Jesus’ name.
