What Dress Would You Wear To A Wedding?

This wedding guest fashion guide provides expert tips on choosing what to wear and what not to wear for various dress codes and seasons. Daytime weddings are more casual, so lighter fabrics, festive colors, and less-formal attire are the rule. For women, a nice daytime dress, skirt, top, or jumpsuit is good choices, while for men, a well-tailored suit in a rich, warm color is acceptable.

The choice between heels or flats is a matter of personal preference and comfort. For a formal look, heels are a great option, but for comfort, flats can be used. Accessories can be a variety of options, including comfortable shoes, cute purses, and earrings.

For a May wedding, opt for a pretty floral dress, pastel maxi dress, or lace cocktail dresses for a daytime wedding, or a beautiful bright color gown or pastel for formal May weddings. Avoid wearing white, jeans, T-shirts, flip-flops, or anything too casual. In the spring and summer, stick to lightweight fabrics, such as navy, cream, or white linens for casual attire.

For a wedding reception, dress respectfully by avoiding anything too casual or too bridal. Consider wearing a lightweight sundress or midi dress with strappy heels or sandals, or a button-down shirt or short sleeve polo tucked into the wedding ceremony.

For summer weddings, consider full-length dresses, high heels, and a black tie. For a black tie wedding, formal attire includes floor-length gowns, tuxedos, and black suits.

  • I know this article was 10mths ago but here where I am (South Australia) we’ve just come out of festival season called the Fringe Festival – a month long time of art, circus, comedy, music, food….everything. I never know what to wear as shows & exhibitions can be indoors or outdoors. It’s summer for us but it can either be stifling hot or torrentially wet which makes dressing for it quite tricky so “dressing for festivals” (as a 50+ yr old would be great 😊

  • I’m so envious of the kind of wedding you go to! All of the outfits you developed here would have outshone everyone including the bride by several orders of magnitude. I loved them to bits of course! Especially the fascinator roses for the peacock outfit. In my neck of the woods wearing something like that automatically puts me firmly in the ‘weird, possibly quite mad’ category, but I sometimes did it anyway. Such fun!

  • Every outfit was jaw-dropping gorgeous, and released my surpressed inner glam spirit. Fashion in the US northeast (Maine) is no glam 100 percent of the time: “casual” is a religion here. I’ve been to weddings where men were wearing plaid shirts and jeans. Wearing anything slightly fashion invites disdain and ostracism. Your article was such an uplifting escape. The oatmeal suit was outstanding, even though I usually prefer dresses. Every outfit was so perfectly balanced except for the one with the yellow shoes, which overpowered the soft dress. Loved the idea using a thin gold belt as a headband. Thank you and your staff for a soul refreshing escape.

  • Trinny and the gang, please do a casual wear episode!! I have a partial disability and so need comfy clothes. I have watched you for years Trinny as we have similar colouring (neutral) and I am also tall and long waisted. I spent months trying to work out my ‘season’ but ended up so confused bcos I’m actually neutral and can wear a lot of colours from all the seasons as long as they are not too cool or too warm. Anyway, just a thought about casual wear. I like to look classy but comfy bcos it boosts self confidence and is a great distraction from being disabled ☺️

  • Great closet confessions and perfect timing Trinny & Co.!❤ Could you also do “jackets for wedding dresses/occaison wear”, as in which jackets match well with certain types of dresses, without looking too granny or businessy. That’s my old time nemesis and I would be very grateful if you could tackle that one for us!😘

  • Ooh my Trinny, how can you handle yourself!? Your look more beautiful in this article and the outfits are impecable on you and very inspiring for ideas. The closet is wow. The light green dress that your wore in Italy and the orange gihngahm one Woow always on my 5 top outfits of you. And the young lady wearing your clothes looks beautiful. Absolutely yes for white dresses and second part for weddings ideas inspo.

  • Hello, I got a wedding coming up at the end of October, it is going to be in the Yorkshire countryside, I would love some tips on what to wear…maybe a coat-dress? A coat over a silk dress? What kind of colours? I am a brunette with very pale complexion…maybe a dark pink? Any suggestion would be very welcome. Thank you, Cxxx

  • Love the gold dress, but I think the pearl headband clashes with it and then when the large earrings (which I love by the way) are added, it becomes way, way too much…almost garish. Of course this may be because I live in the US and we don’t really wear hats or headbands for dressy occasions, like you do in the UK. For instance, no one wears fascinators. (I think that is what you call some of your hats.) Nor do we wear pantyhose. (Tights in the winter yes, but not pantyhose.nylons.) Love the other outfits, but clearly that first headband should be burned. I used to have a headband that look like that, because I love the concept, but I could never come up with an outfit it looked great with, so I finally dumped it because it just doesn’t work.
