Maybe it sounds bad, but I don’t really care that McCain did this. We can make up stories about what was going through his mind or what his intent was, but we don’t actually know. I am sure McCain changed a lot too while a POW, not just his wife. McCain was an opportunist and a miserable POS! As far as being a war hero? A war veteran or a POW is not necessarily a hero. He is merely a war veteran who was a POW, which usually carries an honor all it’s own solely because people assume the POW was living in inhumane conditions and even tortured. That was not the case at all with McCain, according to numerous POW’s who were with him at the time… A hero is someone who goes above and beyond the call of duty to help another with no regard to his own safety (like throwing himself on a grenade or putting himself unnecessarily in harm’s way). That certainly DOES NOT describe McCain in any sense of the word. The military trains men and women to be soldiers, but they do not train them to become heroes. McCain spent his life trying to make the world believe he was a hero, but that was only in his own mind. While his fellow sailors were fighting the fire, McCain went to the pilot’s lounge below decks and watched the men fight the fire on closed circuit TV. Hours later, McCain took off with a New York Times reporter buddy of his, and went on to say that after seeing the effects of those bombs on the Forrestal, he was beginning to question the morality of dropping those bombs on the Viet Cong. McCain was the direct cause of 133 deaths on his own ship, and was never reprimanded.

It’s a bit too simple to say that McCain or other POWs married for money afterwards. Many of them ended up divorcing their wives afterwards… with no financial gain for either party. While I don’t support the unfaithfulness, I will say these couples went through horrid situations for years on end, and each became accustomed to living without each other.
