Marriage does not require a new passport with your spouse’s surname, and you can continue using your passport with your maiden name as ID until it expires. Most marriage certificates do not show married names, but they will show a current name, maiden name, or birth name. This is because most states do not offer spots to specify a new name after marriage. However, changing your name is still possible, as long as your spouse is listed and only changes your last name to your spouses or adds your spouse’s last name to yours.
A marriage certificate is sufficient evidence that you have changed your surname to that of your husband (as his appears on the certificate). All applications to change names must be supported by documentary evidence that resembles the acquired name and shows the linkage to the previous. Use certified copies of marriage and divorce certificates or name change orders as proof to notify federal and state agencies that you changed your name.
When you marry, you are free to keep your own name or take your husband’s name without a court-ordered name change. In most states, your spouse can adopt your name if that’s what you both prefer. However, in general, you will need a court order if you and your spouse want to change your name.
Your marriage certificate is a record of your marriage, not your new name or title. After your marriage, it is your own personal choice what you want to change your name.
