I’d love to see a transformation scene like this span out throughout a movie. At the beginning she had bad posture, unkept hair, bad dry skin, calloused hands and feet and throughout the film you see her posture being fixed which assists with her confidence issues, you see her learn how to treat and take care of whatever her hair type may be which makes her hair healthier and gorgeous, you see a proper skin routine which makes her face and body look healthy and rich, and take care of her hands and feet and whatnot. So you don’t just through development into a thirty minute segment.
I was a little girl when I first saw this movie, and I had hair just like hers and I knew even then from experience that no amount of straightening would ever keep it that straight without constant flat ironing or resorting to relaxing it. When she goes to school with the hat on the next day, and she still has perfectly straight hair hidden underneath, is when the movie magic officially stopped because I knew that just wasn’t possible unless she had a stylist constantly following her around with a pair of GHDs. The heat and the friction would have turned her hair, straight or not, into a frizz ball.
As much as I love this movie, it was reinforcing the stereotype that girls with curly hair and glasses are ugly and you have to get contacts and straighten your hair to be beautiful. As a dark skin black girl who wears glasses and has naturally curly afro hair, this definitely had a negative effect on me. I like flat ironing my hair sometimes but my natural hair is just as beautiful.
So, is there any movie with a makeover scene where, instead of insisting on contacts or laser eye surgery, they actually say, “Here, these will frame your face much more nicely” and then give her some super cute glasses or something? Because even though I don’t often care for movies with makeover scenes, I’d totally be willing to watch that.
This scene used to break my mom’s heart. I didn’t understand until years later because she and I have curly hair. She made it a point to tell me early on that makeup was for special occasions and that I totally didn’t need it. I only wear makeup for special occasions now. I am extremely thankful to her.

When I watched this as a little girl I loved it. Now as an adult, it strikes me as mean. Times have really changed! Also, Frida Kahlo, with her big unibrow and slight mustache, was considered very beautiful in her own time and had a passionate open relationship with her husband, as well as many male and female lovers in her lifetime.
I realized in this scene that they’re implying that curly hair is ugly when really it’s just been brushed dry… I know it’s an older movie that implies only straight hair is beautiful in early 2000s era, but honestly curly hair can be gorgeous, you just need to give the hair moisture and care. Shampoo in shower, put in deep conditioner then brush for detangling (I use tangle teeser brush), put in a hair towel. Spray bottle of water, some leave in conditioner like coconut oil, and brush hair using wide comb or comb through with hands with leave in conditioner, use hands to gently scrunch the curls and there you have it, beautiful defined curls 💖 I like to let it air dry and then have defined curls the rest of the day. I am grateful my mother who has curls taught me how to care for my curls. I always loved curly hair growing up. I would have loved to see a curly haired princess or Queen in movies for positive representation. 😊 Again I repeat, curly hair is beautiful 💖
The hair brush scene reminds me of how all hair dressers always freaked out when they saw my hair. They were always excited to see the thick long strong hair. And when it’s raining I look exactly like her in the beginning and it takes hours to dry my hair 😂 it’s not always as fun as people think it is
At the timeline 1:53 Paolo is mean and a bully to Mia. He broke her glasses. What a bully he is. I can’t believe Disney would show this problematic scene even on Disney Plus. I didn’t like paparazzi ambush shaming scene. I did enjoy most of the story in the movie even though it’s now outdated. There needs to be a Princess Diaries TV show or movie woke remake, since this original 2001 movie is problematic and outdated. I hope Disney Plus issues a label warning for Princess Diaries because I find this scene with the broken glasses very painful to watch since I wear eyeglasses. No one should be forced to wear contact lenses which I’m very against, I do not like contact lenses. I’m embarrassed that the Disney company would feature this problematic makeover scene in a G rated film.
When the brush broke in Mia’s hair, reminded me of when I was 16. I had very long, very thick hair. I was brushing it and felt no tension all of a sudden. The brush handle broke off. My mom took me to a local hair salon. The owner proceeded to give me a pixie hair cut. To say I was demoralized is an understatement.
I find all these comments about “Not taking this too seriously!!!11 It’s just a movie!111” to be a bit hypocritical, to be frank. First of all, yes, it can totally happen that young girls that identify themselves with Mia might feel bad about her makeover, as if they are being told “you need to change everything about you in order to be accepted!”. I know because it happened to me, back when it first came out. Second of all, the reason that “children don’t care!!” doesn’t hold water: if anything, children are MORE LIKELY to take movies seriously and believe them, since they have no context and no tools to analyze them from a critical point of view. They will not believe that they are secretly royals, of course, but they might believe that straight hair is better than frizzy hair, and this belief may stick with them long after they forgot where it came from, or how it was reinforced. It’s not because they are stupid, it’s simply how culture works. Third, this movie was intended to give young girls a role model: it’s a Disney Princess movie, after all (so much that the book it was based on is totally different). Disney princesses are specifically crafted with that purpose. We can’t pretend that Disney Princess merchandise doesn’t exist and that Princesses are not designed the way they are. Lastly, if the makeover is not that important, why putting it in the first place? And why does it stick, even when it makes no sense (like when she is all wet at the end)? Also I would like to point out that yes, they do call her ugly, why else would the Hairdresser scream when she sees her, passively-aggressively insults her throughout the sequence, and brags about the hard work that he’s done?
