What Is Marriage Equality In Australia?

Australia has become the 26th country to achieve marriage equality, joining over two dozen countries in legislating for it. The Australian Human Rights Commission believes that the fundamental human rights principle of equality means that civil marriage should be available. The Australian Parliament passed a bill almost unanimously to allow two people, regardless of sex, to marry. The Australian Marriage Equality (AME) advocacy group partnered with various organizations and supporters to end the exclusion of same-sex LGBTIQ couples from marriage in Australia.

Marriage equality has made it harder to demonise gay and lesbian people, as trans and gender diverse people are a smaller and less understood minority. If marriage equality legislation is adopted in parliament before the end of 2017, Australia will become the 25th country with marriage equality. Similar legislation is also being prepared in other countries.

In the three years since same-sex marriage was legalized, more than 14,000 couples have taken the plunge. However, for some, the struggle for full recognition continues. The Australian Parliament amended the Marriage Act three weeks later, redefining marriage as a union of two people. The Equality Campaign is a broad coalition of Australians working to make sure LGBTI people are equal under the law.

Can there be equality in marriage?

Equal partnerships benefit marriages and husbands and wives.

Happier marriages. Equal partnership makes husbands and wives closer, which makes marriages stronger and happier. Spouses feel better about each other, which makes them more likely to share their thoughts and feelings. This emotional intimacy leads to physical intimacy, which is important for a happy marriage. Equal partnerships also result in more stable marriages, less conflict, less dependency, and less resentment. Researcher John Gottman found that husbands who accept their wives are four times less likely to divorce or have an unhappy marriage.

Benefits to men. Men benefit from equal partnership because they feel more open about their marriage. They also benefit from the physical intimacy that comes with equal partnership. Physical intimacy is good for your health and reduces stress. Men in happy marriages are more productive at work because they are less distracted.

Benefits to women. Equal partnerships benefit women by improving communication and emotional intimacy. Wives are happier when they have an equal say in decision-making. Wives are happier when their husbands appreciate them and help with housework. They feel better about themselves, are less angry or depressed, feel their relationship is fairer, and are happier with their marriage.

What is Australia’s view on marriage?

About a quarter of people who took part in the Australia Talks National Survey 2021 think marriage is outdated. More women than men feel this way. Liana Tran decided in her early 20s not to have children or get married.

The survey also found that women, particularly younger women, are more likely to think marriage is outdated. Australian women are having fewer children and having them later in life. Why is marriage important in Australia?

Spouses are automatically next of kin, which means a spouse can make medical decisions in an emergency, inherit insurance and benefits, benefit from an estate, and make special tax and government support arrangements.

Marriage also cancels any last will and testament, unless the will was made before the marriage. This is because the law assumes your spouse comes before other family and dependents. These assumptions don’t apply to other relationships. How does a marriage end? A marriage can end through death, annulment, or divorce.

It was the first marriage equality bill debated in another chamber. It was introduced in the House of Representatives on December 4, 2017. The bill passed the third reading stage in the House on December 7, 2017, and received Royal Assent the next day. Since 2004, 23 bills about marriage equality or overseas same-sex marriages have been introduced into the federal Parliament. Four bills have been voted on before. Three were in the Senate (in 2010, 2012, and 2013) and one was in the House of Representatives (in 2012). All of these bills were defeated at the second reading. Twenty-three bills were introduced or co-sponsored by members of parliament representing various parties.

  • I have a friend who died in car accident years ago. He had a boyfriend and they had been living together for 10 years plus just like a family. When he died, his boyfriend could not claim his body and visit funeral (because the family did not allow it). If his boyfriend was a legalized husband, he could do so as his legalized spouse. This is just one of the example why it is important and desperate gay community want marriage equality. This is not just for fun.

  • 1- another couple being gay/lesbian does not affect you in anyway. it does not mean you have to be gay too. 2- don’t use your religion as an excuse because not everyone believes your God and saying that two people cant be in love because your religion says so is like getting mad at someone for eating a donut cause you’re on a diet. 3-if Australia really is a ‘free country’ then people should be able to marry same sex. 4- its THEIR life NOT yours 5- how would you feel if you weren’t allowed to get married to the person you love? 6-since when was someone else’s relationship your decision?? 7-there are people murdering, raping, killing, stealing, kidnapping etc and we are arguing about whether someone should be able to love who they want or not?? GET A GRIP PEOPLE, LOVE IS LOVE.

  • To this day, I rewatch this beautiful piece of artful protest whenever I need a bittersweet smile (the most honest smile, I’ve always thought). Thank you, Australia, for such a masterful, subtle, poignant illustration of how wonderful it can be to seek the “right side of history”, and how juvenile and puerile our ignorance of the rising tide truly is.

  • Reminds me a lot when my husband proposed to me 7 years ago. We have done all the same. Roller-coaster. Swimming in the ocean. Sitting beside mother-in-law’s bed when she passed away. Except for never played cricket on the beach. And we are using a GPS in the car. We are a very normal and very boring gay couple who still love each other after 12 years together. I hop that one day, everyone could have the same possibility to love the one they love, as long as we have been doing.

  • It’s not even ‘end marriage discrimination’. It’s ‘live your life and let others live theirs’. If you let others be free with their ideas, then they will let you live free with yours. If you oppress different ideas, then your ideas will be oppressed by someone too. Whatever you put out is what you get back. Either choose the world of oppression and conflict, or a world of love and freedom. It’s your choice.

  • This is honestly one of the best support articles I have ever seen. It truly captures the most intimate and amazing moments in a relationship, alongside some of the bad. It shows what really matters in a relationship, not whether it’s a man or a woman behind the camera, but seeing that they stick with this guy through the thick and thin. We almost get to know these characters, their interests, and maybe a few of their quirks. And we learn how deep their love is. This is such a beautiful article, I’m so glad I found it. And high compliments to those who developed it!!

  • I remember when this came out (lol puns). perusal it again now, I still get chills. The whole thing is really beautifully done. In 2017, a survey was sent out to all Australians by the government asking if they supported marriage equality. 80% of Australians participated. 62% said yes. (For direct democracy, that’s HUGE.) There’s a touching article of Penny Wong in tears . Way to go, Australia. This is how it’s done. It’s also a lesson for other movements about how to reach people. You can’t guilt them or shame them, you have to make them sympathize with you.

  • My cousin Luke in NY, posted this on his feed, and I was in bumper to bumper traffic and it brought me to tears, realizing that I do have family that says its ok to be gay. I don’t know if he knows that I am gay but his timing is totally weird, with being the start of the holidays. Brings validation and hope that we are making progress that barriers are being moved. Thanks for sharing and keep spreading hope love and understanding.

  • I guess this would be my first comment ever on youtube after having my account for almost 10 years… i cant believe i just came to notice this add after 7-8 years? More or so… i also think this comment will be submerged in between the 30k other comments good and bad… but let me tell something to the team that came up with this idea, script and article realization that they nailed it… got me to tears and got me thinking… i live in a country that’s way too far from even accepting LGBT persons as they are… persons. Don’t even imagine i would see in my lifespan marriage equality nor even civil union, or rights… but this article made me think that there is still hope… thank you…

  • To all the people saying its against god, its not about religion, its civil rights, just as slave owners fought for slavery because the bible said it was okay, this too will end up with the rights of all comming before the religion of some. Just like how we look back and shake our heads at the people who fought for slavery we will look back and shake our heads at religious bigots who think their beliefs come before another persons happiness. Its already happening, more people want it far stronger than you don’t want it and in the end happiness and love will prevail! Be on the right side! Your not going to win! -Ally

  • Just know that there will always be people just like the two guys in this article clip. Pay no attention to those that don’t understand.. they probably have had an electrician fix their power, plumber unblock their pipes, doctors stitch them up, counselor help them thru a tough stage in their life, a taxi driver drive them home after having too much to drink, a favourite sports personality that has represented their country, a financial planner who has helped create wealth to build a better future for their families or even a builder who has help build the roof over their head…. Who is Gay. Think before you speak… Everyday, humans help humans, straight, gay, bi and transgender!! Don’t be judgemental.. everyone deserves to live a full and happy life! #againstdiscrimination

  • This is wonderful! As a straight person I will say that being open-minded and very emotional to things with depth and meaning, this sent tears down my face each time I watched the article! So much so that I didn’t respond until I came up with a meaningful reply. I understand what it is like to be different and not a “march-in-the-line” soldier; you are socially side-lined, made to walk your own distance, deprived of the very privileges that your everyday person takes for granted. It is time to stop simple-minded thinking, to stop one’s own discrimination and hate of the “other” and for all to really understand one another and get along in intellectual empathy. This is indeed the 21st century; we have technology, the raised intellect, the higher understanding to see that we are all in fact the most advanced living beings on our planet and to learn how to appreciate, accept and take-on new ideas rather than staying back in time, unevolved and primitive. Thank you Australia, my home country, for moving ahead with this wonderful exhibition of forwardness and tolerance 🙂

  • People need to quit fighting this. Gay marriage will happen eventually because it’s right and just. If you don’t think so then your no American. I’m not saying you have to like it or anything, but denying someone else’s rights because you don’t agree with them??? What America is that? Oh, the modern one filled with hateful people.

  • I absolutely adore my partner and would love the opportunity to marry her. I do not feel that marriage makes a relationship necessarily more serious or valid. However, everyone should have the right regardless of their sexual preference to choose if they want to enter into a marriage or not. Please, lets push this through. It’s long overdue!

  • I went to a pride parade today. It always makes me so happy to see other people be able to be who they are. I don’t see how being homosexual effects anyone in a negative way? I rather see it positive, we need diversity to be a society. People need to stop hating and loving instead 🙂 ! Have a great day people and spread this article!!

  • BREAKING NEWS – Same sex marriages will begin in the state of Illinois TOMORROW, Saturday 2/22/2014. The state decided in favor of same sex marriage at the end of 2013 and the marriages were scheduled to begin in June, since Illinois often has a six month delay between enacting a measure and implementing the change, but today the court ruled that there is no reason to require these couples to wait any longer, as doing so would simply delay justice and would serve no beneficial purpose.

  • This article actually gives me hope that one day the world will just see that it is okay to love another person regardless of whether the person is of the same sex or opposite sex. With the help of this article, we take small steps and transition into a more accepting and loving world. Love the article and its message!

  • BREAKING NEWS – STATE NUMBER EIGHTEEN – The state of Utah has just ruled that their state amendment denying same sex couples access to civil marriage is UNCONSTITUTIONAL and same sex couples are now legally marrying in Utah, effective immediately. An excerpt from the conclusion of the court ruling: The State of Utah has provided no evidence that opposite-sex marriage will be affected in any way by same-sex marriage. In the absence of such evidence, the State’s unsupported fears and speculations are insufficient to justify the State’s refusal to dignify the family relationships of its gay and lesbian citizens. Moreover, the Constitution protects the Plaintiffs’ fundamental rights, which include the right to marry and the right to have that marriage recognized by their government.

  • BREAKING NEWS – a federal judge in SOUTH CAROLINA has just ruled that the state’s ban on civil marriage for same sex couples is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. South Carolina is one of the states in the Fourth Federal Appeals Circuit, and the Fourth Circuit had recently ruled such bans unconstitutional in a case which originated in Virginia, which is also in the Fourth Circuit. These Federal Circuit court rulings affect ALL states within that circuit, meaning it directs South Carolina to stop enforcing their marriage ban along with the other states in the Fourth Circuit. But South Carolina has been seeking a way to disregard that federal ruling and continue banning same sex marriage in their state. This new ruling confirms that they are required to comply with the first federal appeals ruling and confirms that they must cease infringing on the rights of same sex couples who wish to legally marry.

  • BREAKING NEWS in the state of KANSAS. The state of Kansas is in the 10th federal appeals circuit, and is bound by the recent 10th Circuit ruling in Utah’s “Kitchen v. Herbert” case, which found that laws denying civil marriage to same sex couples are unconstitutional. Since then, the state of Kansas has been trying to avoid complying with that federal mandate, but as of today their attempts have just now been DENIED by a federal district judge. Legal civil marriages for same sex couples are expected to begin in Kansas in ONE WEEK, on November 11th.

  • Love is Love. It’s that simple. It shouldn’t be a surprise if a boy likes other boys or a girl likes other girls, is bisexual, etc. It’s 2018! We’ve learned that no matter the culture or religion, everyone isn’t cookie-cutter. It may not be natural in most people’s eyes…nor is your car, your ear piercing, your food, your house, your medicine, your surgery, etc. This is beautiful. 🙂

  • I don’t understand the people that are sooo against homosexuality and gay rights, how in the hell does it effect your life if two men/women get married? Please tell me HOW? It doesn’t make you or your children gay, it’s not something contagious, you know? It’s also not a choice, no one in their right mind would choose to be gay, it’s not like colouring your hair. Don’t you think that every gay person once wished to be straight, until they accepted themselves for who they are and became happy.

  • A country’s government determines the law. Marriage is not owned by religions. All citizens should be entitled to the same rights. To the thousands of lgbt+ people in Australia who contribute to society, pay their taxes and uphold the laws, and yet are denied the right of equal marriage, I am sorry. I was lucky enough in the UK to marry, and frankly I’m astonished that Australia still doesn’t have equal marriage. The hate speech going on in the comments section absolutely astounds me. So much hate. Since my partner and I have been married, society hasn’t crumbled (unless you count Brexit, but we won’t get into that now😉), and our marriage hasn’t stopped marriages between straight couples meaning any less. Yep, all we won’t is our right to equality. Good luck Australia! ❤️

  • Speaking of wonders; reminds me of a ‘riddle’ I was told years ago, when I was fairly young. I consider myself a feminist but the riddle showed how (at least at that young age) I was, in some way sexist. A man is out for the day with his son, when the sun gets hit by a car. The father calls an ambulance and goes with them as they rush him to the hospital. When they arrive the doctor walks in and says “Oh my God, My son.” Who was the doctor? Now to give myself props I suggested things like his adopted/step father or he has two fathers and they’re a gay couple, which showed I was fairly accepting even then. But even when told I was being sexist I never considered that the doctor could be the mother.

  • I thought this was just lovely. A lot of the things they did and shared together reminded me of my relationship with my husband, and I smiled even wider because I was then thinking about the person I love. I had a hard time with the comments after that, so much vitriol from BOTH sides. I just saw a couple in love, a couple that would soon hold a ceremony and promise to love each other forever. I don’t think that they have any less right to love and marry each other than I do with my husband.

  • BREAKING NEWS – After the 4th Circuit declined to stay its ruling for South Carolina yesterday, the state took the same question to the U.S. Supreme Court – which has also just rejected their request for a stay. There is now no legal recourse for the state of South Carolina to continue denying marriage certificates to same sex couples without violating an order from the federal courts. Same sex couples can now legally marry in South Carolina as of noon today EST.

  • BREAKING NEWS – Today, a federal court ruled that the laws denying civil marriage to same sex couples in the state of ALASKA are UNCONSTITUTIONAL. From the ruling: CONCLUSION Any state interests identified by Defendants are insufficient for Alaska’s same-sex marriage laws to pass constitutional muster under due process or equal protection. Plaintiffs’ Motion for Summary Judgment at Docket 20 is GRANTED. With this ruling, the Court hereby DECLARES that Alaska’s same-sex marriage laws are unconstitutional for violating the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

  • BREAKING NEWS – The U.S. Supreme Court has just decided that all of the pending Marriage Equality cases that have ruled in favor of marriage equality and have been appealed to the highest court will be allowed to STAND, and the Supreme Court will not consider re-trying these cases. This has just brought marriage equality to ALL FIVE of the states involved in the pending circuit trials (VIRGINIA, UTAH, INDIANA, OKLAHOMA, and WISCONSIN) and all of the other states within those same circuits (NORTH CAROLINA, SOUTH CAROLINA, COLORADO, WEST VIRGINIA, KANSAS and WYOMING). That’s a total of ELEVEN STATES that have just gained equal civil marriage rights for same sex couples.

  • Some U.S. news: A few hours ago, same sex couples began legally marrying in the state of Hawaii. This makes Hawaii the fifteenth state that allows civil marriage for same sex couples. Illinois has already decided to allow this as well, and same sex couples will begin legally marrying in that state in a few months, making Illinois the sixteenth state (plus Washington D.C., which already allows same sex marriage, bringing the total number of U.S. jurisdictions to seventeen). Several more states have legislation or court decisions pending that will also allow same sex couples to legally marry. One third of U.S. citizens now live in states that allow same sex couples to legally marry.

  • My take on this as a Christian is that if a country is not proclaimed to be a “Christian” nation (barely means anything now anyway), and there’s an insistence on separation between church and state, why not make it legal? If you allow people to get married in drive-thrus by a guy dressed like Elvis than how is this someone less “sanctified”? However, I don’t think it’s fair to force that belief on others and attempt to force pastors to marry everybody. Many pastors are already very selective about who they agree to marry, and I think in a country that gives the constitutional right to freedom of religion gives them the freedom to marry within Biblical guidelines. Not to say any of the Christians I know think anything different of homosexuals than anyone else – I think those that do are sadly hypocritical and missing the point.

  • BREAKING NEWS – After the recent ruling in SOUTH CAROLINA which ruled that the state’s ban on civil marriage for same sex couples was unconstitutional, the state then asked the 4th Circuit Federal Appeals court to ‘stay’ that decision, which would have allowed the state to continue denying marriage until further legal appeals had been exhausted. The 4th Circuit has just denied that request for a stay and same sex couples are now legally marrying in the state of South Carolina as of today.

  • BREAKING NEWS – The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to extend the two-week ‘stay’ that was delaying the implementation of a recent federal ruling which ruled that the ban on civil marriage for same sex couples in the state of ALABAMA was unconstitutional, and marriage licenses are being issued to same sex couples as of NOW. This brings the total to 37 states plus Washington, D.C.

  • BREAKING NEWS – In a pending case regarding Puerto Rico’s ban on civil marriage for same sex couples, the government of Puerto Rico has just submitted a new brief to the court acknowledging that the ban is unconstitutional, and is abandoning their defense of the ban. This will result in Puerto Rico providing civil marriage for same sex couples very soon, no later than the ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court in June. From the Puerto Rico government’s new brief : “Because Puerto Rico’s marriage ban impermissibly burdens Plaintiffs´ rights to the equal protection of the laws and the fundamental right to marry, we have decided to cease defending its constitutionality based on an independent assessment about its validity under the current state of the law.”

  • BREAKING NEWS – in TEXAS, a SECOND trial has just ruled that the state’s ban on same sex marriage, and ban on recognizing same sex marriages from other states, is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. From the ruling: 5. Article I, Section 32 of the Texas Constitution is unconstitutional as it denies specific group of citizens due process and equal protection under the law without rational justification. 6. Texas Family Code, Section 6.204 is unconstitutional as it denies a specific group of citizens due process and equal protection under the law without a rational justification. 7. Texas Family Code, Section 102.003 is unconstitutional as it applies to parents of child born during a legal same-sex marriage where the facts support that the parties agreed to have the child and be that child s parents and no other legal parent exists, because in that application it denies a specific group of citizens the right to parent his or her own child and denies that specific group due process and equal protection under the law without a rational justification.

  • BREAKING NEWS – in the case for same sex marriage in PENNSYLVANIA, Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito, Jr., has denied a Pennsylvania county clerk’s plea to stop such marriages in that state. This removes the last legal barrier to Pennsylvania becoming the nineteenth state in which same-sex marriages are permitted. A federal judge had previously struck down the state ban, and state officials declined to appeal. The Schuylkill County clerk sought to appeal in their place, but that move has now been turned down at all three levels of the federal court system.

  • This was really well made and a very creative way to get the message out there…! Like a small movie in itself. This should be shown on finnish television, as we are currently struggling with legalizing gay marriage here! I really hope it’s just a matter of time as the rest of our fellow nordic countries have already made it possible for gay couples to get married and we should follow their great example. Much love from Finland <3

  • It’s the same way Americans legally changed definition of marriage to include marriage between different races. Contrary to popular belief the move did not result in a push for polygamy. Just such a gay marriage will not lead to incestuous marriages between siblings of the same gender. Having heterosexual marriage doesn’t lead to incestuous relations between siblings of the opposite gender either.

  • I think this ad is great and really helps out for people that may be different such as myself. It makes me feel like I have the right to be with who I want to be. Nobody is hurting anybody let love be love. I feel people should be allowed to be who they are. Our world has come along way and is progressing positively. There are way more things things to worry about rather than what someones orientation might be!

  • BREAKING NEWS – The District court of OHIO has just ruled that the states ban on recognition of same sex marriage is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. From the ruling: “The record before the Court, which includes the judicially-noticed record in Obergefell, is staggeringly devoid of any legitimate justification for the State’s ongoing arbitrary discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and, therefore, Ohio’s marriage recognition bans are facially unconstitutional and unenforceable under any circumstances.”

  • BREAKING NEWS – The state of WYOMING has just declared that the state will not seek to appeal the recent ruling from the Tenth Circuit Federal Appeals Court which ruled that laws denying civil marriage to same sex couples are unconstitutional. The federal District Court for the District of Wyoming has issued an order stating that same sex couples in the state of Wyoming shall be allowed to legally marry effective IMMEDIATELY.

  • BREAKING NEWS in the state if KANSAS – A few weeks ago, the 10th Circuit Federal Court of Appeals ruled that bans on civil marriage for same sex couples were unconstitutional, in a case that originated in the state of Utah. This 10th Circuit ruling applies to all other states within the 10th circuit, including Kansas. Since then, the state of Kansas has been seeking to avoid or delay complying with this federal court decision by filing frivolous additional requests to the courts, even though this is now settled law in that circuit, and the state has requested the U.S. Supreme Court to grant a “stay” in the earlier ruling which would continue to delay implementation of the Circuit Court’s mandate until all of these pointless and redundant cases are each dismissed. But today, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to issue such a “stay”, meaning that same sex couples can now begin legally marrying in the state of Kansas, regardless of any additional foot-dragging and frivolous litigation attempted by the state to delay the implementation of the mandate from the 10th Circuit.

  • It’s interesting how many comments there are here along the lines of “you can do what you want, just don’t be all gross about it in front of me”, as if the debate about gay marriage was about PDA and not about actual human rights. How about we tackle the human rights issue, and then we can go about worrying about our own, far more inconsequential problems we have about PDA?

  • Despite the ruling in Australia today, same sex marriage has arrived in Australia. Although this decision today will interrupt the marriages, they will certainly resume. This is the way it always plays out – you just can’t put equal rights back in the bottle. Here in California, we went through a few of these cycles of “two steps forward, one step back” that first involved same sex marriages happening briefly, then those marriages being annulled by a court ruling due to our “Prop 22” law, which then triggered a court case and a ruling that overturned Prop 22 and allowed marriages to resume again with full legal recognition, then a period of time when they had to halt again due to the enactment of an unconstitutional measure called Prop 8 (but by then there were already 18,000 valid same sex marriages that could not be annulled) until the trials to definitively rule Prop 8 unconstitutional could make their way through the courts. And once the Prop 8 trials concluded, same sex marriage resumed again in California and it is here to stay, no different in our law than any other legal marriage. These processes have a clear path, and once it reaches its conclusion, justice prevails and needlessly discriminatory laws get overturned. And the court records of those trials remain to prevent a similar unjust law from being enacted again.

  • On Upworthy it said “if this article makes you uncomfortable, you make me uncomfortable.” Well, it DID make me uncomfortable. Cricket? Seriously? On the beach? Now THAT made me uncomfortable!!! Seriously, though, it was pretty obvious where the article was going from the start. From a strictly heterosexual Christian male’s point of view, this country (well, the entire world, really) needs to get over their stodgy discrimination and bigotry when it comes to same-sex couples. It is just as bad as racial and gender discrimination, and makes about as much sense. Specifically for America, one of the reasons this country was founded in the first place was to escape religious persecution. That’s why the separation of church and state was such an important part of the constitution. Yet we are still stuck in this backwater religious attitude when it comes to marriage. The entire purpose of our constitution is to ensure everyone has equal rights. The message of this article needs to be tattooed into the brains of our politicians so they can understand how important this issue is!

  • Hey ‘iwavemyprivateparts’ – Civil marriage for same sex couples is advancing far faster than any other rights issue in the history of the country. Laws that denied civil marriage to same sex couples have been overturned in thirty five states, mostly just in the past year. There will almost certainly be a final ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2015 which will bring same sex marriage to any remaining states that haven’t already done so by then. So don’t worry, I’ll run out of good news about these unconstitutional bans being overturned in the near future because they’ll all be gone. You’ll just have to put up with reading about this progress until then. Enjoy.

  • The New Mexico State Supreme Court has just unanimously ruled in favor of same sex marriage, making it the 17th state in the U.S. with equal civil marriage rights for same sex couples. Some excerpts fro the ruling: “Because same-gender couples (whether lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, hereinafter “LGBT”) are a discrete group which has been subjected to a history of discrimination and violence, and which has inadequate political power to protect itself from such treatment, the classification at issue must withstand intermediate scrutiny to be constitutional.” “We conclude that the purpose of New Mexico marriage laws is to bring stability and order to the legal relationship of committed couples by defining their rights and responsibilities as to one another, their children if they choose to raise children together, and their property. Prohibiting same-gender marriages is not substantially related to the governmental interests advanced by the parties opposing same-gender marriage or to the purposes we have identified. Therefore, barring individuals from marrying and depriving them of the rights, protections, and responsibilities of civil marriage solely because of their sexual orientation violates the Equal Protection Clause under Article II, Section 18 of the New Mexico Constitution. We hold that the State of New Mexico is constitutionally required to allow same-gender couples to marry and must extend to them the rights, protections, and responsibilities that derive from civil marriage under New Mexico law.

  • Why is it so difficult for some people to understand what is different from them? What’s wrong with this article? Nothing! It shows love, affection, kindness, it shows LIFE as it is! I see so many people who didn’t like the article as if it were something terrifying. And many of these people say they are prepared for great discoveries! It will be? With that attitude?

  • Sam123 45678 : You are confusing a legal, “civil marriage” (like when you go to City Hall and get a legal “Certificate of Civil Marriage”, which is what makes people ‘LEGALLY married” and conveys all of the important legal rights and legal protections of legal civil marriage), with a symbolic religious ‘wedding ceremony’, which may be personally important to the couple, but does NOT convey legal rights and is NOT “legal marriage”. It is just a symbolic ceremony to celebrate the marriage. This issue is NOT about requiring religious groups to perform a religious wedding ceremony for a gay couple (or a Hindu couple, or an atheist couple, or a previously divorced couple, or any other couple whose marriage may go against the beliefs of that religion). This is about overturning a CIVIL LAW that is denying same sex couples access to the legal document which gives them legal recognition as being ‘legally married’. So yes, there already IS a ‘separate institution’ from the religious ceremony and religious beliefs about marriage that may be held by your religion (or any other religion). It is LEGAL CIVIL MARRIAGE, and there is no religious element to it at all. People who have no religious beliefs at all go to City Hall and get legally married every day with no involvement from any religion. And by the way, although you are certainly free to consider marriage as ‘sacred’ according to your personal beliefs, marriage existed long, long before any religion decided to get involved by performing religious ceremonies to celebrate marriages.

  • The thing I don’t get about objections to gay marriage – okay, let’s say that you find the idea of gay/lesbian love/sex utterly repugnant. As long as you don’t have to see it – and you don’t – why do you care? I don’t like the idea of my parents doing the nasty, but what, I should force them to sleep in separate bedrooms?

  • En Argentina tenemos Matrimonio Igualitario (erroneamente llamado Matrimonio Gay) hace 4 años y ya se casaron casi 10 mil personas al de hoy. =) ——————————————– In Argentina we have Equal Marriage (erroneously called Gay Marriage) 4 years ago and nearly 10 thousand people married until today. =)

  • I’m say one once since I don’t like to comment on YouTube articles. As a Christian I should not take anyone’s right to be gay, my opinions, beliefs and all shouldn’t affect the rights of others, of they want to be gay let them be gay, I don’t like it and I have all sufficient reasons to think it’s wrong in every way, but that’s not a reason to take their right to be. My only duty as a Christian is to tell them what I think is right, tell them there is a way out and the rest is up to them. God doesn’t take your right to choose to sin or not, so why do you want to take theirs?

  • BREAKING NEWS – A law suit has just been filed in the state of NORTH DAKOTA to overturn that states ban on civil marriage for same sex couples. This is the LAST STATE in the country to do so. As of today, every state in the USA either has a trial in progress to overturn its ban on same sex marriage, or has already ruled that its ban is unconstitutional and is now completing the process to overturn the law, or is already allowing same sex couples to legally marry. Over 40% of Americans already live in a state that allows same sex couples to legally marry.

  • MORE BREAKING NEWS – Just ONE DAY after the U.S. Supreme Court decided to let stand all of the lower court decisions in favor of same sex marriage from five states, the 9th Circuit appeals court has just ruled in a pair of appeals cases for the states of IDAHO and NEVADA, once again confirming that denying the rights and protections of civil marriage to same sex couples violates the federal Constitution. This will bring same sex marriage to both Idaho and Nevada, as well as the remaining states in the 9th Circuit that didn’t already allow same sex marriage – MONTANA, ARIZONA, and ALASKA. This brings the number of states with same sex marriage to THIRTY FIVE. The ruling is here: scribd.com/doc/242213594/9th-Circuit-Opinion

  • BREAKING NEWS – Earlier today, same sex couples began legally marrying in every county in the state of ILLINOIS. With marriages recently beginning in Oregon as well, as of today well over 40% of Americans live in a state that provides equal civil marriage rights for same sex couples, in 19 states plus Washington DC.

  • Why is it that people that use the bible as an excuse expect me to believe in their religion? If its your religion and not mine i dont see the reason why i must follow the rules of it. Lets say i had a god that supported gay marriage and i believed in him. And you had your god. But you told me to follow the rules of your god. Thats like telling me to listen to your countries political leader even though he/she may not be my countries leader. So please stop assuming every single person follows your religions rules.

  • Civil marriage rights for same sex couples are advancing far, far faster than the last remaining attempts to legislate against equal rights for these couples. The number of U.S. states with same sex marriage doubled in just the past year, an exponential increase in the rate, and several more states are now in the process of allowing same sex marriage. In addition, several other countries are currently in the process of changing their civil laws to allow same sex couples to legally marry. ….and “life site news”? Really? What a bunch of frothing melodramatic rhetoric. Their “reporting” about the Hawaii civil marriage decision is just one lie after another. The truth is the majority of Hawaiian citizens fully support the rights of same sex couples to legally marry, and the law was changed to remove unnecessarily harmful restrictions in the law and bring it closer into compliance with principles of the Constitution. And nope, marriage clearly doesn’t always mean one man & one woman. Same sex couples have been legally marrying for years now and their marriages are legally the same as other marriages. You don’t like it. We get that. So what? It’s not about you.

  • Okay, the explanation for heterosexism has to be that these people are so miserable that they hate seeing happy couples. But instead of targeting straight couples, they attack gay couples because gays are in the minority. I mean that has to be the explanation right? Because the only thing us happy people see is two adorably happy same sex partners living their best lives.

  • Re-posted because commenter “pqxxedf” below is deleting replies in his thread about his ridiculous ‘jaywalker analogy’: You’re not very good at forming a logical argument, are you? Jaywalking is illegal because it impacts public safety. Now explain how giving a civil marriage license to a same sex couple, instead of them living without the license, impacts public safety. See, that’s the whole point – laws against same sex marriage don’t serve any legitimate purpose. And you can’t make laws that target a group of citizens for different treatment, and harm those citizens, with an unnecessary law that serves no beneficial purpose. That’s why, in state after state, trial after trial, those laws that deny civil marriage to same sex couples are all being overturned. Those laws are harmful and unnecessary and blatantly unconstitutional.

  • Its not about a couple of homosexuals tying the knot. Its about the legal implications of adopting children, who has them when the relationship breaks up, and more importantly who foots the bill. Thats the reality of marriage. Marriage is a legal contract, if you think otherwise then please dont get married.

  • BREAKING NEWS – a federal judge in Tennessee has granted a preliminary injunction requiring state officials to legally recognize the marriages of three same-sex couples who are plaintiffs in a case currently challenging the state’s ban on recognition of same sex marriages performed outside the state. Until now, when citizens have taken this issue of civil marriage for same sex couples to court in previous trials in other states, the courts would withhold recognition of their civil marriage rights until the trial and all appeals had been concluded. But courts cannot do this when it is highly likely that the plaintiffs will prevail, and when doing so would simply prolong denial of equal legal treatment. In the decision to grant the injunction, the court wrote: “At this point, all signs indicate that, in the eyes of the United States Constitution, the plaintiffs’ marriages will be placed on an equal footing with those of heterosexual couples and that proscriptions against same-sex marriage will soon become a footnote in the annals of American history.”

  • MORE BREAKING NEWS – the TENTH CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS has just ruled in agreement with the lower court’s ruling in the state of UTAH, ruling that denying civil marriage to same sex couples is unconstitutional. This ruling from the higher federal circuit appeals court also applies to COLORADO, KANSAS, NEW MEXICO, and WYOMING.

  • I really don’t get why everyone has a such a problem with people who don’t like gays. I think it’s wrong and it makes me feel uncomfortable. Everybody is perfectly happy to slag off “homophobes”, but nobody ever takes into account the fact that I DO NOT have to agree with your opinion. Suddenly its all “omg how culd u say dat!!!” and “wtf your so wrong!”. I never wanted to go out of my way to offend or upset gay people, but the more im persecuted for my views the more i feel like i should retaliate. Be careful what you breed.

  • It should make everyone uncomfortable. However, we now have a generation of godless obliviots who have no clue about unchanging truth. Unfortunately, life will hand them a big pile of reality one day, and it won’t be pretty. Repent, stop living for yourself, stop being a slave to your lusts, dead in your sins. Turn to Jesus, and live. He gave everything for us, not so we could be free TO sin, but that we could be free FROM sin. Turn to Jesus, and live. REALLY live.

  • Who cares? Everyone acts like supporting gay marriage in some way elevates them from those that are against it. It’s this type of “Us vs them” mentality that is the reason there is discrimination anyways. The vast majority of you people are just jumping on the bandwagon. If we lived in a different time period you all would be on the other side of the fence. You follow cultural trends, gay marriage being cool is a cultural trend, so you support it. Personally I could care less of gays get married, or if fat people get married or if super models get married. It’s nothing to me. So stop spamming all these stupid emotionally charged articles so all the morons can post it on facebook and feel like they’re better than everyone else. You’re not.

  • I’m probably going to get shot down here, I believe that was a sweet article, yet the subject is not necessarily marriage discrimination. Bluntly, it is the justification of Gay or Lesbian love through marriage. Now I’m a Christian, I don’t really believe in same sex relationships. I’m not going to tell someone else how to live their life though. However, my values stand that marriage is a life-long relationship between a man and a woman outlined through the Bible. Do Christians hate gays? Absolutely not, we just don’t exactly share an opinion on the same issue 😉

  • All the negative comments and the comments of the “we don’t need this” type show exactly WHY we need these types of articles. Of course, some people are so indoctrinated and/or in the closet that they’ll react violently no matter what. Tough on them. Yes to marriage equality. Love is love, not gender.

  • “Despite the claims of the technobores, in the second half of the century hardly anything has changed—except the nature of change. Our bathrooms, kitchens, cars, planes, and high-rises have barely altered. Instead, having run out of useful things to invent, we’ve reinvented ourselves and embarked, with a remarkable insouciance, on redefining human identity.” Mark Steyn, Canadian Journalist and author
