I’ve discovered Deftones in the early 2000s, they blew my mind from the first song and I have been a fan ever since. I have ventured into different kinds of metal and punk music but Deftones have always had a very special place in my heart and a playlist of their own in my phone. Truly fantastic band I love the way they have evolved their music and “grew”. I was 19-20 and now I’m almost 40, I can safely say that I grew up with them
I got off work and driving home the sun was setting in the horizon as I drove towards it. The sun beams breaking through the clouds and this song began to play for the first time through my car stereo. It was a euphoric experience and one experience I haven’t felt in such a long time. I have an idea for a PHANTOM BRIDE article: It begins in a church where a wedding is being held, it’s full of guests where the Deftones are as guests and they also make bridal band, with tuxedo and everything. The groom is waiting for the bride to arrive at the altar, while the bride is preparing her and dancing in her room. Everyone’s clothing is White, the bride and groom, the guests, the Deftones and the priest. When the couple is about to kiss each other, everyone disappear, except for the girl and the Deftones (who now they dress completely in black) and the church lights go out. The girl leaves the church and finds a crowd gathered in white dress and she intrudes in the middle to see what happened and discovers the groom is embracing a corpse in a wedding dress, which is her (who she apparently would have died before entering church) The girl is surprised to realize that her dress, which was white, turns black and when she turns around, she is inside the same church, again, with all the guests, the groom, the Deftones and the same priest who was going to marry her, wearing black clothes and a coffin where she is, the groom approaches the corpse and he puts the wedding ring on her finger, while the bride (spirit) observes his hand and she has the same ring. At the end of the article the priest closes the coffin and the spirit of the bride disappears.
Deftones are constantly evolving. one band that’s stayed ahead of the curve and literally killed it with every last album. this is one album unlike the others, with way more melodies then I previously ever remember on other albums, but damn has it grown on me. can’t wait to see them live later this summer.
I came across this song months ago and found it describing “moments” I was dealing with. Months pass and some how I find this song reaching out to me again, like little pieces of the puzzle coming together. Deftones has an energy to their music that pulls all the emotions in you out and allows you experience them. Deftones is by far my favorite band. Thank you for sharing your talents with the world.
Every time I listen to this song I cannot help thinking of a very close friend of mine and what she deals with in life. I know what she’s gone through– her family breaking up right before her eyes, a neglectful mother, a father who only recently became an inmate after a life of drugs. I know she needs an ear to hear her out and a shoulder to cry on but she never allows herself to fall so low. She has a little sister who must see her brave any emotion. So she insists on having no feelings of sadness or compassion, and has been doing this for several years now. And it’s come to the point where she’s started to believe it’s true. So this song speaks to me because she’s spent her life trapped in a void of no emotion, but I know that when she breaks down she won’t have any control of the sorrow and anger she’s held back for so many years. It’s so frustrating to see her deny her emotion. It scares me to think that she will break down someday, but I feel like I can do nothing but wait for it

Para mis amigos de habla hispana, sí este article tuviera un article, les plantería mi idea para tal: Empieza en una iglesia donde se está celebrando una boda llena de invitados en donde los Deftones están como invitados y además hacen de banda nupcial, con trajes y todo. El novio está esperando que la novia llegue al altar, mientras que la novia se está preparando y baila en su habitación, la ropa de todos es Blanca, de los novios, de los invitados, de los Deftones y la del cura. Cuando la pareja está por darse el beso de casados, todos desaparecen, menos la chica y los Deftones (que ahora visten completamente de negro) y las luces de la iglesia se apagan. La chica sale de la iglesia y encuentra una multitud reunida con traje blanco y se entromete en el medio para ver qué pasaba y descubre que su novio está abrazando un cadaver con vestido de novia, que es ella (que aparentemente habría muerto antes de entrar a la iglesia). I’ve listened to these guys for years now and I’m still impressed and loving their unparalleled artistic abilities. This song just reached in and squeezed my soul to tears. Their music truly is like nothing else I’ve ever heard. Visceral grunge tangled with heavenly vocals leave you completely moved. It’s honestly the most hurtful/needed song I’ve ever heard. I’m in a 3 years just engaged relationship and I feel like we’re just burning time together. WASTING time together. At least for me, she says my feelings as a man need to just get over them and relax. But everything is done on her time, her way, her truth… the way she likes it. My opinion is never valued. It’s destroyed… as if my feelings shouldn’t exist. I’ve been close to committing suicide being next to her. She’s making it seem like it’s me… I’m the problem! I’m the one that needs brain surgery. I need therapy. I’ve worked out, I’ve done my push-ups, I’ve got the job, I’ve gotten everything she asks me to do and still nothing. I still don’t feel loved… It feels more like a partnership/ a business ship more than anything. I don’t know how to feel or respond to this.
