The honeymoon phase of an eating disorder is a period where the body feels good restricting food, and the “high” from starving is felt. This period can last from six months to two years and can be marked with laughter, intimacy, and fun dates. It is a part of a couple’s relationship where everything seems carefree and happy.
The Homeodynamic Recovery Method (HDRM) comprises four phases toward remission of an eating disorder: initial re-feeding, neither/nor phase, must-be-done-by-now phase, and relapse phase. The honeymoon phase is the beginning of an eating disorder when weight just slides off, no bad symptoms or sudden medical problems, and there is no plateau. Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a highly lethal mental disorder manifested by marked food restrictions, resulting in a very thin body habitus, an abnormal focus on body image, and a host of medical complications which progress as the malnutrition worsens.
During this early days, learning to eat intuitively can feel like bingeing. People with eating disorders may experience a phenomenon where the initial stages of the disorder actually weren’t that bad. Instead, they would might have felt more psychologically exhausted but almost energized by their eating disorder.
Intuitive eating is a normal phase to experience when one is first making peace with food. Research is needed to understand what helps eating disorders take hold and what keeps people clinging to them.

I want to share my experience with this audio, the background music always gave me a lot of peace and I loved repeating the sound several times, I didn’t have good self-esteem and I always blamed myself a lot when I ate a lot so I started listening to this audio and I realized that every day it’s easier for me to go without eating or eat little, I want to thank you for this audio because I noticed that I’m getting thinner especially when I do physical exercises and that’s incredible for me since before I used to go a few hours without eating and I was already weak or had compulsion.
Thank you so much! My story is very complicated but around 4 years ago when I was in 6th grade I developed anorexia and it lasted until 8th grade. It caused me to have brain fog and I was bed ridden for a year which caused me to develop scoliosis. I ended up binging food to cope and I’ve gained a lot because of it. But I just started listening and the thought of food disgusts me now which is rare.
%* 🥕🌿🍰 ~ fasting from 4/12 to 4/?? Update 1, 4/13: haven’t eaten at ALL today, which is insane because Madeline does online school n usually eats out of boredom or something else, hasn’t had any urges to eat at all and even now that dinner is made I still don’t feel like eating. Madeline’s very content with the results as she hasn’t fasted before, can’t wait to see how long it’ll last 🙂 It’s likely this’ll be updated later tonight btw.
Been listening for 4 days. I wanted to weigh 120 by October. Rn I’m 155lbs. I started restricting again an it’s honestly not that hard. I feel hunger here an there but if I drink something it goes away! I used to binge eat a lot. But then ya girl started symptom swapping when she was attempting to recover, an then I unintentionally started restricting. Do again I wanted to recover by eating well an exercising, an now I’m back to restrictions again 😀 I ate 3 small scoops of ice cream an almost had a breakdown because I’m supposed to be fasting. Yep….having an Ed is so fun. I won’t lie, it comforts me in a way when I know there are others like me, but I would never wish this on my WORST enemy

I know this is old, but damn did this hit home for me. I am about 2.5 weeks into recovery and it was feeling “easy” but today I found myself on the floor in a ball of ugly tears because the weight of it all fully hit me. I had anxiety, I had anger about not exercising, but the eating part was fast and intense, and then today happened and I just wanted so badly to go back to restricting, back to tiny portions, back to my routine.
I definitely was in the “honeymoon phase” the first month because I knew I had to gain weight or I would die. Now that I’ve gained 20 lbs I’m coming out of that and feeling like I don’t need to gain the other 30 pounds since I’ve gained 20. It’s hard, and it’s hard because I was thinking “oh this is so much easier than I thought, it’s almost too easy” but then suddenly it got very hard!
Great article! I’ve been having the same experience recently. My love-hate relationship with food is driving me crazy. I’m still trying to learn the difference between hunger and fullness but I’m having trouble stopping eating when I’m full. I feel the urge to keep eating. It makes me feel horrible because I’m eating food that is not on the meal plan. Is this normal? What should I do?
