The marriage age in the United States is the minimum age at which a person can marry as a right or with parental consent or other authorization. This age is set by each state and territory, either by statute or where common law applies. The legal age of consent varies from 16 to 18 years old from state to state. In the United States, child marriage is not legal in any state, as the minimum marriage age in most states is 18. However, some countries have raised the legal age of marriage for girls to 16 or 17.
The minimum marriageable age requirements of 12 years old for females and 14 years old for males were written into English civil law and became the minimum marriage ages in colonial America. By 1900, most states had passed laws setting a minimum age of 18 for both men and women. The average marriage age for women has been steadily climbing since colonial times.
In Nigeria, the legal age for marriage varies depending on the type of marriage. For statutory marriages, the legal age is 18 years for both males and females, while for customary and Islamic marriages, the legal age can be lower, with a minimum of 12 years for girls and 14 years for boys.
The general marriage age (lacking authorization for an exception) is 18 years of age in all states except Nebraska, where the general marriage age is 19, and Mississippi, where the general marriage age is 21. Most states require the parties to be at least age 18 (the typical age of “majority,” or legal adulthood) to marry without parental consent or judicial approval. Equality Now and its partners advocate that the minimum age for marriage be set at 18, no exceptions.

📹 America has a massive child marriage problem
In the US nearly every state allows child marriage. In some there are even loopholes that allow child rapists to avoid prosecution …
My father was trying to marry me off at 14 and finally succeeded two months after my 16th birthday. My husband was 20 and someone I had literally met 2 weeks prior. I was a virgin the day we got married and a mother 9 months and 8 days after our low cost wedding in Reno. I was given a choice “Go to foster care or marry your new boyfriend”.
I was forced to marry a 17 year old man when I was 14 in the state of Virginia. I was not pregnant, and did not know my husband until the day before our wedding. I never said “I do”,because I didn’t want to get married yet. It wasn’t until my mom stepped on my foot when I finally blurted out,”Yeah,I guess so!” I’ve never been on tv,or radio about this. There was a financial agreement between my mother and the guys parents. This still happens all over america and the world. Update: I found that when we moved to NY our marriage wasn’t recognized by the law in NY,but was in VA . We broke up for multiple reasons but not before we had a son. I have been divorced from him for 30 years . I feel my life was robbed from me,and always wonder what my life would be like if I never was married off as a kid
I was 3 months into being 16 years old. When my mother & step dad drove me to another state to get married. I tried to get out and go home a year later but my step dad refused me & my baby. Its going on 17 years now that ive been married. I never made it back home. I didnt get to go to school, my whole life ended when i was forced to marry.
The woman with short dark hair from Unchained doing the talking. She was one of the thousands forced into marriage by their families at 18. Her husband was an abuser who tortured her psychologically for years until she was finally able to escape. PBS estimate 3000 a year of 18/19yo girls are forced into marriages by their families and they seem to be from strong conservative religious groups, both evangelical and – in the case of the woman from Unchained – orthodox Jewish communities. This is every bit as repulsive as child marriages, and not connected to arranged marriages where both partners consent, and the USA needs to start doing something about these as well. Stop preaching to the world and get your own house into order first.
i am surprised, i understood this was happening in south east Asia, India, china and some places in middle east…..but America ? so women hve same problems everywhere and men are the same….women …freedom…where is all that…america …rectify yourself first before behaving like champions of human rights and threatening the world…
My friend’s parents are from Bangladesh and she got married to her dad at only 15, my friend is 13 so thankfully her parents aren’t walking in the same path as their parents had by forcing her and her older brother into marrige… we recently thought about it and if she lived in Bangladesh there is a possibility that her parents might be finding her a husband…
In the 1980s, when I was a teen, in New York I learned the law was marriage was legal from 16-18 with parental consent and from 14-16 with parental consent AND approval of a judge. (I suppose there may be some extreme situation that might give someone reason to marry at 14 or 15.) I would kind of hate to see the federal government get involved but could someone in congress come up with a bill to share with representatives in each state to ratify? Nothing complex, just a law much like the one we had in New York, or perhaps a simple, “Marriage is not legal in America before age 16.” It may not cure the problem but it would clear up a lot of confusion, “borderline” situations, draws a line to make prevention and prosecution more widespread and much easier.
I grew up in mississippi. My father signed my marriage liscence. Several girls and even one boy was married at my highschool. The youngest girl was my friend dee, She got married a week after her 15th birthday. I graduated highschool in 1990. I have an aunt who got married at 15 to another 15 year old. My grandparents had died and a judge signed her marriage lisece
i would like to see this broken down by consent, religion, race, etc. in order to determine exactly how “massive” of a problem this is for the US. it’s one thing to say that a 12 year old who is pregnant because of rape was forcibly married to an adult is a problem and another to say that two 16 year old’s choose to get married is a problem. but you just seem to lump the numbers together and tell us that somewhere between 0% and 99% of these children are being forcibly married to adults. edit* just remembered why website 4 news sounded familiar. so you’re saying…..
I WOULD TAKE THAT PERP AND MY MOTHER WOULD AND FATHER TO COURT AND THE CITY FOR NOT PROTECTING THE CHILD . THIS IS ALL WRONG A DOG GETS TREATED BETTER THEN THAT. THIS IS A RAPE CASE AND THEN HAVE TO MARRY THAT PERPETRATOR THE INTIRE CRAZY ALL STATES TO PROTECT CHILD FEMALES NO YOUNG CHILD SHOULD BE FORCED CHILDREN SHOULD NOT EVER BE ABUSED NO ( NO CHIKREN NO RELIGIOUS PRACTICE ALOUD TO ABUSE A CHILD IN THAT TYPE OF FORCED
Unless I missed it somewhere in your article, the race and or culture of these child brides aren’t mentioned. Keep in mind that the US has many immigrants from many countries, i.e. India, Brazil, Indonesia who have high rates of child marriage. In Minnesota, there is a huge Somali population that has a high child bride incidence in their country. So, could this be a reason for the child marriages here in the US? The marry your victim law to avoid prosecution has to be changed. Rape is rape regardless and in these cases pedophile rape, so whoever made those laws are probably patriarchal type men.
I had to gringe at this article. Anyone in there teens 15 and over should be able to have a voice in their sexual lives. They are aware of there choice and fighting for there freedoms. I get that there are lots of abuses. But why throw out the hole bunch when you can pick threw the bushel and save the good apples. I guess by putting a label(age) you are throwing out the hole lot of apples. You do not here of the success stories, becouse there not reported. But you do here about the abuse stories. I am for stopping abuse or bullying all together, parental boss childhood bullying needs to be dealt with. but to call to 17 year old sexually abusing themselves is ludicrous. If a 16 and a 40 year old have permission from court, parent, and friends. then you need to let well enough alone as you would be spoiling a good apple bad. let’s end rape for what it is, and not label an age on it as if its going to stop underage sexual assaults. if the person wants this let them well enough alone. but if they do not want it, give them all the opportunity to get help. I do believe that any sexual conduct out of marriage under the age eighteen needs to be seen by a judge and that there should be exceptions to the rule. especially if the underage wants that relationship.
This is one of the most bizarre reports I’ve have seen. Why aren’t any statistics shown. race and religious issues are ignored and I am completely unable to understand the scale of the problem, why this is happening and who is doing it. Would I be right in saying the first case loosely points towards a white Christian male? Maybe a priest or pastor raping and marrying a black teenager? I’m not entirely sure? I believe out of all the cases of this so called ‘child marriage’ this is a one off compared to the amount of Muslim arranged marriages etc. It appears to be purposely bashing white people for some alarming extreme, leftist political agenda. It is so clear to see dont they realise the general public are not brain dead, left wing, zombies. Stop insulting our intelligence and start reporting the truth.
Let’s get something straight here, I’m not talking about forced marriages, that’s wrong, but I am talking about is it ok to marry a young adult. Age of consent to marry is based on one thing and that’s menstrual cycles. It was stated in the article logical reasons for young adult marriage today. Reason one, healthy children. A woman giving birth at 15 has a 1 in 2,434 chance of giving birth to a child with birth defects and at just age 20 it drops to 1 in 1323 losing nearly 50% in five years and by 27 she moves into the high risk category. Reason two, because God in his infinite wisdom said so. Reason three, men being shown pictures of women from ages 12-45 gauging there attractiveness shows that men agree that a woman reaches her prime at 18. Right or wrong does not change with technological advancement or modernization of civilization in what occurs naturally. Sorry women but your in your feelings on this one.
I’m for child marriage. I think people are against it for the wrong reasons, to inflate their egotistical moral superiority. And besides which, young adolescent girls who have already gone through puberty are not children. This is about ripping men off and reducing men to meaningless ciphers whithout any true manhood or individuality.
