What Is The Man Of Honor At A Wedding?

A man of honor is a male member of the wedding party who plays an important role in the ceremony and celebration. They typically step in when there are no brothers or sisters present, and the title holds the same rank as maid of honor. The best man or woman has many of the same responsibilities as the maid of honor, only their job is to support the groom. For that reason, a sibling or best friend is usually tapped to fulfill this role.

A man of honor can either walk directly after the groom or alongside the maid of honor after the rest of the wedding party members have entered. The wedding party members can walk down the aisle individually or in pairs. The person or people standing farthest away from the couple would enter first.

A man of honor can help with various wedding planning tasks, such as attending vendor meetings, helping with DIY projects, and offering input on wedding decisions. Their role is to be a reliable and helpful resource for the bride. The traditional name for a male bridesmaid is a bridesman or a bride’s attendant, while a male maid of honor is called an honor attendant or simply a man of honor.

A man of honor has the honor of standing next to the bride as she says “I do,” holding the groom’s ring, fluffing her train, and holding her bouquet as she says “I do.” If you want him to be your honor attendant, you can call him the man of honor. If you want him to stand with the bridesmaids, you can call him a bridesman.

In summary, having a man of honor at your wedding is a wonderful way to acknowledge the bond you share with your male best friend. They can assist with planning pre-wedding events and help with the wedding planning process.

  • I’ve watched this article so many times—this is one of my favorites that you’ve made! Soo helpful! My best friend is non-binary, and we’ve already discussed how she prefers the title “Friend of Honor” to “Maid of Honor.” The current plan is to have her and my one bridesman in suspenders with bowties that coordinate with my bridesmaids’ dresses, as opposed to the suits and long ties of the groomsmen.

  • I love this, thanks! Also Remember people can be nonbinary too and a lot of people who are trans or nonbinary feel pressured to wear a dress because they were made bridesmaid or jealous and upset they have to wear a boring suit maybe because people expected them to etc etc. This idea extends and opens up possibilities to really accommodate your gender nonconforming and/or trans friends and siblings! Plus like at my aunt and uncle’s wedding my uncle awkwardly was putting his bride’s brother in his party just because he’s a guy and it would have made more sense for my dad to be in his sister’s wedding party. The intense gendered rules are so unnecessary!

  • If my groom was to have his female best friend stand up with him how could I differentiate the groom’s woman from the bridesmaids. I haven’t picked out dresses or anything it’s a winter wedding my bridesmaids are going to be wearing like a deep foresty pine. The colors are pine, navy blue, and black/gold (white and gold as my like accents through my decor).

  • I’m having 1 bridesman and 7 bridesmaids ! We’ve been best friends since high school and couldn’t imagine leaving him out just because he’s a man. He’ll be wearing the same suit a the groomsman but will have a different tie !! I’m also thinking maybe a small boutonnière (not sure yet..) for him ( the groomsmen and groom wouldn’t wear one.)

  • We are having both sexes on both sides. My sister is my Matron of Honor and my 3 brothers will be my bridesmen. His close female cousin is his Best Lady and his best friend is his groomsman alongside a portrait of my FH’s little brother who passed 5 years ago and if he was alive he would have been up there anyway. The guys are getting ready together and we girls are getting ready together and the wedding party will be hanging out at both the bride’s room and groom’s room ❤
