I’m working on designing my wedding band and have been working at it for quite a few months — some of this advice is great and some of the “rules” are perfectly subjective. You make excellent points sir and from reading many of the comments, ultimately the #1 rule for designing/choosing your wedding ring is that it should make you happy and proud. It should be meaningful to you, even if it breaks some of the traditional “rules”!
just for everyones information, sterling silver is harder and more durable than gold, what makes 9kt and 10kt and 14kt gold more durable than 18kt and above is that they have more silver giving them more durability Also, tungsten is very good as a wedding band material, as is titanium and other materials. You do not need gold just because this guy says you need gold
I think there’s a case to be made for alternative metals here. Anything blacked out or with a weird finish isn’t going to look great and regular tungsten is (for me) always just a shade too dark, but cobalt, palladium, and even titanium are otherwise pretty good as white gold alternatives. Resizing is tricky but you don’t lose anything on looks. And they’re way tougher, which IMHO is what you want in a ring like this. Same logic as with clothes: for an evening suit you’re only going to wear twice a year you can go with a finer material but for the pair of jeans you wear every day you really need it to be able to take a beating, and even 10k gold isn’t so great for that kind of abuse. My wife and I have a pair of matching cobalt rings that look pretty darn classic but have yet to take on any dents or scratches. Just a quick opinion.
I have heard that 19 k white gold can almost be as strong as platinum but doesn’t form a patina. The jeweler I spoke with also mentioned that it’s alloy will be whiter than 18k gold and that it doesn’t require the Rhodium plating to maintain it’s colour, making it lower maintenance. I was wondering if you know how the alloy changes to get these traits in 19k white gold, and if the claims of improved properties are fair?
4:05 A somewhat related observation I can offer, is that when a ring has a pattern, there will inevitably be a section of the pattern, which the wearer likes more than the rest of the pattern (of course, this is only natural) The issue which this leads to, is that the wearer will continually be adjusting the ring by rotating it, so they are looking at their favorite piece of the pattern; it won’t be a ring they can simply ‘put on and forget about’. Additionally, a pattern could make it difficult – or outright impossible – to re-size without affecting the pattern. My wedding ring is brushed titanium with V-shaped lines engraved into it; the polished lines contrast beautifully with the brushed surface, but, also mean it cannot be re-sized… When I lost a lot of weight, it eventually fell off my hand 😶😶😶😶 Unable to re-size it, I put it on my key-fob, and now wear a bIack brushed ceramic ring (I actually brushed it myself, keeping the outer edges of the ring polished) On the finger, it looks very much like the rubber wedding rings often worn by outdoorsmen/soldiers/etc… It’s very subtle, low-key and inconspicuous, but those polished edges catch the light beautifully, and really imbue it with a touch of class and elegance 😍😍😍😍 More significantly, and to my initial point, I don’t have to continually keep adjusting it as it rotates around my finger, as there is no pattern for me to want to always be looking for my favorite part 👍👍👍👍
