As the US becomes more racially and ethnically diverse, so are married couples. As of 2022, about 7.8 million married couples were of Hispanic origin in the United States, with 63.19 million married couples living in that year. The percentage of married-couple households that were of Hispanic origin has increased significantly, with 66% of white couples still married compared to 58% of American Indians, 28% of Asians, 19% of blacks, and 7% of whites having a spouse whose race was different.

Interracial marriage rates have consistently been higher among African Americans than whites over the decades, with 96% approval now nearly universal. In 2021, there were large racial differences in the likelihood of being married even as early as 1930, when only 69% of ever-married black women in their early 40s were married. Since then, intermarriage rates have steadily climbed, with the share of intermarried newlyweds doubling to 7% by 1980 and 17% by 2015.

The number of mixed unions in Canada has also increased, with 360,045 couples, or 4.6% of all married and common-law couples in Canada, being in mixed unions. Famous mixed-race people such as Jessica Ennis, Lewis Hamilton, and Leona Lewis have been key influences on public acceptance of interracial marriage.

Interracial marriages have increased from 5% in the 1950s to 94% in 2021, with the most common racial or ethnic pairing among newlywed intermarried couples being one Hispanic and one white spouse (42%).

Wealthier households are in the 50th to 75th percentile. Richer households are in the top 25%. The bottom 1% and top 1% are excluded before ranking, so extreme values don’t affect estimates for poorer and richer households.

Lower, middle, and upper wealth tiers refer to a household’s wealth status relative to all other households in the U.S. The middle wealth tier includes households with wealth between one-quarter and four times the median wealth of U.S. households. The lower wealth tier had less than $41,700 in wealth, while the upper wealth tier had more than $667,500. The wealth tiers change from year to year. (Dollar amounts are in December 2021 prices.)

Today, 53% of U.S. adults are married, down from 58% in 1995. The number of Americans who live together has risen from 3% to 7%.
