For the past few months I’ve been fortunate to own a pair of espadrilles, which are a very fun pair of summery shoes to wear, although I wish the toe box were slightly larger.
This is a few years old. In 2023 there are many sharp espadrilles available. I have a blue knit cotton with short laces by Mod Shoes. Also a soft suede pair of summer desert boots by Lambretta with an espadrille sole. They breathe, are comfortable with socks or without, and get compliments from the ladies. I also have a basic pair of black canvass lace up ones by Ben Sherman.

First, great article and great website. I’ve a few random thoughts….I really like that you are who you are and your advice is great. Occasionally, because we are different to you in personality and style we might want to diverge from it (for instance, though I don’t do it myself I wouldn’t want to say that someone couldn’t wear sneakers with a suit. I reckon a youngster with the right attitude could pull it off). I agree about the shoes with the brightly coloured sole – I find them clownish too. But I don’t like contrasting laces for the same reason. Finally, I’ve tried no show socks a few times and never got them to stay in place on the heel. I like the idea but for that reason I go sockless in summer (which does mean I don’t often get the chance to alternate the summer shoes with classic shoes and am restricted to the types I can wear something sockless)
I recently ordered a custom suit and I had a problem with the pocket style regarding where the chest pocket on the jacket was placed. It was placed about an inch further away from the lapel than I regularly see on suit jackets. We will probably remake the coat from scratch. I like to take my Wife and Grand Kids on Vacations to places around my home state of Michigan. I’m not a huge fan of Suede but to each his own I prefer leather Loafers. Now I’m not a rich man but I’m gradually building up my wardrobe (mainly vintage jackets and careful purchases) and plan to buy some penny loafers. There are some closed toe sandals that are hard to beat for hot weather and look great. For example styles like the heinrich dinkelacker london sandal, or even better price wise and decent quality for a Stacy their Caliban sandals. And they look 100% better dress down with shorts than loafers. All the monk strap style sandals pretty much. Light oxfords less europeanish style also look great and also casual with linens, grantstone has a cap toe that I love for this matter.
What gets me is that you denigrate more formal style shoes with funny coloured soles, yet advocate weird looking white brogues with orange laces. Personally, I have a pair of suede derby shoes with a crepe sole (Tricker’s Woodstock). I was initially sceptical and looked to have them resoled. However, I decided to give them a chance and they work quite well.

Nice work Raphael, but you’ve missed a trick on this subject. Do some research and present a article on tying shoe lace knots. So many people learn a basic two loop over knot as a child and never progress further. I generally sport a under-loop knot on formal shoes and go a bit off reservation to express style with other footwear.
In Queensland it’s not unusual to see people walking around barefoot in summer! Flip flops (or thongs as the Aussies call them) are considered to be perfectly acceptable footwear in most scenarios. It also tends to rain a lot in the summer months which I think also discourages people from walking around in proper shoes. Boat shoes are probably the best alternative as it’s unusual to wear trousers in the summer when it is hot and sticky.
Driving shoes are like glorified slippers, they have very little interior support and usually a fairly narrow and thin sole. These shoes are made this way so that while driving you can easily feel the pedals with your feet and the narrow sole prevents the edge of a wider sole from catching the edge of a pedal accidentally. The more they are genuine driving shoes, the worse they are for walking, I learned this the hard way at the expense of my poor feet.
Guys, you need to get over some of these outdated hangups about certain items. I know you’re not crazy about the leather dress sneaker, but think about how people typically dress in modern society – relaxed fit jeans, athletic sneakers, T-shirts and hoodies. If you’ve got on a pair of nice brown leather sneakers, a pair of five pocket chinos, a polo or even a premium well-fitting T-shirt, you’re probably gonna be among the best dressed guys in the room, these days
I disagree with the sneaker part. Many sneakers nowadays are not intended for sports anymore and remain just as a legacy of early gym shoes, but nowadays are just casual shoes that can be paired with chinos or even trousers, specially all white and all black plain sneakers. BTW this doesn’t apply to any contemporary performance sport shoes (except maybe some understated designs found in tennis shoes and other sports).
So much good advice in this article! That said, I really don’t understand your disdain for sandals. If you have nice leather sandals with leather soles, strap-buckled, in brownish, tanish, redish tones, ain’t nothing wrong with that. Yes, don’t wear them to work or to a fancy restaurant, but you wouldn’t wear shorts or casual linen trousers to such places either. So, I think it’s a matter of “feeling” when and where they work. It goes without saying that they work better in very hot places, like Southern Europe and even there, more for a casual brunch or glass of wine. So, those ugly zip-lock sandals German tourists wear with socks? NO! Flip-flops? NO! Decent-looking leather sandals don’t fall into the same cathergory, in my oppinion.

Personally I love the look of a minimal white trainer with formal trousers or a suit as long as you don’t have a shirt and tie with it. As a younger guy I think its a great way to look more dressed up but not out of place when all my friends are wearing tracksuits with sliders.

There’s nothing like coming to an event in sneakers while all the wannabees and phonies are wearing oxfords. But you have to know the rules before you decide to break them.
Everything you say is correct. However, if you do a lot of walking, stay away from leather outsoles. All my shoes have a rubber outsole lining; not the childish colored ones, but a thin black layer that makes every floor feel steady. Unless you’re someone that walks from house to car to office to car to house, stay away from leather outsoles on anything but dancing shoes; they only look good on the first day before you wear them, and they are slippery on a lot of floors. In terms of the whole breathability of a shoe through the outsole, most people will tell you that they notice a difference between leather and rubber outsoles, but it’s psychological more than actuality if you have a high-quality pair in the first place. Quality leather uppers are good enough for breathability. For someone who has tried both for years, the differences are negligible. A leather outsole is more breathable when you think it hard enough.
