The perfect wedding night attire should reflect a couple’s style and personality, with a combination of comfort, style, and accessories. A bride should wear babydolls for a flirty look, nightgowns, corsets, and more. Undergarments are essential for shaping your body and easing the fit of your bridal gown. It is important to get sized, especially for your bra, before or during fittings to ensure comfort all day and night long.
A nylon nightgown can be the best choice for your first wedding night, as it highlights the body and makes the bride appear sexy. Night robes, made from soft fabrics like velvet and silk, blend classy glamor and revealing allure. They come in a wide variety of colors and designs, and can be worn the evening before and the morning after your honeymoon night.
Adjust your mindset by choosing a style that suits you and your partner. If lingerie is not your style, consider cute pajamas as a second, more comfortable option for sleeping. Leather, harnesses, and unexpected straps are your best friends when it comes to lingerie choices. Focus on finding daring sets or separates that ooze sex.
There is no rule that says “wedding night attire” must actually be apparel; birthday suits are totally acceptable on wedding nights. Popular wedding lingerie styles include matching bra and panty sets, robes, garter belts, babydolls, teddies, corsets, and bustiers. Personalize your look and consider your partner’s preferences when choosing your wedding night attire.

Biggest things learned from my wedding night are – breathe, communicate, and it’s okay to ask, “Can we switch gears?” or to slow down the motions, stop for now and pick that back up tomorrow, etc. Especially if you’ve been anxious or tense or finding things painful and uncomfortable. Any media you’ve seen with romance…. It’s not the standard to set for that moment. In your minds, you’ve both already built this up and probably created some expectations of what it’ll be like. Not to burst your bubble, but there’s a decent chance your night won’t be exactly what you had in mind – do what you can to accept that and just be okay with it. Regardless, it’s a special time that marks a new phase in your lives and relationship!
I love your heart in sharing this article. I’ve been married a long time now but one thing I would say is that foreplay is soo important to help a woman prepare bodily for sex. Don’t just jump into the intercourse part…touch each other and get aroused first, kiss etc . This is so important for women to have a more comfortable and satisfying sexual experience IMO and if it’s his first time…be prepared that it might be quick!!
This was a great article! A huge help for me when I was engaged is that my now-husband said “it’s okay if we wait a few days to have sex if that is most comfortable to you.” I felt so amazed and comforted by that because I had a lot of anxiety about it and I was worried that bringing sex into our relationship would cause my man to forget about my needs. He eased so much anxiety by saying that and we continued to talk about how we felt about starting to have sex, what we were looking forward to and worried about. One thing I would say for confidence, picking out some lingerie really made me feel so good! I tried it on beforehand and it honestly helped me to look forward to having my spouse in a new, special way. Also if you are open to having it on your wedding night, make sure your hair and makeup isn’t too hard to get off 🙂
I was a virgin when I was married years ago and I have to say I felt a ton of pressure and expectations and I made the mistake of not communicating because I didn’t know how to. The thing is, sex is the glue that binds relationships together and yet it can also become what feels like a burden. I think because of the sexualization of our culture I felt the pressures of needing to have a lot of sex and be sexy and please my husband. Unfortunately, this did not prevent him from having a porn addiction which I have had to make my peace with. The reality is, sexuality is a very nuanced and a difficult part of our humanity. A lot of shame and guilt is also woven into our psyches around it. My best advice is that sexuality is a natural, normal, healthy desire. Being attracted to other people happens. Being married doesn’t mean that other people suddenly disappear but we can also choose how we respond to ourselves (hopefully with a ton of love). Sexuality also opens the door to questions about our bodies, our worth, our beauty and desireability. The force of orgasm can bring up very powerful emotions including crying. This is normal. Normalizing sexuality includes seeing that its not some romantic end all be all, but a continued open conversation with our hearts, our bodies and our needs within the safe container of marriage and/or partnership.
I have come across the advice of showering first to help you relax on youtube and that advice would not have worked for me. I was very excited about my lingerie for my wedding night, but it turned out that I couldn’t put it on the first time. It is because I was very used to being fully clothed and modesty was a HUGE issue in my Christian fundy religion. I was fine with the actual event, but I was able to only relax by coming to the bed with street clothes on. The first time wasn’t particularly memorable, but I enjoyed it. It’s like the beginning of a new adventure/knowledge. It’s the end of naivety.
We were both virgins the night we got married. And we just had a good time with each other, because I think it’s more important just getting comfortable and feel familiar with each other instead of focusing on the act. Definite communication is a big factor. Agree with what you said about laughter we did a lot of that . We were married 5 days before as if you were in use the word consummated, But I wouldn’t change a thing. Everything was perfect.
I wanna talk about my mom and how I had to explain to her that women often bleed their first time. We think of parents who teach abstinence as not being very open, but I’d say my mom is relatively sex-positive. That said, she was an athlete all throughout school and matured rather young (menarche at age 10). So one afternoon we’re perusal Call the Midwife (excellent series, 10/10 would recommend) and when 2 of the nurses are discussing tampons being given to unmarried girls, my mom is like “what are they talking about? Why the controversy?” And because I’m chronically online & read a lot of books, I explain. I love that my mother birthed & raised 2 children without knowing that it’s considered the norm for sex to be painful the first time. Like…no one warned her and she didn’t need the warning because it didn’t happen.
No idea why this came up in my suggestions (I’m an old married lady), but I wanted to hear what advice you had. All great, sound, practical advice! I will add: buy a commercial intimate lubricant: gentle, so won’t irritate, and can prevent discomfort of unpleasant friction. Don’t use something random from around the house (e.g. Vaseline) as this can irritate and then increase discomfort or risk of UTI.
1. Talk about contraception BEFORE! If you want to do NFP you should start a few months before having sex. 2. Don’t feel pressured that your first time having sex does have to be your wedding night… You have plenty of time during honeymoon. Also you can focus a bit more, cool down, relax… If you waited so long – a few days more could be worth it 😉 3. Actually your first time having sex won’t be the best 😂 so no need to remember it precisely bc it will get waaaaayyy better over the years – at least that’s my experience! 4. Learn to talk about your experiences together. It’s so important to verbalise both your emotions and your physical sensations. That’s the only way to get over the awkwardness at the beginning and all the wrong expectations and pictures you might have in your head.
Hope you don’t mind a guy commenting. I’ve been waiting a long time; what’s one more day? Honestly I think that once I do find the right woman, the wedding night won’t matter nearly as much as the rest of our lives, despite my instinct being to hit the ground running as hard as I can. I’ve been to weddings for family members where I had to work all day and I was exhausted afterward, so I can just imagine what it must be like to be the couple getting married. Honestly after such an emotionally draining day and all that goes into it, I think I’d be beyond exhausted and happy to put sex off til later. The thing is that for a few years I’ve been worried about this, whether I’d be sending the message to my bride that I was disappointed in her or didn’t find her attractive! But from what I’m hearing from multiple sources is that if more men thought like me then maybe the pressure and expectations (obligation?) wouldn’t be heaped on what really should be a joyous occasion. Clifford & Joyce Penner have some wonderful books on sex, as does Sheila Gregoire, worth reading for all people out there, Christian or not.
Hey! Not a virgin, never been married. Currently abstinent/celibate. It’s actually a misconception that your first time has to be painful or will you will definitely bleed. I’m embarrassed to say I only learned this a few years ago.. 18 years after the fact. Some people will have blood due to the hymen stretching too fast and tearing but you don’t have to bleed. Your hymen (except in certain cases) doesn’t cover your full vaginal opening; otherwise menstrual blood wouldn’t be able to leave your body. You also can’t judge virginity based on the appearance of a hymen. If you go slow and start small with a finger and are properly lubricated there shouldn’t be pain. I know this could prove difficult for some partners, cause I’m talking slooooooww lol. Also the vagina expands when you’re aroused properly. I fewl like we’ve come too far for some of these myths around womens reproductive health to still be lingering lol. That is all! 😊
