The first recommendation is to dress at the same level as the couple, ensuring they are in the same attire. If the couple is in wedding dresses or tux/suits, the officiant should be in a nice dress or suit. For casual clothing, such as sundresses and khakis, the officiant should wear a modestly designed and colored dress. For church weddings, the officiant should wear a suit or dress pants with a button-down shirt and tie.
Before agreeing to perform the wedding ceremony, schedule an introductory meeting with the bride and groom. Discuss what is appropriate for that particular day and put your own twist on it. In Hawaiian weddings, the exchange of leis (garlands of flowers) symbolizes love and connection, and the blowing of the “pū” (conch shell) is another important custom.
A wedding officiant typically dresses professionally for the ceremony, but there are some rules to follow. For example, don’t wear purple clergy shirts unless you are a bishop, and don’t wear a stole unless you are ordained in the UMC. Diaconal ministers who received a diaconal stole at their consecrations should wear the right stole for their office.
A pastor plays a crucial role in the wedding ceremony, ensuring everything runs smoothly and according to plan. They may say a prayer, which is usually directed towards God, seeking His blessings and guidance for the couple. Some pastors wear a suit and tie, while others wear a black academic robe with or without a stole.
In conclusion, choosing the right wedding attire depends on the couple’s preferences and the venue.
📹 “Should A Christian Wear Jewelry?” with Pastor Doug Batchelor
Should A Christian Wear Jewelry? with Pastor Doug Batchelor This is our Friday Night Bible Question of the Week.
What is inappropriate to wear as a wedding guest?
Your everyday clothes. Even if the dress code allows casual attire, jeans, T-shirts, shorts, flip-flops, and sneakers are never appropriate for a wedding guest. Show respect for the bride and groom by dressing up. Sabatino says men should wear a jacket and tie even if the invitation says casual. “That’s honoring the occasion,” she says. At Avrumson’s wedding, a man wore a T-shirt under his suit in 90-degree heat. I wasn’t upset because of the weather. It’s more important that everyone has a good time. However, she doesn’t like too-casual bags. A big mistake: If you’re wearing a beautiful dress, don’t bring the same bag you go shopping with.
Show-off outfits. Don’t wear revealing clothes, says Sabatino. Crop tops, dresses with mesh, short skirts, plunging necklines, and form-fitting gowns are more appropriate for a night out than a wedding. A skimpy outfit will attract negative attention and take attention away from the bride.
Does the officiant wear the same as the groomsmen?
Coordinate with the wedding party. As a wedding party member, don’t wear the same outfit as the others. Sabatino says to ask the couple about their color scheme so your outfit fits in with the wedding party. If the bridesmaids are in pink silk dresses, choose a gown in a similar shade. Your goal is to blend in without being mistaken for a bridesmaid or groomsman.
Be professional. The ceremony is about the couple, so don’t make it about you. “The officiant is there to support, not steal the show,” Terranova says. They should dress well and feel good, but not distract from the couple. Choose something professional and appropriate. Avoid short hemlines, revealing cuts, and attention-grabbing pieces.
Watch out for certain colors. Avoid these colors when officiating a wedding. Unless there’s a dress code, don’t wear white, Terranova says, as that’s the bride’s color. Another color to avoid? Neon is out unless the wedding party is in electric tones. “A dark or neutral color is usually safe,” Stafford says.
What is acceptable to wear to a church wedding?
You won’t know what’s appropriate until you know the dress code. Check the wedding invitation for guest attire guidelines. For a casual church wedding, wear a short-sleeved sundress or a relaxed linen suit. For a more formal wedding, wear a long dress or suit. There’s a lot of flexibility within each dress code, but because church weddings call for modest attire, it’s best to pick something appropriate over something risque or ostentatious. As a wedding guest, you should not be the center of attention. The bride and groom are. Keep it simple. If you’re self-conscious about your clothes, simplicity is best. Knee-length dresses and pantsuits are simple and work with most dress codes. Avoid anything flashy or attention-grabbing. You might be fine at your cousin’s Art Institute of Chicago party, but a traditional church ceremony calls for something less extravagant.
Choose sophisticated accessories. Soften your look with sophistication. This means tailored looks, clean lines, and pieces you can wear again and again. If you love bright colors and sparkles, try a sequined clutch or a red crossbody bag. If you like to accessorize, try a multi-tiered pearl necklace or a stack of gold bangles with a simple navy outfit. You can always add your own style to your outfit, even if it’s a dress code.
Can I wear black to a church wedding?
The Bottom Line. You can wear black to a wedding, as long as it’s not against the dress code. Depending on where the couple is exchanging vows, what season it is, and what time the wedding starts, black may or may not be the best color. If black makes you feel good, wear it!
What do pastors usually wear?
Clerical clothing is non-liturgical clothing worn by clergy. It is not for use in the liturgy. Clergy wear clerical clothing in different ways. Sometimes it is worn under vestments, and sometimes it is the everyday clothing of a priest, minister, or other clergy member. In some cases, it can be like the habit of a monk or nun. Many Christian clergy wear a shirt with a clerical collar. But the most common use of clerical clothing is among Catholic, Anglican, Oriental Orthodox, and Eastern Orthodox clergy.
Catholicism In 1215, the Fourth Lateran Council made it mandatory for all Christian clergy to wear distinctive dress. The purpose was not to make the clergy more important. It was to make them stand out if anyone was seen on the street. The rules then were not the same as now, and they vary by place.
Collarino (Tab Collar): This is the most common shirt and collar for Roman-rite Catholic clergy. It looks like a regular dress shirt but has a black collar that can be fixed with a white cloth or soft plastic insert, leaving a small white square at the base of the throat. A collarless shirt with a strip of linen or plastic that, when worn over the shirt, creates a standing white collar that rings the neck. This collar is fastened with stays or buttons. These shirts and detachable collars were originally worn under a waistcoat, rabat, or cassock. Today, these shirts are usually black poly-cotton, but when worn under a waistcoat or rabat, they are usually white and made of a better cotton weave. Clerical waistcoat or rabat: Clerical waistcoats are the most traditional and formal item of clerical costume. They are black and made of wool. Clerical waistcoats usually have silk backing. They are worn over a shirt with a detachable collar to create a cassock-like appearance. They button all the way to the collar, unlike suits. The rabat is a late innovation that mirrors the clerical waistcoat, except it is backless.
What should a male celebrant wear?
Wedding Celebrant Outfits for Men: Suits A well-tailored suit in a classic color (navy or gray) is a safe bet for formal weddings. You can also go bold with a tartan or plaid fabric or a luxe velvet. What are the etiquette of pastors?
Honor Christ, not yourself. Be honest, not boastful; peaceful, not argumentative; patient, not quick-tempered; diligent, not lazy. Avoid conflicts of interest and seek counsel. Take care of yourself. Take care of your body, mind, emotions, and spirit. The Bible says your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. “In your teaching, be honest and speak well” (Titus 2:7–8). Speak the truth. Give credit where credit is due. Those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. (1 Corinthians 4:2)
In leadership. Be a good leader and encourage others to be good leaders. Use power and influence wisely. Encourage loyalty. Take care of the whole congregation. Keep promises. Respond to ministry requests and needs. “Whoever is dishonest with little will be dishonest with much” (Luke 16:10). Guard confidences. Tell someone in advance if you have to tell them something that could be illegal. Tell the truth, but don’t gossip. Tell the truth or remain silent: “A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret” (Proverbs 11:13). Be honest and prudent with resources. Don’t accept gifts that could affect your ministry. Use all gifts for their intended purpose. “If you can’t be trusted with worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?” (Luke 16:11).
What color should a male officiant wear?
Ask the couple what they think. Some couples have strong preferences about what the officiant wears. Ask about this early on in the planning process. The couple can also ask their wedding planner, designer, or stylist for advice about what will look best with the venue and overall design. Black, white, or a neutral color are often the safest bet if the couple is unsure.
What colors do pastors wear?
A red shirt is worn by bishops. Bishops in Catholic, Methodist, and other denominations usually wear red shirts with white collars. Cardinals wear maroon because they’re higher in the church than bishops. Purple is also used to show that someone is a bishop or senior bishop. This color shows that the clergy holds a specific position in the church. Sometimes, one bishop may wear purple to show they are senior to another bishop. Purple is also used for services of repentance. Clergy often wear white shirts at formal ceremonies like weddings, funerals, baptisms, or religious holidays. White shirts are worn under cloaks or robes during ceremonies, but not in public. A clergy shirt of this color is also worn with different color priest collars.
What is the dress code for a preacher?
It depends on the church. Some churches require liturgical dress. Some pastors who don’t wear robes still wear suits and ties.
What should an officiant wear to a wedding?
What should the officiant wear? Ask the couple if you should wear a dress, jumpsuit, suit, tux, or something else. Ask if there are any length requirements or if they want specific areas covered.
Officiating a wedding means meeting with the couple, writing the ceremony, rehearsing, and doing a great job on the big day. What you wear is important. Your outfit sets the tone for the ceremony, shows your professionalism, and honors the occasion. Below are ideas for officiant outfits, from traditional to casual.
Know the wedding style and theme. Know the wedding style and theme before choosing your outfit. Your outfit should match the wedding style and theme. This creates a cohesive visual experience.
Communication is key. Working with the couple. It’s important to talk with the couple about officiant attire. Your presence will be captured in some of the most important photos of their lives. Help them choose by giving them options and asking for their preferences.
📹 Finally!! Pastor Kumuyi Settles Controversies On Women Dressing
The General Overseer of Deeper Life Church, Pastor Kumuyi has made some important remarks on women dressing in Deeper …
I’ve been doing research on this topic, and I’ve found that when it comes to jewelry it comes down to personal conviction. The reason I say this is because every time I’ve read in the bible about jewelry with negative connotations its because people have made the jewelry into an idol. Although I personally don’t feel comfortable piercing my ears I think rings, necklaces and bracelets aren’t much different from expensive designer clothes, an expensive house, an expensive car, nice watches, nice shoes, and loads of makeup. I think that anything that is excessive that comes between you and your personal connection with God becomes an idol. However, when it comes to jewelry I don’t think the bible swears against it. There are instances when jewelry is referenced positively (Ezekiel 16), or when Abraham gifts Rebecca with jewelry as was the custom. In Adventist fundamental principles I know many do preach against jewelry, and my church included. For a while I thought: “man because it’s hard to be rich and enter the kingdom of God, the best route is to be poor and dress in rags.” Now I think that’s ridiculous. So many times in the old testament God promises wealth and power to those who obey his commandment, as long as they put him before their materials. And the same goes with jewelry. Even money is the route to all evil, but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna start boycotting dollar bills. A lot of Adventists tell me that we don’t need jewelry and so its a sin; but it makes no sense when I see them replace that jewelry with cars, watches, and clothes: all things you use to adorn yourself.
When I first was born again I attended a church that taught that woman shouldn’t wear jewelry. I felt convicted and went home a threw all my jewelry away because i wanted to be pleasing to the Lord. Well, the Holy Spirit taught me a valuable lesson… But, it took me a few years to get it! I wasnt being convicted by the Holy Spirit to not wear jewelry. It was peer pressure that I was experiencing. So now…I live and walk my life by the Holy Spirit’s conviction. If I don’t feel his conviction about something…I can do what I feel with assurance that I am in his will. God bless
Thank you Pastor Bachelor. May the Lord continue to bless you as you share his word with boldness and humility. This jewelry thing has infiltrated our SDA churches like wildfire. Most leaders/preachers have neglected truth because of they want to share popular messages. There is a horrible spirit of confusion among us. Praying for a spirit of obedience daily.
The wearing of the jewellery is not the sin, it’s what it can lead you to do. Same as everything in this world God gifts you with. What about expensive clothes, shoes, watches, cars, houses, bags etc. Joseph was given a ring, Daniel was given a chain. Heaven itself is full of gold and jewelleries. Jesus wears a golden crown. God’s tabernacles the Bible were decorated with gold. Before you decide what to do, please read the following scriptures Ex 3:22, Ex 13:35, Ex 11:2, Ezk 16:11, Ezk28-17. Gen 24:20-30, Ex 35:4-15 and many more scriptures about jewellery.
I wear jewelry and I have never been convicted in my spirit to put it away, although there are several things the Holy Spirit has convicted me about. I really like jewelry, but I know not to make an idol of it. I remember having this beautiful Michael Kors watch. I mean, it was designed so beautifully that I would look at it on my wrist all of the time, all day long. I had that watch maybe three days and then I lost it. The way I lost it didn’t make sense and it was so obvious that the LORD took it from me. There was only one other watch like it when I bought it and I went back to the store to buy it and it was gone. I could not even get angry because I knew why GOD allowed me to lose it….lesson learned. All glory to Him!🙏🏽🙌🏽
I got rid all my jewellery after perusal this article. Thank you pastor our eyes are being opened. For years I have been saved but many things are being revealed to me now through your teachings, e.g. Sunday worship. I even made a decision to look for a Sabbath church. May you teach about birth control…I heard from a colleague that it’s not the will of God that we use contraceptives and condoms. Please enlighten me.
Wow… I literally just pierced my ears a few months ago! right before my 23rd birthday. I’ve always loved jewellery…and then this sermon popped up.. And I had been avoiding this sermon for a while but it kept popping up lol…I kept convincing myself it isn’t such a big deal, like can he (God) really stop me from entering heaven because of earrings?? but I have just learnt its a big deal, simply because I value jewellery so much that I even began to feel slightly “incomplete” without it. I guess God wants me to realise I do not need to spend so much time and money worrying about adorning or making my outward appearance look beautiful..and to be confident that I’m wonderfully made. And to focus on building my character for heaven. Also because I’d love to be an evangelist some day, he probably wants me to set a good example lol…
Ezekiel 16:11-14. You forgot to mention about God adorning Israel with gold/silver, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, jewels, and fine linen. Even God gave jewelry to His people. And if God did it then there’s nothing wrong with it. Just because people used it for bad purposes doesn’t mean it is forbidden.
I have struggled with this topic off and on over the years. This is my conclusion. God knows our hearts. Man does not. He also knows if we have put things ie: idols before him. For myself, I have always been modest, I don’t spend a lot of money if any at all on adorning myself. I got married later in life, and come from many generations of marriages that have stood the test of time. No divorces at all. So wearing a wedding ring was very much a symbol of the vows I took, and my dedication to my husband thru thick or thin, in sickness and in health. I think God knows my heart, and will not fault me on this.
Pastor preach the word of the Lord. I find people who are offended by the word are those who doing contrary to the word of the LORD. I was once offended myself on this very topic, but my desires are heavenly things, and all those who desire the KINGDOM of God HAVE to PUT ALL IDOLS AWAY! Dear Jehovah GOD I pray for those who are struggling with any idols, give them strength to PUT THEM AWAY. Amen
People this is a non Essential Topic that is between the person and The Holy Spirit. This isn’t a salvation issue. It’s the work of the Holy Spirit and sanctification process. IF jewelry becomes an idol then do away with it and all others. If it is a gift from God through a person from love and worn with love then exercise the gift of freedom.
A tale of losing the ring: My husband and I wear unobtrusive wedding bands. We are 3rd gen SDAs and none in the respective conservative churches we belong to wear rings. We are active in the church and serve leadership roles. So u could say we are going against the grain. We are plain in our clothing and shoes (I wear flats, no watches, etc)…some of the clothes I wear I got 20 yrs ago, but most are 2ndhand or someone bought for me…so all these details are to show that we do not take pride in our appearance. Our bands cost around $200 combined. A year after our wedding, we went island hopping. There were more than 10 islands that we went to that day. As we sat for dinner, my husband noticed that his ring was missing. Upon reviewing our photos we narrowed down the area where he likely lost it. It was not on an island…rather a lagoon accessible by a small hole under the limestone cliffs. My husband contacted the company who took us island hopping. They agreed but told us they should leave the main island by 5am and must come back around 7am so they could meet the tourists booked that day. Just a small window of time to find a small ring in the ocean. The boatmen were doubtful about our request: other swimmers might have come after us and seen it, or the movement of the sand covered it, or it could have fallen in between the corals. Also, it being white gold was easy to blend in the white sands of the area. I told the Lord, “Lord, it’s just a ring. It’s a small thing to ask from a great God.
Amen Pastor Doug,I was born an Adventist & when i was a late teen i left the church & have only in the last 6mths or so returned,i’m now 48yrs old..The Lord Is So Merciful..but i’ve tattoos,i was trying to justify that it was okay because of my Polynesian culture but now i’ve a great regret about getting it done, even though my father tried to stop me i went on getting more.I’ve looked into the cost of removing them but i’m a man of little savings & it’s so expensive..BUT if i can save enough i feel that i will go ahead & start removing them, even though i believe there’ll be many folks in Heaven who had tattoos it still grieves me that i have them..Love your ministry Pastor,God Bless You.
I’ve never studied the teaching of SDA. When I first listened to some articles I understood everything believed all of it, except never studied the sabbath. Wow all I had to do was look at a calendar. Sure enough, Day 1 is Sunday. My eyes really popped out thinking about something so obvious yet so ignorant about it. I will be studying Doug & the many others teaching to reach my own conclusion. I have a good feeling in my spirit. The original seed of my faith was planted by my grandma 50 years ago. I’m so thankful to God for keeping me close even though I’ve strayed so many times. I pray those days are never more. Thanks to Doug, Mark Fox & other Friends teaching the Word in Christ.
I am very happy and I thank the Lord for you Pastor Doug Bachelor for explaining this subject correct all my life I never wear jury’s cause my church Pastor explain everything when do BIBLE study very long time ago when I was 15 years old I baptised fully aware and understand all the BIBLES teaching so thank you so very much may God continue his protection and his blessing on you as you continue ministry for him
Amen and Amen 🙌🙌🙌so right. We need not to wear any jewelry, make and garments that petaineth to men’s garnents. You hit the nail on the head. No tattoos, thank you Lord Jesus Christ for this truth. I changed my whole outward image 25 years ago by being convicted by the Holy Spirit and this is nothing but The TRUTH, GOD IS SOVEREIGN, HE IS TRUE AND HE IS HOLY 🙌🙌🙌🙌
I was about to comment that jewelry is an adornment that can distinguish between feminine and masculine. But when you said it was a distraction I stopped in my tracks. You speak truth unlike many Protestants I have come across. I am considering removing all 10 of my earrings bc I am getting married but want to live as closely to consecrated life as I can in the meantime and I know nuns do not wear jewelry. This has been so insightful thank you💗
But God Himself said this, Ezekiel16:10- “I clothed you with an embroidered dress and put sandals of fine leather on you. I dressed you in fine linen and covered you with costly garments. I adorned you with jewelry: I put bracelets on your arms and a necklace around your neck, and I put a ring on your nose, earrings on your ears and a beautiful crown on your head. So you were adorned with gold and silver; your clothes were of fine linen and costly fabric and embroidered cloth. Your food was honey, olive oil and the finest flour. You became very beautiful and rose to be a queen. And your fame spread among the nations on account of your beauty, because the splendor I had given you made your beauty perfect, declares the Sovereign Lord.” Ezekiel 16:10-14 NIV
Well being a babe in Christ … when I first came to the Lord …. I heard this teaching And I believed it … until one day I just ask the Lord for myself, not man… didn’t think about it anymore…. maybe a month or two later, I have this dream where I was standing in front of a television and there was a choir singing powerfully… I felt the power of God through the television, what happened next was…. it was a huge choir of ladies singing, and The Lord panned in on one of of the ladies who had on gold earrings… and then the dream cut off….. So I believe I got my answer….. they did not affect the choir from singing the anointing!! It was all on one accord!!!! God knows all!!!
The point of this message is simple. We are not defined by what we wear/ own. We are all on a personal journey towards the lord, wearing some jewellery doesn’t mean we won’t be allowed into heaven. However if we start to put what we wear/ own above the lord that is not what he wants. This is a wonderful message for the consumer based world we live in. Do what is right for you, and pray if you feel that what you are doing isn’t what you should be. God bless you all 💕🖤
In my understanding, I believe it’s a matter of your heart towards these things. The verse in 1 Peter speaks also about putting on of apparel and the braiding of hair in addition to wearing of gold. So, are we not to wear clothes? Of course not, our dressing should be modest. Therefore, if my heart is set on having 6000 pairs of shoes and a new outfit for every day of the year then clearly something is wrong and my heart is set on acquiring things. So, I do not believe a doctrine should be made on not wearing jewelry entirely and ignore the other items mentioned in the verse. We cannot be selective. If wearing excessive jewelry becomes a weight in your walk with God then lay it aside. The Holy Spirit will guide you in all truth.
thank you so much, for speaking truth on this topic, I am young I have not and will not pierce my nose or ears or anywhere, or get a tattoo, or were jewelry including a wedding band. instead I put on humility, and fruits of the spirit, LOVE joy peace longsuffering gentleness goodness meekness temperance and faith, and virtues of Christ, including loving my enemies with the help of the Holy Ghost. and besides I will have much better gold and precious metals or stones that don’t rust or get dull in heaven. In HIS glorious kingdom. God is love
It is also interesting to note one of the judgments concerning Hebrew servants and having a pierced ear: KJV Exodus 21:5-6 “And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free: Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever.”
I totally agree with you. Since i was born again i feel shy to wear my jewelry and find it too shiny. Am afraid to offend my others Christians fellows. Also since i knew that wedding rings come from pagan origin, i stopped wearing it. Always wonderful to know the truth from the bible. God bless you all
My wife, as a young pretty nurse, always wore her wedding ring. She did this because she worked in a non religious hospital. She was getting hit on quite a bit and wearing her wedding ring sent a message that she was not available. Wearing the ring helped a lot. After about are 40, she didn’t need the ring anymore. I never wore a wedding ring because I worked on heavy equipment and wearing a ring could cause injury.
Let us be careful within ourselves. I am reading people saying it’s your heart, follow your heart. We need to be careful Jeremiah 17:9 says The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? So we need to be careful only God knows our hearts not us. Thank you Pastor Doug for your message. God found me while I was listening to your sermons. May God bless you and continue to use. He who has ears let him hear.
There are verses in the bible where jewelry is not a problem, for instance gen 24:22. what or who is in our heart i believe is the issue, the intention of material things, anything can be a pride not only jewelry, it can be cars, houses,… in heaven we are going to wear a crown wirh luxurious stones
This message confirms so much. I have recently seeking Yahweh and asking Him to help me live in a manner that pleases Him. And I have noticed that the desire for fashion and jewelry dried up!…..I no longer have that obsession to buy clothes and jewelry as I already spent sooo much in the past doing so. I now don’t wear jewelry (even I am surprised at myself!) and only wear not too many but modest clothes too. Thanks be to the Most High! About the wedding ring, apparently it has pagan origins. do some research.
Amen thank you Pastor, I have been struggling to explain to persons biblically why I do not wear jewelry and when I asked my church Pastor he could point me to any scripture. This was very informative and now I can just share this article when asked why I do not wear jewelry. Would make up fall in this as well?
I’m a new Adventist and have to say that this one fundamental belief has always hung me up. It’s one of the main reasons it took so long for me to make the decision to become an Adventist. It is the one thing that I’m not sure I agree with the Adventist Church on. I do not see the harm in my wearing a necklace or wedding rings. If you’re talking about folks spending money on jewelry etc it should be just like anything else in our lives, measured with temperance. We all know that too much of anything is not a good thing, except for Jesus. To wear excessive jewelry or makeup and fancy, expensive clothing or to focus too much on one’s appearance is never a healthy, wholesome endeavor. I disagree with this belief of the SDA Church and think it’s unnecessary and legalistic. It really should be between the individual and God whether a person wears jewelry, rather than a church saying that members in good standing cannot wear jewelry. My husband and I do not have much money and have just gotten to a place that we can pay our bills. We just began faithfully tithing in the last year-and-a-half and we do not spend a bunch of money on jewelry or anything like that, but I do wear my wedding rings and occasionally he does buy me a beautiful necklace or earrings and I enjoy wearing them. But they don’t cost much, maybe $10 and I’m satisfied with something pretty and inexpensive. It has nothing to do with my self-esteem, I just enjoy looking nice as I’m sure most ladies enjoy looking their best when they go on a date with their husband, or present themselves to the Lord at church.
NO tattoos, NO jewelry, NO wigs and extentions, NO foreign hair colors, NO men’s clothes on women, NO SKINNY JEANS -MEN!!! ALL of the above is for the men also. MODESTY FOR MEN & WOMEN! We are to be Holy like Jesus, wow! God help us, so much in the world that sometimes looks and sounds appealing, but Christians are to look, act, talk different ~ NOT OF THIS WORLD (DIFFERENT ) (I am still wearing my wedding ring. …. :(, when God the Father sends the Holy Spirit to let me know that I don’t need to wear my wedding ring, then I will take it off. Anything with demonic symbols, skulls etc. BURN it!!! Don’t “give” it away.
In the past, while I was married, I had a job that kept me from wearing my wedding rings as a safety measure. I was always very upfront about my marital status, but some men would still complain that the lack of a ring was “false advertising”. Wearing a wedding ring will not keep you from sinning if you are so inclined.
In my opinion, wearing wedding bands depends on the culture you are a part of. Some cultures think that you’re cheating or you’re still a bachelor/bachelorette if you don’t wear one which means anyone could still court you. But if your culture doesn’t really have those kind of “I don’t see a ring on it” then, just don’t wear one if it really has no purpose.
In the story of the golden calf, what I gather is that jewelry worn wasn’t sinful. They became problematic when they were taken off and smelted… I know not one scripture that condemns jewelry. Like many things in the SDA church and Christianity as a whole, jewelry too needs to be applied in moderation. The subject in contention isn’t the jewelry but the motive behind their wearing.
Thank you so much for your straigtforward sermon. These days I am surprised to see that many Sda women even pastors and their wives are wearing jewelry throughout the world. We, as remnants who are to have the last great controversy, don’t need to do those kind of trivial worldly things. We should follow Jesus in every way of life.
“But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 KJV The Bible is not a book of a bunch of do’s and don’t’s for a Christian to follow!! The Bible is the living Word of God that teaches us as Christians how to have a relationship with God our Father through Jesus Christ His Son. If you read the Bible and think it’s a list of Do’s and Don’t’s then you are perceiving it inaccurately. The Holy Spirit has moved on the inside of man. The “law” of God now written on man’s heart. We now look inwardly to the Spirit of God within to lead us, direct us, and to instruct us in the way that we should go. It is a matter of heart that is the issue. Jesus never taught against having riches, or else Proverbs would have to rewritten where it says a wise man leaves an inheritance unto his children’s children!! And other scriptures that speak on this wise!! What Jesus taught against was “trusting in riches instead of God”!! It’s a matter of heart!! If wearing jewelry is a idol in your life, and what I mean by idol is, if you wear jewelry to satisfy a insecurity within yourself, that jewelry is an idol and you should not wear it!! God should satisfy and heal you of any insecurities that you may have about yourself, not people, places or things!! But if you wear jewelry let’s say simply because you like a pair of earrings, or a watch to tell time, or a necklace to accentuate an outfit, etc.
This is what the Lord says: Ezekiel 16: 10 I clothed thee also with broidered work, and shod thee with badgers’ skin, and I girded thee about with fine linen, and I covered thee with silk. 11 I decked thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain on thy neck. 12 And I put a jewel on thy forehead, and earrings in thine ears, and a beautiful crown upon thine head. 13 Thus wast thou decked with gold and silver; and thy raiment was of fine linen, and silk, and broidered work; thou didst eat fine flour, and honey, and oil: and thou wast exceeding beautiful, and thou didst prosper into a kingdom. 14 And thy renown went forth among the heathen for thy beauty: for it was perfect through my comeliness, which I had put upon thee, saith the Lord God. ———— ♦️& Dressing Modestly (the principles applies to “MEN,” also): in 1 Timothy 2:9-10 & 1 Peter 3:3-5
Very interesting take…….”Then I bathed you in water, washed the blood off you, and anointed you with fragrant oil. 10 I dressed you in embroidered…. clothing and put fine leather sandals on your feet. I wrapped you with fine linen and covered you with silk. 11 I adorned you with jewelry. I put bracelets on your hands and a necklace around your neck. 12 I put a ring in your nose, earrings on your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head. 13 You were adorned with gold and silver, while your clothing was of fine linen, silk, and embroidery”….Ezekiel 16…someone explain this to me.
This is an interesting question. There’s really nothing in the 613 laws of the Torah that say a person should not wear Jewelry. I don’t wear jewelry but I feel that is because of a natural progression of the Holy Spirit transforming my inward character. I would rather persons see my intelligence and the depth of my character than come across as superficial or flighty. However I think forcing non-jewelry wearing on a person who has not not been similarly convicted is not necessary. Paul mentions in Galatians the importance of the genuine transformation by the Holy Spirit that changes our behaviors versus some traditional Jews who were trying to have gentiles obey all the Jewish laws before they could receive the Gospel, and this is of course backward. It is the Holy Spirit living within us that makes us, through love, desire to obey God’s commands. I’ve met persons who don’t wear jewelry but have awful characters – easily angered, impatient, ungenerous, and so I know that humility in appearance does not necessarily mean humility in character.
First of all I don’t own any jewelry or expensive golds but as what the pastor is pointing out about insecurity, that’s a shallow reason, I was never insecure to others rather I’m happy for them, when Paul mentioned that in his letters, he was referring to priority in life rather than wearing or not a jewelry…
Nicely said Nessa! I totally agree! In Genesis 35 I was just reading Jacob told the ppl to throw out their idolized earrings!!! I’m learning now it depends on your mindset .. are you wearing makeup seductively to lure in men ?? Are you wearing jewelry to be flashy so people can think you’re rich or have it all ?? I believe God does not want us to take our focus from Him and some of these things he doesn’t want you to do or wear Bc maybe you’re doing it or wearing it for a bad reason ???
Plain and simple .. Glory to God for Pastor s like you that preach the word of God .. Without wanting fame or money or followers .. I truely agree with the word of God.. I gave my life to Christ as a teenager and I remember my uncle that didnt know nothing about Jesus or his Father,my uncle would give me jewelry for Christmas birthdays he own a jewelry business, every time I tried to ware jewelry i would loose it i would feel something wasnt right in my spirit as I kept growing in the Lord I knew God did not want me to be like everybody else jewelry had no power but I knew God had all power is just a waste of money to ware something that looks good but has no power to bring a life a soul to Christ so why buy it or ware it.. But obeying the Lord gives us everything we need to have eternal life.. Nothing in this world satisfied me until I stared carrying the cross and I follow Jesus.. God bless
Hello everyone! I viewed this article and really loved it, as I am someone who wears a cross necklace, earrings, and rings. I as well have multiple tattoos (all resembling Biblical standpoints and truths, such as a dove, Jesus’s hand reaching for Peter’s, etc.). None of my jewelry is expensive, in fact most of it is found at thrift stores lol! Though I am posting to ask for anyone out there who may have a testimony about how they stopped wearing jewelry, and if it was truly led by the Holy Spirit. I grew up in a christian home, my dad being a very strong pastor, but i am realizing now that I am an adult and have been appointed to lead ministry myself, that there are so many things I disregarded in the Bible, or made excuses for going against “verses that were 100% contextual” (such as the tattoo one). I am trying to learn more, and am praying about these things and as to whether or not i really should take away jewelry and stop with the tattoos (would as well appreciate the prayer, thank you!) Thank you so much if you read this! 🙂
Im a young adult, Christian 19 and i wear cheap stuff. I wear a beated bracelet, two sterling silver rings and one earing that is also sterling silver. I love my jewelry, ive had them for years, they were gifts But I wanted to see if it was okay to keep them. Thank you for your article. I’ll keep them, just not wear them❤
I sure do love you, Doug. Thank you for such candid, dedicated, service in truth, disregarding your own popularity or “self”. We all can be inspired by your faith and subjugation to Biblical truth and God’s holy will, to surrender our tradition, and egocentric standards or customs, in order that we value that which God holds sacred. Praise Him for His manservant and your ministry, Amen!
I follow the Holly Words of Yeshua and I belong to Him and only Him! I don’t follow the words that come out from any man or woman from this earth!!!!!!🤔 A Greek Orthodox priest said many years ago, I was there at the time in the Greek Orthodox church and the priest said: ONLY THE GREEK ORTHODOX GO TO HEAVEN! Yeshua came on this earth and made everything New, I follow the new testament Its good to know about the old testament, but its the teachings of Yeshua that matters! Its not what we put in our mouths that dirty the soul, but what comes out of it, that dirties the soul, (I despise gossip and arrogance) we go to the father through Yeshua! Clothing and jewllery, as long is not worn with pride, whats next? How to walk and eat etc? PS: I grew up in the Asian Minor Orthodox church and what is stuck in my mind is this: Ayapate allilous, love one another, Amen!🤗
As someone who was raised an SDA I was taught that my fitness and title to heaven were linked to the non-wearing of jewelry. This was corroborated by readings from Ellen G. White, the Church’s supposed verbally inspired prophetess. Meticulous Biblical research reveals that there is no nexus between the wearing of jewelry and one’s salvation. There is absolutely no Biblical teaching that supports this misrepresentation. As a matter of fact, Ellen G. White herself, was a well-known wearer of the heaviest of gold chains, as well as her grand-daughter Ella. I am amazed that in this 21st century this fallacy is still being spewed from the mouth of ministers who ought to know the truth. A Christian is therefore very free to wear jewelry as he/she is well pleased. As in everything else in life, moderation is the key. This topic is a non-issue and should have been relegated to the dustbins of SDA History aeons ago. God bless us all as the truth sets us free.
In these times I would consider the extravagance of technical “jewelry” as “the Gold” of our times, like I-pads, cell-phones and so on…people always update to newest technology, even though the radiation is hurting them and others, especially children. Who is willing to leave that behind for Christs sake and for the love of our brothers and sister who get hurt by the radiation from phones and towers???? I do not know of any church, where there is a congregation WITHOUT any WIFI and any cell phone in peoples pockets during a service…even Amish people use cell phones these days……… just something to consider…….love above all!
1 Tim. was alluding to modesty. Where jewellery can cause one to be proud or become idolatrous. It’s the heart behind wearing the jewellery. It did not state/implying that wearing jewellery is a sin. 1 Pet. 3: 3a states ‘do not let your adornment be merely outward’. Which is speaking where one’s focus lies. The message should be that Christians should to seek the council of God and not man. MY PERSONAL belief is that Christians should stay away from most if not all jewellery, not because it’s a sin (that’s not biblical). But not to practice idolatry, and that many of these jewellery company are demonic, there designs are given to them by the kingdom of darkness. Those who wear them, don’t know the symbols, spiritual attachments and the altars they are tied to. Ignorantly they support demonic businesses. It’s not only jewellery but alot of things we consume. Ultimately God wants our heart freely and want us to be humble.
Pastor Doug Bachelor is a good teacher of the word of God. I believe this question about wearing jewelry or not is one of motive and conviction. Jewelry in of itself is neither good or bad, just like money. It’s the love of it (idol) that makes it bad. The (Motive) of the Christian’s heart should be the determined factor if they should wear jewelry or not. Case and point, if we’re wearing it to draw attention to ourselves to impress others, that’s the wrong motive. If we’re wearing it because we believe we need to wear it to feel approved by others and to feel better about ourselves (our Worth comes from GOD!) Not jewelry or clothes were wearing. If a (Man and a Woman) who’s married! Believe that wearing a wedding ring is an outward expression of their love for each other by letting the world know that they’re married, there’s nothing wrong with them wearing their rings. If a believer in Christ wears jewelry because they like to, not love or idolize it. But wear it modestly, not to offend or cause others to feel less than. I believe these are good motives that God would be pleased with. I hope this blesses someone 😊
Critics may say, “Well, those are just parables.” But His parables reflected real life and holy biblical practices. If Jesus considered those practices bad, He could easily have said: “By the way, the jewelry that I praised in my parables is actually evil; stop wearing it.” He never said such a thing because it is not evil.
I think that making ” not wearing jewelry” a doctrine, as something you HAVE to do, is misleading. This verse just tells us to be modest and to not seek being praised by our looks, but to reflect Jesus with what’s in our hearts. Remember when Jesus told their decuples this?: “The food you put into your mouth doesn’t make you unclean and unfit to worship God. The bad words that come out of your mouth are what make you unclean.”” Matthew 15:11 CEV “But the words that come out of your mouth come from your heart. And they are what make you unfit to worship God.” Matthew 15:18 CEV For me is not what you put in your body or how you dress what makes you unclean, but what comes from your heart, and the reasons why you choose to dress like that. The verse about the modesty is just a guide for us to be modest and not to seek attention, but in any way is to make it into a doctrine, and being focusing on it like if your salvation depends on it. We know the sin comes from the heart. Being modest is not all about the appearance.
I am not an Adventist, but have had tremendous respect for Doug’s scholarship. I do however I think that he has mishandled these passages, since the context of both passages do not deal with the jewelry issue. On casual observation, Pastor Doug is wearing a watch in this article. Does this not also classify as jewelry? Just asking…..
The wedding ring is there for a very specific purpose, just as the watch(to tell the time). It tell a potential mate not to pursue because you are already taken without you have specifically tell them. I agree with the ear ring and other body jewelry part because there is not significant reason other than beauty to wear them plus there are strong biblical text about those. But not for the wedding band.
On the contrary I hit the sub button. A couple of years before I came to Christ I noticed things I once loved or didn’t have a problem doing I could not tolerate anymore. Let me rephrase…. Christ came to me. I was like Jonah for years. But yes, stopped perusal tv, stopped wearing jewelry, make-up, changed the clothes I wore, foods I ate and the most odd…. I refuse no matter who it is, i refuse to go to a funeral. Later I learned some of the things were either Nazarene or Jewish. When I noticed it, It gave a whole new fresh perspective to “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me”
So wear gold and do yo0.u hair but don’ Don’t come to church just to look good and get peoples eye. Look good but let your light shine 1st and be Godly. Don’t dress good only but be good or Godly. And will wear earrings but I wear the clip earrings and have no holes in my ears and do my hair and I wear nice clothes. God looks at the heart as well. I don’t over do or show skin but I don’t pick the plainest dress at the shop or wear heels. I’m saved but not a an old school mom either. I don’t think God minds if I have nice things and look good. It depends on whats in your heart.
I have a hard time with the “would Jesus do this” argument. Mostly because He lived in a different time. Can you picture Jesus driving a car? I can’t. Does that mean I shouldn’t drive a car? I can’t picture Jesus using a laptop either. Does that mean I should only use snail mail? Well, it seems strange to me to imagine Jesus walking down to His driveway to His mailbox. You get the point.
Sad thing is why when our sda members leave the church that’s the first thing they put on??so does that mean that was the intentions all the time..bottom line is God is coming back for us an this jewelry wouldn’t be a difference anyhow..we all jus wanna hear”well done good and faithful servants enter in…”
I’ve never won jewelry my whole life. I don’t like jewelry. I had ear stud when I was a teenager but I removed it. However I do braid hair only because I need to keep it tidy. I do have some expensive clothes but that’s only because they last me longer and I use them for work and I don’t have to constantly buy clothes as the expensive ones last longer. I’ve had some for almost 10 years and they look almost new. And I do not have a lot on f clothes. I have one pair of work shoe. When it wears out, I’ll buy the next one. One casual slippers and one runners. Thankyou Lord.
AMEN pastor. I think this one falls under the category… “well… if you have to ask…” then the answer is obvious. when I was about 14, a little cousin of mine used to come & visit. we had cows with an electric fence holding them in. my cousin would take a blade of grass & ‘edge’ his way closer & closer to the wire til the fence would ‘bite’. he would shake all over… giggle, then do it again. people are like that in many aspects today. they want to see HOW CLOSE to sin they can get without getting “BIT”. and while they’re busy doing this… the light of CHRIST is in the complete opposite direction. another example: one sabbath morning, summer, 1978 at the fletcher SDA church in NC, the sabbath school teacher was teaching a class on sabbath keeping. one child… who was NOTORIOUS for mischief says “Mrs. _____, isn’t it ok to go swimming on the sabbath?” I don’t think so, she replied. “but teacher… it’s ok to go on sabbath hikes?” yes. and if I stop to rest and dip my feet in the stream at the water’s edge… what’s the difference?” to which she replies “you are then doomed before you wake up every day”. WHAT?! he says… “yes. because your obvious intention is to see how close you can get to sin without sinning. your focus is NOT on Jesus with that kind of attitude. it’s on YOURSELF and YOUR PLEASURE.”
I think when you take away choices from people that you infact move into territories of religion like Islam where the many rules do not allow the person to choose rightly from the heart. Also, its what comes out of the heart that is the true man not what you put on. I personally don’t wear much jewellery (wedding ring watch earrings) on most days because its more a bother to me to wear lots of it. But, I think people have to be allowed to mature spiritually without this level of legalism.
Doug, when the scripture says “Let it not be” could it be saying that we not justify ourselves from the outward appearance but planning the emphasis on the heart as apposed to what man can see on the outside. Is it possible the Arthur is is focussing on the heart and not so much on the manner we adorn ourselves? What do you think?
I am so grateful that I was never drawn to wearing jewelry. It just never appealed to me. I always felt that it was just a waste of money. I had a friend who thought she didn’t have enough rings, on her hands. She had a ring for almost every finger! It never changed my friendships, or family attitudes. They just accepted it as my choice. I never berated anyone who chose to wear jewelry, and had quite a few friends. We got along just fine. As was noted, in another comment, it was a matter of choice. When I became a Christian, I realized, as Pastor Doug is pointing out, God does have something say about it, and I choose to follow His leading in this issue.
I am a Pentecostal man, specifically holiness/apostolic. These churches always preach against jewelry, yet most don’t do a good job of going in-depth with their teaching. I understand the jewelry thing, but there are other issues that I don’t understand (i.e. men having facial hair.) Funny enough, many of these churches will preach against jewelry, but will allow the women to practically be in beauty competitions with each other; beehives and fancy dress and such. The appearance may be different, but the root sin is still there: pride. Holiness is not something that we can attain on our own; we can’t earn our way to heaven. GOD is the one who adorns His people with holiness! I am all for the holiness standard of dress, but if you’re doing it to look better rather than trying to please God, you’re doing it for the wrong reasons!
You left out the part about braided hair: historically. only wealthy women wore braided hair as it needed a second person to braid. whether or not wearing costume jewelry is Christlike is a trite, vapid non salvific topic: God loves beauty: in his allegorical story of faithless Israel in Ezekial he adorns his loved female children with jewelry Ez. 16:11. Earrings, gold and silver bracelets verse 12. Of course tattoos and cutting and piercing are out: a 5$ aesthetic necklace gonna ruin modesty????
This is so funny lol so I should stop braiding my hair, any thing in excess in a sin. I believe that Paul is saying true beauty is seen through Godly character…. please note Ezekiel 16:1The word of the LORD came to me:16:2″Son of man, confront Jerusalem with her detestable practices16:3and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says to Jerusalem: Your ancestry and birth were in the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.16:4On the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to make you clean, nor were you rubbed with salt or wrapped in cloths.16:5No one looked on you with pity or had compassion enough to do any of these things for you. Rather, you were thrown out into the open field, for on the day you were born you were despised.16:6″‘Then I passed by and saw you kicking about in your blood, and as you lay there in your blood I said to you, “Live!”16:7I made you grow like a plant of the field. You grew up and developed and became the most beautiful of jewels. Your breasts were formed and your hair grew, you who were naked and bare.16:8″‘Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness. I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Sovereign LORD, and you became mine.16:9″‘I bathed you with water and washed the blood from you and put ointments on you.16:10I clothed you with an embroidered dress and put leather sandals on you.
Isaiah 61:10..a bride adorns herself with jewels; Song of Sol. :9 one jewel of your necklace; Jer. 2:32 can a virgin forget her ornaments; song of Sol 7:1 thighs like jewels; Mat 26:7 very expensive ointment, Christ approved; story of Esther she was given cosmetics and went thru 6 months of cosmetics etc before being presented to the king; did she not use cosmetics; fine clothes n jewelry?; Gen. 24:53 servant brought jewels n ornaments gave them to rebekkah, her brother and her mother; song of Sol. 1:10 jewels; gold, silver, ornaments etc; Luke 15:22 prodigal son..father tells servant bring best robe; put ring on him n shoes on him; Is. 49:18 Lord says put on ornament….plus we will get crowns in Heaven and the streets will be made of gold etc.. so I think jewelry n makeup are like money and driving…NOT forbidden BUT BE CONSERVATIVE…Motto: Phil. 4:5 Let your moderation be known to all men.
Pastor Doug, I am one of your good follower and also a Sabbath keeper, meanwhile I want to ask the Church model before and today.. The letters of Paul and others always says “To the elders or Brethen” in new testament.. Now we have Pastor’s in Church.. Is this Pastor model in Church is align in Bible? Like the old Churches? Lovingly waiting for your reply or any articles I might have missed.. God bless to all..
This Pastor is a great man. I like the way he interprets the bible. He is Not influenced by someone. I am a Muslim and a Lot of things what you say is similar. Also the jews habe the same rules. In Islam it is forbidden to Wear Gold or Silver but you can keep Them at Home and Trade with it. Good job. Pastor
This should be up to the Holy Spirit to convict us it shouldn’t be a denomination doctrine as it is one of the disputable matters that Paul talks about. The SDA church should be more concerned about getting out into the community and telling people the gospel of how they can be sure of eternal life (which I’m sure is not based on whether or not you are wearing jewellery!). I see it as an accessory to an outfit not something that I think about as in “I’ve got to have the biggest, boldest necklace I can find to make me feel good”. In fact it’s only costume jewellery I wear costing a few pounds not anything expensive!
What best pleases the Lord, is not to be a Pharisee or legalistic. Put those verses in the Corinthian context of prostitution. Why are you wearing a tie? Jesus didn’t. Fashion? Pressure. Making a statement, or just because the meaning is to dress decently. Yes, we see many jingling with lots of jewelry and bling. But pastor, focus on the heart not the outward appearance. My wedding ring is about being married. My earstuds, I’m a lady, pearls to church, I’m classically well dressed for my Lord. Any adorning can be to make a statement, look, I’m so humble, no jewelry. I’m so holy, wear only skirts. I’m so spiritual, have this mission to look modest, but actually I’m proud and a hypocrite. Horrible.
Ezekiel 16:10-13; I clothed you in embroidered cloth…I adorned you with ornaments, put bracelets on your wrists and a chain on your neck. I put a jewel in your nose, earrings in your ears and a beautiful crown on your head. Revelation 21:2; Then I, John, saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband… There are many more verses, as you know that speak of ornaments in a positive light. It really saddens me how these doctrines belong to Ellen G White and not the “whole” Truth, from the word of God. Don’t forget the Ornaments of men, like expensive cars/trucks. Hopefully you don’t have an expensive vehicle pastor Doug 😉 It’s subjects like these that cause people to really see the hypocrisy in others. Many SDA women don’t wear jewelry or makeup, but boy do they gossip or withhold good things from people in need. Colossians 2:20-23; Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations-“Do not touch, Do not taste, Do not handle,” which all concern things which perish with the using- according to the commandments and doctrines of Ellen G White :-)? These things INDEED have an APPEARANCE of wisdom in self imposed religion and false humility… Our flesh will be burned, along with all our material things. Christ is what matters, and He is in Whom we should place all our faith, discussion, teaching, doctrine, focus and hope.
I’m disappointed in you Pastor Doug because you presented scriptures for proof text to support your opinion rather than bible facts. Every scripture you referenced to point out the “bad” of jewelry were scriptures where the people had allowed a blessing to become a stumbling block and a curse. They used jewelry for idolatry, but that doesn’t mean the jewelry itself was the negative force that caused the people to participate in false worship. Why didn’t you reference the jewelry spoken of in Gen. 24: 22-30 or what the LORD said HE did with jewelry in Ezek 16:9-14? Do you realized that some people in the bible used FOOD to worship idols? I don’t see you teaching that meat should be avoided because someone included meat in an idolatrous practice – yet you teach jewelry should be avoided for that very reason. As for 1 Tim 2:9 and 1 Pet 3:3 instructing not to be adorned with jewelry, the point is to NOT let jewelry and clothing and hairstyles be what defines you because if it is, that will make you unprofitable to the LORD. These scriptures are no different than what Jesus told the disciples using BODY PARTS as the source of offence (Matt 18: 8, 9). Jesus said – don’t let your eye or your hand offend you, but he wasn’t saying get rid of your body parts because they are an offence. Jesus was teaching that you must rid yourself of things IF they are an offence. Paul and Peter are teaching THAT SAME THING: don’t let jewelry cause you to offend. They were not teaching that jewelry IS inherently an offence.
Whilst I will no longer wear earrings in my pierced ears, because I am not convicted wearing certain items of jewellry (wedding bands and tie pins included) has anything to do with salvation, I might wear a necklace, bracelet or possibly a ring when going somewhere special. I’ve posted the following verses hoping to spark discussion on them because it seems to me to be very one-sided that SDAs do not address them in sermons or discussions on this topic: Genesis 24:53 And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things. Exodus 3:22 But every woman shall borrow of her neighbour, and of her that sojourneth in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: and ye shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters; and ye shall spoil the Egyptians. Exodus 3:22 But every woman shall borrow of her neighbour, and of her that sojourneth in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: and ye shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters; and ye shall spoil the Egyptians. Isaiah 61:10 | View whole chapter | See verse in context I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels. Exodus 33:5 For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.
All GLORY to Our Gracious Saviour Lord Jesus Christ 🙏 Amen YESHUA REIGNS FOREVER 🙏 Jewellery : When someone loves and lives for Jesus Christ and Believe that God gave His Life to Save us. Then, you Love the Lord so much, that all these materialistic world and desire is absolutely Nothing. You don’t have time to invest on these but to please others. There is elegance and Pleasantness in the Children of the HOLY SPIRIT, that nothing in this world can ever design. Gratitude my Saviour My Salvation – YESHUA 🙏 Amen Thank you so much Pastor Doug for the word of God. God bless you always From India
(This is an essay loooolll) but: I enjoy Doug Bachelors sermons but the first two verses failed to prove wearing jewelry is a sin. This sermon is an affirmation of his personal conviction. I’m a firm believer in going back and reading the verse for myself. In 1 Timothy 2:9 it says in the NKJV version: “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing.” Idk how people automatically take from that verse “no jewelry”. The key word in that verse is moderation. Also at the beginning of the verse it states “women adorn themselves” it doesn’t say “women shall not adorn themselves” which means the verse isn’t against it, the verse is against excessiveness. The verse also addresses hair and clothing: does this then mean you can’t wear nice clothes and have a nice hair style? Ofc not! It just means that those things shouldn’t get in the way or come before God. (And even within that point your tax bracket plays a huge role. If your a millionaire verses someone who makes minimum wage a Rolex might not be excessive for the rich person because they got it like that) If God had a problem with materialism he wouldn’t have promised Cannan to the Israelites and he wouldn’t have promise Solomon gold and wisdom and riches. However, when the people let that supersede God it became a problem. Then In 1 Peter 3:3 which is the sister verse of 1 Timothy. Not only does this verse address hair, jewelry, and clothing in the same order but it also stresses moderation it states in the NKJV: 1 Peter 3:3-4 “Do not let your adornment be merely outward— arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting fine apparel— rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.
Pastor I am in total agreement with you on this short presentation. Especially the part when you said you don’t wear a wedding ring because you want to stay far away from pagan and pagan practices as possible. So explain to me when you seem to endorse celebrating Christmas and Easter when their origin is pagan? Still many aspects of them are so heavily pagan. We cannot and should not embrace the pagan or the profane into our church. It is these concession we give up and by the time we check ourselves we are giving up so much more. Soon will we embrace Halloween is the world comes up with a christian version of it? Note it is already happening. We Fall for somethings we might fall for many more things. We must stop being Christians of “convenience or what feels good or right” Christians. There is no compromising as to how we obey God even when it seems or feels right. Remember the Ark of the Covenant when it was falling, the Holly Vessels Nebuchadnezzar used, the profane or common fire Aaron sons used and the sacrifice Cain offered to God? They all felt like the good and looked like the right thing to do, well maybe with the exception of the king. We must follow Him how he wants us to not how we want to. No disrespect, just need some clarification or input.
I am a born SDA and at some point in my life I got tired of my faith and I wanted to try the life outside, so I went ahead and pierced my ears, 3 on the right and 4 on the left. And colored my hair blonde. I almost got a tattoo when I dated this half Fil-Jewish guy. But i held back because it was going to be there like a scar.
I say it again, this the spirit of religion and legalism. Wearing jewelry is not a sin. Obsession is the sin. Also our relationship and right standing with God can not be measured by outward works or merits by wearing certain clothes, no jewelry, no makeup etc. Performing any of these things and others to earn God’s love and pleasure is works righteousness. God already loves you, even if you stopped loving Him He won’t stop loving you. Rest in what Jesus had done to make you pleasing to God not what you do with your filthy rag righteousness.
I am an SDA and I wear jewellery because I love it. I indeed love the Lord most and I’m only concerned with thus saith the Lord. That is my focus and how He sees me. I read His word daily. I have studied jewellery specifically as a subject matter and there’s no authority in the word for not wearing jewellery. Exodus 3:22 God said “every woman shall borrow of her neighbour, and of her that sojourneth in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: and ye shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters; and ye shall spoil the Egyptians”. God is a God of consistency. Also read Ezekiel 16. I am so weary of SDA’s who try to twist the word of God so it’s fits in with their own opinion. Thus they in effect make their opinion an idol!!
Jesus was heart centered meaning what’s the true intention behind everything we do. Is it for show or truly for the Love God. For example, two people can feed the poor, one is truly trying to be a blessing and the other is trying to gain recognition. We who see this may not see the difference between the two as they both are doing a great deed but it is God who sees the heart. The same way if one chooses to wear a necklace, a Christian may wear one simply because they like to wear a necklace. Others may struggle with it. At the end of the day, my struggles or convictions is not to be put off on everyone to do the same thing that God is dealing with me on.
I can slightly agree, however, it really is bothersome that you pointed out all these scriptures on jewelry, BUT DIDN’T mention Isaiah 61:10 “I will greatly rejoice in the Jehovah, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.” So we can read clearly a bride wore jewels. And even more the scripture where God says to Isreal in Ezekiel 16:10-14 “I clothed you also with broidered work, and shod you with badgers’ skin, and I girded you about with fine linen, and I covered you with silk. I decked you also with ornaments, and I put bracelets on your hands, and a chain on your neck. I put a jewel on your forehead, and earrings in your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head. were you decked with gold and silver; and your raiment was of fine linen, and silk, and broidered work; you did eat fine flour, and honey, and oil: and you were exceeding beautiful, and you did prosper into a kingdom. renown went forth among the heathen for your beauty: for it was perfect through my comeliness, which I had put on you, said the Lord Jehovah.” I think these scriptures are quite relevant and feel they should have been mentioned as well. Honestly I have questioned jewelry. I do wear a couple rings and maybe a necklace every now and then. I have felt a conviction more on earrings. However, I do not think it’s going against God if you wear jewelry.
I totally agree with you Pastor Doug and since we know the bible discourages the wearing of jewelry which includes the wedding ring, this biblical principle must as well be applied to wearing a wrist watch which is jewelry as well. And if we continue with a practice that the bible has discouraged, that is sin unfortunately. Let’s apply the principle across the board.
Amen! I understand that many will be offended by this, but, if you’re very hesitant and heavily against the idea of giving up jewellery and you instead choose cling on to it, you’re kinda showing that you’re idolising your jewellery, and value it more than the word of God says. Once you give it up, you’ll realise how pointless it really is. I mean, if you wear a watch, that’s fine; since you need to tell the time. But a Rolex? Or an extremely expensive watch? What’s the point? Just get a normal, cheap, not-too-flashy one. Because, if you like to invest in expensive jewellery, you’re very likely to cause others to sin, as they may be envious of your possessions, as Christians, that’s the last thing we want(!) On the Last Day, we’re not going to be taking our jewellery with us to Heaven, so that just shows that the Lord couldn’t care less about them; neither should we. As genuine followers of Christ, we should be reflecting the Lord Jesus and how He lived His life in the Gospels. The Holy Spirit working in us is what we should be satisfied with, not our jewellery! God bless you, Pastor Doug and your ministry! 🙏🏼❤️
How about Ezekiel 16:10-14 Job was given rings and silver as gifts and he is known as one of the three righteous men. The father of the prodical son gave him a ring when he returned. Baby Jesus was given gold as a gift. God says silver and gold are mine. In heaven we are going to be awarded with treasures of precious stones. When God created Luficer he used precious stones. Abrahams servant gave Rebekah jewelery of gold, silver and to rhe brother and mother.
Ezekiel 16……. 9″ ‘I bathed you with water and washed the blood from you and put ointments on you. 10I clothed you with an embroidered dress and put sandals of fine leather on you. I dressed you in fine linen and covered you with costly garments. 11. I adorned you with jewelry: I put bracelets on your arms and a necklace around your neck, 12and I put a ring on your nose, earrings on your ears and a beautiful crown on your head. 13So you were adorned with gold and silver; your clothes were of fine linen and costly fabric and embroidered cloth. Your food was honey, olive oil and the finest flour. You became very beautiful and rose to be a queen. 14And your fame spread among the nations on account of your beauty, because the splendor I had given you made your beauty perfect, declares the Sovereign Lord.
I was raised pentacostal apostolic. My dad and grandpa were pastors. After my parents divorced when I was 12 things changed. But I still hold my upbringing to heart. However I am currently a bench jeweler and manage a jeweler store. There was a gentleman who I deem a prophet because of his words I can’t go into here in the comment, but he told me I knew better than what I was doing and that one day I will move on from this trade. My job is to sell jewelry and tell folks how beautiful they look and how they need a certain piece and I feel convicted every time because I know it’s not godly to make them focus on adornments and I don’t know what to do because it’s my job.
I had experienced from my mom . She is a strong Christian all her live and one day she go work overseas and her cousin bought a gift of an expensive gold necklace for her and since that her heart turned to believe the beauty and the value of rich on her body. And after that she has diabetic and one day thief stolen her necklace and seem that she lost her hope of things and come back to God’s love
It is totally up to the person, to even do as you will” it is your body and soul that god has made in you. Let no man, government or preacher tell other wise. This pastor and others should be more worried, interested and involved in a cause that is totally missed by most yet would do a world of good in many respects. People are homeless and starving yet you ponder apparel when the larger cause eludes us. Unite in the message to stop supporting the use of private jets, tour bus’s and private homes in passing the word of god and feed the hungry while being a great person for god.
