Most venues have a spot for sparkler exits. This can have pros and cons. Your venue allows wedding sparklers and has a good space for sparkler exits. The space could be small or need decorating. Knowing these details will help you choose sparklers. Wedding Photographer: If your venue allows sparklers, great! Next, speak with your wedding photographer. If you haven’t hired one yet, ask about it in your interview. If you’ve already hired a wedding photographer who doesn’t know how to use sparklers, speak with them about it. He/she can probably read a few blogs and practice before your special day. Why order your sparklers early? Here’s an example. If your sparklers arrive a couple of weeks before your wedding, your photographer can practice with them! If you know where you’ll be exiting, tell your photographer so they can help you. Sparkler Company: There are many sparkler companies. Sparkler companies differ in the type of sparkler they carry. Look for companies that sell steel wire core, metal sparklers, and/or minimal smoke and ash. These words describe the sparklers you want to buy. They produce little smoke and won’t ruin the sparkler pictures. Avoid companies that describe their sparklers as “wooden core, bamboo” or any variation of “wood.” These sparklers burn wood, so they make a lot of smoke. Your pictures will be ruined by smoke. Shipping is another difference between sparkler companies. Some companies offer fast shipping if your wedding is close. VIP Sparklers offers 2-5 business day shipping. If my wedding venue won’t let us leave with sparklers, what can I do? First, listen to them. Understand why they’re hesitant. Their concerns may be simple or complex. Either way, they will appreciate your efforts to understand them. Sometimes, that is the determining factor! Venues are concerned about fire hazards and liability. You can include a statement in the contract that says the venue isn’t liable. Maybe they had this problem before and just want to take reasonable precautions. If the venue and staff think sparklers are a fire hazard, explain how you will safely do your sparkler exit (this article covers it). Should I have wedding sparkler exit music? Any ideas? Music is a great option! It gets people dancing. Most people forget to include music during their wedding exit. We just want the bride and groom to know they have that option. There are pros and cons to including music during your sparkler exit. Pros: Makes the party more fun. It’s usually more fun. If it’s too loud, it might make it harder to hear instructions or directions from the photographer. If you want music during your sparkler exit, play it at a low volume. Choose an upbeat song! Your guests are wishing you well with sparklers! Choose an upbeat song about fireworks. One suggestion: Firework by Katy Perry. If you’re playing music during your sparkler exit, make sure the equipment reaches the designated area. The music won’t have the same effect if it’s in another room. Should I use water or sand to dispose of used sparklers? A detailed plan for your wedding sparkler exit will help your venue feel more comfortable. Venues want to know you have control of your wedding, especially when sparklers are involved. Use sand in buckets to hold your sparklers. Sand is safe and cools down hot sparklers. Display your sparklers before the wedding sparkler exit. Bride and grooms even use them as centerpieces! Metal buckets are sold as sparkler buckets. Think about your theme and whether it’s suitable as a centerpiece. If you don’t want to use a bucket, try a vase filled with sand. Don’t dip your sparklers past the metal handle. The “sparkler composition” end should not be covered in sand. Your sparkler bucket is for transporting your sparklers. Your guests can easily form a line to get their sparklers. Tell guests how to dispose of their sparklers safely. Tell them to put used sparklers in the sand bucket and stick the burnt end in the sand. This stops guests from fighting with hot sparklers! Your venue will appreciate your courtesy and neatness! If your venue was hesitant, adding another poor experience will only encourage them to refuse future sparkler exits. Think of all the fun your wedding exit developed! Don’t ruin this for future couples. How do you light sparklers? This affects how much time you have for your wedding sparkler exit. When working with sparklers, use no more than half the sparkler time for lighting. 36-inch sparklers burn for about 4 minutes. After the first sparkler, no more than two minutes should be spent lighting the rest. If planned right, one minute is enough! First, find the flame source. Matches won’t work. Sparklers need a steady flame. The best way to light sparklers is with another sparkler. You’ll need to light a few sparklers at first. Most people don’t have small torches, so we suggest using a BBQ lighter. BBQ lighters are safer than traditional lighters because of their long nozzle. You can’t predict when sparklers will start sparks. You won’t get burned by a few sparklers, but most people are startled by the sudden glow. BBQ lighters let guests light sparklers calmly. Candles are another option and work well, especially since they add to the ambiance. It provides a strong, consistent flame. Once you’ve lit a few sparklers, use them to light the rest. It’s the same as using a lit candle to light others. Remember this: “Pass the sparkle, not the sparkler.” How should I arrange my sparkler exit? Your sparkler exit set up will affect your wedding pictures. The principle is the same: wedding guests form two lines. You decide the shape. Your “sparkling runway” can be straight or curved, depending on the space. Ask your wedding photographer what works best for your wedding. Here are our general guidelines for a wedding sparkler exit: Have each guest take a sparkler from a spot. Arrange your guests into two lines. Assign someone as your sparkle starter at each end of each line. Each sparkle starter will have a sparkler. Light the sparkler using a lighter or candle. Each “sparkle starter” lights their own sparkler. Then, they all light their sparklers at once. Then, they light the sparkler next to them. You can have all four “sparkle starters” light each sparkler, or each guest can “pass the sparkle” to the person next to them. The sparklers should light up in a line from the outside in. The bride and groom should be ready to walk down the aisle. The lighting should take half the sparkle time, so you can walk down the aisle several times. Take as many pictures as you want!

  • Hello mate – Just had my first sparkler exit, found your vid as I was researching and it helped loads. Absolutely nailed the shot using your advice. From this vid I found your ‘Wedding Photography: My 10 Favorite Easy Wedding Poses’ … loved that as well. As a thanks for your vids I have just purchased your ‘Natural Feels Presets’ to show my appreciation. Great work and mad skills! Thank you again, Drew!

  • Thanks for sharing this info John. I had a couple request this shot on our meet up the other night. I was kinda nervous about the request, as I’ve never done this before. I initially thought drag the shutter with a flash. However I think the continuous light source will look better. Directing the couple and the guests on what you would like them to do, cherry on the cake!. Thanks again!

  • This was so good! Thank you for going through every single step. My first Sparkler shoot was a complete fail as my main camera died and I had to scramble to get to the back up set up in minutes and I wasn’t experienced so I was pretty stressed. Fortunately (for me!) the groomsmen screwed up the sparklers and it was a total fail all around. Let’s just say some of the guys got burned (they’re ok) but they learned their lesson about “playing with fire” and I was off the hook!

  • Just stumbled across your tutorial on how to photograph a sparkler exit. I’ve never shot one before, so I was doing a little research because I will need to take this shot at an upcoming wedding. I had no clue, my first thought was to drag the shutter and pop with a kiss of flash. You’ve changed my thinking; as I’m perusal your article for the 3rd time, I’m placing an order immediately for a Lume Cube Panel. I’ve gone from WFT do I do to totally relaxed. Thank you!

  • Thank you Thank you Thank you! Your advice was so straightforward and easy to follow. My niece recently asked me to shoot the sparkler exit for her wedding (as her main photographer had to leave before the end of the party….). I’m not a professional, but like to shoot candids at weddings. So this was new territory for me, for sure! I bought the Lume light, which was very easy to use. And just followed the steps. The only one I had to change was shutter speed, as I didn’t want any chance of motion blur with all the moving around. But my Canon Mark III 5D does a great job with higher ISO. Had a great time, got fantastic results!

  • John I am confused here. So a constant led got a temperature of about 5500K. The sparklers are warm. So I guess you can warm up the led light coming out from the cube or in the limit if you can’t warm up use a orange gel? But then if you go and change your camera temperature because you are using the gel or you have changed the constant led light temperature will the sparklers colour be lost? How can I use the cube and preserve the sparklers colour?
