In 2020 and 2021, three Boston-area municipalities became the first to legalize polyamorous marriage. State laws deem polygamy a third-degree felony, punishable with up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. However, not many people engaged in polyamory have any legal rights. Multiple U.S. states (including California, Washington, Louisiana, and Rhode Island) have explicitly banned polygamy.

Polygyny is legal in 58 out of nearly 200 sovereign states, the vast majority of them being Muslim-majority countries.
