His doctor, Théodore de Mayerne, recommended a powder made from a human skull, herbs, wine, and milk to be taken at the full moon. • My closest friend is British and told me that during the war the Queen Mother would be up early to inspect those parts of London which had been hit by German planes during the previous night…she was always the first at the site and always trying to bring a note of normalcy to the situation. The British loved her.

  • Hitler called her the most Dangerous Woman in Europe, she certainly rose to the challenge during the war years with King George the VI,and even after his death and been a widow for 50 years I really felt for her but she remained a example for all and never missed a remeberence day and the respect she showed the war Dead was remarkable, she was one of my all time favourite Royals.

  • She was a real lady that had everyone sorted. How she changed when she got older. The Queen Mother was really attractive as a young woman, even with the plain hairstyle. One never knows what life is going to throw at you. Never did she realise that she would be married to a king 🤴 & she a Queen. I often wonder why she never had another child, it probably would have been son. Things are not like that today in the Royal Family. The children are different & not willing to give up to serve. The new generation changes with the times like everyone else. Looking at this film on her life, she was a remarkable woman of her time.

  • So the queen mother supported Charles affair? My opinion of her just took a nose dive. If your not happy in your marriage you either work on it or divorce? You don’t cheat! I still can’t believe he actually married his mistress. He should have been made to give up his claim to the throne like his great uncle.

  • One funny story I’ve heard about the Queen Mother was that she was notoriously late for dinner most evenings. So her daughter, Queen Elizabeth II, would frequently tell her mother dinner would be at 5, but it would not actually be served until 6. Of course, I’m not sure if this is accurate, but humorous all the same.

  • She never had problems, like” what I will eat tomorrow”?. My grandmom lived 97, she was orphan, lived through war, starvation, repression, raise three kids, husband was killed in war war 2. And she was smart, beautiful, kind lady. Always smiled, and tough me to share. This is real ” steel magnolia”!!! What so special about this women, who grow up in luxury. So shame .Why human society still have royalty???

  • Queen Victoria, Queen Mary of Teck, Queen Elizabeth I & Queen Elizabeth II all have the same strength, their courage, their love and power. How they stand strong throughout their reign. Their love to the people of the United Kingdom. What they have gone through especially Queen Elizabeth II together with the Royal household during World War II. No matter how the situation was during those times, these women still stand strong. & I’m sure Princess Anne is really like Queen Elizabeth. My dream is to see Queen Elizabeth II especially to be in London during her jubilee celebration. My prayers for her and the royal family. All the way from Brunei Darussalam. Long live the Queen. God Bless her and the royal household. #myidol #bigfan #reallywishtokissherhand

  • With a daughter like margaret, this old mashed potato had the audacity to make pricess Diana’s life more uncomfortable and what could be expected from that kind of a woman than appreciation to charles’s infidelity! What a family! margaret might have taken after her mother in meanness and sadism. Bad people live long for sure.

  • The Queen originally appeared around the bombed out London streets in furs & diamonds. She was advised by the palace staff, that the common folks felt uncomfortable w the Queen flaunting her good fortune of marrying into the RF, and she reluctantly toned it done. She thought the people would want to see their Queen in jewels. It’s also a fact that she & the king slept at Windsor Castle when London was in danger throughout the war. They weren’t at Buckingham Palace. That was early PR spin to make the Brits think they were very brave. Why stay in a huge target when there was a fortified castle with a nice cellar only 20 minutes away? Plus, her daughters were there.

  • I love interesting things like this. It’s really a joy for me to study history and the posh houses and that. I remember seeing princess Diana with my own eyes when she came to Australia in the early 80s to support the bushfire aftermath. Ill never forget it. She went right past me in the car and waved to us all.

  • The Queen mother and all her wealth jewels homes. She was worth every thing.one of the most gracious of our Queen consorts.A real wife and help to our late King.I have lived now under 5 monarchs.and am 93 now,and still proud of my country and all it stands for.I am an Englishman and a patriot.I have a lovely wife, daughter and son, granddaughter, and 3 grandsons. What more could I want. I count myself blessed, that I can love and be loved. To me that is treasure indeed.

  • If one prince had to abdicate because he wanted to marry an American divorcée, then I think Prince Charles should abdicate to his son Prince William. There shouldn’t be a divorced individual as the king or queen of Great Britain? What standard have we fallen to that Prince Charles love affair with Camilla doesn’t affect his chances at being king? He shouldn’t be king.

  • “The queen mother is an expert in image and presentation”…. how my granny would have laughed her pearly white teeth at that. She always told us children: ‘Brush it! Brush your teeth at least for 3 minutes…Don’t whimper about your braces! You don’t want to end up looking like one of them British royal people now do you?’.

  • While Lady Bowes-Lyon was helping run Glamis Castle as a war hospital (which she did with great energy & determination), she met James Stuart, Prince Albert’s equerry. Stuart and Bowes-Lyon were courting quite seriously, deeply in love beyond her well-known flirtatious ways, but she caught Bertie’s eye and, as the World knows, he proposed three times. Her family more or less decided for her on prop #3. Sadly for James Stuart (and her), he was shipped off to America. Coincidence? Maybe. Once Bertie and Elizabeth did marry, they had trouble having children for undisclosed reasons. After Elizabeth’s birth, doctors were (possibly sub rosa) brought in to assist and Margaret duly made her appearance. However, mum Elizabeth put her foot down about more children. At least this is what I’ve heard. Of course, the QM was extremely protective and close to Albert, especially when it came to the snide remarks from brother David Edward and particularly Wallis Simpson, all of which must have been terribly painful to King Albert. The QM ramped up her dress sense, engaging Parisian stylists and being recognized as, far from the dowdy frump Wallis accused her of being, quite an influencer. And, most important, she was beloved of her subjects. (Oddly, letters from Wallis to her ex-husband Simpson have come to light…she was terrified of marrying Edward and still felt herself to be in love w/ Simpson, even as their divorce was being finalized!) As far as future marriages, I think the Queen Mum began to relax her thinking over the years.

  • Diana was totally unsuited to Charles and his family, I wish the Queen Mother had spoken earlier, before the wedding! Charles always loved (and needed) Camilla, but she was older, experienced and excluded by his parents! Very sad! The Queen mother approved of their relationship because she made him happy!! Charles missed her terribly, (I also miss my grandmother in the same way, nobody understood me like her), a sensitive Scorpio needs someone comforting, reliable, loyal and affectionate on their side! Congratulations Charles & Camilla, stay strong together, regardless!!

  • FYI. Steel Magnolia doesn’t mean what that British historian thinks it means. It’s just the name of a play that made a halfway popular movie, not some term in the common language. At best, it referred to a middle class white woman in the deep South, not to an upper class beauty who perfectly represents society’s notion of her sex and station.

  • Simpson really was a hard women. She bossed David around like a little kid. There was a TV program with Edward R. Merill, where the media would come into peoples home an interview them. Simpson entertained them by playing Jacks on her coffee table. It was humility. Richard Burton, the English film star and husband of Elizabeth said that Wallis Simpson was the most vulgar women he knew.

  • You say she lived ’till 99 because she was “tough”. That maybe so, though; I have a more compelling argument… Her life’s longevity is more the result of having led a wealthy pampered existence for most of f her life, with servants/courtiers catering to her every need and well being. She never struggled for money nor was she forced to perform slave labour of any kind or to dwell along side the “working poor”. It’s fact, privilege of that magnitude would certainly add years to anyone’s life. Her daughter is currently the longest reigning Monarch to date.

  • How do people rule a country that they know nothing about? If they are rich and in this bubble closed of society…. I don’t see how they could even remotely relate to what would need to be reformed for the average working man…. the people who make the country…. im not referring to the Queen Mother or this documentary at all. Im simply speaking in terms of most “high societies,” who rule…. (parliament, government officials etc,..) In regards to the Queen Mother she has done a lifetime of duty that should be respected…. she did a great job and raised a great queen!

  • It’s actually disgusting how the royals and the public dismissed Wallis, just as they dismissed Meghan and blamed them both for their husbands leaving the titles behind and living their own life when in reality, it wasn’t the wives decision, it was the mans. People now say Meghan made Harry leave, she made him turn his back on his family when in reality, he looks happier than ever now he’s got more freedom.

  • So that was queen mum.I’m good with that.To the British it’s a huge deal and I respect that. My British is from my fathers side. After that it probably takes a great deal of mathematics to figure out what’s in me.But I am across the pond from you.I don’t give a damn what’s in me as long as it works.I liked her.In all fairness God was kind to her.96 years. Less than .01 of us get past 80.As they say in the American south…they threw the mold out with her.Culturally meaning she will be the only one.

  • I have watched many documentaries on the RF. I have found that after the King died the Queen Mother was very jealous of Queen Elizabeth her daughter. That is horrible. Instead of trying to control & get her daughter to listen to her, she should’ve supported her. Queen Mother grew to love the POWER. She highly resented Prince Philip because the Queen listened to her husband as of course she would. She was very arrogant, spent money in excess way over what she should’ve & complained a great deal so as to make Queen Elizabeth feel guilty (which is what she wanted to accomplish). I don’t find that to be a gracious & wonderful person. I don’t know what pictures everyone else are looking at but I have never thought that the Queen Mother was attractive. She was very homely. I have the utmost respect for Queen Elizabeth. She was a truly a remarkable Royal. She knew what service & dedication was. Princess Margaret was the wild child but also the beauty of the family.

  • If much talents are and does not help so him anywhere even if is wise however, his life may no be family circumstances. Humble attitude to criticism It is never possible to do it in my country. And to position of the country that it does and eat the country simply absurdly like character of a nation that nothing is

  • I didn’t Know she was accomplice to his adultery with Camilla. Is just unbelievable I had a greater view of her and if she was really loyal to the monarchy she would not let that happen and look for their reconciliation. Based on what I see she saw Princess Diana got the most attention of anyone in the monarchy even worldwide loved. Now I see what Queen Elizabeth want her husband had her move to the Clarence House. So the smile I loved from the Queen Mother was deceitful? Tell me your opinion.

  • Jeremiah 6 DAVID WORD NOT SOWN YET 23Can an Ethiopian b change his skin or a leopard its spots? Neither can you do good who are accustomed to doing evil. 24″I will scatter you like chaff driven by the desert wind. 25This is your lot, the portion I have decreed for you,” declares the Lord, “because you have forgotten me and trusted in false gods. 26I will pull up your skirts over your face that your shame may be seen— 27your adulteries and lustful neighings, your shameless prostitution! I have seen your detestable acts on the hills and in the fields. Woe to you, Jerusalem! How long will you be unclean?” ABRAHAM WORD NOT SOWN YET

  • Is it just me…this article doesn’t appear to offer up anything other than superficial smiles with the QM just basically turning up to shake hands or cut ribbons…where do we get to see the ‘real’ person and not the carefully crafted image. The only hint we get of who the Queen Mother really was, was her rather superior and arrogant treatment of Wallis Simpson…to hold a grudhe for life says it all…
