What To Wear For Casual Engagement Photos?

This article provides a list of 10 engagement photo outfit ideas for brides-to-be who prefer more casual aesthetics. The outfits can be dressy or casual, with options like a jumpsuit, dress, or suit. For casual outfits, a white shirt and jeans are essential pieces.

When choosing an outfit for engagement photos, it is important to keep comfort in mind, as it will show in the pictures. Outdoors, white dresses can still be worn, but choose one that won’t drag along the ground. Elevated separates in classic black and white are a stylish option for both men and women.

For fall engagement photos, couples can choose from cozy to casual to formal attire. Some couples prefer a fun, dressed up outfit, while others prefer a more casual, polished look. Most couples choose to wear two outfits at their engagement session, one for a casual date and one for a more formal look.

The article also highlights the importance of considering your location when choosing an outfit. For example, a Lulus Puff Sleeve Mini Dress at Lulus ($59) is a great choice for a casual bride.

In terms of lighting, the sun sets around 6 p.m. in early spring and late fall, making it ideal for outdoor engagement photos. Avoid chunky patterns, stick to solid colors, bring two outfits, think about your surroundings, and coordinate your outfits.

What do you wear to a casual engagement?

  • A white showstopper. If youre the bride, you want to make a statement at your engagement party—and what better way to do so than a showstopper of a dress? As the bride, you can go with whatever type of dress you want. Have fun with it! Go for something eye-catching and unique that grabs peoples attention (the party is in your honor, after all!). Whatever dress you choose, consider going with a white frock
  • because white is the traditional color for wedding dresses, it will immediately set you apart as the bride-to-be.
  • The perfect engagement party dress. If youre attending someone elses engagement party, a dress is still a solid choice for attire. The kind of dress you wear will depend on the event. Going to a black-tie affair? A long gown or formal midi dress would be appropriate. Going to a more laid-back backyard BBQ? A fun maxi dress would be a great option. Want a dress with major versatility? You cant go wrong with a classic wrap dress. Just make sure to avoid anything white
  • as mentioned, a white dress is typically reserved for the bride at all wedding events—and you dont want your dress to compete.
  • An eye-catching jumpsuit. If dresses arent your style, a jumpsuit is a great alternative. For daytime or more laid-back engagement parties, you can keep it casual with a linen or cotton jumpsuit with some fun accessories (try layering a denim jacket!)—whereas for an evening or more formal engagement party, youd want to go with a sleeker cut, fabric, and style.
  • A suit. When it comes to attending an even somewhat dressy engagement party, you cant go wrong with a well-tailored suit. If youre the groom, a suit is also the perfect look for your engagement party
  • as the guest of honor, you want to show up looking your sharpest!
  • A dress shirt and pants. A button-down shirt and dress pants is one of the most versatile engagement party looks for men, as it can work for both more casual and more dressy events.
  • A more laid-back, casual outfit. If youre going to a more casual, relaxed engagement party, feel free to dress in a more casual, relaxed way—for example, a short-sleeved collared shirt and jeans.

Regardless of what outfit you choose, pay attention to the fit of your garments! You want to feel confident and also be comfortable in what youre wearing.

Should you wear lipstick for engagement photos?

Lips: Most lips benefit from definition, even when lipstick is not generally used. For a natural but polished look, try a shade or two darker than your lip color, apply lip pencil, smudged lips a bit and use a little gloss or lipstick.

Additional makeup tip: Apply a lighter lip color or gloss only to the center of lips to enhance a pouty look.

Powder: When Not to Shine – Apply a light dusting of translucent powder over your face to avoid shine and set makeup. Concentrate on the T-zone as necessary, and apply sparingly to lined or dry areas.

What is the best color to wear for engagement photos?

By avoiding ultra-bright, bold colors, it will help bring all the attention to your faces, and let the eye focus on the way you and your emotions.

The camera loves shades of soft pink and muted blues, mixed with sophisticated light neutrals like heather gray, creams, leather brown and white. And this softer color palette works in just about every location.

Pro tip : If we are going to be in a location with a lot of green like trees or grass, avoid wearing green or anything in the green color palette like turquoise.

Dress your guy in a fitted look. Leave the shorts, sandals and any pants that are loose or baggy at home. Dress your husband in fitted dress pants or colored pants, closed-toed shoes, and a solid shirt. Add in a suit coat, blazer or sport coat, and he will look photo-ready.

What not to wear for engagement photos?

01 Avoid Small, Close Prints, Patterns and Logos. This may come as a surprise, but for your engagement pictures outfits try and stay away from patterns and large logo printed clothing. These tend to not photograph as well. Staying away from small, tight stripes and prints will save your engagement photos! Logos distract from the subject and relationships (aka you & your love story!). Instead, wear solid colored pieces that compliment each other! Your outfits wont be clashing with each other & solid colors will tie in nicely with any location you chose!

02 All about those dreamy vibes. For dreamy engagement pictures like the ones in our portfolio, choose natural/earthy colors, off-whites, and neutral colors. We love recommending: beige/tan, denims, olive green, terracota and black. These colors always work great with all skin tones and almost all landscapes and backgrounds!

You can wear white for your engagement pictures, but too much white is also best to avoid. Have one of you wear something white and the other one wear a color with more contrast.

How to wear hair for engagement photos?

Its entirely up to you to decide howd like to look in your engagement photos. Some brides prefer to wear their hair up and out of their face, while others prefer to sport loose waves or curls.

It depends! If you hate doing your hair (or know youre not comfortable with hairstyling), you may want to call in a professional for some assistance. However, if youre a hairstyling pro and you know how to get the look you want, by all means, save your money and do it yourself. As we mentioned earlier, some brides choose to use their engagement photos as a test run for their bridal hair and makeup look, which is also an option, especially if youre still deciding how you want to style your hair on the big day.

Do I need two outfits for engagement photos?

  • Embrace Your Style and Dress for Comfort. First and foremost, I want you to wear whatever makes you feel like you! Comfort really is key. If you feel uncomfortable in your clothing, it will show on camera. Listen to your gut when it comes to what you feel good in. Some couples love an excuse to go all out on a fun, dressed up outfit. Others prefer a more casual, but polished look.
  • It is entirely up to you, but most of my couples choose to wear two outfits at their engagement session. One “us on a cute, casual date” outfit and one more formal outfit. This will give your session two different looks, and I recommend beginning with the “cute date” outfit first (as this will help you to feel more natural as we all warm-up).
  • If it is your style, dont be afraid to dress things up! Your engagement session is the perfect opportunity to rock a fun, dressed up look that you might not normally have an excuse for. Long, flowy dresses and skirts look amazing on camera — they add movement to your clothing that tends to be very flattering and natural-looking. That being said, if youre a very casual couple that hates to dress up, dont feel pressured to wear anything that you dont actually like.
  • Choosing and Coordinating Colors for Your Engagement Session Outfits. Focus on coordinating colors, not matching colors. If you both wore the same exact color tone to your engagement session, how boring would those images be? For example, if you wear a blush dress, soft blue chunky necklace, and nude heels, then your partner might wear a navy coat with khaki or gray pants, paired with brown leather shoes and maybe even a blush pocket square. You each tie in the main color that the other is wearing (blush for you, navy for them), and create a well-coordinated look that isnt too matchy-matchy.
  • I generally recommend selecting lighter tones and more muted shades. Very bright, bold colors (think, like hot pink or cherry red types of tones) can sometimes distract viewers eyes to go to your clothing and not your faces.
  • The above being said… the above is a rule that can be broken when done well. Sometimes, a pop of color can be the perfect touch for your engagement session color palette! Bethanys yellow sweater (below) completed her and Patricks look. The key was having one big pop of color — and the tone was subtle enough that it complemented the overall look. Like all good things in life, its all about balance!

Flatter Your Features When Selected Your Outfits. Im going to preface this ENTIRE section with some reassurance that youll look incredible at your session. That being said, youre only human and its natural to have some features that youre self-conscious about at times. This section is intended to be preventative if you suspect that you may nitpick parts of your body (let me say it again, youll look GORGEOUS at your session). If this is you, the best thing to do is recognize anything you may be self-conscious about and choose clothes that best complement those feelings. When you wear clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident, youll look comfortable and confident on camera! Here are a few common concern areas:

Ah, the age old question — what the heck should I wear for our engagement session?! I swear as we get older, finding something to wear only gets harder…and when it’s for something as special as engagement photos it can feel totally daunting. When Matt and I took engagement photos before our wedding, I spent weeks upon weeks agonizing over our outfits. There were countless Pinterest boards, online orders, in-store returns, and hours of frustration that resulted in wanting to call the whole thing off. Okay, that’s a little bit of an exaggeration, but just know that I get it! Choosing your outfits for your engagement session can be a pain, and sometimes it’s tough to even know where to start.

There are a few key things to take into consideration when selecting your engagement session attire, so keep reading to find out!

1. Choose light, soft, neutral tones.. This is totally a personal preference, but my style of photography lends itself best to lighter, airier tones — like white, beige, and taupe — and pastels — like dusty blue, blush, etc. I find that neutral outfits are so romantic and timeless, and help to keep the focus on you! Brighter, more vivid colors can detract focus and make the viewer’s eye go right to your clothing instead of your beautiful faces, and darker colors like black and navy can make the photo look heavy and unbalanced.
