What To Wear To A Bangladeshi Wedding?

A Bangladeshi wedding is a culturally rich event that involves various pre-wedding rites, such as the ‘Kachchi Biyebari’ and ‘Gaye Holud’ ceremonies. The bride typically wears a traditional red or white saree, adorned with heavy embroidery and embellishments, while the groom wears a traditional groom’s attire, typically a sherwani or panjabi.

The Bengali culture is one of the most unique in the world, with the bride wearing a lehenga on both her wedding and reception. The wedding ceremony typically includes at least three ceremonies, with the first couple visiting each other and the bride or groom sitting on a stage. The bride or groom wears a sherwani or panjabi, while traditional dishes like biryani, korma, kebabs, and sweets are served to celebrate the joyous occasion.

For men, the most formal dress code is a black tailcoat, a white wing-collared shirt, and a white bow tie. Women should wear structured, floor-length gowns with a train, while men should wear a black tailcoat, a white wing-collared shirt, and a white bow tie.

For women, a formal Bangladeshi wedding calls for a sari, a traditional garment consisting of a long, flowing piece of fabric draped over the body and paired with a blouse and a petticoat. For occasions like Gaye Halud, any yellow Tant/Dhakai/Jamdani/ Tangaile saree and simple makeup are perfect.

For men, traditional attire includes sarees for brides and dhoti-kurta or dhoti-kurta for men. To add a touch of elegance, bring a light scarf/shawl to cover shoulders while in public.

What colors are not appropriate to wear to a wedding?

Here are the colours that are off limits for wedding guest attire.. Any shade of white. OK, this is probably pretty obvious, but you really cant wear white to a wedding. Theres a 99.9% chance that the bride will be sporting a white gown and you definitely dont want to steal the spotlight from her. Keep in mind that this includes all shades in the colour family, from ivory to alabaster, so skip those, too. P.S. If youre wearing a patterned dress with hints of white or a white accessory (like a pocket square or purse), thats A-OK, the point is to avoid an overwhelmingly white outfit.

Gold (and other metallics). Now, you may think dressing up as an Academy Award statue is fine, but you should probably save that number for another event (like NYE). Not only is gold a flashy choice that may keep eyes glued to you instead of the happy couple, but it may also rival what the bride is wearing if shes opted for a champagne or light gold dress (both options are pretty popular in the wedding dress world). P.S. this goes for other metallic shades, like rose gold and silver, too.

Light pastels. Sorry pastel-lovers, but basically all ultra-light colours are also off limits when it comes to wedding guest attire. Yes, a pale blue or a muted pink is fine, but if the colour is working its way to white, you should swap it for something else. Unsure if your look is too light? Try snapping a pic of it in the sun. If you can barely make out the hue of your outfit, its time to go back to the drawing board.

What to wear to a Bengali wedding as a western guest?

The Ceremony. Opt for timeless and formal Indian attire for the wedding ceremony, whether Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, or another faith. Women might wear dresses to wear to an Indian wedding like saris or lenghas. Men could don religious garments like a churidar or bundi, or a Western suit. Stick to traditional colors and fabrics. Simple jewelry and makeup keep the focus on the couple. Temple ceremonies may require heads covered and shoes removed. Carry essentials like wraps accordingly.

The Reception. Reception attire can be glamorous or fusion wear merging Indian and Western styles. Sari gowns, lehenga dresses, gowns with dupatta scarves, and Indo-Western suits fuse modern with heritage. Avoid anything too revealing or casual like shorts and t-shirts. The reception signals celebration – have fun with bold colors and dance-friendly fabrics, while maintaining modesty and respect.

For women, Indian wedding fashion allows deep expression of personal style within a framework of tradition. Embrace these leading options while carefully respecting guidelines.

What should a female guest wear to a Bengali wedding?

According to Ren, guests should always research the regional differences of Indian wedding attire before deciding on a color. For instance, women can opt for a white and red saree for Bengali weddings, and men can opt for simple kurta pyajamas in light colors or take a more traditional route and wear a dhoti set. White, ivory and traditional gold sarees also fit perfectly for South Indian weddings.

Before shopping, guests are encouraged to familiarize themselves with Indian fashion terminology. Lehengas and sarees are the most common options for women. A lehenga is a two-piece outfit that includes a top (usually cropped) with a full, high-waisted skirt. A saree is a long piece of fabric, often made of silk, thats used to wrap around the body. Men are encouraged to wear a sherwani, which is a long coat-like top. Traditional weddings can be broken up into different categories and different regions in India, says Patel. Say if the family is from the west side of India, then they have a different attire that the women wear, which is traditionally a saree. If they are from the state of Punjab, then they traditionally wear punjabi suits a three-piece outfit or a lehenga. South Indian wedding guests typically wear a saree.

However, its important to note that traditional dress is not always a requirement. While guests should always look for specific dress code requirements on the couples invitation or wedding website, alternative outfits—like a bright-colored pantsuit or jumpsuit—can be appropriate as well. Guests are invited to be themselves. There is no expectation for you to wear Indian clothes to an Indian wedding, adds Gohel. If you are not comfortable wearing traditional Indian clothes, any cocktail dress or ensemble that you would wear to a Western wedding is suitable. Given the unique opportunity, however, to experience culture in its richest form, guests should consider wearing traditional Indian wedding attire if they feel comfortable.

What to expect at a Bangladeshi wedding?

For a Hindu wedding ceremony in Bangladesh, the priest asks both the bride and groom to chant mantras that formalise Saat paake ghora and Kanya sampradaan. The bride and the groom exchange garlands and the groom will adorn the brides forehead with vermillion.

Saat paake ghora is a ritual where the newlyweds walk around the ceremonial fire seven times. The brides father has to give away the bride to the groom. This is known as Kanya sampradaan.

After the Hindu wedding ceremony, on the day of the wedding, the relatives and close friends will remain awake. This ceremony is known as Basor Raat. If the wedding ceremony ends by evening, then the basor raat will start after midnight. Since Hindu weddings take place in the evening, on the next day, before noon, the newlyweds will proceed to the grooms home.

Normally, for the Biya, the Bangladeshi bride wears a saree or lehenga whereas the groom wears a sherwani or Western-style suit.
