On average, Destination Weddings couples in Jamaica spend less than $6,500 on a wedding, including international travel, wedding packages, and attire. Beach weddings are typically informal affairs, so opting for a fun print, vibrant color, and shorter hemlines is recommended. For beach formal weddings, a dress, suit, or jumpsuit is acceptable, with breathable fabrics in a solid color (avoid black, cream, and white). Beach formal attire includes jumpsuits and tea-length dresses, with lace or metallic fabric adding elegance.
For women, beach wedding outfit ideas include formal long, high-low, or tea-length dresses, long or tea-length jumpsuits, and chunky heels. Clothing and accessories for Jamaica include 3-5 t-shirts or tank tops in breezy, breathable fabrics, 2-3 shorts or skirts, 1-2 nicer outfits (sundresses, button-down shirts), underwear for one week, and one pair of flip flops.
When choosing appropriate wedding attire, avoid wearing white, as it is only for the bride. Daytime essentials include t-shirts, camissoles, sarong, and shorts, as most people spend their time on the beach or by the pool. Sunscreen is expensive in Jamaica, so buy plenty before arrival.
When traveling to all inclusive resorts or backpacking trips, consider the beach wedding attire, as the weather is pleasant year-round and the environment is incredible. Beach weddings in Jamaica are typically more casual, so opt for a fun print, bright color, and shorter hemline.

What do you wear to a wedding in Jamaica?
Weddings these days are less traditional and so have fewer typical dress code dictates. Outside of formal and semi-formal, for example, expect to see: beachwear, casual, Caribbean chic, black, white, to name a few.
My recommendation is that couples communicate their expectations as clearly as possible to their guests. If theres no communiqué re:dress code, use the time of day and venue to guide you. Consider the sights, sounds, and temperatures that will surround you.
Regardless of what the dress code is, there are just two rules to wedding guest fashion: never wear white to a wedding (unless the couple requests that you do) and dont upstage the bride (you certainly dont want to be the victim of multiple side-eyes).
If the invite requests casual, perhaps for an outdoor wedding, dont be afraid of shorter hemlines like a midi dress or a knee length style; these can also work for a morning wedding.
What not to wear to a beach wedding?
Nice, short-sleeved shirts, such as polos, are permitted for men, as well as nice shorts (think Chinos) with a belt. In general, stick with lighter colors and/or bold prints, and absolutely avoid denim, cargo, swim shorts, and cotton T-shirts. This is also the only instance when sandals may be acceptable, but ensure your feet are well-manicured before considering an open-toe look.If not, wear a deck shoe or loafer, never sneakers.
Beach Wedding Attire Etiquette. While the formality of the dress code is often stated on the invitation, some couples might just request “beach wedding attire.” If thats the case, “Its always better to be overdressed than under-dressed,” advises Papageorge. “In the event that the invitation doesnt indicate formality, dress for a semi-formal event.”
Another important rule to remember is that this isnt a family outing at the beach—its a wedding. Leave the bathing suits and swim shorts at home, and if opting for sandals, make sure theyre dressier than your normal beachy flip flops. Sun hats are permitted, but remove them during the procession so as to not block the view of other guests.
Can you wear black to a beach wedding as a guest?
Consider Fabric and Length. Not all black dresses are created equal, says New York-based bridal stylist Jackie Avrumson. You can always wear black, no matter where you are, but it depends on how its executed, she says. Black is the most versatile and flattering color for any woman to wear. But because black absorbs heat, if you wear it to a beach wedding youll want to wear a light fabric.
If you are going to a less formal affair and your go-to color is black, check the length and the cut of the dress, says Avrumson. Black is super chic, but sometimes it will feel overdressed. You want the length and the fabric to be appropriate based on time of year and the location.
Keep It Festive. Black is unequivocally practical, but that doesnt mean the mid-length crepe dress you wear for work dinners is right for a wedding. If you put on your dress and you feel like you can still go to the office or youre ready for an interview, thats when its time to pick another one, says Avrumson. Depending on what the wedding calls for, you can wear a long or short black dress to a wedding and treat it like any other color.
Account for Tradition. In some cultures, black is less common for weddings. Certain cultures, such as Indian and Chinese cultures, tend to stay away from black because it represents being in mourning. You want to take an extra thought if you are attending a more traditional wedding to be respectful, says Avrumson. If you wear black to an event where its not traditional to do so, you may want to incorporate as much color as possible with accessories.
Can I wear navy blue to a beach wedding?
- Semi Formal or Dressy Casual: Ladies in cocktail dresses and gentlemen wearing button-down shirts with slacks
- Vacation Attire: Resort wear in the form of sundresses for women and aloha shirts with khaki pants for men
- Black Tie Optional: Formal attire, with ladies in long dresses in dark colors such as burgundy, purple, charcoal gray, navy blue and deep shades of green
- men will wear a dark suit and tie

Naturally, the attire you want guests to wear for your beach wedding should be based on the weather. Spring and summer are the perfect seasons for linen and other breathable fabrics, with short-sleeve choices ideal for both men and women. If strong tradewinds are forecast, consider closer-fitting dresses for the women (so as to avoid potential embarrassment) and tie clips for the men. Itll be really easy to decide on what your guests should wear depending on the season/weather forecast!
Whether you prefer super casual, formal or something in between, let your guests know what to wear for your beach wedding either via your invitation or on your wedding website where you include all of the details/information regarding your upcoming nuptials. Your guests will appreciate the help!
What is Jamaica’s cultural dress code?
Social etiquette in Jamaica is similar to those of the general West. In the resort areas it is not uncommon for people to walk around in swimsuits and cover ups. In the city, or in more formal settings such as restaurants, one is expected to be fully dressed. There is no general social or cultural etiquette that prevents revealing clothing such as short skirts or crop tops. It is very normal to see people dressed this way, especially due to the warm climate. It should be noted, however, that the men in Jamaica are very forward. As a woman, wearing revealing clothing will not go unnoticed by the men around you. It is common for men to approach you in order to comment on your beauty or attire and the male gaze is unavoidable. These encounters are generally not meant in an aggressive manner; however, it may be uncomfortable for someone who is used to more subtle attention.
Generally, there is no issue with drinking in public, however being publicly (and obviously) drunk is considered rude or antisocial. Subtle public displays of affection are also of no issue, hand-holding and a passing kiss is of no consequence, but anything more than that is not well looked upon.
