Daytime weddings are typically more casual, with lighter fabrics, festive colors, and less-formal attire being the norm. For women, a nice daytime dress, skirt, top, or jumpsuit is suitable, while for men, a well-tailored suit in a mid-to-dark neutral color like gray, blue, or charcoal is appropriate.
For a 4:30 pm wedding, it’s important to strike the right balance between day and evening attire. Formal attire, such as a cocktail or dressy afternoon dress for women and a dark suit for men, is expected. Black-tie weddings often take place later in the day and require formal outfits.
Accessory elements, such as jewelry, can enhance an outfit. For a fall outdoor wedding, use the hues of the season as inspiration for your look. For guests, floor-length gowns are traditionally required, but mid-length or knee-length hemlines are recommended for semi-formal attire. Black suits can be worn to formal weddings, but no dark or bold colors should be used.
For a beach wedding, consider wearing a knee-length or midi dress or maxi dress with flat sandals, a linen-blend suit or sports coat and trousers for masculine dressing. White tie attire is the most formal dress code, typically calling for floor-length gowns for ladies, a black dress coat with tails, and a lightweight sundress or midi dress with strappy heels or sandals.
For an afternoon wedding, a saree is an appropriate dress, and pastels are a great choice for any spring wedding. Men should consider light blue suits instead of the traditional black tie option.

What is the dress code for a 4 o’clock wedding?
The hidden dress codes. Everyone knows the golden rule: Dont wear white. Sometimes, though, when a wedding takes place in the summer, guests are drawn to their lineup of breezy ivory dresses as potential options. “I have a whole closet full of white dresses that dont look at all bridal,” shares one fashion editor. “But why wear one and potentially hurt someones feelings?” Many agree, but there is room to play with. “If it has a print on it or a motif that isnt too overwhelming,” one writer says, “then its fine.” Still, dont push the limits. “After wearing a cream dress to a ceremony, I was told by several people at the party never to wear it ever again to a wedding.” If the dress code is confusing to you, play it safe. “I never know what to wear to a wedding thats happening at 5 p.m. Do I wear a day dress or something more for the evening?” wonders one fashion editor. The staff suggests that if a wedding is taking place at 4 p.m. or 5 p.m., you should wear something that easily transitions from day to night; any ceremony after 6 p.m. should be strictly cocktail. What about the old rule that red is also off-limits? “I think red is fine, just dont show up looking like Jessica Rabbit,” says another fashion writer.
Paper matters. Its simple: RSVP by the date indicated on the invitation. If a date isnt provided, just reply with your answer as promptly as possible. And what if there isnt a response card? “Then the rule is that you should send your RSVP on your own stationary,” advises one editor familiar with Emily Posts Etiquette.
About that plus-one. Regarding plus ones, the entire staff agreed: Under no circumstances can you ever ask for one. “Youre essentially asking the couple to pay for an extra person,” says one writer. But the importance of plus-ones is at times underrated. “Im eternally the single girl, and just because I dont have a boyfriend doesnt mean I dont want to go with someone to a party,” says one writer. A beauty editor agrees: “For my upcoming wedding, I only have one rule—everyone gets a plus one.” And if a couple cant afford to invite so many guests, a good rule of thumb is to offer the option of a plus-one to at least everyone in the wedding party, which is usually made up of close friends and family.
What to wear to an afternoon wedding?
For guidance, look to a more relaxed version of a cocktail dress. Women should embrace wrap dresses, midi dresses or elegant jumpsuits. For men, if its a daytime wedding, a light sport jacket, button-down shirt and relaxed chinos fit the bill.
Is it still inappropriate to wear black to a wedding?
The Bottom Line. You can wear black to a wedding, as long as it’s not against the dress code. Depending on where the couple is exchanging vows, what season it is, and what time the wedding starts, black may or may not be the best color. If black makes you feel good, wear it!
What do you wear to a 4pm fall wedding?
What to Wear to a Formal or Black-Tie Optional Fall Wedding. According to Lisa Grotts, an etiquette expert, A formal fall wedding requires a man to wear a tuxedo or suit and a woman to wear a formal gown. Women do have wiggle room because a traditional cocktail dress can also work, or even a dressy pantsuit.
She further explains that if you read between the lines, it generally means that the wedding party will be wearing tuxedos and gowns, and while the couple would like for their guests to lean into these specific pieces, it is not a requirement. Patrickson also adds that short dresses are discouraged, and you should stick with at least a midi-length dress for this style of attire.
What to Wear to a Semi-Formal Fall Wedding. In general, semi-formal wedding attire is more relaxed than a black-tie dress code. For women, dresses and gowns dont need to be floor length (with the option to wear a midi or mini design), and for men, a tux should be avoided. This is also where you can pair flats and more casual footwear with your outfit, like chunky heels, heeled sandals, loafers, and derby shoes.
Is it OK to wear black to a 4 o’clock wedding?
Factor In The Wedding Partys Attire. Of course, you dont want to upstage the bride or blend in with the wedding attendants if either is wearing black. Although its non-traditional, some brides wear dark colors on their big day, and attendants are often in black attire for more formal weddings. I have beautiful brides wearing black wedding dresses, said Anastasia Stevenson, a destination wedding planner with Coastal Creative Weddings in Tybee Island, GA. It is perfectly acceptable and chic to wear black to evening, black tie, and winter weddings.
Ryncarz agreed that it is wise to gauge the attire of the wedding attendants. When wearing black to a wedding, keep the outfit in line with the dressiness of the bridal party and wedding as a whole, she said. As long as the event calls for a particular level of formality and you wont upstage the couple or the wedding party, its safe to wear black to the wedding.
Ask The Couple About The Attire. When in doubt, ask the couple. Even if you arent close to the bride or groom, ask someone you know, such as the mother of the bride or a wedding attendant. Doing so may encourage the couple to clarify and add more detail to their wedding website. Plus, you can attend with complete assurance that you wont be making a blunder.

The meaning of afternoon may seem simple. After all, the definition is in the name. However, the overlap between afternoon and evening can often lead to confusion.
There is no exact time frame for the transition from afternoon to evening to night. Rather, evening begins around the time the sun sets in most places or when the typical business day ends, which is 5:00-6:00 p.m. Additionally, time and the rising and setting of the sun vary depending on time zones and whether you live north or south of the equator. Because of this, afternoon and evening are loose measurements of time that can vary in their meaning and usage.
Afternoon – the time between 12:00 p.m. and 5:00-6:00 p.m.

Your weight loss shows, 6 lbs. is half a dress size! I had no success at all losing weight in my later 40s and 50s, but now in my 60s I’m at about my ideal-health weight and feel great. Calorie reduction didn’t work for me, but giving up carbs and a daily hour-long walk did. Because I have a tiny frame, I think I should carry less weight than the recommended BMI healthy weight, so I’m hoping to walk off another 10 lbs. Women with sturdier builds might need to be in the high end of their BMI range. The only problem with weight loss is that I’m having to part with most of my beloved wardrobe, everything is just enormous. I’m doing it gradually, as I can afford to replace things. Clothes can’t be sized down from an XL to a S/M. At least my footwear and accessories can stay. I would love some decluttering inspo🙂
