What To Wear To A Home Wedding?

This wedding guest fashion guide provides expert advice on what to wear and what not to wear for every dress code and season. Women should wear a formal, floor-length evening gown with jewelry, heels, and an elegant clutch. Men are required to wear a tuxedo with tails, a formal white shirt, and casual loafers or boat shoes.

For a casual dress code, dressy casual or business casual is the best bet. For daytime weddings, wear a button-down shirt, polo, relaxed pants (chinos, khakis), sports coat or blazer, and casual loafers or boat shoes. Beach weddings call for a flowing maxi dress, an elegant jumpsuit, or matching set, while evening wedding attire includes a muted tone or earthy color maxi dress and ankle or knee-high boots.

Do not wear white as a guest unless specifically stated on the invitation. Avoid wearing anything too casual, such as jeans, T-shirts, flip-flops, or white. Instead, wear a stylish pantsuit, jumpsuit, or romper that fits the formality level and vibe of the wedding.

For men’s wedding attire, consider the dress code, venue, and season. Be sure to disclose on wedding invitations that your dress code or “formal or black tie is optional.” Bring an umbrella, trench coat, overcoat, or beanie if it’s cold enough to wear a hat. Opt for light and bright clothing in colors like blues, pinks, and yellows.

What to wear to a home wedding reception?

If the groom is still wearing a tuxedo or suit, then definitely wear a suit and tie to the backyard wedding. If the groom has taken his wedding day look more casual, you should too. Dont wear a suit if the groom isnt, but dont assume casual means jeans and a t-shirt without getting more details. Casual could mean a collared shirt and slacks, it could be a sport coat or maybe even jeans.

Now if the groom says hes wearing jeans, ask what else hes wearing. Jeans and a sport coat is dressier than jeans and a t-shirt. If the groom is in fact wearing jeans and a tee, go for it and wear the same. Just make sure your clothes are clean and free of holes. As far as your t-shirt, select a neutral color without any writing or logo on it. If you dont have any plain t-shirts, select a polo shirt instead.

If you know the groom is wearing a tuxedo or suit to his backyard wedding, definitely wear a suit and tie to the ceremony.

4) Semi-Formal Wedding. Semi-formal might be the most common wedding dress code. Think date night at the nicest restaurant in your town. Men should definitely wear slacks and a dress shirt but they can choose if theyd like to wear a tie and sport jacket or not. Women should wear a nice dress, skirt, or pants.

5) Beach/Destination. An important factor in dressing for a beach wedding is the weather. Men can wear a nice linen shirt or a breathable button down with khakis or slacks. Women can wear a nice sundress or flowy skirt. Dont dress down too much just because youre on the beach, its still a wedding. Just remember to wear something that can withstand an ocean breeze and will be comfortable in hot weather. You may want to consider something that wont show sweat in case its an especially hot day.

6) Casual Wedding Attire. A casual wedding means you can wear something more comfortable and more similar to what you would wear on a normal day. Jeans, t-shirts, tank tops, flip flops, and sneakers should still be off-limits. Men can wear a nice pair of khakis and a collared shirt. Women could opt for a sundress, a nice skirt and blouse combo, or a jumpsuit.

What do you wear to an outdoor wedding without a dress code?

Still not sure? Your best bet is cocktail attire. Sure, you might be overdressed if it ends up being a more relaxed affair, but youll fit right in at a cocktail attire party, and (with the right accessories) can easily dress up for something on the more formal side.

Women should opt for a dress in a luxe fabric, such as silk. Wear a darker color for evening weddings or something brighter during the day.

Men should wear suits in either dark gray or black, which transition well between cocktail attire and formal events. Dont forget a tie.

If all else fails, ask the couple! Whether they intended to leave out the information or not, theyll be able to quickly sum up what you should wear to the event.

  • Sometimes I find it awkward because there’s no dress code specified at all. In fact this is most of the weddings I attend. Personally, I love to dress up so I will always go as dressy as I can, BUT, I’m pretty sure it is bad form to dress more formally than the bridesmaids or the mother of the bride. I love the 4 -inch heels you wear but that would make me into a towering awkward giant person on the dance floor so I’m always on the look out for a super-elegant kitten heel.

  • I’m from South Africa where weddings are fairly casual but I moved to Southern Italy 4 years ago and here they don’t have a dress code for weddings and everyone is expected to dress formal. This summer we have 5 weddings. I usually buy long flowy fitted chiffon skirts and mix and match them with various tops so I don’t need to buy 5 new outfits each year.
