In summary, there are various wedding styles to choose from, including black tie, formal, semi-formal, cocktail, mountain chic, and casual. Men should wear a dress shirt and suit pants, with optional ties and jackets. Women should dress elegantly in a shimmering cocktail dress, and glam accessories like rings and earrings are always appropriate.
For black tie events, gowns are the appropriate attire, while for formal events, suits are expected. For semi-formal events, outfits should fall somewhere between formal and casual, such as church, dinner, or job interviews. For barn weddings, a rustic and natural aesthetic can be channeled through a midi dress with a floral print.
White dress shirt under a tuxedo or suit jacket is acceptable, as long as it is not the main color. Boots or open-toe heeled shoes are generally better suited for fall weddings, but open versus closed-toe heels are generally better suited for indoor events.
For outdoor weddings, jeans, boots, a tough button-up shirt, khakis, loafers, and a sport coat are appropriate mountain casual attire. Casual attire is not acceptable, and designer ripped jeans are also not acceptable.
For spring weddings, pastels are a great choice, and men should consider light blue suits instead of traditional suits. Women should wear a gown at least past the knee and heels, as the bride and groom may have different preferences.

What to wear to a wedding on a mountain?
For Those Who Prefer a Masculine Style:A suit and tie or a dinner jacket and dress pants are still appropriate for a mountain semi-formal event, but consider adding a touch of the theme to your look. Earthy tones such as tans, browns, greens, and blues are great ways to give a subtle nod to the ambiance. Or, for more flair, consider a button-down shirt with a pine tree or snowflake pattern worn under a dinner jacket, paired with some nice boots.
For Those Who Prefer a Feminine Style:While a cocktail dress, skirt, and top, or jumpsuit are still the base of your look, think of ways that you can lean into the mountain feel. Consider a nice pair of booties, a mountain wedding dress, jacket with faux fur, flowy fabrics, turquoise jewelry, or a nice, knit sweater (especially if you get chilly as the sun goes down).
If the Invitation Just Says “Formal”. Formal or “black-tie optional” means just that: The event is formal, and while its appropriate to dress black-tie, its not necessary. If youre unsure which way to lean, chat with other guests and look up photos of the venue to gauge how fancy the event might be. When in doubt, always dress the more formal option because you can easily “dress down” by taking off a bow tie, letting down your hair, or leaving your jacket on a chair.
What do you wear in Montana?
SPRING IN MONTANA. One of Montanas most underrated seasons, spring can include late-season snowstorms, warm sunny days, rain and a welcome rebirth after the cold temperatures of winter. Combine that with wildlife watching opportunities, low-elevation hikes and snow-kissed mountains, and spring in Montana is nothing short of a great adventure. When exploring Kalispell in spring, youre well-advised to pack an array of clothing and gear to keep you comfortable, no matter what the weather brings. Must have items include layers (think flannel shirts and long-sleeve transitional tops), puffy vests, jeans/long pants, raincoats, hats, a beanie and a light packable down jacket. Top off your suitcase with water-repellant shoes (and/or hiking boots), sunglasses, SPF and chapstick.
Pro tip: Flannel passes as a dress shirt around here and is oftentimes the last layer you need for either taking a stroll or heading out to dinner.
SUMMER IN MONTANA. Montanas most-loved season, summer can bring its own assortment of weather moods. While the temperatures are comfortable and tend to be in the 70s and 80s, summer nights can cool down, which leaves you needing a cozy layer. Necessary summer items include tank tops, long-sleeve shirts or light sweaters, a jacket, light fleece, baseball caps or sun hats, shorts, sandals, hiking boots, water shoes, bathing suits/swimming trunks, SPF lip balm, sunglasses and sunscreen. And if youre planning on taking a horseback trail ride, be sure to bring closed-toe shoes with a heel (or cowboy boots) and long pants.

Hiking shoes with high cut and a sturdy sole, such as Garmonts Toubkal GTX or Vetta GTX;; Technical breathable base layer in contact with the skin (we suggest to avoid cotton ones, as they become heavy and dry too slowly when they get wet with sweat);; Long-sleeved shirt or jersey, to wear if it gets a little windy or cloud; Sweater or fleece: there are a lot of different kinds, but a good quality fleece has superior thermal insulation, guarantees acceptable transpiration and dries quickl; Windproof and waterproof jacket (also called “shell”): preferably light, because when folded it does not take up much space in the backpack;; Comfortable long trousers (no jeans or velvet ones because if it rains or simply by sweating they stick to the thighs and bother, thus limiting the movements) and preferably in technical material, which in case of rain can dry quickly and shelter from the wind better than natural fiber; Hat and glove; Hiking socks: there are various kinds, suitable for every situation. The light ones are advisable for simple walks or for a day hike, while the more robust and thick ones are preferable for more rigid climates. It is important that there are no seams near the fingers and that they are reinforced in the heel are; Cap for UV protection (in summer; Replacement shirt;; Overtrousers in case of rain.;
This is a quick guide on what to wear in the mountains, in order to not be surprised by sudden weather changes. In the mountains, however, in addition to technical clothing, it is also necessary to have the right equipment, starting with a good backpack. In the next article we will provide some useful tips about choosing the right equipment and prepare the backpack in the best way.
What is the mountain chic dress code?
Formal attire hardly exists in the mountain setting. Friends and family who love the outdoors may choose to have a mountain casual wedding. Formal attire for a guy might look like snazzy boots with jeans with a handsome button-up pressed shirt finished with a funky bolo tie. For a woman, it might be a simple flowy dress paired with cowboy boots — often a sound choice when unsure of what to wear to a mountain chic soiree.
When it comes to mountain chic attire and marriage ceremonies (and receptions), the level of informality can vary. Best check with the groom or bride to confirm if the nuptial dress code leans more toward the mountain “chic” or mountain “casual” side of the equation.
However, you may see the dress code on invitation as formal or cocktail which had different meanings, but formal and cocktail are now synonymous. What does this imply for guests? If the invitation specifies formal or cocktail attire, men should wear a nice dress shirt and suit pants, with optional ties and jackets. Women should wear a cocktail dress with elegant material, sparkles, and glam accessories like rings and earrings are always appropriate. Most important of all, remember to have fun with your mountain chic attire. Avoid casual tees or anything that makes you look untidy — but embrace clothing and accessories that demonstrate your passion for the wilderness and the outdoor life.
What to wear to a country wedding as a guest?
For women. Consisting of floaty silhouettes, floral prints, and light fabrics like lace, cotton and linen, boho-chic is a particularly popular outdoor wedding trend. Midi dresses are a good option, as they are smarter and comfier than shorter hemlines, and more practical than full-length styles which may graze the mud and grass. For women who prefer trousers, wide-legged jumpsuits are a roomy alternative, offering greater coverage and are sure to attract compliments. And in cooler temperatures, a smart blazer — preferably in a contrasting print, colour or texture — is a modern and effortless cover-up.
For men. Men should still wear a suit, but stay away from black and charcoal grey in favour of earthy colours to match the outdoor setting, like browns and greens. Patterns are also incredibly striking — tweed is simply made for the countryside, and offers a fantastic basis for a fashion-forward suit. Alternatively, the fabric can provide you with a statement piece for your outfit, like a tweed blazer worn with navy trousers, or vice versa. Florals are equally effective for male country wedding guests, and those who dont want to wear busy prints from top to toe could inject a small burst of colour with a flowery shirt or tie.
Country wedding guest shoes. Country weddings mean having to contend with surfaces like muddy grass and uneven cobbles, so its vital that your footwear is attractive, but also easy to move in.
What to wear to a wedding as a guest female?
Women wedding guests should wear full-length dresses, be it a ballgown, a sheath or an A-line dress. High heels are strongly recommended. Feel free to accessorize with opulent jewelry and even elbow-length white silk gloves.
How to dress like a cowboy woman?
This stylish cowgirl outfit brings to life a classic cowgirl feel with a cool personality far from warmth on other occasions, perfect for the spring weather. A white blouse with a devan jacket, blue jeans and the classic cowgirl hat form a classic look, bathing under the stars, with work boots. Best to be worn on Rodeo day or just a night out of town.
5. Graphic T-shirt, Camo Pants, Denim Jacket and a Deerstalker Hat.
The denim jacket finishes off this old-school style, bringing out the modern streetwear vibe to this traditional gear. It pairs a graphic tee and camo pants, which is traditional Western wear, but, in this case, it is a modern representation.
What colors for mountain wedding?
There is no perfect color palette but, when it comes to mountain weddings, forest green and natural earth tones are very hard to beat.
These colors evoke the feeling of being in nature and help create a relaxed and intimate atmosphere.
For your ceremony, consider using green garlands or potted plants as aisle markers.
For the reception, use green and brown table runners with natural looking centerpieces.
What do you wear to a cowboy themed wedding?
In the spring and summer, floral patterns and pastel colors make a great choice, while darker browns, leather, suede, and dark denim are better options for fall and winter Western weddings.
Alternatively, you can pair a skirt (or nice pair of pants) with a dressy blouse and a denim jacket. Choose a fringe jacket for extra Western flair.
Even with a Western wedding theme, its important to stay away from the color white or any colors similar to white, unless explicitly given instructions by the bride.
For the Guests: Jeans. A nice pair of clean, well-fitted jeans are often acceptable to wear to Western wedding. You can wear a dress shirt on top and pair it with a jacket or a vest as the season calls for.
What do you wear to a wedding in Montana?
Formal/Cocktail. The most common word you will see is “cocktail” over “formal”. The two used to have two different meanings but now are synonymous. So what should you wear? If the invitation states “formal” or “cocktail”, men can wear a nice dress shirt and suit pants while ties and jackets are optional. Women should wear a cocktail dress and there is no rule for length.
Check the weather forecast the day of.. Outdoor weddings can be unpredictable. Bring an umbrella and something to keep warm in case of inclement weather. For men, this will mean bringing a jacket and for women that may mean a long sleeve dress or a shawl to put over your shoulders when it gets cold.
What time of day is the wedding?. When the sun goes down, the mountain will get significantly colder. You may want to consider layering so that you can stay warm throughout the night. For men this could be a jacket and an undershirt and for women it could be wearing tights, long sleeves, or a shawl.

I’m soo depressed in my life because I’m in a relationship it’s been 4years but now we want to married but our family not want this because both of us don’t have any earning source.so I’m facing deep depression period in my life,i come to your website & see your articles that makes me happy & that give me possitive energy & courage.
My wedding dress was an A-Line and I never thought I’d like it! My advice, keep trying other styles. If you’re not 1million% sure if that’s the one, it’s not. You’ll find some that are cute and you like them but trust me, you WILL have that moment where you’re just in LOVE with it. You’ll start picturing yourself walking down the aisle, saying your vows, dancing the night away. I thought that classic “this is the dress!” moment was cliche and made up. It happened to me and I was almost literally knocked off my feet when I found the dress. The ones you tried on of course looked gorgeous on you but they weren’t “the one”. It will not only show on your face but your whole body and aura will just glow so bright! 😀 Keep looking!! Also. There might come a time where you get frustrated and can’t think from trying on so many dresses (if it comes to that) and you’ll think maybe you should just settle, or that maybe the perfect dress isn’t out there. But trust me, it is. If you happen to get overwhelmed, stop shopping. Go and take a breather for a day or two and just relax, then come back to it. It can get overwhelming but you’ll find the one. Try to keep in mind the reason for getting a wedding dress: You’re getting married to your best friend and soul mate!! <3 So happy for y'all <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
You look amazing! But A line is going to look a little different once you do get the implants out just keep that in mind! I think A line dresses look so beautiful but i have a very small chest so I feel like it doesn’t look good on me. I love the slit too because you are tall and the legs are just accentuated
I think the tight one shows your figure really well but the a line looks amazing maybe try a line with a leg slit to show of your long legs I also don’t want to upset you but I know you are having difficulty with your implants so if you find a dress you like and have to have them removed you may like how a diffent dress looks aftewards. There’s soooo many options all the dressed looked amazing try one with diffeent straps as well
I am so glad I saw this article! I am a longtime subscriber but I am finally getting to travel to Montana this July. First, I do not like Chacos sandals. The bed of the shoe is so hard it rubs my heel raw. My question is, are hiking boots necessary? I have tennis shoes and Magellan hiking sandals. Would they suffice? Not much use for hiking in Louisiana where I live. 🤷♀️
Hey there. Just found your website and have been perusal them non-stop for a week. We are leaving in a few days for a 10 day trip to Alaska. We will be flying in and traveling on the Alaska Railroad. Going from Georgia to Alaska where the weather looks like it is going to be in the 40s everyday will be a challenge. Any tips? I have learned so much . Thank you for all the info.
Thank you for the article. We are headed to Montana next month!!! And we love coffee in the morning! We’re staying at Flathead Lake and will be visiting Yellowstone, Glacier National Park and our first white water rafting!!! Do you have any other recommendations on what to do or where to eat (and get groceries)?
The reason it gets so chilly in the shade when it’s hot in the sun (especially in the mornings) is because of the lack of humidity. Same reason that, if done right, you don’t need A/C in the summer. I’ve lived in Wyoming for 8 years, so I’m well acquainted. I remember the first time I ever came out west, I was constantly adding and taking off layers because the temperature was always on the line between warm and chilly, even in July.
Nice to see a article this week. Went to Glacier two years ago and did not dress appropriately. Wore jeans but it was definitely shorts weather. I was too warm and had nothing cooler with me. I really should have known better since we vacation in Colorado at least once a year. Glad you did your research and packed correctly. What did your son (and friend) think of the vacation? Thanks for the article.
