In North America, most weddings are formal events, and men should dress in a tuxedo, dress shirt, dress pants, and a tie, especially for the ceremony. When arriving at reception, you can take off your suit jacket. For a non-suit casual wedding top, opt for a classic suit in a neutral color like navy or gray. For smart casual weddings, wear a button-up shirt, tie, and chinos.
For evening wedding attire, a charcoal or navy suit is always a good choice. There are four major levels of formality when talking about spring formal wedding attire for men: black tie, formal, cocktail, and semi-formal. Black tie requires a tuxedo, full-length pants, jeans, open-toe shoes, sandals, or flip flops. A soft baby blue suit is a timeless spring-suiting look for grooms.
For highly formal and special weddings, dress in black tie with certain requirements, such as a black tuxedo or dinner jacket. Men can also show personality through pocket squares or subtly entertaining cufflinks. For groomsmen, wear charcoal suits, white shirts, purple ties with green stripes, and green socks. Chinos or khakis are great options for casual weddings, especially those that take place in the summer. If you don’t own a suit or if the wedding is casual, wearing a clean pair of dark denim jeans is perfectly fine.
In summary, choosing the right wedding attire can be challenging, but there are several options to consider, including a classic suit in neutral colors, sport jackets, button-up shirts, and a combination of casual and formal attire.

What to wear to a wedding that isn’t a suit?
Fashion rules for a casual daytime wedding, on the other hand, are much different. You can never go wrong with a navy blazer, a blue button-down shirt or khaki pants for a casual wedding, says Virginia-based wedding style expert Monte Durham. And, for ladies, you can always opt for a dress with a nice neckline and simple accessories.
Understanding the wedding dress code is key for picking an appropriate outfit. In addition to the suggested attire, the time of day and the season of the wedding can give further fashion insight too. The season and location of the wedding are great indicators of what to wear, says Ranu Coleman, CMO of wedding fashion brand Azazie. For example, if its a beach wedding, thats an indicator that you shouldnt show up in a formal dress. Summer weddings usually lean towards shorter styles with lighter colors, for example, while a fall wedding caters to darker jewel-toned colors and richer fabrics like velvet and silk.
Does formal dress mean suit?
Variations in Formal Attire. There are various subcategories of formal dress, like business formal or wedding formal. Each variety can have distinctive characteristics. For example, a “business formal” event would typically require both men and women to wear suits of dark, simple colors. Meanwhile, “wedding formal” would focus more on dresses for women and a wider color palette.
Diving Into Black Tie. Lets see what makes black tie a distinct and different concept to formal attire.
Definition of Black Tie. Black tie is a very specific dress code, often reserved for the most formal of occasions. Its often employed at fancy and formal weddings, galas, dinners, proms, and balls. The history of black tie goes all the way back to the Regency period.
What is dressy casual for a male?
If you consider it on the scale of semi-formal vs. cocktail attire, dressy casual is closer to the semi-formal side than the cocktail one. Light colors and casual materials, like satin or linen, fit the code well. However, its also worth pointing out that the time of day may also affect the code. For instance, dressy casual for an evening may mean a suit, perhaps with an open shirt button to dress it down a bit. But when used for an event taking place earlier in the day, youll likely be fine in summer semi-formal wedding attire for males.
In short, dress casual isnt quite the same as business casual because theres a little more formality expected. But it also teeters around the semi-formal designation, with the code perhaps suggesting something a touch more casual for an event like a daytime wedding.
Dressy Casual and Weddings. Sticking with the wedding theme, lets say youve received an invite to a wedding that has a dressy casual code.
What is a formal outfit that is not a suit?
Dress shirts and trousers: Instead of a full suit, opt for a dress shirt paired with dress trousers or chinos. Dresses or skirts: For women, dresses or skirts paired with blouses or dress shirts can be a stylish alternative to a suit. Blazers: A well-fitted blazer can dress up any outfit and give it a more formal look.
Is it OK to dress casual for a wedding?
Casual. Casual attire will typically indicate that the wedding is being held outdoors or on the beach, meaning the event will be much more laid-back. With that said, jeans, shorts, tank tops, t-shirts, flip-flops, and sneakers are absolutely not appropriate unless specified by the couple. Women can wear a summer sundress or a floral patterned mini, with wedges or dressy sandals. Men should choose to wear dress pants or khakis paired with a collared shirt, with the option to also style their look with a tie or sports jacket.
Tropical or Destination. Since tropical weddings are usually humid and hot affairs, you should be mindful of what you choose to wear and lean into lightweight fabrics and airy silhouettes. Whats more, always err on the dressier side of caution, and if youre questioning whether your look is appropriate, check with the bride.
As with a casual wedding, women should look for cotton sundresses and nice sandals or wedges. If the wedding is being held outside and the weather is blazing, consider topping the look off with a sunhat. For mens attire, guayabera shirts are wonderful for the tropics. Known more commonly as Mexican wedding shirts, these short-sleeved, button-down tops usually have decorative square pockets and some form of embroidery.

Is it mandatory to wear a suit to a wedding?
So, how then, is this different from full formal? At a full formal wedding, you can still wear a more relaxed tuxedo, or a dark and classic formal suit, and be in line with the dress code. At semi-formal, the most formal attire you will choose is a suit and tie, and even then, you will want to relax the overall look of your suit a little, without getting slovenly. As weve mentioned, a very crisp pant and blazer combo with an appropriate dress shirt will also work. You can express some individuality and have some visual interest, but dont go full peacock and upstage the couple!
As far as colors go, at semi-formal you will have the freedom to move away from charcoal and navy, if you wish to, and instead, pick a smart option that is appropriate to the venue, season, and time of day. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, there is no reason not to wear charcoal or navy, just know that youre not tied to these colors at semi-formal level.
To help you picture the difference, lets take a quick look at the dress options open to female attendees. In a full formal wedding, dresses will never venture higher than the knee (tea length) and are usually full length, and if pants are worn, a very sharp pantsuit is the only choice. Heels are kept very low. While true cocktail dress codes are a little different from semi-formal, a cocktail length dress (shorter than the knee) is appropriate at a semi-formal wedding, heels can be higher, and other smart non-dress options will be acceptable.
Is it OK to not wear a suit jacket to a wedding?
How Formal is the Wedding?. Usually, weddings are considered formal events requiring its guests to wear a suit jacket, but thats not always the case.
Maybe you know that the wedding you are attending is supposed to be a very intimate event, with only a few close friends and family members being invited.
These kinds of weddings tend to be less formal, as most of those in attendance know each other very well. In this case, youcan probably wear an outfit without a suit jacket, but…
Is Wearing a Suit Uncomfortable?. When we are talking about comfort at Nathon Kong, we are talking about two things: how you feel about a suits fit, and how you feel emotionally when you wear a suit jacket.
What should a casual man wear to a wedding?
Casual wedding attire allows men to dress down, trading in the dress pants for chinos, going for unlined cotton jackets, or even holding off on the jacket altogether. Sometimes a well-tailored waistcoat and a nice button-up shirt with a pair of slim chinos is perfectly acceptable.
For outdoor and beach weddings, the casual factor can be turned up, paving the way for some smart tailored shorts and a classic polo shirt. In some cases, casual dress code settings are perfectly suitable for a slightly more elevated cocktail look, giving you an elegant style that can be relaxed with some casual touches.
Cocktail vs. Smart-Casual. For those laid-back settings & occasions, a casual wedding dress code branches into two popular styles: cocktail and smart casual.
How casual is too casual for a wedding?
Dont go too casual. Even if the wedding has a more low-key dress code, I promise you: It is not that casual. Meaning no sweats, shorts, jeans, T-shirts—you get my point. If you have to choose between being underdressed or overdressed, its always better to be overdressed, Swann explains.
Weddings these days have fewer and fewer fashion rules than in decades past, which can be great, but also makes things a tad more complicated. Many of todays brides are passing on traditional gowns in favor of elegant pants or jumpsuits, the occasional groom skips the typical black tux for a pastel suit, and even bridesmaids are ditching the cookie-cutter dresses for something they can wear over and over again. This means guests also have just as much freedom with their styles.
But before you whip out any outfit and call it a day, there are a few things to remember while getting dressed in order to still be respectful of the ceremony and the people getting married. Some of the rules are pretty straightforward and easy to follow (e.g., what colors to avoid), while others require a little more outfit planning—like figuring out what the heck beach-formal attire means.
To make sure you really nail it on the big day (well, not your big day, but you know what I mean), we tapped Elaine Swann, lifestyle and etiquette expert and founder of The Swann School of Protocol, to give us the low-down on some spoken and unspoken fashion rules.
📹 5 Ways To Wear A Suit Without A Tie | Casual Suit Outfit Ideas | Men’s Fashion
Wearing a suit without a tie–or wearing a suit casually–is a high-risk endeavor. Done right, it can be super chic. Done wrong?
Great article, thank you. As always, all the looks are great but the turtleneck look is my favorite. It has the perfect vibe, simple, yet elegant. The article is also timely as spring is around the corner and garden parties, etc. are not far behind and I need to start digging out my linen outfits. Thank you again. Cheers.
You don’t know how much I wait for your uploads. Thank you for making my day. Now the outfits… Outfit #1: A classic way to wear a suit without a tie. You absolutely CAN’T GO WRONG with this type of look. Simple, elegant and timeless. On a side note: I like how you chose to wear a pair of tassel loafers with this outfit, lending in the more casual vibe. Outfit #2: My favourite look. I love the idea of wearing a turtleneck with a suit, always provides that sophisticated, elegant and yet casual vibe. Love the pocket square too; it’s different and not in a gaudy way, but a very stylish and aesthetic way. Love the double monk straps too, the perfect shoe for this type of look. Outfit #3: A nice summer look, very simple and yet stylishly elevated. I adore the watch! Outfit #4: This look is distinct, it’s expected and unique at the same time. I like the bold shirt with the suit, a great way to stand out from the crowd. I love the pocket square as well, but the one thing that I dislike about this look are the shoes. You could do better on the shoes (for your sky high style standards). Outfit #5: This is my second favourite look. Never knew you could dress down the double-breasted suit so easily, and yet keep it so simple. It takes actual guts to bend those style rules and wear a pair of white sneakers with a double-breasted suit, but you do it beautifully.
Great quality as usual Brian! Wearing a suit without a tie and making it look right is not an easy task, but you nailed it, and in a nonchalant way (sprezzatura, as we would say in italy)! I particularly appreciate the understated boldness of the final look! Finally, congratulations on reaching 100k subs, you deserve it more than anyone else! Up to the next!
Well done bravo ! This is the best article I have seen on Youtube to date about how to tastefully, sartorially and creatively wear a suit without a tie. There is another famous YouTube website that should be taking pointers from you on how to perform this task successfully. My 2 favorites outfits are look 2 brown suit with turtle neck and look 3 light grey fresco spring/summer. I ordered the fresco light grey which is very light weight and wrinkle resistant.
I do like the turtle neck sweater and suit look. I prefer this style with a three piece suit. I always wear a tie with a suit but I have no problem sans tie with a blazer or sports coat. A good touch is how you recommend certain watches to enhance the overall look of the outfit. Unmissable website for the well dressed.
Your JLC reverso in pink gold, Omega Speedmaster and your VC traditionnelle in pink gold make me so jealous ;-; I’m an 18-year-old guy and you clearly represent the way I would dress (except jeans, I don’t know why but I don’t like jeans on me) if I had the money (studying computer science right now, don’t have the time for a side job :/) Thanks for your articles!
Nice article. You’ve got some really good ideas. My only comment, and it’s simply one man’s opinion; is that I don’t like the look of white sneakers with a suit, especially a double breasted suit. Anyway, just a thought. Thanks for taking the time to put together the article and for sharing your style ideas.
I love you turtleneck and brown gingham shirt looks, they always look so great. the white sneakers look works I just don’t like it for me but I have to say that it works well for you. However, the t-shirt look is really odd, I feel like the fit of the jacket looks off, it makes you look like your jacket is too big, I think t-shirt are too thin to be worn under and suit and in general I think that tailored jacket require a collar (turtleneck or shirt) don’t you think ? great looks otherwise as always
Great looks 1 through 4. The last look with sneakers don’t agree. Sneakers with a sports jacket and jeans or casual pants yes. Double breasted suit only with oxfords or formal slip on or high end loafers. Imagine that an old guy by way of Brooklyn New York / Jersey in his sixties giving a top notch guy such as yourself fashion advise, oh well go figure. Keep up the good work your presentations are exceptional. Best to you.
I like your articles and you seem like a rather pleasant person that does know what they’re talking about, but with the fifth one I get what you were meant with the not having a pocket square and I understand the justification, but I think that it would have looked quite nice, especially as it would mean that you would have three elements of white, which is something which I’ve noticed that having a few white accents, as long as your shirt is white, tends to look good in certain circumstances. To be clear I’m not meaning any sort of ‘Just keep adding things’ idea, like you said about in the mistake that everyone makes at some point article, I just think that one thing would have finished the look nicely. With the last one also I’d wear white converse boots, I just like converse though(only pair of trainers I own that aren’t for exercising in). They’re all still good outfits though.
Some people can pull off the Jerry Seinfeld suit with sneakers look, but not many. Then you go and make the suit double breasted and leave it unbuttoned. That’s a bit overboard for me. I feel like its absurdity for the sake of absurdity. But that’s just me. My opinion certainly isnt fact. Cheers, mate!
Too much emphasis on the BRAND NAMES of the Suits, Watches and accessories. Brand name of suits, shirts, shoes etc. have nothing to do with STYLE. Expensive Suits, can be made to look Cheap if one wears or wrongly mixes colors and fabrics. For example no mention its made of button down shirts and whether they can add or taken away from suit.
