What does a January wedding look like?
Seasonal Flowers. For a winter wedding in January, some of the most popular floral colors we see are hues are white, cream and ivory for a frosty touch. We recommend choosing flowers that are also in-season during this time such as white roses, tulips, peonies and gardenias. You can also add in some pops of color by incorporating a few hydrangeas, dahlias or even some greenery and succulents.
Warm Accessories. With the cooler temperatures that come in January, choosing the perect accessories can not only help keep you warm, but are great for styling your wedding dress as well. A faux fur shawl is easy to layer and take off when you head indoors for your reception. We also love a warm teddy coat, suede jacket or even some stylish mittens for you and your bridal party!
Party Favors. Winter is the season of giving, and what better way to do that than with some great seasonal party favors for your guests? You can choose something warm and cozy that they can use throughout the winter like a fuzzy blanket or slippers. Or go with something a bit more flavorful like hot chocolate spoons, maple syrup or your favorite fudge.
Do I need to wear tights to a winter wedding?
How to Style a Winter Wedding Guest Outfit. Dressing for winter weddings can be a bit tricky because you want to look fashionable and put together, while also staying warm. My go-to pieces for achieving this are tights and outerwear.
During the cooler months, I will typically wear tights with any maxi dress I wear, as long as it doesnt have a slit. Ill also pair them with shorter dresses if I think they look chic together. And as I mentioned above, if Im wearing a true mini dress during the wintertime, I will always opt for tights! This pairing instantly creates a classic look, plus youll be happy to have a light layer on your legs.
For outerwear, there are a few options. First, you can try to find a style that mimics the dress youre wearing. For example, you could pair this long black coat with a long black dress. However, this isnt always possible and it doesnt work as well with shorter dresses. For these circumstances, Id recommend pairing your dress with a cape coat or a shorter, more formal coat. Cape coats are wonderful because they are so easy to toss over your shoulders. This black cape is timeless and I love this fur collar swing coat. Lastly, while theyre a little harder to find, a cropped faux fur coat is a great piece to complete a winter wedding guest outfit. This one and this one are my two favorites at the moment.

What are the best colors to wear to a winter wedding?
Metallic tones such as gold, silver, and bronze, also work well for winter weddings.Pro tip from wedding planner, Karen Brown: If youre attending a winter wedding, dress in warm colors like burgundy, brown, purple, gray, and green.
Its always important to dress appropriately as a wedding guest, and in many cases, it all comes down to being able to decipher the events dress code based on the invitation or whether its an daytime or evening reception. However, when youre attending a winter wedding, you also have to contend with cold weather, snow, and ice. Given the season, you may have to tweak your usual wedding attire to include heavier fabrics, richer colors, and clothing styles that provide a little more coverage for added warmth.
Before deciding how the season will affect your clothing choices, you should make sure that you understand the wedding’s dress code. Consult the invitation, which will usually make it clear how guests are expected to dress. That way, you won’t dress too formally or casually for the event.1.
- If the invitation says “White Tie”, the wedding has an extremely formal dress code. Women should wear floor length evening gowns with long gloves, while men are expected to wear a tuxedo with long tails, a white vest, and a black bowtie.
- If the invitation says “Black Tie”, women can wear a floor length evening gown or a dressy cocktail dress. Men should wear a traditional tux with a cummerbund and bow tie.
- If the invitation says “Formal” or “Black Tie Optional,” women can wear a floor length dress, a formal cocktail style dress, or dressy separates. Men can wear a traditional tuxedo or a dark suit, white shirt, and tie.
- If the invitation says “Dressy Casual” or “Semiformal,” women should wear a cocktail dress or a dressy skirt and top. Men should wear a suit.
- If the invitation says “Festive Attire,” you can have a little more fun with your outfit. Women can wear a cocktail dress in a bold color and pair it with fun accessories, such as a cute hat. Men should wear a suit, but pair it with a fun tie in a bold color or pattern.
Can you wear bare legs to a winter wedding?
I think the perfect winter wedding outfit should always include a beautiful coat. It gives your outfit the smart factor, adds elegance AND keeps you warm. I really feel the cold and simply cannot endure cold legs and feet for hours, so when it comes to winter weddings I would always try and have my legs covered. Jumpsuits and tailored trousers would be the obvious choice but I struggle to find flattering tailored trousers so I tend to stick with dresses. However wearing dresses in winter leads to another fashion conundrum. Tights…my arch nemisis. When I even think about having to wear tights, memories of my school days come flooding back. Days spent itching, yanking, laddering and generally loathing my school tights. I seem to have passed this loathing onto my girls, as neither of them will wear tights and would both rather freeze in their socks and school skirts in the winter and who am I to argue?!
However, sometimes, there just isnt any other solution. Aside from the freeze-factor, fake tanned, bare legs at a winter wedding are a bit of a no-go zone for me. Come to think of it, so are bare shoulders and sheer tights. Remember I am talking about my hang ups here. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wearing sheer tights if you know what you are doing, but I dont, so I tend to avoid them altogether for fear of getting it wrong. However if you are happy to go nude, opt for matt over gloss and a make sure they match your skin tone perfectly. There is also nothing wrong with baring your shoulders, but I would always try to cover my arms at a winter wedding. It just feels a little more demure. A little tip, if you have a beautiful dress with short sleeves, remember you could always pop a simple crew knit jumper over the top in the winter. I have always found the J Crew Tippi sweater to be the perfect ‘smart jumper.
So having narrowed my options down to a dress, black opaque tights and a smart coat, black shoes, a black dress (that I would wear again) and a bright coat seemed like the natural outfit choice. I always feel safe in black and I think the goal of a wedding guest is to look sleek and appropriate. For me, black ticks those boxes and you can easily add splashes of colour with your accessories and/or your coat.
Can I have bare legs at a winter wedding?
Wear tights to a winter wedding if you don’t want your legs to be cold. Would you rather not wear tights because you can’t find any that don’t rip or because they’re not your style? Go barelegged. If it’s winter, the wedding will probably be indoors. If not, wear your parka and ear muffs. Etiquette be damned. PSA: Don’t wear tights and your shoe choice will be easier. There are only a few formal shoes that look good with them.
