What Your Engagement Ring Says About Him?

The engagement ring is a significant decision for both the groom and the bride, as it represents their undying commitment to each other. It is an outward expression of love and commitment, with various types of rings available. A woman’s engagement ring also says a lot about her personality, as it reflects the kind of person her other half thinks she is.

An engagement ring can signify a commitment to a long-term relationship, a promise to be faithful, loyal, and dedicated to each other. A promise ring is another way a man may give a woman a ring as a promise of a future engagement. A classic engagement ring is a singular stone set in a gold, silver, or platinum band, and a sign that the person who wears it is a planner.

The shape of the engagement ring reveals about the couple’s values and approach to life. A round stone symbolizes traditional values when it comes to love and romance, and these brides are thoughtful and dependable. Some people believe that a man shows his love more for his would-be bride by splurging on a giant diamond engagement ring, while women also tend to compare the rings to fashion.

In conclusion, the engagement ring is a symbol of your undying commitment to your significant other, and understanding what it says about you can guide you towards finding the ideal sparkler that matches all your expectations. By considering factors such as your personality, commitment, and the type of ring you choose, you can create a unique and meaningful engagement ring that speaks to your love and commitment.

Does the woman buy the man an engagement ring?

Can my partner and I both contribute to the engagement ring?. There are no rules that dictate who should pay for an engagement ring, so couples should feel empowered to do what works best for them and their relationship. More specifically, if youre partner cant afford the ring you love, and youre okay with contributing a few extra dollars, dont be afraid to offer to help. Conversely, if you cant afford your partners dream sparkler, gently bring up the conversation and see if they would be willing to help pay for it or if theres another ring they like that fits within your budget.

Does only one person get an engagement ring?. Gone are the days when one person is expected to receive an engagement ring. If you and your partner would like to propose to each other, lean into it and plan the ultimate joint proposal you both will love. Its a lovely way for each of you to declare your love and commitment to your relationship.

Can I ask my partner to buy a specific diamond carat size?. This answer depends on your partners budget. If theres a certain carat size that you love, and your soon-to-be fiancé can afford it, you should definitely share your preferences with them. However, if the carat size you desire is way out of budget, consider other alternatives. For example, think about opting for a lab-grown diamond ring, which is both a sustainable and affordable alternative to mined stones. You may be able to get the carat size you want, within the budget your significant other has allocated.

What does your choice of engagement ring say about you?

What does a diamond shape say about your personality?. The diamond shape you choose for your engagement ring says a lot about your personality. For example, a round cut diamond signifies tradition, while a pear-shaped diamond represents creativity and individuality.

An emerald cut diamond symbolizes elegance and sophistication, while a princess cut diamond represents modernity and boldness. The diamond shape you choose for your engagement ring should reflect your personality and style.

What is the most flattering diamond shape?. The most flattering diamond shape is subjective and depends on the individuals style, hand shape, and personal preference. However, round-cut diamonds are the most popular and versatile diamond shape.

They offer a classic and timeless look that suits almost any style and hand shape. Round-cut diamonds also have the most sparkle and brilliance, making them a great choice for someone who wants a traditional and elegant engagement ring.

What does an engagement ring signify?

An engagement rings meaning to a woman is that it is a public symbol of love, commitment, and a promise of marriage. In addition, it represents her partners love for her, the rings ability to symbolize their relationship and its future, how it will look on her finger, and sometimes the cost of the ring.

Ok, so with the mini answer in place, lets look at possibly one of the most important meanings of an engagement ring to a woman.

Love and commitment from her partner. These are the two main things a woman looks for when receiving an engagement ring. The cost of the ring is not as important as its meaning. So, if you are on a budget, dont let that stop you from popping the question! A simple but beautiful engagement ring can mean just as much to a woman as an expensive one.

Do couples pick engagement rings together?

Making the decision to get married together has also led 75% of couples to choose an engagement ring together, with 28% of these couples saying both people were ‘very involved in the process. Gone are the days of shopping for an engagement ring on your own—this 100-year tradition seems to be at an end.

This is where our ‘hand in hand approach to design becomes essential. The marked shift in consumer behaviour towards collaboration means that every ring we create starts with both halves of a couple.

No matter who comes into the consultation room, our design process ensures that both the person proposing and the person being proposed to have a role to play. The collaboration can range from hints, to subtle discussions, to joint decisions to fully engaging in the process together. But the bottom line is, no one feels on their own.

What is the most desired engagement ring?

The round-cut diamond is consistently the most popular engagement ring shape, says Shannon Delany-Ron, CMO for online ring retailer James Allen, noting that its appearance is timeless, versatile, and provides plenty of sparkle. A round-cut is cone-shaped to maximize light return through the top of the diamond and looks stunning in every type of setting. You cant beat a classic (yet).

Hot on the heels of our #1 stone shape is oval-cut stones, having grown 2% to 23%. To what do we owe this rise in status? Unsurprisingly, celebrity wearers have had an impact. While Blake Lively was one of the first A-listers to sport an oval engagement ring in 2012, other stars like Hailey Bieber, Ariana Grande, and Kourtney Kardashian have recently accelerated the trend.

Additionally, popular styles such as the Toi and Moi and East-West settings (the latter involves turning a stone 90 degrees for a slight variation on tradition) require more than a round stone for maximum impact. Speaking of impact: oval-cut stones are known for their ability to create the illusion of longer fingers and appear larger than their carat size thanks to their curves.

Is engagement ring a symbol of love?

Engagement rings hold a special place in the realm of romantic gestures. These exquisite pieces of jewelry symbolize love, commitment, and the promise of a lifelong partnership. An engagement ring is a tangible expression of a couples dedication to one another, marking the beginning of a beautiful journey towards matrimony.

The tradition of presenting an engagement ring dates back centuries and has evolved over time. The ancient Egyptians are believed to have initiated the custom, using rings made from reeds and other natural materials to represent the eternal circle of love. The Romans later adopted this practice, exchanging iron rings as a symbol of their betrothal.

However, it wasnt until the 15th century that diamond engagement rings gained prominence. Archduke Maximilian of Austria is credited with starting the trend by proposing to his beloved Mary of Burgundy with a diamond ring. This event sparked a fascination with diamonds, forever cementing their place as the quintessential gemstone for engagement rings.

How do engagement rings work for guys?

Many men choose to wear their engagement ring on the ring finger of the right hand. Others may even choose to wear it as a necklace strung from a simple chain. However you may want to wear it, the consensus is that there are no rules – you can be as traditional or unique as you want.

Men’s engagement rings are just as much an expression of individual taste and personality as women’s engagement rings, and there are the styles to match. Rings can be crafted in any of the same precious metals, with detailing and design characteristics spanning from unique to traditional. Men’s engagement rings can even feature gemstones.

Our Belkin is a classic style platinum band that has a flare for the modern found in its baguette center stone. Or have a bit of mixed metals with our Edo, a simple white gold or platinum band, hugged on the outer edges by a rose gold border.

No matter the traditions of engagement rings, modern times are fully embracing the practice of men receiving and wearing engagement rings with all the level of individuality and personal meaning engagement rings are known to carry.

Who usually buys the man’s engagement ring?

Tradition has it that each person pays for the other persons ring. So in a traditional wedding, the groom or his family would pay for the brides ring, and the bride or her family would pay for the grooms ring.

  • I’m a feminist, and I LOVE jewelry. I have ZERO SHAME in expecting the engagement ring to be worth 2-3 months of the guy’s salary. It has nothing to do with being a gold digger. It has to do with me being old-school – that is the etiquette rule, and the ring being worth 2-3 months of his salary shows his commitment to me.

  • It’s so important to have a partner that you are on the same page with if you’re going to be getting married, but when this is the dynamic/situation that’s going on then you can’t even begin to have that conversation. I hope she’s realised her worth and otw out of that relationship! We need to be our own besties sometimes to do what’s right for ourselves.

  • I’ve been married twice and each of my engagement rings cost $500. The first was a 1/4 carat, very included marquise cut diamond from JC Penney, back in 1994. I picked out the EXACT ring I wanted, had to propose to him, got cake smashed in my face, and was divorced within two years. The second time, he initially proposed with a $200 necklace. He said “Ouch!” when I picked out a $2,500 ring with a blue sapphire and diamonds on the band (this was in 2000), and settled on a small sapphire ring with two diamond chips and a plain gold band. He got salty when I bought myself a diamond anniversary band. We lasted almost 20 years but not without lots and lots of drama and financial abuse. I came out on top and got the house, the cats and the kid and regained my sanity. If I were to marry again, I would have to say he needs to have a ring ready, in my size, and I won’t be the one to propose. 😆 Also, prenup for the win! I have enough assets now that it’s the only way. But I do want to be able to visit my partner in the hospital and considered part of the family if something happens to him.

  • I dont think people actually think about what marriage is and why they would want to get married. Other than a milestone or you were told to do it. why get married? Personaly, i think about marriage as a business transaction with love placed over top. You are combining assets and gaining specific rights through that union. This is why regardless of religion you have to register with the state. So unless i am am building a life with someone where the benefits out weigh the risks of that legally binding partnership. ( Ie owning a home/ property, having children, medical care, insurance) Im not interested. If i do get married bet your bottom dollar i will have a wedding bc i like parties and fancy dress, i like jewelry so i would want a ring with gems instead of diamonds and all that. I couldn’t imagine signing my autonomy to someone who doesnt want to make me happy and has shown he is constantly inconsiderate.

  • The rule of thumb in the engagement ring biz, is it should cost TWO MONTHS of his PAY. So, if a man makes 5,000 per month, it should be 10,000, if he makes 50,000 a month, it should be 100,000, and so on. In 1997 I chose a CHEAPER ring down in the jewelry district and it was not the best grade, and it was $2,000 then. I’d guess that a high quality 2 carat or more ring would be at least 8 grand to 20 grand.

  • I’m with you. I also do not like jewelry. I wash my hands so many times a day and I don’t like the feel of jewelry on my body. Another thing to consider is in this rough economy. Walking around in my neck of the woods with an expensive ring really puts you in danger. I switched to a cheaper purse that’s Artie leather Crossbody and small. I had a guy try to steal my wallet out of my purse and it was leather strapped to my purse so I got lucky. no more designer purses or anything that’s going to make me a target. 😢

  • I don’t believe in asking men on dates, proposing, certainly not buying the engagement ring!! Even if the woman tells him exactly what she wants, he should at least pick it up. That’s about effort more than anything. The least he can do to show he loves you is buy the ring you took time to customize. These long term relationships, afterwards they usually marry the next person within a year of being with them. That long relationship was what they didn’t want then they find what they want and lock it down immediately. And, if the long term couple do get married they usually get divorced in a few years if it lasts that long

  • I dated a guy for a couple of years over a decade ago. He made decent money but asked me if I would be fine with a ring from Kmart. He had money to spend on his expensive toys but not me. He was also a hobosexual, and I paid for far more than my fair share. It’s disturbing how many men would let you “keep” them. Most definitely think that they are the prize!! I’m so happy that I dodged that nightmare!! He would have ruined me financially.

  • We appreciate that you skim these first, so that we can discover the extra details with you, once you post and start reading them. It reminds me of hanging out with my best friend from highschool years ago, and we’d read articles to each other for the first time to get honest reactions about them with each other, heh. (Especially about relationship stuff) That was always fun. Also happy to hear that you reached out to your agent to get back into writing again. Looking forward to updates on that over time. ✍️📚👍

  • Hi Melanie, I wanted to know if you could do a review of Double Jeopardy with Ashley Judd? I love your movie breakdowns and that was one of the first movies I watched that shows how dangerous men could be. I was a child when I saw it, but it stuck with me ever since. Love your articles and thank you for all you do. You and others have inspired me to make my own little PSAs about decentering men on my website. I started it to show my AI images of Black women but I include decentering men tips too. Keep up the good work!👍🏾

  • I think my favorite rings were from my 2 friends. The groom’s grandfather was a dentist and the family still had some old gold fillings that had been pulled out, so that’s what his ring was made out of. And the brides ring was made from melted down silver dimes from I think the 1910’s. Such an interesting story behind them! I like the unique rings but I’d also be happy with a big gold band just because I like gold and think it’s very pretty

  • This whole story reminds me that men don’t believe in the sunk cost fallacy, but women do. Out of the two, she’s the only one that factors the years they spent together and the sacrifices/efforts she’s made as contributions that should be reciprocated and invested into. He doesn’t, and most likely never will.

  • Still subscribed; two cross country moves should either get an honorable breakup reimbursing some of her costs or an enthusiastic suitor. $900 is peanuts when you look at the cost of household goods and discretionary purchases. My books, art supplies, and vet bills for my teenaged cats laugh at this $900 for an engagement ring, though by price it sounds like the stone is lab-created or alternative.

  • I’ve heard of people saying no to rings and doing bracelets or some other form of jewelry. I think one woman even wore her ring on a chain around her neck precisely because she didn’t like wearing rings but she wanted something physical to represent her commitment to her partner. So there’s precedent for skipping the ring and doing something else. Me? The only way I’d bu the ring would be if I was the one dropping to one knee and proposing (and I think it’d have to be to another woman because I don’t imagine many men would appreciate being the recipient). Very unlikely to happen anytime soon.

  • Regardless of who is right or wrong, or in some cases, if someone is cheating or if the other person just constantly worries he/she is – the answer is to break up. Bc one of them deserves better and the other is ruining it. It is not important to figure out which, bc either way, the answer is NOT COMPATIBLE. She needs to stop gambling. Sunk cost fallacy. Her investment is gone, she can’t get it back. I’m not sorry to say that if someone keeps doing this, they are deflating their value to the next inevitable man. Willing to settle = low value. That said, other than the splitting ring cost and moving for him twice, it is actually totally possible (theoretically) that he is the one holding on when she is literally exhausting to him. Either way, he doesn’t like her for who she is. They are both wrong here. And who she is a someone who wants things that make me cringe. If a guy wanted a big wedding, I would consider that we should break up bc socially validating ceremonies that literally mean nothing most of the time make me itchier than big jewelry does.

  • I live in Germany and you rarely find these huge engagement rings here. Usually we just have a simple gold band that is sensible 😅 I think it is also very German that a lot of the people just marry because of taxes. But I have to say that you can find some men, especially the educated ones, that want to take on more responsibility in parenting and household. But of course it usually isn’t equal. And I also met a lot of men who still have the mindset of the 1950s even though they are in my age (40s) I am single and I am tired of dating so if I find a man who gives me respect and cherishes me it’s cool but otherwise nope 🤷

  • If you think you’re “possibly au-” just start connecting with our community. Most of us are pretty welcoming 💖🤗💖. Even if you aren’t, we are always happy to have strong allies and we respect self dx. Don’t let imposter syndrome get you like it’s done to many of my friends. I will say that I relate to most of what you describe and I have an official dx. That’s not to say these aren’t all human experiences, it’s just a little different flavor/flare. Joining a free online support group for this, helped me 1000%. ASC Colorado accepts people from outside of CO and one of my friends is a facilitator, so they would accept you if you don’t see another that piques you interest. If you can get some decent ear plugs and light sensitive glasses, it might help A LOT. Wear gloves and masks when you need to touch weird or smelly things. I don’t want to overwhelm you, just give a few tips in case it helps 💗. Big hugs to you on your self exploration. You’re perfect the way you are and society wasn’t really made with humans in mind. Don’t be embarrassed to accommodate yourself. 💖💖💖💖

  • And this is why I will die on the hill for universal basic income for EVERYONE Because then it wouldn’t matter if mothers choose to stay at home and raise their children. They’d still be getting paid. As would everyone who’s incapable of working (like people with chronic illnesses or disabilities) Either that or the things we need to live should be a hogan right and totally free. Food, water, shelter, housing, Healthcare and utilities.

  • My whole young adult life, I was led to believe an engagement ring is like ‘insurance’ for in the event that you get divorced, you can sell it and get a wad of cash to help you re-boot your life. FALSE. 😂 They say a “diamond is forever” because that’s how long you’re gonna spend looking for someone to buy it for even a fraction of what you paid. Guy at the pawn shop was like “best I can do is $50”

  • U are right Melanie, I wondered why American women are so obsessed about marriage because it is almost unexisting in any European country I lived in. It doesn’t benefit u in any way, nor financially ( we earn the same money as men) or socially. Sometimes it is more benefitial to be a single parent on paper even if u are in relationship with father to your child. You have priority in the queue for kindergarten, often additional financial benefits.

  • Personally if I were to get engaged or married I don’t want a diamond or fancy engagement ring. I’m not a jewelry person & at most I would want a decent wedding band (only to signal to other dudes I am not available to them). I would instead ask that my future spouse put something towards the house or even better ***show up***. Be at home more than most men are (the joint household isn’t going to be a man cave with a locked down female servant, nor is it his ‘escape’ from the ‘big bad world’ while I get no refuge from labor & all of life’s concerns. When at home, he shouldn’t make messes & expect me to clean them up. He should help out with the chores. Or zone out once he crosses the threshold every single time he returns from wherever. In other words a good lasting relationship. Not the trappings of it. The actual relationship. I’d rather have that deal than the engagement ring, the big pageant of a wedding.

  • Carolyn had it right. That woman needs to get out of Dodge last week. I’ve no doubt the marriage would be nightmare fuel if she went through with it (complete with cake smash). Personally I love jewelry, enjoy wearing it, and have specific tastes and parameters for same. When my partner and I first started to get involved I downplayed this aspect of me, but it didn’t take me long to realize that he likes to keep a mental file of my likes and dislikes so he can surprise me later. Love that. (He was surprised when I told him I wouldn’t want a diamond. The look on his face was so stinking cute!)

  • In Iceland, people are often engage for a long time up to 10 years is normal but, we put up weding rings to get engage, so bouth parners were the rings. We usualy buy them together. We get the same tax rights if you regester that yu live togeter. When in US was marketing dimonds in early 1900 we had no money, fiting for our freadom from Danmark. We hade no money. So it makes more sence for us to have the same rings for bouth.
