When Did Muhammad Consummated Marriage With Aisha?

Critics argue that Aisha, the wife of Prophet Muhammad, was only six years old when she was betrothed to him in his 50s. The marriage was consummated when she was nine years old, two years after her migration to Medina. Authentic Hadith reports show that Aisha was married at the age of 6, but the consummation took place two years after the marriage. Many Sunni scholars have rejected the narratives about Aisha’s small age, as they state that a Muslim husband can engage in sex with a child.

The issue of Prophet Muhammad’s marriage with Aisha continues to be a topic of debate on Islam. Some Muslims believe that Aisha was only six years old when she was betrothed to him and only nine when the marriage was consummated. However, other sources agree that the marriage was not consummated at the time of the marriage.

A total of eleven women are confirmed as having been married to Muhammad, the founder of Islam. As a sign of respect, Muslims refer to each of these wives with the title Umm al-Muʼminin (Arabic: أم ٱلْمُؤْمِنِين), which is derived from the Quran.

All extant hadiths agree that Aisha was married to Muhammad in Mecca but the marriage was consummated only in the month of Shawwal after his hijrah to Medina. The marriage took place two years after migration, meaning that Aisha was thirty-two years old when the marriage was consummated.

  • Aisha admits she is lying Narrated `Aisha: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) used to drink honey in the house of Zainab, the daughter of Jahsh, and would stay there with her. So Hafsa and I agreed secretly that, if he come to either of us, she would say to him. “It seems you have eaten Maghafir (a kind of bad-smelling resin), for I smell in you the smell of Maghafir,” (We did so) and he replied. “No, but I was drinking honey in the house of Zainab, the daughter of Jahsh, and I shall never take it again. I have taken an oath as to that, and you should not tell anybody about it.” Sahih al-Bukhari 4912 Aisha claimed that Prophet Muhammad had married her when she was a child but she had lied and there are proofs

  • You know, when the Muslims are asked where is Jesus(as) they would reply with high confidence that he’s in the heavens(two thousand years). But when the story of the night journey is mentioned some of them( Muslims) would doubt it and have no confidence to convoy it to others. The same thing about the prophet’s marriage to Aisha, they ( the Muslims) always trying to explain why he married her was because of this and that unnecessarily when they know it wasn’t a questionable subject throughout human history except in modern times by Islam haters. In their own society now days young girls as young as 12 get married in United States. Christians never have any problem with Mary(ra) being pregnant when she was 12 and being married to Joseph at the same age. Aisha(ra) was going to be married to another man before being married to the prophet(SAW) this shows that Aisha was already mature. When a Muslim speaker speaks about a subject concerning this matter he’s speaking to the Muslims most of the time because it’s the Muslims who are asking such questions. I reverted to Islam a while back and it burns me how some Muslims don’t study their own religion.

  • If you want 2 billion hasanat in under 10 seconds recite this:\r ‘Allahummaghfir lil muslimina wal muslimat, wal mu’minina wal mu’minat’ \r (Ya Allah please forgive all Muslim men and women, believing men and women).\r copy and share to earn the rewards of allah (swt)\r hope to see you all in jannah ❤

  • No one can impose the 21st century mentality on hundreds of years The marriage of the Prophet Muhammad with Aisha, may God be pleased with him, is a revelation from God and his wisdom. There is no girl like Aisha in this time, and there is no perfect husband and perfect man like Muhammad, peace be upon him.

  • The Prophet (ﷺ) asked Abu Bakr for `Aisha’s hand in marriage. Abu Bakr said “But I am your brother.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “You are my brother in Allah’s religion and His Book, but she (Aisha) is lawful for me to marry.” Sounds like her father didn’t approve of a 50 year old trying to marry his 6 year old daughter.

  • If Aisha was so bright and could help Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) in spreading the Message of Allah, then why can’t Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) adopt her (as a daughter)? Why would Aisha’s father who is so wholeheartedly devoted to Islam be against this adoption? This has always amazed me about Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and I genuinely want to understand. Your response would be appreciated.

  • Aisha was engaged to Ibn Jubair before the Prophet married her, but after she broke off her engagement, the Allah said, “This is your wife in this world and the hereafter, Aisha, who became the Mother of the Believers, one, the youngest, the female, and the greatest Islamic scholar in Islamic history.”

  • As a Muslim I find it hard to justify this marriage. I have already heard/read the justifications of it being common practise then, her reaching puberty, to spread Islam and ideal marriage examples through hadiths, her being his closest friend’s daughter etc. I’m not convinced because mentally she could not have been developed enough to comprehend it and accept it. Also if it was “normal” at that time, it isn’t something most people would do now but the actions of Prophet are supposed to be universal and for all-time. And this example does not make logical sense to happen.

  • Assalaamu alaykoum wa rahmatu Allah wa barakkatuh what a great husband he was s.a.w from all the kind ways to express his devotion to his family and respect and I like the nickname A’aish when he s.a.w call her that way and his love for her “how is the knot ” when she asked that are lessons to learn from how to be flexible for long term marriage ma sha Allah… ma sha Allah…love was in the air that time💞👌👍

  • If he wanted to get a small girl just to convey the Deen to the world …he could have just adopted her as a daughter …instead of marrying her when he was her grandfathers age …doesn’t make any sense …how can the role model the greatest of humans the prophet do something like this…he should rather stop such acts of child marriage to set an example for the followers …

  • What about her age Sheikh? there is a lot of issue with the numbers…if she was 45 at the battle of Jamal that makes her 13 at marriage not 6, after 3 years consummation = 16 not 9…and if her sister Asma (RA) was 29 and 10 years older than Aisha, that makes her 19 not 6…then +3 = 22…You see Sheikh there are a lot of sisters and brothers including yourself who give da3wa, and those who hate Islam have only two games to play with…Muhammad has sex with a 6 year old, and 2nd anchoring Islam with terrorism (this one is easy because they admitted Operations northwood 1962 and more)…but the 6 year old marriage does not mix with the quran as much as I see it. Do you not agree that the 6 year old marriage of Aisha is an error? I am not a scholar but it would be nice for scholars to make da3wa easier for the Muslims and remove this error, because clearly even the prophet himself prohibited writing down ahadith let alone allowing errors that make life difficult for those giving da3wa, jazakAllahu khairan.

  • Please direct me in right way…. I’m a revert of few years now. But still cannot understand this marriage with little girl. With all respect to prophet, I just cannot accept it… I understand it was normal to marry young girls that time but he was an example and is now for us nowadays. As we believe Quran was sent to us for all times no matter when we live so prophet’s actions. Marriage to older woman, divorced woman, woman with kids…very good example. But marrying little girl…Please where do I look? Explanation like prophet was one of a kind or he was special is not enough. I understand it. Allah knows the future, he knew prophet would be accused in nowadays…

  • Prior to the Prophet’s proposal to Aisha, she was already engaged to marry Jubayr ibn Mutim, who was an unbeliever at the time. The prohibition of marrying unbelievers was not issued yet. Also, it is believed she was much older than claimed (9yrs), if you count facts and recorded incidents: Some facts about Aisha She was born before “The Call” and The Prophet became engaged to her ten years after “the Call” upon the death of his first wife, Khadija. It is stated that her parents were companions of The Prophet before “The Call” and that her father had already promised her to another man previously. This may have happened when she was six. After she was betrothed it was five years before she was married, this is evidenced where it explains she was betrothed two years before the hijra to Medina, which took three years and she was married the year after the hijra took place. Aisha is said to have died at the age of 66 years old at 58 AH, this means at the time of the call she was eight years old. If she was only engaged after the call (even by a year) she must have been nine and as her marriage was three years later she would have been a minimum of 12. However, Aisha’s sister Asma is stated to have been ten years older than Aisha and is listed as being 28 years old in the first year of the call. This makes Aisha 18 years old at the time and then 19 at time of marriage. Clearly these two factors contradict each other, added to the problem is that the Hadith were traditionally passed on verbally and as stated Aisha’s age (unlike legal hadith) was not really a matter for discussion.

  • So Aisha was his spouse. Muhammad could have adopted her to be his daughter. She was only 6 years old. Men in the Middle East are still doing this.. in Afghanistan. Immoral child marriage. But he married her which gives him the right as a husband to consummate. Do not fluff this. The only person that married for true love and aided in the coming of our Lord in the flesh was Joseph. Mary was a perpetual virgin and Joseph was called on by the angel Gabriel to marry her and hold steadfast to her purity. God chose Joseph because he was a good man and a widower. And to be honest there is no clear scripture that talks about Mary and Joseph’s marriage .. but they were married. Prove that Aisha was kept pure ar the age of when he married her. Where in the Quran does it say that?

  • For those who have issues! The prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him married Aisha peace be upon her and lived an amazing life, cared for her, and loved her. Nowadays less than 9 years old girls are raped and harassed and nobody makes an issue. Early-age marriage is not an issue but insulting someone is a sin. Please study his life then say something. You will be amazed at how they spent life.
