I think you should have started as to why this custom is practiced. In China traditional the boy is responsible for taking care of the parents in their old age. The daughter traditional is responsible in helping her husband to take care of his parents in old age. So when you give a daughter away, you receive compensation of sorts as the daughter primarily will be focused on the husbands parents. This money is supposed to help the family with the daughter in their retirement. This is the base reason for this. Now the contribution is in general scaled toward the income of the husband. In one area the dowry may be a few thousand dollars, in other areas pending on the families situation it may be millions. So it is important to understand why a custom such as this is present. Especially in rural areas this custom will go on for many more years, it takes time to change the thinking of people. And in a country such as china where the change from rural to industrial happened in such a short time, it will cause problems. It also maters what family you marry into. If the girl comes from a upper middle class family, then you can expect dowries in the range of several hundred thousand dollars. if it is from a poor family the dowry may be just 10000 dollars or less. This is a problem with chinese in america too, as a chinese man born in america, the womens family usually asks for 50k bride price, gifts, wedding cost, and must have house or have down payment money for a house, no debt. The total cost combined is at least 200k, but it depends on the quality of the wife, and man too. I chose to go mgtow and i see some of my chinese friends who are well off getting divorced and losing a ton of money. Its just not worth it. Many chinese women here are aging and still have high standards, and some are too old for kids already and priced themselves out of marriage.
As an American, I think it’s an out-dated custom. We have entirely too many “gold-diggers” here in the states already. I see them attending university to meet a rich husband. This escalation of a bad tradition is probably due to the one child policy, if they have only one child and it is a daughter the parents will lose a means of support in their old age hence a large dowry, if they have multiple children and some would be males then old age support is guaranteed in a culture that doesn’t use pensions as much as in the west, if the Chinese had decent pensions, even if they only have one child especially one daughter, they would not be so hard pressed asking for bride prices and treating their daughters as commodities. My recommendations for the men are to migrate abroad in SEAsia and build families there as passport bros or go to warzones and find brides there where male mortality is higher, either way they need to save a decent amount of money as they are not only marrying the bride but her family as well but at least there is no shortage of women that would necessitate high bride prices and the expense is more an act of charity rather than a business transaction and gives it a human face.
A dowry is paid by the bride’s family to the groom though so the title is a bit confusing…. why are men paying dowries. Men pay bride prices but dowries should also rise to match bride prices. Also why do they care so much to get married, people in the west are abandoning the idea which stems from religion. Given the ratio of men to women in China, men might as well save the money, go travel – have experiences live life and find a girl on your travels around the world who won’t even want a dowry from you to start with.
