What year did Scenes from a Marriage come out?
1973 Scenes from a Marriage (TV Mini Series 1973) – IMDb. Ten years of marriage for Marianne and Johan. This film is very authentic. It’s very frank, honest, and heartbreaking. The two main actors are amazing. I never doubted their sincerity. They showed the couple’s intense and nuanced emotions in every scene. I say “overwhelmingly” because that’s exactly what it is. It’s hard to watch at times. The scene where Johan admits his infidelity was especially powerful. I felt Marianne’s pain, anger, and confusion. There are moments of tenderness, like when Johan comforts Marianne after her nightmare. The actors had great material to work with. Bergman knows human nature. His dialogue is poetic and authentic. The couple’s fights are honest but alarming. Characters rarely say what they feel. The characters rarely know what they feel. They are emotional illiterates. Bergman’s direction is simple, which makes it effective. The film is all about the characters. This is a powerful, moving film. I’ve only seen the movie. I bet the TV version is even more detailed. Why are scenes from a marriage so good?
Scenes from a Marriage is about intimacy. Anyone in a long relationship can relate to the ups and downs of intimacy. Intimacy is not an ideal, but a reality. Bergman makes the audience feel the couples’ mood swings. If they like one of them, they can make the other one angry. After the breakup, Marianne and Johan are getting along well. Marianne has been sleeping with Johan instead of her husband, David. David asks her if she loves David. Is he being obtuse, or is he angry at Marianne? Johan, who is trying on the mask of a misogynist, refers to the hatred he felt for Marianne’s body during their marriage. Since Ullmann is so attractive, we can assume this repulsion is about men’s fear of women, their maternal abilities, and their mysterious secretions. He must avoid this scary intimacy and create a distance. If familiarity leads to contempt, Johan must break up with Marian to rekindle romance. Scenes from a Marriage is great because you get to see Ullmann and Josephson, two of the best modern actors, act together. Josephson had been in Bergman films since 1946. He was a star of the Swedish theater and a writer and director. Ullmann, a Norwegian actress who debuted with Bergman at twenty-seven, would make nearly a dozen films with him. These two performers are reliable, and their chemistry ensures we’ll be emotionally invested. Bergman followed his mentor, Carl Th. Dreyer keeps making movies about faces. Ullmann can go from beautiful to plain in a moment. Her face can look beautiful, but she is most moving when her eyes are distorted. This is shown in the scene where she receives the news that her husband wants to leave her. Ullmann’s movie-star allure is sometimes threatened by a placid, rosy-cheeked, Heidi-like complacency. Bergman uses the bearded, existentially discontented Josephson as a sardonic goad to undermine this. Marianne plays the role society expects of her, while also working as a divorce lawyer. She is the protector of daily life: the good mother and wife, the obedient daughter, the organizer of family holiday functions. She believes in the dream of bourgeois domestic happiness. She asks her husband, “Why can’t we be happy?” She diets because she knows her job is to look good for her husband. Marianne and Johan are a professional couple. He has to make a change.

Mira world is crashing before her eyes and Johnathan has pass on trying to pickup the pieces with this relationship refusing to go …📹 Mira tries to tell Johnathan that she wants to come back (scenes from a marriage)
I dunno if its just me but seeing ppl defending Mira boggles my mind! She just dropped a bomb in the middle of the night telling Jonathan she has been seeing someone for months, she is in love with that person and shes leaving for 3 months the next morning and wants a divorce! WHAT! The disrespect. I honestly hated the character (love jessica tho). She ruined Jonathan, she literally tore him to pieces, thats why I was glad to see him do the same thing to her later in the show with the moving and all. Mira was so selfish, never let Jonathan speak his mind, talk about his feelinges or complain, she never listened to him whilst he was always asking about her feelings and he ALWAYS listened to her. The show was so frustrating lmao but i truly loved it.
My life goal now is to become calm and patient as Jonathan packing her clothes. Jokes aside, it must’ve been so hard to collect himself and not breakdown. I was so angry at Mira at this scene, actually not only in this take but in the whole series. Each episode made my heart break. The director delivered such a realistic cinematography together with these two brilliant actors that sometimes I felt bad perusal them, as if I were invading their privacy.
Wow, they were amazing. That’s Oscar stuff right there. Her wanting so bad to take refuge from the present & him desperately holding to on to it. I got the sense that this wasn’t her first withered love, but it sure was for him. Folks pine about their first love being so intense & that they’ll never feel another that deep. perusal these two reminded me to be grateful about that.. I think the later loves are better because you understand the fragility of love which helps you to not take it for granted. The whimsical nature of it demands you to let go your imaginary absolutes & embrace love when you can. .
I haven’t watched the series but if you examine his behaviour here, he insists on helping and folding her clothes because in that moment, it’s the only thing he has control over. He is crushed because she wants to leave yet he doesn’t show it in the way she is expecting and believes he cannot convince her to stay. Her behaviour shows her frustration at him because she wants him to react and demonstrate his love in a way she understands. They have lost sight of how to communicate, however with guidance and practice, they can understand each other again. Question is whether they have the nerve or the motivation to do so. Just my opinion.
Such a painfully beautiful scene. The juxtaposition between her raging guilt and shame and his profound, unspeakable sadness. She’s racing around frantically, trying to escape the situation as fast as possible and avoid facing her own actions. Then you have Jonathan. All he can do is quietly and patiently try to help her, because he can’t stand perusal her pack the bag herself and would rather do it himself? (Maybe the sight of her fumbling over it is too painful to watch) But in the act of him helping, in that act of kindness, it only serves to make Mira feel worse so she tries to fight it. The whole thing is so gut-wrenching and real. So powerful. Bravo.
Can we talk about how he noticed the bruises on her back? He pointed it out and she closed the closet door to finish putting on her top. I thought when he started asking about the other guy he would mention the bruises again. Mira clearly must be stuck in some sort of “victim mentality” she can’t get get away from it and maybe she doesn’t want to. In the first episode when they were on the couch having that interview Mira mentioned how in her past relationships they were abusive and how meeting Jonathan he was a totally different man from what she was used to. Does Mira miss the old her when she may have felt more alive even if she was being abused by her partners? Quite sad. When someone is in that mindset you cannot get them out no matter how much you try. Maybe the child can save her but Jonathan will struggle to.
I honestly respect the fact that she doesn’t find him attractive anymore or that she feels prisoner (in her own mind), but I don’t share her actions. She just gave up, instead he was desperately trying to adjust their marriage. He is obsessive, moral, suffers from asma (and i think that she can’t stand that), while she just wants to experiment with new people (she’s not wrong but leaving her daughter alone with her dad for three months without telling her something is kinda rude and disrespectful. She acted in a selfish way, she considered only her own feelings and her only happiness. ) Cheating shouldn’t be glorified, it seems that in this society, nowadays, anything can be accepted. But the topic is different if we talk about open relationships!
Being in a relationship with the knowledge that both parties are continously contemplating to bolt out is the reason to stay out. Imagine there is a product at your local Walmart store that 50% of the prior buyers have returned due to dissatisfaction, and another 20% are contemplating such a return. That is marriage, yet there’s a line at the door of new customers.
This has nothing to do with him being able to control something. It’s him accepting the situation and helping move it along quicker. Her feelings of anger because he doesn’t “react” accordingly to her manipulative behavior are invalid. She’s abusing him in real time and we shouldn’t intellectualize her behavior to give undeserved empathy to her. Also, this isn’t a man v woman thing, if the roles were reversed the conclusion would be the same.
In the second episode, after confessing her adultery with Poli, Mira is in the shower with her back to Jonathan, and he asks what the bruises are on her back, Mira doesn’t answer. I understand that she suffered somatization during the two days she stayed with Poli in the ship’s cabin, an act that was predominant in wanting separation and “falling in love”, as Jonathan, as a Jew, did not have this practice. Mira, at 15 years old, was already released and one of her boyfriends was the leader of a rock band, who I think was addicted to drugs and abusive sexual practices!!!
I feel for Jonathan, I mean I feel like women does this.. Why couldn’t Mira talk to him earlier instead of throwing it all out of the blue then blaming Jonathan for not noticing and then leaves next thing in the morning. It’s always a mans fault that saying is so true. Why does she have to do that, why couldn’t she just talked earlier.
This series is very bad. It teaches people to cheat and lie. The story is about two selfish people. The first betrays her husband and abandons her daughter and Aborting her baby . Because she was bored, and the husband cheats on his second wife with her, marriage is not just sex. Marriage is a complete life in which patience loyalty never gives up, in the end the only victim is their daughter
