When Should Wedding Cake Be Delivered?

Wedding cake orders should be made at least six months in advance to allow time for the cake baker to work their magic. If wedding day details are finalized, Lynn recommends ordering the cake up to 12 months in advance, especially if the wedding is for a special occasion. Cakes can be delivered to your house or the wedding location anywhere in the UK.

The general rule of thumb is to order your wedding cake 2 to 5 months in advance, as this gives the cake maker enough time to design and create your custom cake without it being too close to the big day. The best time to order the wedding cake depends on the time of year you plan to get married. According to All Things Cake, those who book a wedding for May, June, or October should order their cake a full six months in advance.

The best time to collect your own cake is the morning of the day before your wedding for sponge style cakes and the earlier part of your wedding week for fruit cakes. Make sure to check with your cake designer for tips for storing and transporting the cake to the venue.

A wedding cake can be expensive, with an average cost of $500 in the United States. However, the cost can range from $100 to $1000 or more. Most bakers allow for two to three weeks from the time the order is placed until the day of the event.

In summary, to ensure a successful wedding cake delivery, it is essential to clearly communicate the where and when of your cake delivery and to consider the timing of the ceremony and reception.

How far in advance should I make a cake?

Un-iced: If you dont need to ice your cake until the day, you can bake your cake at least 2-3 days ahead of time. But you will need to store it carefully. Ensure that you wrap the cake and have it stored in an airtight container so it doesnt lose moisture.Iced:The icing will lock moisture in, but if youre making buttercream or cream cheese icing, it will only have a couple of days before it will need to be refrigerated or frozen. Ideally, make an iced cake on the day to keep it fresh.Refrigerated: Your cakes will last longer in the fridge, but for an event, you wont want to push it longer than about 3 days. Make sure you wrap them carefully and take them out for an hour to return to room temperature before you serve.Freezing:If you decide to freeze the cake, it can last for up to 2 months in the freezer if properly stored. You will need to thaw your frozen cake overnight before you decorate and serve it. *How Do You Properly Freeze a Cake?. Most cakes will freeze well provided the right steps are taken to protect them during the process. If you are freezing before you have decorated or iced the cake, ensure that the cake has had time to cool fully after removing it from the oven. From there, wrap your cake in a layer of plastic wrap first, followed by a layer of tinfoil. If your cake has already been cut into separate layers, follow the same process, but wrap them all individually. *Can I Decorate a Cake 2 Days in Advance?. Yes, you can. Its best practice to decorate the cake as close to the day of serving as possible, but it will also store well in the fridge. If the icing or frosting has any perishable ingredients, we recommend storing the cake in the fridge to keep it as fresh as possible.

How long can a wedding cake last without refrigeration?

  • Plain Cake: If its a simple sponge or pound cake with no dairy-based fillings or frostings, you can usually keep it at room temperature for up to a week if its well-wrapped or stored in an airtight container.
  • Cream or Custard Filled: These should be refrigerated as soon as possible, but if you must, they can stay out for a few hours, depending on the room temperature.
  • Buttercream or Fondant Covered: These types of cakes can generally stand up to room temperature a bit better than others. A cake with buttercream or fondant could last up to 3 days at room temperature, depending on the filling.
  • Fruit-Filled or Topped: If the cake has fresh fruit, fruit filling, or a fruit-based frosting, aim to eat it within 24 hours if kept at room temperature. The extra moisture makes it more prone to spoilage.

Always store your cake in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, and use an airtight container or well-sealed plastic wrap to protect it from air and potential contaminants. Also, keep in mind that high humidity can affect the cakes quality.

Regardless of these guidelines, always check for signs of spoilage like mold, off-putting smells, or changes in texture before diving in.

Can you pick up a wedding cake the day before the wedding?

What about Long Trips?. If you are traveling more than one hour with a wedding cake, you can check with your baker about picking the cake up the day BEFORE the wedding day.

Ask the baker if its possible to freeze the cake so that it will transport safely. Place the frozen cake in the fridge once you arrive at your location so it can continue to slowly thaw overnight.

Another option for extra long distances (if you have the room) is to make a makeshift cooler out of a cardboard box and dry ice.

5. 🚦 Drive Carefully with Someone Near the Wedding Cake. I recommend sending two people to transport your wedding cake.

How long before wedding should you make wedding cake?

Depending on the type of cake, sponge cakes can be baked up to three days before you serve them. However, if this doesnt give you enough time to complete any intricate decorations, or making it this close to the wedding day will bring you up in a rash of hives, you can freeze it.

Most sponge cakes can be frozen for up to three months without ruining their moisture or flavour. To defrost, simply transfer the cake from the freezer to the fridge up to 24 hours before you need to serve it. This will allow your cake enough time to thaw out, and will still leave time for the all important icing and decoration! Make sure not to start decorating until your cake is completely thawed!

However, if you are planning on a more intricate design on your cake, you may need to defrost the cake with more than 24 hours to spare. Make sure you dont surpass the three day mark though – as this will mean the flavour and texture of the cake will be destroyed before you even serve it to your guests!

  • That is beautiful! I would have been so stressed out driving that distance. I bet you had one happy couple. If you are at all familiar with Freehold NJ and the (now gone) Freehold traffic circle…I had to pick my wedding cake up and take to the venue. It required going around the circle. My soon to be husband was driving a 9 passenger station wagon. I was in the back, on my stomach, trying to keep the cake stabilized. At one point my nose was about a half inch from the cake. I was never so happy as I was when we dropped that cake off. That was 50 years ago.

  • Karolyn, Beautiful design!! Thank you so much for posting this!! I have a recommendation that I learned. Take a small drinking straw and insert it into the blowout and suck out the air. It’s amazing how the icing retracts then you fill in the hole with a little icing and smooth it. Thank you again for sharing.

  • Oh my goodness..this cake is gorgeous! May I ask what size cake pans you used and did you torte your cakes? I have tried your technique on the buttercream icing with the air bubbles and who would have thought that would work. The icing looks so smooth! Thank you for sharing all of your tips and tricks. I’m thoroughly enjoying them!!

  • I did a 3Tier Wedding Cake, with top Tier on the stilts or suspended I don’t know what it’s called lol. Delivery was an HR drive, I did the same thing, cooled the car, brought everything that would fix it it something was to go wrong. Brought Back Up to help carry the cake (it was too heavy for me to move the bottom two tiers). I explained how to cut the cake, as it had the supports recommend for such a size, it also had Real Red Rose’s. Which I took 2 cake boards cut them smaller then where they were being places, used buttercream frosting as a base to put the flowers in on top of the cake boards. One for the top of the second tier one for the top of the top tier. I explained to use a spatula to lift the flower covered cake boards up, set aside on a plate. Then dig in. They pulled all the flowers out placing them in cups of water and threw out the cake boards… And tried to put the cake together as they were doing two events and wanted the same cake at both. I tried to tell them cut into top tier at first event the bottom at the second event. Talk about not listening, they even stuck the cake in the freezer on the first night, because they did not make room in the fridge as I had suggested. Pulled it out the next morning and left on counter to thaw the second day…. I was sadden as I seen how bad they messed it up. But all I could say was, That was NOT what I told you to do. In fact did what I said not to do. The cake made the 1 hr drive with no extra work as far as a Cake Safe or insulated Cake Safe or even an Ice Chest.
