When ordering bridesmaid dresses, it is essential to make a final decision about the dress or dresses that you want your girls to wear about six months before the wedding. It usually takes between two and three months for dresses to arrive, so you need to leave enough time for alterations and delivery. To find the best dresses for your bridal party, consider choosing reputable retailers, tracking shipments, and shopping for ready-to-ship bridesmaid dresses.
Bridesmaids often wonder when they should order their dresses, but it is best to shop about six months out to allow for the order to arrive and any alterations needed. If you have a shorter timeline, shop ready-to-ship bridesmaid dresses that will ship to you. It is also important to set deadlines for your bridesmaids to order their dresses by mid-May to stay on a comfortable timeline.
When ordering bridesmaid dresses, it is recommended to give them a cut-off date of when they need to have placed their dress order. Mix and match your bridal party dresses to avoid feeling singled out and having to wear a different dress than everyone else. Some designer dresses and other bridesmaid dresses from bridal boutiques may take two or three months to get in stock, so you need to allow plenty of time for shipping and alterations.
Brides are typically encouraged to have an idea of the dresses they would like their bridesmaids to wear at least seven to eight months before the wedding. By following these tips, you can ensure that your bridesmaids have the best experience ordering bridesmaid dresses, ensuring that they receive the best possible service and look for the perfect wedding attire.
📹 What Size Wedding Dress Should I Order?
In this week’s video I’m talking about why alterations are a must when it comes to your wedding dress and how you determine …
Who pays for bridesmaid dresses?
- Who Pays forBridesmaids Dresses in the US?. In the US, the tradition is for the bridesmaids to each pay for their own dress, regardless of who is making the final call on what the dresses will look like.
- The bride should try to be flexible about the kind of dresses she chooses for her girls. She should avoid being too extravagant, and take their opinions into account. Its only reasonable that they will want to like the dress, feel good in the dress, and expect to wear it again. This is always something to bear in mind, but even more so when bridesmaids are paying for their own dresses!
- Sometimes, thebrides and bridesmaids agree to split the cost of the dresses. Offering to pay half the cost of the dresses is a nice gesture on the part of the bride, especially if she has an expensive dress in mind, or knows that one or more of her bridesmaids is strapped for cash.
- If the bride offers to pay in full, the bridesmaids will probably not be offended, but they may insist on paying themselves, according to tradition!
- Who Pays for Bridesmaids Dresses in Australia?. In Australia, the tradition is for the bridesmaids to each pay for their own dress, regardless of who is making the final call on what the dresses will look like.

How soon before a wedding should you get bridesmaid dress altered?
Schedule your fitting approximately one month before the wedding. Somebridesmaids prefer to do it earlier, but its best to wait until a month to ensure the most accurate fit.
If you think your dress needs extensive adjustments, schedule your first fitting about six weeks in advance. That way, youll have plenty of time to do a second fitting and a final fitting when the tailoring is completed.
During peak wedding season (June to October), bridal boutiques get busier than toy stores at Christmas time. So, schedule your fitting as far ahead as possible (at least two months in advance) to make sure you get an appointment.
About one week before the wedding, when all of your alterations are complete, try the dress on at home to ensure it still fits. Do not wait until the morning of the wedding to find out you cant zip it up!
What does a maid of honor pay for?
We often see the maid of honor assist in covering the cost of the bridal shower (often in conjunction with a family member of the bride), covering her own costs and some of the costs of the bride for the bachelorette party (in conjunction with the rest of the bridesmaids), her own travel to and from the wedding, a wedding gift to the couple, professional hair and makeup (if its not required by the bride), her attire and other accessories for the wedding and surrounding celebrations and sometimes smaller things like chipping in for food and beverage on the morning of the wedding, if needed, says Craft.
When should bridesmaids get dressed?
– Always allow MORE time than you think for bridesmaids hair and makeup– Bridesmaids, once the bride is getting close to the end of her hair/makeup, well grab her for a quick shot of all of you in your robes!– After the “robe” shot is accomplished, the bride finishes getting ready and its time for you to change!– Bridesmaids should be dressed and ready when the bride is ready to get in her own dress! (along with the Mother of the Bride!)– Only 2-3 bridesmaids will actually be able to help the bride get into her dress but the other gals can surround the bride, block distractions and still be a part of the process!– Its important to remember that bridesmaids do not need to be PERFECT when the bride gets into her dress. If your hair isnt 100% done or youre missing your jewelry, its ok. Dont slow down the timeline because you want to be 100% perfect in the brides dress pictures. Those little imperfections will not be noticeable, but falling behind on the timeline will be! 🙂

Are bridesmaid dresses supposed to touch the floor?
Long bridesmaid dresses. Long or maxi bridesmaid dresses are certainly the most popular and commonly used in a wedding. They are designed to fall to below the ankle and possibly even touch the floor slightly. The main reason why long bridesmaid dresses are featured most over the other options are theyre very versatile. A long dress can be more or less formal depending on the exact style, colour, and accessories you choose whilst always looking amazing in photos.
Longer dresses never look out of place no matter what season the wedding is taking place in – and there is the added benefit of being long enough to hide the shoes. So, if your bridesmaids want to take a break from heels during the day it wont impact the look of the dress to switch to flats and give their feet a well-deserved rest.
Short bridesmaid dresses. Short bridesmaid dresses sit at around knee-length and even though they arent at the same level of popularity as long dresses, they can still suit a specific style of wedding very well. If your wedding is going to be a casual and relaxed affair, then shorter dresses might be more appealing to your bridal party. Especially if it is taking place in the summer or abroad where the weather will be quite hot.

Do brides pay for bridesmaid dress alterations?
If your bridesmaids are paying for the dresses…Then it usually makes sense to have them pay for the dress alterations as well. Unless all your bridesmaids live in the same area and will go to the same tailor, then letting them choose someone on their own and covering it themselves makes more sense.
Q: We just got the bridesmaid dresses in and we now need to get the alterations done. It just occurred to me, though, am I supposed to pay for that? Or do my bridesmaids cover that cost?
Wonderful question! It’s really important that you think about the costs associated with being a bridesmaid. Like the wedding party attire and bridesmaid dress alterations. Ideally, you want to figure this out early before you ask your wedding party, so that they have all the facts, but it’s never too late.
Traditionally, your bridesmaids would cover the bridesmaid dress alterations cost. But, this is 2016 and you don’t have to adhere to that. So,here are a few options you can consider based on your situation.
Is it rude to ask bridesmaids to pay for their dress?
Whatever you choose to do, or whatever your budget allows you to do, just make sure youre open and honest with your bridesmaids at all times. If youre asking them to pay, give them as much notice as possible, so theyll have a long time to save. Asking bridesmaids at modern weddings to pay for their own dresses is relatively common, but its important to give them plenty of time to afford it. Saving for a £200 dress is a much easier task if your wedding is two years away compared to just a couple of months.
For more information, read our guide to wedding etiquette: who (traditionally) pays for what?
Who pays for the bridesmaids shoes?. While many brides and their families offer to pay for the bridesmaids dresses, its not as common to offer to pay for their shoes. Shoes may be a part of their outfit, but theres usually far more flexibility when it comes to footwear than the dress. So, this will often be something the bridesmaids pay for, whether its flats, heels or wedges.
