Hair color should be done two weeks before the wedding for an established routine to allow time for adjustments and maintain a natural look. If you are changing from brunette to blonde, it is recommended to do so about six months before the wedding. For short hair, 3 to 5 days before the wedding is ideal. For long hair, all earlier information applies.
An appointment with your dentist for teeth whitening and deep cleaning is also recommended. Hair colorists should start early, and a vitamin regimen with supplements and a fitness plan should be started at least six months before the wedding. Skin expert Sophie Evans recommends getting a trial spray tan before final fittings to determine if you want to look tanned before the big day.
For long wedding hair, a deep conditioning mask using Amikas The Kure can nourish and strengthen the hair in advance. If you get highlights, opt for a full head instead of a half just before the wedding, especially if you are a blonde. Facials should be tackled far in advance, and color touch-ups should come one to two weeks before the wedding.
It is okay to hire a new colorist if you have a least nine months before the wedding, but starting three months in advance allows enough time to get your hair cut, colored, and freshened up. Talk to your colorist as early as possible (six months before the wedding) and be clear about the outcome you want.

How should I style my hair before my wedding?
Prepping Your Hair for the Perfect Wedding Day Hairstyle: A Bridal Stylists GuideStart with clean, dry hair:Plan ahead for a professional blowout:Avoid excessive styling products:Extensions and accessories:Timing is key:Bring inspiration photos:Trust your stylist:
Your wedding day is one of the most important and cherished days of your life. As a bridal stylist, I understand the significance of every detail, particularly when it relates to the realm of beauty. To ensure your wedding hairstyle looks flawless on your special day, proper hair preparation is absolutely essential. I like to say the outcome of your bridal hairstyle depends 50% on the artist and their skillset & 50% on how the bride does her homework in preparation for the style. But this is fun homework, because its not math. In this blog post, I will share my expert tips on how to prep your hair for a wedding day hairstyle that will leave you feeling confident and beautiful.
The foundation of any great hairstyle is clean, dry hair. Wash your hair the night before your wedding day and blow dry it either upside down or preferably with a round brush, elevating everything at the roots. This will ensure your hair has natural body going into the appointment, which is easy for a stylist to build off of. Avoid using heavy conditioners or styling products that can weigh down your hair or make it greasy.
If youre not confident in your blow-drying skills, consider booking a professional blowout the day before your wedding and be sure to communicate to the stylist to use minimal product, if at all any. A skilled stylist can give your hair the volume, smoothness, and bounce needed for the foundation of a flawless hairstyle.
Is it OK to not wash hair before highlights?
The general rule of thumb is to not wash your hair the day of coloring – or even the day before coloring if your hair washing routine allows. You might hear colorists say a second (or even third) day hair is best. Why is that so? Unwashed hair produces a natural oil protective layer.
How long before an event for highlights?
When Is It Safe to Color Hair Before a Wedding?. Come in two weeks before your wedding for a routine color to give it time to settle, look more natural, and to make any adjustments if necessary, says Kusero. If youre trying something new—like going from brunette to blonde—Wallace recommends making the change about six months before the wedding.
“Start a few months out to give time for adjustments, says Kusero. Stay close to your natural color and make small adjustments until youre comfortable with more change. “Be clear with your colorist on the end result youre looking for and bring photos for inspiration. Figure out what he/she thinks about timing and set out a plan for how often youll come in. You want to start as soon as possible to give your hair time to adjust to the new look and to make any changes. Especially for big color changes, your hair needs time to go through all the processes.”
Most Popular Hair Requests. “Typically, women want to go lighter for their wedding. They want to look softer and brighter, says Wallace. While Kusero sees a lot of root maintenance in addition to requests for highlights for a pop of light and color dimension.”
Do highlights look better the next day?
If you feel like your highlights really pop more right out of the salon, thats due to the toner your colorist is using. Highlights can be brighter and more vibrant right out the salon, depending on the type of toner that your stylist used. The right toner can cool down a platinum blonde, or add a buttery golden to all over warm brunette, Baumhauer said.
Highlights looking less bright after you washed a few times? You arent going crazy — thats because toners dont last forever. Unfortunately, toners only last a few shampoos and as they rinse out, highlights can look muted or dull. This can make the allover color look less fresh than when a client has just left the salon, Baumhauer said.

How long should hair be dirty before coloring?
The day before should leave oil-prone hair and scalps fresh enough for flawless application. Meanwhile, for normal or dry hair types that arent as prone to oiliness, day two or day three hair can act as the perfect base for applying hair color.
Do highlights get better after a few days?
Washing highlights the day after only strips the hair, meaning all the beautiful colours will go down the drain (literally). By waiting for up to 72 hours before washing, you will give the hair cuticles time to close. The pigments will also be able to seep into the hair fibres. The longer you wait, the better the highlights will look!
Proper Hair Washing After Getting Highlights. Eventually, you will need to wash your hair. Different highlighting techniques have different instructions, so be careful to listen to your stylist and ask questions. Here are some general guidelines you can follow:
- Dont use hot water to wash or rinse your hair, even when you havent used a product. The heat will open up the outer layer of the hair, creating an opening out of which the colouring can be washed. Use lukewarm or cold water to rinse, and keep it covered when youre not washing your hair.
- Some shampoo and conditioner treatments are specifically made for certain hair colours but can come in a wide variety of tones
- make sure to pick the one thats right for your hair!
- If youve found a great shampoo and conditioner, carefully read and follow the instructions because they can vary based on the formula. If you feel unsure about the product, dont hesitate to contact your hairstylist.
- Some more vibrant colours, like purple or red, will fade faster than more natural colours, so dont be alarmed.
- Dont wash your hair too often. The highlights are affected by just water, too, and using the product too often can stress your hair beyond its limits. Also, avoid excessive rinsings
- just tilt your head back and let the water run through your hair for several minutes to get the shampoo and conditioner out.
How do I prepare my hair for a wedding?
DO: SHAMPOO AND BLOWDRY YOUR HAIR THE NIGHT BEFORE THE WEDDING: Shampooing your hair the night or day before the wedding will ensure your hair is clean and free of oil or build up. If your hair is very oily, you can wait until the morning of, to complete this step. Your hair MUST be blow dried after shampooing. This will help smooth your hair and add shine. It will also help reduce frizz and create some natural volume in the hair.
DONT: GO TO SLEEP WITH YOUR HAIR WET/IN A MESSY BUN:
After shampooing your hair, please make sure it is completely dry before going to sleep. Sleeping with wet hair or hair up can not only damage or break your hair, but it can also cause your hair to become more frizzy and also can add unwanted textures to the hair- creating a less than perfect canvas to work with.

How soon before a wedding should you get highlights?
In most cases, two weeks is the sweet spot for bridal hair color. Youll have had a few shampoos since you left the salon, but not so many that your new hair color is starting to fade. Plus, youll have had some time to get used to any changes.
If youre planning to get highlights, this timeline holds strong. After two to three weeks, the color will still be fresh — but it wont appear too bright at the roots or around the face.
The caveat is if youre going for an all-over color thats on the darker side, or adding lowlights. In that case, you can get your color done one to two weeks before from the big day, as opposed to two to three weeks out.
How far out should you get your hair done before a wedding?
“For a pre-wedding haircut, a month or three weeks prior is good,” says Morwani. This way, you have enough time for your fresh cut to sit just right on your hair and you can always go for a quick trim a week or so prior if you feel the need to.
From multiple food tastings for every event, big or small, to even more fittings to ensure every outfit looks its best, there are a million things that will need your attention—and your bridal hairstyle is one of them. If you have a schedule of multiple events, you want to make sure your hair looks on-point every time. This only goes to show how essential it is that your hair is the right colour and cut just before you step into wedding week. Healthy hair that looks great by itself makes for the perfect foundation to play around with. Here, Mumbai-based celebrity hairstylists Anchal Morwani and Priyanka Borkar answer all your questions on having the perfect hair colour and cut before your wedding day.
How to choose the right hairstylist for your wedding hair colour, cut and style?. “Its important that whoever you choose to put you together for your wedding is someone you are comfortable with,” says Morwani. “Be it your makeup artist, your hairstylist or your hair colourist, it’s important to have free-flowing, two-way communication. They should be able to read you and understand your goals. This is possible through detailed chats and with reference pictures.”
How close to the wedding should you schedule your haircut?. Achieving your dream hairstyle for your wedding requires giving it some thought at least a couple of months in advance. Step one: make sure your trusted hairstylist isn’t booked out or on holiday when you need them the most. Have a chat with them in advance and take their suggestions into consideration to set up a haircut schedule. According to Borkar, “two months before the wedding is a good time to get your haircut.” If you’re deciding to let your hair grow out or maybe trying new layers, let it grow and get your first cut two months prior followed by frequent trims. “For a pre-wedding haircut, a month or three weeks prior is good,” says Morwani. This way, you have enough time for your fresh cut to sit just right on your hair and you can always go for a quick trim a week or so prior if you feel the need to. “Make sure you get a good haircut because layers are important for styling.”
📹 Safiya & Tyler’s Wedding Highlight Film
Hello! As some of you guys may know, we got married this past November! Here is a highlight reel of our wedding as some bonus …
This is one of the few that actually end up looking good. It’s so annoying that parents force their kids to have their hair a certain way. Altho I do wish they gave her actual curtain bangs, these are just face framing layers, with a bit of shag and a v in the back. I’ve been getting this cut for ages as well as my mom since we both have very dense and thick hair. Love this look on her 🤩
My mom also made me have my hair a certain way. My whole life I wanted to grow my bangs out but she said it would look bad because of the short wispy hairs that I had but when I got to college I grew my hair out and it looks really good without bangs. Never went back. I think that parents should do what a kid really wants especially with something like hair where if it didn’t look good I could’ve cut bangs again or like you she could’ve just cut your hair again, parents should let kids do what they really want.
PLEASE PLEASE ADD IN A SIDE BY SIDE COMPARISON!! I love these articles, but it would make them even better if you could give us a still article pose or photo from each side. You could have the person stand still and do a left side photo or article, then the right side, the back & lastly the front! Doing these before and after poses, really show the amazing work the hairdressers have done on the haircut & color. I would’ve loved to have seen the back of her hair in a still image instead of her shaking and moving. I really liked the cut and would’ve love to see how the hair sat naturally, without a bunch of flips and moving shots. 🥰 Q P Not only only does that showcase the haircut and color more, but it also lets us see the transformation much bette
Everyone with dark hair will get brassy because its lifting the hair, the only way to get rid of this is to tone it (blue shampoo) especially if it’s more orange and red and bleach it more, also side note, if you are going from dark to blonde, purple shampoo will not work on the red or orange tones, purple shampoo is for if you are already blonde but you wanna get rid of the yellow tones and then eventually go ashy or platinum, that’s a mistake people always make.
