When To Send Out Save The Dates For Wedding?

Sending out save-the-dates is a crucial part of your wedding timeline, and it’s recommended to start spreading the news six to eight months ahead of the ceremony. For local weddings, send the save-the-dates four to six months in advance, while for destination weddings, send them around the nine-month mark. For destination weddings, order the save-the-dates about 12 months before the wedding date and address and mail them as soon as possible but no later than nine months.

Save-the-dates should be sent between six and 12 months before the wedding date, with some couples opting to send them earlier, such as 9 to 12 months ahead of the wedding. This allows guests the most time to prepare and change their plans if necessary. If your venue and wedding date are confirmed, there’s no reason to delay sending out save-the-dates.

A wedding save-the-date is essentially the little sister to your official wedding invitation, and it should be sent out earlier than that. The general timeline for STDs is 8-12 months out. If most guests need to fly in and out, send them closer to one year in advance.

In general, order, design, and send out save-the-date cards at least 6 to 12 months in advance of your wedding date. If you miss the 6 to 12 months, you may need to send them sooner. Remember to keep guests informed about your wedding details and timelines, and avoid hounding them for an answer before the invites go out.

Is 12 months too early for save the dates?

Sending them too Late. As a general rule, its best to send Save the Dates 8 to 12 months prior to your wedding (send themearlier for a destination or holiday weekend). Given enough notice, you may be surprised by the distance that family and friends will come from to be able to attend! The more time your guests have, all the more opportunity to ask for time off work, confirm travel plans, save money and organise. Any later than this and they wont have enough lead time. Given that the only information you need on your Save the Dates are your names, wedding date (or dates, if its a weekend)and location – just the city and state – you dont even need to have your venue booked yet – it should be relatively easy to create your Save the dates. Including yourwedding websiteis a nice touch, but not necessary.

Not being clear about who is invited (and those plus ones). Its best to be as clear as possible about whos invited to the wedding, even this far in advance. By including the actual names of every intended guest on the envelope, youre less likely to have any assumed invitees or general confusion. If you know that you want one of your guests to bring a plus one at this stage, add this to your save the date card. It will help them to arrange hotel bookings, transport and so on, the earlier they know the better. Being clear about who is invited early on also gives parents time to plan for child care.

Sending a Save the Date Card but not an Invitation. Think carefully before sending out save the dates because they have to go to people that you are actually inviting to the wedding. You cant send a save a date to someone who you might only invite to the wedding ceremony at a later date. Once your Save the Dates are in the mail, theres no second guessing. So only send them to those guestsyou definitely want to be with you on your wedding day.

Is 4 months too early to send invites?

When should you send out wedding invitations?. In general, wedding invitations should be sent out 2-4 months before the wedding. This timing ensures that guests will have enough time to RSVP and that the couple has enough time to do a final head count and order anything thats needed for the day of the wedding based on that final number.

Traditionally, the advice from places like Brides Magazine and Etiquette Experts is to send out your invitations 6-8 weeks in advance. So you can send them as late as that timeframe still. However, especially post 2020, I have noticed that couples want to send out their wedding invitations even earlier than that. And I typically advise my clients to send them 3-4 months in advance of their weddings.

Here are a few reasons why sending them out earlier than 6-8 weeks is a good idea.

What is the etiquette of save-the-date?

DO include your names, the location and the exact wedding date. Save the venue as a surprise for the actual invitation and just include the city, state (and country, for overseas weddings).

DONT include reply cards. Unlike invitations, theres no need to include RSVP cards with your Save the Dates. Guests arent expected to respond until they receive the invitation, although some may.

DO add your wedding hashtag and wedding website. A hashtag is a great way to get guests excited, especially if you use it throughout your wedding planning. Let guests know what it is so they can follow along. Then include the URL to your wedding website so they can get further details if need be (and fun facts too).

DONT include registry information. Its generally considered poor taste to include any registry information on your Save the Dates. Instead, post the information on your wedding website or ask your parents or maid of honor to spread the word.

Can you send save the dates 5 months out?

Local vs. Destination Weddings. The 6-month rule for save the dates is a very general one, and may not apply to all weddings equally. Depending on where youre getting married, and who youre inviting, you might send out your save the dates anywhere between 4 months and 12 months before the big day.

If youre getting married in your hometown, and most of your guests live nearby, you can get away with sending out your wedding save the dates closer to your wedding day (4 months in advance). This is for the simple reason that your guests wont have to travel, or book accommodation. Theyll also only need one day off work for the wedding. But if your guests will need to travel for your wedding, its best to send your save the dates out earlier than you usually would.

For UK weddings where your guests will need to travel for more than an hour each way, wed recommend sending them 6-8 months in advance. For international weddings, where your guests will need to fly abroad, its best to give everyone 8-12 months notice. It can take quite some time to plan a trip to a foreign country, and theyll need plenty of notice to book at least a few days off work, if not a whole week.

Is 2 years too early to send save-the-date?

General wedding etiquette dictates that save the dates should be sent out six to nine months before the wedding date. That said, in recent years, wedding planning timelines have stretched and couples are choosing to send save the dates earlier — between nine and twelve months in advance — to ensure as many guests as possible can attend their big day.

To know if youre ready to send out your save the dates, youll want to have the following details ironed out (or at least mostly finalized).

  • Wedding date. This is the most important, and most obvious detail youll need to know before you send your save the dates.
  • Venue. Your venue will be the number one determining factor when it comes to choosing your wedding date. Because of this, most couples make sure to have their venue booked before they send out save the dates. That said, we dont recommend putting your venue on your save the date card — and well get into why later on in this article.
  • Vibe. Your save the date cards are the first impression of your big day. They set the tone for the celebration to come! So, youll want to have a good understanding of the vibe of your wedding as you pick them out. This theme, be it formal, playful, or non-traditional, will also help you narrow down the best save the date design for you.
  • Engagement Photos. Most couples opt to send photo save the dates, so youll want to have a beautiful, high-quality shot of you and your spouse-to-be to use on the card. When youre booking and taking your engagement photos, keep the overall vibe of your wedding in mind to ensure the photo you use on your save the date card helps communicate the spirit of your wedding.
  • Guest list. You dont need to know if youll be extending your second cousin a plus one at this stage of wedding planning, but youll need your guest list to be nearly finalized before you send out your save the date cards. This ensures you order enough cards — and that you dont send a save the date to anyone who may eventually get cut from your guest list.
