The first recorded native-English use of the word honeymoon appeared in 1804, in a translation of German folk stories. The term “honeymoon” was likely born from the customary European practice of donating an ample supply of mead (old-school booze made from fermented honey) to the newlywed couple. The term “honey-month” was first recorded in the 18th century in a collection of German folk stories by Johann Karl August Musäus.

The term “honeymoon” was not related to a vacation taken after one’s wedding, as it did not have the same meaning as today. It took almost two centuries for vacation to come into play, and it took another 200 years for the term to become a deliberate vacation only in 1791.

The idea of a “honeymoon” dates back as far as the fifth century in a number of European cultures when time was measured in moon cycles. As far as where the term honeymooncomes from, a few theories present a very different picture of the beloved vacation. The first, as Sara explains, stems from a tradition dating back to the 5th century. Back then, newlywed couples would drink mead, a honey-based alcohol, after their first moon together as a married couple. The mead was a gift from guests, and it was believed to have aphrodisiac properties to help withconception.

How many marriages end on the honeymoon?

• The Honeymoon period. This lasts on average from the date of the wedding until around the third wedding anniversary. Couples will have roughly 1% chance of divorcing in this time.
• The Seven Year Itch. The danger period from the 4th to the 7th anniversary of a marriage is when married couples are most at risk of divorce. The risk of divorce in any particular year during this time peaks at 3%. Half of all divorces will have taken place by the 9th wedding anniversary.

Interesting sidenote: short marriages are becoming rarer. Of those married in 2011, only 7% were divorced by their 5th wedding anniversary. This is a 50% lower divorce rate than for marriages in the 80s and 90s, where divorce rates averaged 11%.

Who came up with baby moon?

This gag-inducing term feels like a fairly recent fad but 1991 is the date of its earliest recorded use in English, according to Merriam Webster. It was coined by childbirth author Sheila Kitzinger who actually referred to it as the period of time parents spend alone with their offspring just after its birth.

Staycation. Theres sociological context behind the rise of this word, a portmanteau of stay and vacation. It spread like wildfire across the US in May of 2008 after a record spike in petrol prices made it too expensive for many Americans to travel far from their own home. Staycation, therefore, was a term used in an attempt to glamorise the somewhat grim predicament of having time off work without actually going anywhere.

Why is honeymoon Island called honeymoon?

In the late 1930s, a businessman named Clinton Washburn purchased the island. While lunching with a friend who was the editor of Life magazine, he made the comment that the island would make a wonderful site for a honeymoon. The Life editor ran the story and Honeymoon Island was born.
