A royal source has revealed that Princess Eugenie and her family moved into Frogmore Cottage just weeks after her cousin Prince Harry was evicted from the abandoned home in Windsor.
Harry and his wife Meghan Markle were booted out of their former home by King Charles the day after the publication of the Prince’s bombshell memoir Spare in January.
Frogmore was a wedding gift to the couple by Queen Elizabeth II but despite spending more than £2.4 million on renovations it is still ultimately owned by King Charles through the Crown Estate.
Where did Kate Middleton sleep the night before her wedding?
The Goring is a five-star luxury hotel in Belgravia, London, that has a long-standing connection to royalty. It has a royal warrant issued by the late Queen Elizabeth II and has been visited by every reigning monarch and prime minister since it first opened in 1910, a spokesperson previously told Insider via email.
The spokesperson added that the hotel was visited by Queen Elizabeth, and that Kate stayed in the hotels penthouse suite the night before her royal wedding on April 29, 2011.
I visited the hotel during Queen Elizabeths Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June.
What is happening to Frogmore Cottage?
The annual Sovereign Grant report shows that Frogmore Cottage remains vacant and a palace official confirmed that Harry and Meghan had “only just left” and packed up their things.
Prince Harry and Meghan paid back the £2.4 million that had been spent from public funds on renovating the cottage before they moved in.
They agreed a reduced rent, when they relocated to the US, after offering to pay the refurbishment costs themselves.
Sir Michael Stevens, the Keeper of the Privy Purse who is in charge of royal finances, admitted that the renovations of Frogmore Cottage had left the Crown Estate, which owns the property, with “an enhanced asset”.
