Banns, or banns, are public announcements in a Christian parish church or town, usually read twice a week apart, in the parishes of both bride and groom, before the wedding in the third week. Before 1983, canon law required banns to be announced or asked in the home parishes of both parties on three Sundays or Holy Days of Obligation before the marriage. The legal status of banns within the Church of England is governed by the Marriage Act of 1949 as modified by the Church of England Marriage (Amendment) Measure 2012. Most marriages require that banns are read out in church for three Sundays during the three months before the wedding.
Legislation regarding the banns of marriage is located in a subsection of the code entitled, “Pastoral Care and the Prerequisites for the Celebration of Marriage.” To have your wedding banns published, visit your parochial office at least three months before the wedding. This will give you enough time to register, undergo counseling, schedule and attend canonical interviews, and finally have your marriage banns published.
