Every Dutch notary is a member of The Royal Dutch Association of Civil-Law Notaries (KNB) and their duties are different from those of other legal practitioners, such as Dutch lawyers, attorneys, or tax advisers. Most importantly, notaries are independent and are required to act impartially.

Notaries in the Netherlands have a law degree and may specialize in certain areas such as family law, real-estate or company law in the Netherlands. Whenever necessary, Dutch notaries may employ the services of more specialized legal practitioners, such as a Dutch law firm. What is the purpose of The Hague apostille?

Legalization validates a foreign public document by verifying the authenticity of the signature and the legitimacy of the signing authority. Legalization does not certify the content of the document.

The Hague Apostille is a simplified procedure that has the same purpose as legalization and is applied between the States party to the Convention of 5 October 1961, which abolished the requirement to legalize foreign public documents.

In general, unless a specific rule provides exemption from this obligation, all foreign public documents must be legalized or apostilled to be valid in Spain, and all Spanish public documents must be legalized or apostilled to be valid abroad.

  • Does the county office in the US usually inform you about Apostille? I recently got married to an American in Utah, and only back in Finland did I find out that I need an apostille authentication from US officials. The county people told us absolutely nothing like this even though they knew we were going to send the certificate to Finnish officials.
