Where Do Arranged Marriages Occur?

Arranged marriage is a type of marital union where the bride and groom are primarily selected by individuals other than the couple themselves, particularly family members such as parents. Arranged marriages have roots as early as the Vedic period and are most common in Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Pakistan, and South Korea. They encompass a wide variety of procedures, cultural customs, length of courtship, and practical and spiritual reasons for matching.

Arranged marriages are prevalent in Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, with the tradition predominating in Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. In India, arranged marriages still remain the majorly preferred way for Indians to enter into matrimony. In a 2018 survey of more than 160,000 households, 93% of married Indians said that theirs was an arranged marriage.

Child marriage and forced marriage are violations of child protection and human rights, compromising a child’s development and severely limiting their health. Arranged marriages can create feelings of alienation, as everyone in the family wants to leave a mark on the new relationship.

The tradition of arranged marriage is most commonly found in eastern-based cultures, including Indian, Japanese, and Chinese cultures. Arranged marriages have historically been prominent in many cultures and are largely practiced in South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the United States.

Consentsual arranged marriages are legal in the United States, and they have existed for centuries in Bangladesh. Arranged marriages are voluntarily accepted by marital agents on the basis of legitimate parental guidance and authority.

Does South Korea have arranged marriages?

Love matches are no longer frowned upon, but arranged marriages are still more common. Couples and their parents have formal meetings infancy tearooms to size each other up, and some go through dozens of these meetings before finding a partner. Even couples who marry for love often ask their parents to arrange the marriage to observe traditional good form.

Arranged marriages continue to be popular because young men and women in Korea find casual socializing awkward and often feel they lack the experience to choose their own partners. Although casual dating is now more common, most interaction between young men and women occurs in groups. Elaborate games like lotteries are sometimes used to match people; young Koreans find the potential rejection involved in asking for a date overwhelming. Arranged marriages also seem safe because the go-between clearly appraises the social backgrounds of the bride and groom. After their engagement, a couple will date so they know each other well by the time they marry. This pattern is so common thatKoreans assume that a young couple who date regularly will be married.

A study of the large city of Taegu done in the 1970s found that 83% of young married couples had arranged marriages. The husbands in arranged marriages and in love matches were about equally satisfied. Wives in love matches were only slightly more satisfied than those in arranged marriages.

In spite of the recent changes, fundamental characteristics of the traditional Korean family remain. Each person in the family still has a clearly defined role, each dependent on others within the family unit.Koreans adapt their traditional ideas of spiritual and biological interdependence within the family to new conditions. The modern short story, Sufferings for Father and Son, by Han Keun-chan illustrates a specific case. A father picks up his son returning from the Korean War.At the railway station the father sees that his son has had one of his legs amputated. The father himself lost an arm during forced labor under the Japanese. Walking home they come to a stream. The father loads his son on his back and with one remaining arm, holds his sonsone remaining leg, and whispers, you do what you can do by sitting, and I will do what I can by running about.

What age do girls marry in Iran?

Religion: Sharia-based Iranian law states that the legal age for marriage is 13 for girls and 15 for boys, but marriages can still be carried out at a younger age with the consent of fathers and permission from court judges. This has enabled a culture whereby child marriage is considered somewhat socially acceptable.

Family honour: In some parts of the country, families marry off their young daughters to improve their position in their tribe. Girls are also married off early to prevent them from entering a relationship and dishonouring the family.

Displacement: Iran hosts almost one million Afghan refugees, in addition to around 2.5 million Afghan residents. Afghanistan has high rates of child marriage, and forced displacement can put girls at an increased risk of being married off due to the lack of protection systems and because families see child marriage as a way to cope with greater economic hardship and to protect girls from violence.

Does Russia have arranged marriages?

In Europe, during the late 18th century and early 19th century, the literary and intellectual movement of romanticism presented new and progressive ideas about love marriage, which started to gain acceptance in society. In the 19th century, marriage practices varied across Europe, but in general, arranged marriages were more common among the upper class. Arranged marriages were the norm in Russia before early 20th century, most of which were endogamous.38 Child marriages were common historically, but began to be questioned in the 19th and 20th century. Child marriages are often considered to be forced marriages, because children (especially young ones) are not able to make a fully informed choice whether or not to marry, and are often influenced by their families.39.

In Western countries, during the past decades, the nature of marriage—especially with regard to the importance of marital procreation and the ease of divorce—has changed dramatically, which has led to less social and familial pressure to get married, providing more freedom of choice in regard to choosing a spouse.40.

Historically, forced marriage was also used to require a captive (slave or prisoner of war) to integrate with the host community, and accept his or her fate. One example is the English blacksmith John R. Jewitt, who spent three years as a captive of the Nootka people on the Pacific Northwest Coast in 1802–1805. He was ordered to marry, because the council of chiefs thought that a wife and family would reconcile him to staying with his captors for life. Jewitt was given a choice between forced marriage for himself and capital punishment for both him and his father (a fellow captive). Reduced to this sad extremity, with death on the one side, and matrimony on the other, I thought proper to choose what appeared to me the least of the two evils (p154).41.

Arranged marriages are believed to have initially risen to prominence in the Indian subcontinent when the historical Vedic religion gradually gave way to classical Hinduism (the c. 500 BCE period), substantially displacing other alternatives that were once more prominent.34 In the urban culture of modern India, the differentiation between arranged and love marriages is increasingly seen as a false dichotomy with the emergence of phenomena such as self-arranged marriages and free-choice on the part of the prospective spouses.56.

Historyedit. The Indian subcontinent has historically been home to a wide variety of wedding systems. Some were unique to the region, such as Swayamvara (which was rooted in the historical Vedic religion and had a strong hold in popular culture because it was the procedure used by Rama and Sita). In a swayamvara, the girls parents broadcast the intent of the girl to marry and invited all interested men to be present in a wedding hall on a specific date and time.37.
