I know of a couple who were full cousins and married, and they had two children. The first-born had very bad vision due to defects in his eyes. The couple went on to have a second child and one of the reasons for that decision was to disprove the assertion that the cause of the first child’s ailment was due to the parents being closely related. The more closely related you are, the more likely you both carry the same “defective” recessive allele which is extremely rare in the overall population. In most cases, that allele would be masked by the “healthy” dominant allele and the carrier appear to be healthy. It would be highly unlikely (though not impossible) for both unrelated parents to carry the same “defective allele. However, kids from closely related parents will have a much greater chance of inheriting the genetic defect because there’s a greater chance for them to get both recessive “defective” allele with no “healthy” allele to back them up. In simple terms, nothing’s certain, but incest puts their offsprings at a MUCH greater risk. A risk that you don’t want to take.
