I love traveling and perusal travel articles. Well done. I went to The Netherlands in December 1998 and loved every minute. I went to several museums but the most memorable place was the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. To walk through and visualize what happened in that house was emotionally very moving. My take-away from my visit there was: beautiful, friendly people and a lot of bicycles. Oh, I helped make (and eat) oliebolen.

It is largely an open air museum just as The Netherlands Open Air Museum. It is a cultural history museum in Arnhem in the province of Gelderland. This Arnhem museum is the most visited museum in the Netherlands outside of Amsterdam. The museum gives a picture of life in the Netherlands through the ages. Deventer, Leiden, Hoorn en Maastricht and the village Twisk are also very pretty 🤩
A great selection indeed. Of course because i’m a dutchmen I can tell you of much more great places to visit. For example The Hague, in my opnion if you visit Holland then you have to visit The Hague. This because it is the real capitol of Holland. Amsterdam only got the titel because it was the biggest city in that time and the brother of Napoleon wanted to live there. Butt al of the fundamental important things are in The Hague where it al started. The Royal Family is there, our government with the prime-minister, justice department and head courtroom. So maybe in Part 2? Limburg (Valkenburg, Maastricht) and the beautiful nature of The Veluwe or Utrechtse Heuvelrug (Austerlitz). Love to see more article’s. Great job already..

Also very nice to visit: the west coast of North-Holland. Around the places Bergen, Schoorl, Groet, there is a very nice piece of nature reserve called ‘Schoorlse Duinen’. The villages of Schoorl and Bergen are very beautiful to get lost in on your bicycle and the area around them are famous for the beautiful cycling routes through fields and dunes.
Haarlem would be my nr.1 recommendation for anyone visiting the Netherlands. Haarlem is fabulous, there is so much to see, with everything within walking distance. Most importantly, much quieter than nearby touristy places. There is also something very warm and friendly about the place. Another recommendation that is not on this list is Enkhuizen. Enkhuizen’s Zuiderzee Musuem is remarkable. A town with a very rich history. It is also less touristy than some of the places that are on this list.

This is a good list but also the more touristy list still. There are a ton of other nice places (look at the reaction of Jacobus Johannes) and very attractive regions (Nieuwkoopse plassen, Betuwe, Peel, Loonse duinen, The region near Nijmegen, Veluwe, IJsselmeer and Flevoland, The Friese meren and the 11 steden of Friesland a.o. ) The Netherlands might be a small country but it is PACKED with places that are waiting to be seen..
Actually I was surprised how well you pronounced some of the names. Well done you. Even outside of this list there is so much to see. Everything is small in the Netherlands (except the people). old historical towns are sooo widespread. If you are looking for a cycling Holiday, the Netherlands is probably one of the best places to visit.
My husband was born and raised in the Netherlands, in Noort Holland, not far from Haarlem. If you like the sea, a visit to Zandvoort is also recommended. One of the attractions at Zanze Schance is the Klompenmakerij, or the klompen ( wooden shoe) makers. Certainly worth the visit. There are some wonderful markets in other towns, too.
That’s nice! These are all quite close and mainly in the north-western part of the country. In addition don’t miss Den Haag and beach Bloemendaal & beach Scheveningen. You are missing a couple of provinces tho: SW: Zeeland’s Deltaworks are on UNESCO’s list as well. And Zeeland’s Middelburg is a beautiful monumental city. SE: Maastricht in Limburg is an extraordinary Dutch village on the Maas worth visiting. Don’t forget to visit Valkenburg and Arcen when you’re there. S: Den Bosch & Breda are lovely burgundy cities. Central/east: There’s beautiful cycling and affordable airbnbs at the national parks ‘Veluwe’ and the ‘Utrechtse heuvelrug’. Quite some airbnbs provide bicycles. NE: visiting the Wadden Islands by ferry is absolutely worth it, Vlieland and Schiermonnikoog are car free. And there is a change that we have to give up on them in the next couple of decades. And in Friesland lives a whole sailing culture, visit Sneek or Harlingen (tall ship races). We have quite a decent school system and they teach us English in primary school so most Dutch speak quite good English. In the East German is also quite recently spoken and in the bigger cities you’ll quite often meet someone speaking some Spanish or French. And Amsterdam is one of the cities with the most nationalities living there worldwide. And, as I suppose as in all countries, the people in the people in general are more often highly educated, politically more left orientated and quite focussed on sustainability. All super nice.
That’s a nice list of alternatives for Amsterdam, which is so crowded with tourists that life in the city centre isn’t much fun for those who live there. And the country has so much more to offer! But what do you mean by ‘war cellars’ in Utrecht? They were built for storage! Traders would have their homes at street level with cellars at canal level, stretching from the waterside to underneath the house, thus connecting house and canal. In case of war, they would have been useless, I’m afraid.

Very nice collection of places to visit. But also, except maybe for Bourtange in the north east of the Netherlands, the places the majority of tourist visit. I always miss the beautiful places in the north east like: Leeuwarden, Groningen or Appingedam with it’s hanging kitchens. The province of Drenthe with it’s extensive bicycle roads.
This is all in North and South Holland. They are 2 provinces of the beautiful Netherlands. Also visit Spakenburg, an old fishing village near Amersfoort. On the old Zuiderzee. We now have the Spakenburg days on Wednesdays. And the 1st Saturday of September is Fishing Day. Then Spakenburg goes back in time.
Zaanse Schans doesn’t really sound French if you pronounce it the Dutch way obviously 😉 Cool list though! I would have added Naarden, Heusden or Zutphen rather than Texel or Boutange. Look for those places if you’d like to know more gems to visit whenever that is possible again. Naarden is a fortified small place east of Amsterdam. Heusden has an old vibe as well, also fortified. Zutphen is on the IJssel river in the east of the Netherlands. It was part of the Hanse. Zutphen once was completely surrounded by brick city walls and some parts and gates can still be seen.
nice article but, as others allready noticed, it contains only points of interest in the western part of the Netherlands. This western part is called Holland (South-Holland and North-Holland). That are just two of twelve provinces. Because the Netherlands is a very small country it is possible to travel to other provinces in just one or two hours. Cities like Arnhem in the east, and Maastricht in de south. Breda near the Belgium border, places of history with castles and medieval towns. The province of Noord Brabant just under Rotterdam with his forest country or province of Limburg with his hills and valleys. A whole other countryside than Holland. In the North you have cities like Groningen and Leeuwarden with rich history and at the south-west coast you find the quiet province of Zeeland that contains of Islands interconnected true bridges.

Then you see those same Chinese people. but go 2 blocks further. Then you will discover the good life in the Netherlands.

I have to be honest and say that all of these places were nice but lack the grandeur of the most strikingly beautiful nature found in other countries. However, the Netherlands has FOOD, LOTS of food, and for that reason alone it is in an enviable position. If as a country I could wish for just one natural resource, agriculture would be at the top of the list.
Well you forgot 3/4 part of the Netherlands. What about Maastricht in Limburg which was around in the roman times as Mosa trajectum and being of Catholic part of the counntry supports beautiful churches to see. You also have the “3 landenpunt” a place were you can litteraly be in 3 countries in 3 steps (also in Limburg). It’s were Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium connect. Or Eindhoven in North Brabant, the birthplace of the vcr tapes and CD’s by Philips, which had become great by manufacturing lightbulbs. It has is nickname Lightcity and the event called Glow is very fun to see. In the East we have Nijmegen (also around sinds the Roman empire) And in Friesland there is a planatarium in a house. This is today still very accurate. and beuatifull to see.
Maastricht was probably my favorite place in the Netherlands. That or Hoorne, or was it oud-zuilen part of haarlem? I spent 16 days in the Netherlands total… visited almost every province there execpt drenthe, zelande, and flevoland. Holland is nice yes. But limburg is much less touristy and so beautiful.
Your pronunciations were really good for a non-Dutch speaker! Only the “Zaanse Schans” had a bit too much of a French pronunciation. In reality, it doesn’t sound French at all if a Dutch person says it. Still I respect the effort. In an attempt to describe the pronunciation: the ‘aa’ sound is pretty similar to the one in ‘naan bread’. The ‘ch’ is pronounced in with a hard throaty sound, like those that exist in the Arabic pronunciation of ‘Achmed’. Except this ‘ch’ also has the ‘s’ sound in front. This makes ‘schans’ sound way less french than the way it’s pronounced in this vid.
And The Hague/Scheveningen, Rotterdam, Katwijk/ Noordwijk, Harderwijk, Amersfoort, Hoorn, Deventer, Waddeneilanden, Leeuwarden, Groningen, Zwolle, Deventer, Den Bosch, Veere/Domburg, Maastricht, what did I miss also? and all reachable without travelling half a day like in other countries BUT it’s becoming a very crowdy country…
A little bit a lazy overview almost all in Holland. You missed the cities in the East and South. I just mention the University cities of Groningen; Nijmegen and Maastricht. Maastricht a city with a large part of the medieval defensive wall and towers still intact; with a bridge build between 1280-1298 over the Meuse river and with a church from the 11th century. Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands; the city of the Tenth Roman Legion Gemina defending the city against the Germans and ~2000 years later the 101st Airborne Division conquering and freeing the city from the Germans during Operation Market Garden in WW2.
The only pronounciation you did wrong was Zaanse Schans. The ‘ch’ sound is the same as the ‘g’ which does not make it French-ish at all 😅. I understand these are typically tourists spots, but the city of Zwolle is nice as well and I definitely recommend my own province Flevoland especially when when you want to see the differences between sea level and living under the sea level just ride on the dikes and you are all good. Do you want to see windmills in a row, but no tourists? Go to Molenkade in the city of Alkmaar which is a nice city too or Noordervaart in the village of Schermerhorn

Number 3: Yes we have windmills but so do other nations. Move along now, nothing to see. Number 4: No matter the season, bring fishing boots and a steady heart and maybe a trail finder. Number 5: Miniature Amsterdam indeed apart from brothels. Number 6: Do only visit by plane or do not enjoy the full scale of the view. Number 7: Use it only as a gatherpoint or meeting point cause its centralised area, and do not go out in the dawn/dark. Number 8: Use it to get to know cheese better or learn to enjoy cheese and do not go out after dawn/dark. Number 9: 500 feet of Fishy things. Go here as an interlude to some place nicer/bigger/better. Number 10: Go here if you want to see where all these pitoresque postcard pictures are took. I am from the Netherlands and I love it and been to all these places. There is so much more and there are many things one would not want to see. Use my point of view as a guide line.
Delft relaxing? As a former citizen of Delft, I am getting overstimulated only thinking about my time living there. If you are able to relax in a city that sounds like a warzone combined with 24/7/52 carousel and church bell noises, the scent of rotting fish and traffic gasses, and lots of detailed buildings/street ornaments/art works/traffic that keeps moving around and close to colliding with you at all times, Delft is definitely your city to go to for relaxation 🤣🧘🏼♂️🧘🏼♀️
Leiden is, in my opinion (obviously), a better version of Haarlem and just a flat-out better visit than Gouda. It also shares the trait with the latter that it’s a good hub in the middle of other big cities with easy public transit options to those. I don’t know, I guess Gouda is a tad smaller, quieter and more sleepy if you’re into that kind of vibe, whereas Leiden has more restaurant/bar options and a wider array of museums, including a number of quite big ones. But perhaps it’s not as friendly and “chill” on the flipside. Volendam (/Edam) was a nice inclusion, good call.
A very nice presentation of so much that the Netherlands has to offer BUT!!!! as so often happens with these articles, the back ground music is too loud and distracting and serves no useful purpose other than to encourage the listener to turn off the article before completion. Otherwise a very watchable article with sound turned off but then there is no narrative.
My hometown Dordrecht is definitely a hidden gem, situated between Rotterdam and Breda. We have a beautiful historical city center and lots of water. Because its actually an island, surrounded by 3 rivers. The best view of the city you will get from the water, coming from Rotterdam and Kinderdijk, which is nearby.

Ik mis heel veel. Nu richt het zich noord en Zuid Holland met hele kleine uitstapjes naar andere plekken. Ik mis Limburg – Maastricht, Gelderland – Nijmegen, Overijssel – Deventer……etc teveel hoogtepunten om op te noemen. Nederland is meer dan Amsterdam, de bollenstreek, de Zaanse schans of De Dom. Trek er op uit en laat je beter voorlichten dan dit filmpje
