Where to steam your wedding dress?
Minor Wrinkles. For minor wrinkles, Karen Jean-Aimée, director of client relations at Madame Paulette, swears by the old hang on the bathroom door during a steamy shower trick. Think of it as creating your own steam room. Cover a bathroom floor with towels and run a very hot shower, allowing the room to fill with steam. (Just dont close the door, or the dress may get overly damp.) Next, wrap your arm in a dry, white towel and run it down the length of the gown, smoothing out any wrinkles. This method is much less likely to leave water spots or iron impressions than a home steamer or iron.
Creased. If your dress is particularly creased, try a handheld steamer. Just remember: You never want to apply steam directly to your dress, as water droplets can leave spots. Steaming through a clean white cloth is safer.
Hand Press. Taffeta, dupioni, and shantung are fabrics I would only hand-press with a dry iron, says Cacky Rivers, owner of Cackys Bride Aid in Charleston, South Carolina. Steaming may wrinkle them even more. Use a clean pressing cloth for heat protection.
Is it okay to steam a wedding dress?
Certain fabrics, like satin, silk, tulle, and polyester, are all safe to steam to remove wrinkles and folds. Other wedding dress materials, however, should not be steamed. For example, embroidery tends to shrink when exposed to heat, and others like shantung, dupioni, and taffeta may become more wrinkled from being steamed.
Therefore, if you decide to steam your dress yourself, always make sure the material and other anatomical elements of the gown wont be ruined in the process. If youre still unsure whether your dress can be steamed, its best to ask your tailor.
Make Sure Your Dress is Packed Correctly. When you finally pick up your dress for your big day, youll want to ensure that the bridal salon packages the garment correctly after your final fitting. Bridal salons typically steam the gown, then fill the bodice with cardboard and tissue paper to preserve its form and shape.
Do hotels steam wedding dresses?
After you have arrived at your hotel, your dress will probably need a little refresher to get rid of any potential wrinkles that came about on the flight. Most hotels and resorts offer pressing and steaming, but again: this is something youll need to plan ahead for. Wedding dresses take some time to steam and depending on their material the onsite facilities may or may not be sufficient. You may need to send out your dress for steaming once you arrive to your destination. If this is the case, be sure to research options ahead of time and make an advance appointment to ensure availability at the time you need it. As an additional option, you can try to also pack a portable steamer – though these are never as powerful as commercial steamers, so expect limited results. It is recommended to put a cotton sock or towel over the head of the steamer to avoid water droplets on your dress. You can also try other tricks such as steaming your dress in a bathroom with a hot shower or using some wrinkle releaser (be sure to test this on a part of the material that wont show first, though!).
If youre early in your dress selection process and it is possible to do so: you might consider both the material and the size of your dress in your selection process. A large, poufy ballgown is more difficult to travel with than many other choices you could make. Additionally, many types of lace are very forgiving when it comes to wrinkles, so you may want to see about gowns with materials that dont show wrinkles as much. Be strategic about your selection, and ask your sales reps about their recommendations in regards to this as well.; As with anything else related to your wedding on the big day itself, it is always good to keep things in perspective. You will probably notice any issues with your dress 1000 times more than your friends or family will – and very often the things you notice wont show up at all in your photos. If there are some pesky wrinkles that wont seem to come out, consider if thats something you can let go of – especially keeping in mind you actually have to WEAR the dress, which requires movement and will cause some wrinkles as well 🙂;
If youre able to plan ahead and keep all of this tips in mind, your process should go much more smoothly! Cheers to a beautiful wedding day and Bon Voyage for your destination event!

Do seamstresses steam dresses?
Before heading down the aisle, youll want to make sure your dress is wrinkle-free and aisle-ready by giving her a good steam. If youre getting married locally, your alterations vendor may steam your gown for you before sending her home with you. If youre jetting off for a destination wedding, the packages at most resorts will include a dress steaming. Even with the best fresh steam, however, there will typically be one or two tiny wrinkles that will rear their heads before the wedding day. To help combat this, we always recommend having a travel steamer on hand to help get the gown in tip-top shape! Because travel steamers can leak on occasion, we recommend steaming through a white washcloth. This will prevent any water spots on your gown! Starting on the front of the gown, youll want to pull the steamer down from top to bottom from the inside of the gown. Keeping the steamer underneath the dress layers allows excess steam to be trapped in the layers, helping it to release more wrinkles in the drying process. Once youve finished the front of the gown, turn it around to catch the back- doing it in this order will prevent the train from being crumpled up as its drying. Leave the gown to hang as high up as possible as it dries, releasing any additional wrinkles left on the gown. After that, shell be fresh, wrinkle-free, and ready to walk down the aisle!
- Takeaway Tips:. Check with your seamstress/planner/venue to see if they offer a steaming package. Thats always the easiest option.
- Steam with a white washcloth or sheet over the steamer head to prevent water spots.
- Always steam from the INSIDE/UNDERSIDE of the gown, top to bottom, front to back.
- Let the gown hang as high/long as possible to allow it to dry without causing additional wrinkles.
