Which County Do You Get Your Marriage License In?

Marriage licenses can be obtained at various locations, such as city halls, town or city clerks offices, or the marriage license bureau in the county where you plan to marry. In some cases, couples may be able to purchase a marriage license from their local or surrounding municipality. To obtain a marriage license, you will need to complete an application and choose your marriage location. A marriage license is valid for 3 months from the date it is issued, and a marriage ceremony may take place the same day.

In Ontario, couples must apply for a marriage license at municipal offices and city halls. In Georgia, a marriage license costs between $56.00 to $82.00 and must be used within 60 days. To make a marriage license valid, you must hold a marriage ceremony and get married. The bottom portion of the license is then mailed into the Clerk of the Superior Court by the person who performed the ceremony.

Some counties have different requirements for applying for a marriage license, such as Wisconsin, Texas, North Carolina, Indiana, and California. In Mississippi, you must first apply for a marriage license, which costs $20.00 to $23.00 and has unlimited time to use it. In Indiana, both you and your future spouse must appear in person at the Clerks Office in an Indiana county where one of you lives.

Marriage licenses are issued by counties and can be purchased at any county clerks. If you obtained your marriage license in another county, you must apply for a license in your home county. You will not receive a copy of your marriage license after you have been married unless you request and pay for a certified copy from the County Clerk or County.

U.S. embassy and consulate personnel cannot perform marriages in foreign countries. Local law decides who can perform marriages. Often, it is local civil or religious officials who perform marriages. Marriages performed overseas are valid in the country where they occur as long as they follow local law. Whether another country recognizes your foreign marriage depends on its own law.

Getting married overseas can be time-consuming and expensive. The process is different from country to country, and some need preparation. If you plan to marry in a foreign country, find out the requirements of that country before you travel.

  • Residence in a country for a specified time before you can get married there.
  • Blood tests.
  • Age requirements.
  • Parental consent.
  • Proof of the end of any previous relationship. This could include death or divorce certificates.
  • Documents translated into the local language and authenticated.
  • An Affidavit of Eligibility to Marry. Some countries need this as proof of legal ability to enter into a marriage contract. The United States cannot attest to your marital status. Contact the embassy or tourist information bureau of the country where you plan to marry. They can tell you about the specific requirements. If you are already abroad, you may wish to consult with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
