I went to Koh Phangan for a visit, rented a motorbike. I was out all day. Then stopped to eat. I was horrified, my wallet was gone. No money, No credit cards. Lost on the highway somewhere. A very good summary of some beautiful places. I think the criteria must vary by time. It’s not the Top 10 Beaches, so it has to be more than 1 day. The periods could be 1 week, 3 months, … 1 year … life & retirement. The small islands are picture-perfect for an instagrammable week. As the time period goes up, so must the size of the island, the population, and hence, services available. Samui and Phuket have the size and variety for a long stay,\r including east/west coast sunrise/sunset beaches,\r mountains, waterfalls and jungle hiking,\r as well as the intl airports, large towns, medical facilities,\r magnificent temples, festivals, shopping malls,\r diverse restaurants, expat communities (pro or con :)\r watersport activities and entertainment districts. The main drawbacks are too many tourists in high season, and high prices, partly to prey on that tourist demand ( Eat, Prey, Love 🙂 but enacted by monopolistic local family mafias (e.g. only one airline flies to Samui; only one taxi co. in Samui; the infamous Phuket taxi mafia, min fare 200 baht even for 1km).

Having been to Thailand 4 times, the islands I have been to are Koh Lipe twice (the first time was a day trip from Langkawi in Malaysia), Phuket, Railey (although this is really a peninsula), Koh Muk once, Koh Phi Phi on day trips and 3 nights too, Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, Koh Yao Noi, Koh Lanta, Koh Kradan, Koh Hong and Koh Ngai. I’ll be honest that I’m not a fan of Phuket although Similan Island is nice though but I love Krabi. My favourite Thai Islands are Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lipe, Koh Samui, Railey and Koh Tao I want to do one more visit to Thailand and go to Chiang Mai as well as Koh Chang and Koh Kood
Phuket,because hand on heart has to be some of my best holidays iv’e ever had .Koh Samui for the same reason a close 2nd,But Koh Tao for me,even though it was on a day trip,But it’s paradise before your eyes i kid you not 🙏But if you are going from Koh Samui to spend the day there it’s a journey and a half on a speed boat so make sure the weather forecast is good .Trust me .you wont want to do that journey if the weather is iffy .Thanks Paddy for reminding me over the last couple of years why i love Thailand 🙏

I also love Samui… but its become so over populated in the past decade or so that i tend to stay away. My favourite beach is just a few km North of Nathon. Theres some lovely quiet lttle resorts and beach houses to rent. A few good restaurants and cafes and a great place to watch the magnificent sunsets. I even like Nathon itself. Way more laid back than the rest of the island.

Unfortunately, we could not be there for two long years, but when we resolve our affairs at home in the Czech Republic, we will soon move there permanently. Leave Lipe quiet and uncrowded. 😝 Personally I love Lipe because it’s not a party island. It’s small and so beautiful. It’s not commercialized and over developed. So few people have been there so it’s not over saturated on social media with pictures from the same spots like Phi Phi. I was there end of March and it was so empty it was wonderful. Going back to Samui next month after being inspired by your articles to explore more of the island.

Thanks for your impressions. I ve been traveling Thailand and SEA for 20 years. It’s depending on what you searching for. A lot of islands but also beaches on the mainland are waiting for you. But … I would never do Samui on #1 … it’s changed so much in the wrong direction. Everything is about money. So most of the signs in front of stores and restaurants are written in Russian for first language. That’s only okay if you’re Russians. 🤷🏽 Your Choice is a good one… but I missed Koh Bulon 😉 Thanks for your sympathetic vids …. go on, have a good life 🤙🏽
Been going to Samui for 20 years now . Have visited 4 others on your list but Samui will always be my favorite as well . If you know your way around the island you can spend as little as you want for accommodations or as much as you could spend anywhere, like at a Four Seasons which the island has . I stayed in an airbnb 2 miles to Chewang Beach ( the best beach as far as white sand, swimming and laying under a palm tree for shade ) for $ 400 a month . Theres plenty of action if you want or quiet places to go to as well . Fishermans Village in Bophut is a must to visit as well Enjoy Samui . Plus if you live in north as I do, there is ( covid depending ) a direct flight daily from Chiang Mai which you just can’t beat . In 1 1/2 hours you can go from the mountains to our favorite island and be swimming in the afternoon in the Gulf of Thailand !!

We’re looking for a company that could set up everything else we want to do like for example someone to give us Private airport pick-up service in Phuket with a guide each location and tickets and set up for elephant jungle safari, boat ride to Maya bay, Emerald lagoon and Tiger cave temple by private car. Paddy, Me and my wife (30 year anniversary in June) are coming to Bangkok for 12 days at the end of June. We have never been to Thailand before and we want to tour Bangkok and a couple of islands but cannot figure out how many days we should stay in Bangkok to see the city and temples before heading to the beach and cannot figure out which islands we should try to see on this trip. Interesting. We didn´t like Koh Samui at all 😀 but we didn´t stay there for long, that´s true. Phangan is our favourite! But not for fullmoon! Haha. We prefer conscious parties without any alcohol and drugs! Koh Phangan is amazing for yoga, meditation, vegan food and amazing workshops and cool, open-minded people and ecstatic dance!! 💜
If planning a trip to Thailand, don’t book too many places in advance, hopping is not a good idea unless you have a whole year. “Hopping” to different islands for just a few days, you will only see more waiting, more expensive taxis and packed ferries, not the beaches you came for!Top tip if coming to Thailand for the first time, yes book Bangkok and then have fun travelling to an island, then decide if you want to leave or see more, you can decide when you actually know! Travel is very easily arranged here (don’t use 1togoAsia) and accommodation is always available at all times of year. The weather can change and ferries don’t always run, so don’t overbook. We have seen so many holidays end in disaster when it’s all pre booked. 2 days, here, 2 days there is not a good idea!
If your ever in Khon Kaen again you should check out king Kong Restaurant and do their Godzilla fire wings challenge. They will be promoting it soon and they have a chilli spice mix that will blow even the best challengers brain out 😝 They would be happy to have you try the challenge maybe for a local charity and give something back to the community.
I would not say Koh Lipe is quiet. It depends on when you get there. I have a friend living in Thailand and when he did go there, he run away after one night because it was so full of people. I had the luck to be there on low season and just after a week of rain where they had floods as well so I really had the island almost for myself 🙂 The same is probably true for Koh Maak ( I was there at the end of March 2020 when the lockdown started). Sure less than Lipe but I think it can be quiet busy there as well. Maybe a little warning for Koh Maak, there is only 1 ATM in the whole island and it can be broken/empty for days (what the locals told me) so be sure to have reserves. Apart that, avoid the most top right corner of the island and the resort there. It was my worst experience in Thailand and talking with the taxi there, it told me that usually when they take foreigners up there. they wait around because it’s almost sure they will check out soon after. “The best islands”…well, it depends for what. If you ask me, Lipe would be number one if looking only at the sand there apart that it’s expansive. Probably the best sand in all of Thailand but again, it depends when you go to visit. Example, the sand i saw in your article @Maya Bay, looked much better as when i was there I think about 7 years ago. At that time, it wasn’t really sand, it was mashed corals. In Koh Tao, it’s no wonder that the sea recovered if tons of pollution are not washed into it by hordes of tourists. Even if that viewpoint at the beginning of your segment look amazing, I didn’t see nice beaches there.
A bit late to this article, but having seen many of your Thailand vlogs, your top two surprised me. You have gone for the most touristy islands with international airports. Are you sure you’re not being sponsored by TUI?😂. As a massive fan of Thailand I am often asked where to go and I generally tell people to avoid those two mass tourism islands and go for the more intimate ones. My favourite is high on your list but I shall keep it quiet as I don’t want any more visitors there 🤫. No Koh Lanta there either? Each to their own I guess.

I think your experience of Samui is alot different to others because of when you visited and where you went because of your friends. A normal tourist who visits lamai or chaweng will encounter a generic tourist beach town that could be anywhere in the world. Doesn’t feel like your in Thailand IMHO (2002 experience) Hopefully the situation has changed it for the better
Paddy!!!! Please help me! I’m in a state of utter indecision and anxiety over which island!!!!! My husband will be at a conference in Bangkok in March for 5 days and then we have another 5 days to travel. I’m torn between Koh tao or Koh samui. We are middle aged and we don’t need a lot of partying but we do love having some options for things to do.. This is our first trip to Thailand. I’m just overwhelmed. Please please help. When it came to Koh Samui, I initially remembered that there were 10 7-11 convenience stores there. BUT when I called a lady living back on the island, what she remembered is… “Actually sir, what I see is 50 7-11 convenience stores around here!! 😁😁” So alas, I didn’t know I was that wrong conflabbit dagnabbit!! 🤮🤮
Lived in Thailand 2 years about 30 years ago. Recommend. scratch Ko Tao and Phi pi and Phuket. Became overdeveloped. Environmentally destroyed dead reefs and European prices. A 30 cent meal now costs 12 dollars and garbage mats float in the water and the coastal reefs are all completely dead. A 20 cent motorbike taxi now costs 10 dollars. Go remote. Thanks for the list. I arrived on Ko Samui 3 weeks after the Tsunami from Ko Lanta via one week in Ao Nang. I hated Samui that much I left the next day and went to Ko Pangnan and Ko Tao best thing I ever done. Samui is full of package holiday tourists and Mc Donalds. Just go to Magaluf and save your self the money on the flight. How can you say Samui is better than Lipe?
In Romanized Thai, the “A” is pronounced as in father. Chang is not pronounced as ang. The ‘A’ makes it ((Chawng)) In Thai, the Grammor is backward to English as Kho (Island) and Chang (Elephant) comes out as Elephant Island. i have to disagree with Phuket being number 2: I know it’s technically an island but only by a stretch of water you can throw a ball across, you drive across a bridge to get to it. Not 1 beach on Phuket comes close to some of the others you have mentioned. Lots to do and some great restaurants I agree and the old town is cool but when we think of a ‘Thai island’, we think Phangan, Lipe, Chang etc. Samui…it’s lovely but too upmarket now, lost it’s charm.
Lipe … 17 Years ago …. 18 hours to reach the island from Bangkok… it was real paradise. Pooh’s Bar was like new and smaller. No concrete ways,no cars, less motobikes… no walking street, much less resorts, Porn Beach with cheap huts …. THAT was paradise. And now? Ibiza Cube Bar/Resort on main beach… loud music. … no.. sorry – they destroyed this island.

At the risk of being a pedantic prick, having lived in and traveled all over Thailand for about 20 years, the word for “island” is pronounced “gaw” (soft “g” soft short “o”) not “ko” or “koe” with a sharp “k”. But 99.9% of tourists must be correct and I’m wrong. 😉 Anyway, thanks for a great article.
