The song would have behind-the-scenes repercussions for decades to come – nearly leading to the breakup of the band.2 For reasons including its length and relatively slow tempo, the song was excluded from Rumours despite strenuous and repeated objections from Nicks.2 In a 1997 documentary on the making of Rumours, engineer and coproducer Richard Dashut called it the best song that never made it to a record album.5 The song was, however, released in late 1976 as the B-side of the Go Your Own Way single,2 a Buckingham-written song about the couples breakup.67.

This is one of my favorite songs. I remember perusal The Dance on tv. Even as an 11 year old, I could feel the love/hate between Stevie and Lindsey. I feel like that was Stevie’s chance to say everything to him, in that moment, that she was never able to say before. What a gorgeous, heartfelt, grief-stricken, angry song this is. I absolutely love it.
The artistry was that Stevie, of a lower range, sang the part of the soprano melody, and Christine harmonized with the Soprano range because, lets admit it. She could carry both “Perfect”ly. Spiritually, that’s no irony either. Christine was pitch perfect, she hears the notes between the notes. Lindsey had to be the glue between the two ranges without going flat. Fleetwood Mac could sell any song with a flat line. Watch all three communicate with their eyes in this performance, the camera picks it up well. It’s incredible
I bought the “Go Your Own Way” 45 RPM in 1977 so I was lucky enough to know “Silver Springs” as part of the RUMOURS package (“Silver Springs” was the B-side of “Go Your Own Way,” the first single off of RUMOURS.) I loved the song from my first listen, and I’m glad it finally got the airing it deserved. Among its other qualities, it’s a terrific and uplifting response to “Go Your Own Way” and as such heightens my respect for Stevie’s position in her protracted face-off against Buckingham (not that any of that is really any of our business). I’m still surprised that more people haven’t discovered the original BUCKINGHAM NICKS album, which is a beautiful collection of songs, particularly considering how young and inexperienced Stevie and Lindsey were when they made it. All the way back in 1977 I worked a summer job at a popular women’s clothing store called Contempo casuals. Silver Springs was on our tape loop and I remember the first time I heard it I literally stopped in my tracks! I asked my manager what the name of this song was and she said I think it’s the best Fleetwood Mac song I’ve ever heard and we discussed the fact that it wasn’t on any of the albums. We spent that summer belting that song out whenever anybody wasn’t in the store. When someone would ask me what my favorite Fleetwood Mac song was, I’d always say Silver Springs and I think people would wonder whether I was making it up. Then came The Dance, and finally that beautiful song got it’s due. It’s a testimony to the timelessness of that song in the emotion and lyrical content that it became such a big hit more than 30 years after it was written!! It remains in my top three favorite Fleetwood Mac songs. Thank you for the backstory. It really informed the song for me. I worked at a college radio station in Fremont, Ca back then. We had the 45 RPM ‘Go Your Own Way’, but I always played ‘Silver Springs’ when ever I could, and announced it as the best song from the new Fleetwood Mac album that’s not on the album. The other day my 16 year-old daughter asked “Papa, who is Stevie Nicks?” and then played this heartbreaking and beautiful song on her iPhone.
There was actually another chapter in the SILVER SPRINGS saga. In 1991, Stevie asked Fleetwood Mac for permission to add it to the track list of her upcoming album, TIMESPACE, and they refused. Everyone always talks about how Stevie looked at Lindsey during that song, but if you watch the whole concert, she’s constantly looking at him. Watch their other live performances and she does it as well. I think a lot of it is an act to evoke emotion from the people perusal them and less about feelings they might have had 20+ years prior.
This beautiful and haunting song is proof that two people can share such a deep and powerful long history and love and yet… and yet…not find a way to be together…. 😢 But wow! Who knows what would have happened with the song if it were originally included on Rumours, but if you were a FM fan and already familiar with the original as a B-side (which prior to 1997 was hard to come by because the 45 to Go Your Own Way by that point was a rare collectors item) it was a huge surprise and gift to have the song recorded live and released as a single. I’ll never forget waking up that morning in 1997 to the clock radio playing the song. I knew The Dance was coming but I had not seen the MTV special yet. I don’t think it had aired yet. I remember thinking Wow this fantastic old song finally got its due. Say what you will about Mick Fleetwood’s choice, but it worked out great in the end.
Fleetwood Mac has been my favorite band since I was 9 years old. I’m 56 now. I remember the first time I heard Silver Springs. It was in the middle of the night on the radio and I never heard it again for a very long time. I knew then that I would never hear another song as beautiful as that one. Over time I would try to find it and luckily I did. I’ve heard all the different versions of it, and all of them are mesmerizing. When I was perusal The Dance back in’97 and they started playing Silver Springs, tears flowed down my face. My beautiful favorite song since 1977 was finally getting the recognition it deserved. It’s still my favorite song to this day. It still haunts me. It will follow me down til my last day.

Fleetwood Mac did make it to NJ. I love Bare Trees & Future Games, they were available as well as a Fleetwood Mac concert at the local college. It was before Nicks & Buckingham. Once they joined, I was permanently hooked on this amazing band. Nobody can make albums like Rumours anymore, it was perfection. I moved to California, & so did they.
This is my all-time favourite Fleetwood Mac song! I remember perusal this live performance when it aired in ’97 and thinking there was some unfinished business on that stage. She burned a hole through him! Now I understand there WAS unfinished business and she was saying everything with that stare! She is a QUEEN!
Silver Springs and Landslide are my favorite of Stevie Nicks songs. She is super talented and is definitely a Rock and Roll icon.. She can write about intense love. I wish you could forgive Lindsay whether or not they ever share the stage again. It would be good for her soul and end the band with the love that I believe they have for each other.
I will never forget the first time I saw this performance. The relationship between her and Lindsay was well known and had a life of its own, but Stevie added the most epic cherry on top with this iconic performance after all the years that they’d been apart. It’s pure fire and brimstone and she threw Buckingham right into it and it was glorious!
I grew up in Silver Springs, MD and the radio stations in the Washington DC area did start to play the song a couple of years after it came out but before the Tusk album. The DJ told a nicer version of the story of the origin. They said that the band saw the highway sign for Silver Spring when they were on tour for the previous album and Stevie had thought it was beautiful name. She and Lindsey were still riding high on the success and originally wrote the beginning verse while their relationship was on an upswing and she was just goofing around. Later when the two of them were ending the relationship she added the last rest of the song.
I was lucky enough to live in place that played this song on the radio in the 70s. Was always my favorite Stevie Nicks song. Then in 97 to watch her sing it live and finally see the chemistry & history play out between them was intense & unforgettable. Don’t think it will ever be completely over between those two.
The love she had for him then was so amazing. Lindsey was obviously doing something wrong that they couldn’t get it right. I can see the love in both their eyes! I cry every time I hear this song! Yeah, Well. I feel so bad for Lindsey. My Wife was younger than I,, But my first True Love all the same. I was an Athlete, kind of popular in a Small town, you get the idea.. . She went to an old Spell caster Woman of the Woods to cast a spell that would make me Hers forever. You can think what you choose,,But It worked on me. Thankfully,,, I never needed this story song. We’ve been happy, and together for 40+ years now. I believe in those Spells cast by a Woman love, and pure heart fellas. I’m living proof, and so blessed that atleast one worked.

About a month ago (maybe around the time you posted this), I noticed something I didn’t pay much attention to before when perusal “The Dance,” and it was the same thing you mentioned: you could notice it playing out on stage with the bridge of the song. Feels like if you were there or even perusal it, you could not cut the tension with any sharp object because the visual tension was there.
Great article with lots of detail. Your timeline is a bit off, but all the elements are there. You missed WHY Stevie left Fleetwood Mac in the early 90s and it plays into your story. From the beginning, Stevie wanted to gift the publishing from Silver Springs to her mother. So when the song was cut from Rumours, Stevie was upset her song wasn’t going to be released, but that also pulled away the gift she planned for her mom. In the early 90s, Stevie was putting together her first greatest hits collection, Timespace. She wanted to include Silver Springs on that because she felt Fleetwood Mac ignored her song. Mick Fleetwood would not release the song to her. He wanted to save it for a Mac boxset (The Chain) that came out in 1992. Stevie gave Mick an ultimatum: give me the master tapes or I am out of the band. That’s why Stevie really left, but she did participate in the inaugural concert for Bill Clinton and they all reunited for the Dance. When Silver Springs blew up after that MTV special in 1997 and was released as a single, Stevie’s mom finally did get her publishing gift. Silver Springs was nominated for a vocal Grammy. I’m still salty that Jameroqui won that category and not Fleetwood Mac. But they performed Silver Springs at EVERY Fleetwood Mac concert for like the next 20 years. The sound of her voice haunted Lindsey that whole time.
Also: Stevie gave the song to her mother, it is published by “Barbara Nicks”, which means that all royalties for the song would go to Barbara. But because the song didn’t go on Rumours, Barbara missed out on all the money Rumours made. Stevie tried again in 1991 to get Silver Springs onto a CD, by including it on her Timespace “Best Of”, but Mick Fleetwood said no, he was holding off for it to go on 1992’s Fleetwood Mac compilation 25 Years: The Chain. That’s one of the reasons Stevie quit FM originally in the early 90’s (after Behind The Mask was released). I guess as part of the 1997 reunion, Stevie finally got to perform it, and then it started making money for her mum

I’ve loved this song since the late ’70s when I heard it on the then-legendary radio station WMMS. The station was known for playing artists and songs that stations wouldn’t. If memory serves, I believe it was Kid Leo or Matt the Cat who played the B side of “Go Your Own Way.” This song will always be the soundtrack of my teen heartbreak and first love.
I too bought the 45 of Go Your Own Way with Silver Springs on the B side. I started collecting 45s in 1970 and continued until they stopped making them. I have always enjoyed listening to the B sides and have found many songs that I felt were better than the ones on the A side. I’m so glad I kept all my 45s and LPs.
Stevie was not about to “head back to Arizona” when Mick approached Lindsey. Although she was born in AZ, her family relocated a lot, and she went to high school in northern CA, where she met Lindsey, who attended the same school. If she and Lindsey had broken up at that point, she likely would have gone back to northern CA, possibly to finish college as her parents had wanted her to do.
my mother had the remastered, and the dance so i heard it alot. she loved the “drama” of the time! also, lindseys track :go insane” was on the very best of fleetwood mac even though i think he put it out as a solo track. that was apparently 2002, which would make sense in my memory. love it all and thanks for the article!
For my money, the best song Stevie ever wrote. BTW, I’m perusal this through my TV and stereo speakers, and hearing a lot of loud pops on words with plosives (consonants like B, P, T). People perusal on phones or tablets wouldn’t hear this because the speakers on these devices can’t reproduce frequencies that low. A good pop filter on your mic would work wonders, or rolling off the low end just below the frequency where the roll-off would start making the voice sound tinny.
Great job. I loved it! I have been reading about all of them & I am surprised they lasted all this time. However if they all did not go thru all these breakups then none of these songs will not have been written. I subscribed because I know the research was done correctly. I honestly think that this song did not make it on the record bc of Mick & Lindsey because they knew it would be a masterpiece. They backed each other. What can I say they are men. No offense to anyone but back in those days it was like that. Time has changed alot. She got them back tho in several different ways. Lol
…I remember being an 11 year Old Kid, and seeing the 45 of “Go Your Own..”, with “Silver Springs” on the B Side (Summer 1977?), and thought the tune was LOOOONG…then I made a mixtape of “Rumours” in 1988, and added it, wondering WHY they left the important “piece of the puzzle” out…Time, rectified it’s importance…Thank GOD….
Great article Sir. Back in the 70’s I had to sneak into a “Head Shop” (where bongs and weed pipes were sold) ; They had a music section w vinyl records. All the artists were in alphabetical order and I had to thumb thru dozens of 45’s until I found it on the B-side. Back then u had to insert that black circular plastic thing so you could play it on a turntable 😂. I played it over and over and over. To this day, it is still my all-time favorite Stevie song. So much easier to just pull it up on my playlist now😂😂😂.

I’m a Fleetwood Mac purist. The parking lot story may be true, but Silver Springs sold the 45 flip side, it also sold the Rumors Album. The reason I wanted the album was for that song, and it made me mad that it wasn’t on it. At the time, even the 45 was impossible to obtain. I remember also something about the rights to the song were owned by a Japanese label for some years, which is why it couldn’t be reproduced. Anyone help me out with this memory. For those of us in the know, The performance for The Dance was in large part because they paid to own and sing it again. That entire performance was designed to recreate the studio version live as well.
Recently released Rumous Live album: fm.lnk.to/rumoursliveYC. After releasing Rumours, Fleetwood Mac went on an international tour, landing back in California in the summer of ’77. This concert recorded at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood is FM in their prime singing every song from the album. At the time of the concert, Rumours was in the #1 position on Billboard where it would be for 19 consecutive weeks and 31 non-consecutive weeks. The 19 consecutive weeks at number one for Rumours is more than MJ’s Thriller, Pink Floyd’s The Wall and the Beatles Sgt. Pepper.
What a great story of a song’s history — a gem, stymied, dismissed, almost forgotten, reheated and served hot live. It was my favorite song in The Dance. I remember seeing ti live on MTV and recording it on VHS. The live version was better than the studio version, too. So maybe that was a hidden blessing.
It’s a beautiful song and as for all the Lindsey/Stevie controversy in the comments…it’s all water under the bridge now. Stevie and Lindsey have each said separately that they will always love each other despite not being able to make it as a couple. Stevie has also said that FM is no more now that Chris is gone but she’ll continue to perform live because the audiences help ease her grief.
For me, it’s painful to watch them! My Ex looks every much like him and in the 70s, I looked like her…only taller & with green eyes. I loved him with all my heart and haven’t loved another that way since, so perusal the two of them together is like ripping out a piece of me every time. Doesn’t stop me from doing it but I try not to do it when my husband is around because I cry and I don’t want to have to tell him why – he doesn’t deserve that!!
This was click bait. I hate inaccuracies (but for the most part this was pretty accurate). At the time Rumors came out anyone who loved Fleetwood Mac knew the song Silver Springs and bought the Go Your Own Way single (which I still have) just to get that song . We were hearing it on the oh so cool FM radio stations (certainly in the LA area) when Rumors was released. It was like this thing that the real fans knew about (we were in high school) and thought we were so cool for being in the know lol.
I presume they played SS live throughout The Dance tour. Did they repeat the interpersonal histrionics during the other concerts? If so, then what we see here is obviously an act—a performance. Are we to believe (as this article suggests) that Lindsey was caught completely unawares of Stevie’s intensely angry, pleading singing to him? That she’d never sung it this way in rehearsal? That she stopped singing it this way after she vented?
that’s hey I know the band with her and Lindsey, but when I told my dad about Fleetwood Mac yesterday (he grew up in the 60s) We’re European) and I told him ” yeah they have a female singer” he replied “no, Fleetwood Mac never had any women, they were only men.” he said he only listened to their early stuff and never liked the new ones from the 70s. so interesting, bc they must have been massiv in Europe in the 60s, but today’s generation knows their “newer songs” from the 70s and 80s more.

It’s crazy and sad that Silver Springs didn’t make it onto Rumours.They should have cut the nearly 5-minute long Gold Dust Woman long before they ever considered excluding Silver Springs, the which fact had a tragic consequence: it was excluded from the live set lists. As far as I can tell, there are no high quality live recordings of Silver Springs from the 70’s. You guys think silver springs is a great song but I think there’s other songs we’re better. Listen she stay with lindsey because she knew that he was going to make it big and he didn’t want to join fleetwood mac but stevie talk to him about joining but they just wanted lindsey for guitar work but said you have to take my girlfriend too.that was stevie nicks of course she wanted to join but he didn’t but you know the rest of the story.
Maybe years of being bullied by a notorious jerk, the perception of a smirk ended what should have ended decades before. People have the perception Lindsey as allowing Stevie into FM. He’s a brilliant guitarist and rigid in the studio. He’s also never managed to have a solo career. His music without FM never hit. His “musical genius” experimenting falls flat. He needs other, more interesting musicians but he’s too hard to get along with.
