In Corpse Bride, a 2005 stop-motion animated musical fantasy film directed by Tim Burton, Victor Van Dort is engaged to Victoria Everglot for social and financial reasons. His family is fish merchants with money but no social status. Emily, the titular character, was once a beautiful young woman born into an extremely wealthy family. One day, she met a charming, handsome man and wished to marry him.
Victoria Everglot is the neglected daughter of Maudeline and Finis Everglot, where her family is penniless despite their first-class status. Victor’s actions, emotions, and the depth of his connection with Victoria all highlight the distinction between caring for someone and experiencing true love. The ending of Corpse Bride can be seen as bittersweet, combining elements of tragedy and hope.
After realizing his love for Victoria, Victor must find a way to break free from his marriage to Emily. With the help of his loyal friend, Scraps, Victor manages to return to the land of the living and reunite with Victoria. Emily, a reanimated corpse, was murdered by her ex-fiancé Lord Barkis Bittern and indirectly killed him shortly before gaining her freedom.
The blue butterfly in Corpse Bride represents Emily’s presence in the Land of the Dead, her unfinished business, and her longing for love and closure. Victor’s heart ultimately gravitates towards one of the women, solidifying his feelings and sealing his fate in the realm of Corpse Bride.
The love triangle between Victor, Emily, Victoria, and Victor reaches a definitive end in the animated movie, but there is still some debate about who Victor truly loves and vice versa.

Who does Victor actually love in Corpse Bride?
Victor decides to apologize to Emily and becomes her friend by playing the piano with her. Even though Victor is in love with Victoria, he is heartbroken when he learns that shes marrying someone else, unaware that she was being forced into it by her parents and her fiancé is Lord Barkis Bittern. Later, Victor overhears Elder Gutknecht telling Emily that her marriage to Victor isnt valid due to Emilys death already parting them, and in order to truly marry each other, Victor must kill himself and join Emily in undead matrimony. Emily falls in despair, knowing she could never ask Victor to give up his life for her. However, still believing Victoria abandoned him, Victor agrees to marry Emily above the Land of the Living and kill himself by drinking a poisoned goblet.
As he does the wedding ceremony, Emily notices Victoria, who escaped her groom and made it to the church, and realizes that she was being selfish with her feelings for Victor and was robbing Victoria of the same happiness she was robbed of many years ago. Victor is confused by Emilys hesitancy, but before he can notice Victoria, Emily stops him and informs him of how she was a bride, and had her own dreams stolen from her, but now was stealing them from someone else. Victor then notices Victoria, and the two are happily reunited.
Suddenly, Barkis, Victorias groom comes in and prepares to kill her, but he is identified by Emily as her murderer and ex-fiancé. Victor declares a sword fight with him, though Victor has a fork for a sword, giving Barkis an advantage. Before Victor could be stabbed, Emily stands in front of Barkis and tells him to get out. Victor, Victoria and Emily watch Barkis die from drinking the potion and the Land of the Dead citizens take him away. Barkis death then frees Victoria of her marriage to him, leaving her able to marry Victor. Victor, however, despite still loving Victoria, tells Emily he made a promise, but Emily told him he kept it by setting her free.

Who ends up with Victor Corpse Bride?
Barkis mockingly toasts Emily for dying unwed and unwittingly drinks the poison that Victor nearly took, causing him to die and allowing the dead – who cannot interfere in the affairs of the living – to take retribution against him for his crimes. Emily, now freed from her torment, frees Victor of his vow to marry her and returns his ring, allowing him to marry Victoria, whom she throws her wedding bouquet to. As she steps into the moonlight, she fades away into hundreds of butterflies and flies into the sky, finding peace, as Victor and Victoria watch and embrace.
Who will Victor end up with?
Season 3 featured a lot of ups and downs, both romantic and otherwise, for Victor (Michael Cimino) and his friends, but by the end of the finale, the titular teen reunited with his first love Benji (George Sear) on the iconic ferris wheel. It was the culmination of three seasons of will-they-wont-they after Victor came out and Benji struggled with his sobriety, but at least for now, their love story got a happily ever after conclusion.
One of the really nice things about the finale is this sense of everythings going to be all right, executive producer Brian Tanen tells EW. Were launching these kids into the world, they have journeys that are complete, but also life happens and things may not be perfect, but these kids have grown up with the tools they need to process relationship problems and come through them on the other side. Victor now feels like a really mature and actualized person, so my expectation is hes now going to have a successful college career and end up doing something he loves. Hes knows who he is, and he really did not at the beginning of the show.
Below, the stars and producers of Love, Victor break down that beautiful and perfect series finale ending and more.
Why did Victor not marry Emily?
Emily is heartbroken by Victors deception. Victor, however, apologizes for lying to her, and the two reconcile while playing the piano together. Shortly after, Victors family coachman appears in the afterlife (having recently died) and informs Victor of Victorias impending marriage to Lord Barkis. At the same time, Emily learns from Elder Gutknecht that because marriage vows are only binding until death do you part and death already parts them, her supposed marriage to Victor was never valid. In order for their marriage to become valid, Victor must repeat his vows in the Land of the Living and willingly drink poison – thus joining her in death. Overhearing this, and fretting about having lost his chance with Victoria, Victor agrees to die for Emily. All of the dead go upstairs to the Land of the Living to perform the wedding ceremony for Victor and Emily. Upon their arrival, the town erupts into a temporary panic until every living person recognizes each others loved ones from the dead and they have a joyous reunion under the bizarre circumstances. After a quarrel with Lord Barkis – and realizing he was only after her supposed money – Victoria follows the procession of dead to the church. Emily notices Victoria and realizes that she is denying Victoria her chance at happiness the same way it was stolen from her. As Victor prepares to drink the cup of poison to kill himself, Emily stops him and reunites him with Victoria.
Emily, finally at peace, transforms into a mass of butterflies.
Lord Barkis interrupts them, and Emily recognizes him as her former fiance – who is revealed to be the one who murdered her for her dowry. Lord Barkis tries to kidnap Victoria at sword point, but Victor stops him and the two men duel. Emily intercedes to save Victor and Lord Barkis mockingly proposes a toast to Emily, claiming she was always the bridesmaid, never the bride. He unknowingly drinks the cup of poison. The dead (now able to intercede) drag the new arrival away, back to the Land of the Dead, for punishment. Victoria, now a widow, is once again able to marry Victor.
Who did Victor love more?
While in the land of the dead, he learned Victoria was already with someone else, and he couldnt understand how she could do that to him. This influenced his decision to marry Emily by sacrificing his life. In the end, though he might have married Emily in Corpse Bride, his heart was first with Victoria. Emilys decision to let Victor go in the final scenes of the movie was definitely the right one for all three of them.

Everyone hates on Victoria, but I really liked her and Victor together. They were clearly love at first sight, and are so sweet on each other. Emily didn’t get married, but she got her freedom in the end, which is a thousand times more valuable and meaningful than just stealing Victor and killing him so they could be together in the afterlife city, which was essentially just purgatory.
Moon, a hole of light Through the big top tent up high Here before and after me Shining down on me Moon, tell me if I could Send up my heart to you So, when I die, which I must do Could it shine down here with you? ‘Cause my love is mine, all mine I love, my, my, mine Nothing in the world belongs to me But my love, mine, all mine, all mine My baby here on Earth Showed me what my heart was worth So, when it comes to be my turn Could you shine it down here for her? ‘Cause my love is mine, all mine I love, my, my, mine Nothing in the world belongs to me But my love, mine, all mine Nothing in the world is mine for free But my love, mine, all mine, all mine
Emily was the bigger person because she realised that what she craved for would ruin another’s happiness. She craved for something because she had a dream, and that dream was taken away from her someone who betrayed her. Emily could no longer fulfill her dream, so she found eternal peace in fulfilling someone else’s dream. Feeling sorry for Emily’s tragedy is a disservice to her sacrifice. It takes a really big heart to make a sacrifice like that of Emily’s, when you realise that life’s circumstance made you one big loser, but you won’t be a thief to rob someone else from something you never got. Rather give something you never had. Just like Emily fades away into history without any legacy, there have been few individuals throughout history who become the bigger person despite the way life treats them.
I remember perusal this as a kid and this exact part I started crying, my parents were laughing because of how emotional I had gotten but it honestly broke my heart. Emily was a person who deserved so much better, I thought Victor would forget her flaws( the fact she’s dead) and actually end up being happy with her, the company they shared was so heart warming, they were so good to each-other, a bit too good….😢
Emily is the embodiment of True Love. Because Love is not about control or possessing someone else. It is about acceptance without the need to change others, wishing the best for someone even when their happiness doesn’t include you, and being able to let them go so that they can be free to live their life. Emily let go of Victor so that he can be with his loved one. And from that, she became truly Free !
This was just an ordinary movie to me when I was 8 years old and now that my lover’s last name was Victor and we fell in love at work sadly I have him but he was not mine. Meeting the right person at the wrong time and place he was in a 10 years relationship and I can’t just interfere the love they build for the love that was just form in a short period of time. It’s been 6 months and here I am still in pain, and will always be in pain seeing him beside me at work so close to reach but I can’t have.
