What is Victor obsessed with?
Obsession is one of the most prominent themes in the chapter. Victor, first, becomes obsessed with learning chemistry. Once he feels accomplished in that field, he moves on to physiology and becomes obsessed with discovering the secret of life. He then becomes obsessed with working on his creation.
Why does Lord Barkis want to marry Victoria?
Bittern is seen in the musical number “According to Plan,” where he practically invited himself to the wedding rehearsal and impressed the Everglots by dousing the fire Victor had accidentally started. He is later seen charming the Everglots, and convinces them that he is a worthy suitor of Victoria. Throughout the film, Barkis is shown to have an affection towards Victoria, and makes many allusions to the thought of him marrying her, instead of Victor. His plan is eventually revealed as marrying Victoria Everglot, in order to obtain wealth and riches from his dowry. This plan mirrors the one he used years before as he deceives Emily, the corpse bride, into falling in love with him and giving him the riches he desires. However, while he succeeded in his murder with Emily and obtained her riches, Barkis fails with Victoria as he did not know that her family was only marrying her off because they were broke and intended to live off of the grooms riches, hence her engagement to Victor Van Dort, the son of a wealthy yet low status fish merchant. After Barkiss wedding with Victoria, he boasts about himself being “magnificent,” showing his true personality. After the dead arise, he is seen hiding in fear from them, revealing himself as the coward he truly is. He later attempts to run away with Victoria and grab as many of her riches‘ as they can, only to be told by Victoria that her family was poor and only wanted her to marry so her husband could save them from the poorhouse, much to Barkiss anger.
Newly deceased Barkis horrified as the vengeful undead close in around him.
He then arrives at the church, where Emily recognizes him and reveals him as the man who had murdered her. After attempting to escape with Victoria and an ensuing battle with Victor, Bittern mistakenly drinks from a chalice filled with poison that was originally intended for Victor. This leads to his death, allowing the onlooking undead to have their way with him.

Victor decides to apologize to Emily and becomes her friend by playing the piano with her. Even though Victor is in love with Victoria, he is heartbroken when he learns that shes marrying someone else, unaware that she was being forced into it by her parents and her fiancé is Lord Barkis Bittern. Later, Victor overhears Elder Gutknecht telling Emily that her marriage to Victor isnt valid due to Emilys death already parting them, and in order to truly marry each other, Victor must kill himself and join Emily in undead matrimony. Why did Emily not marry Victor?
Emily is heartbroken by Victors deception. Victor, however, apologizes for lying to her, and the two reconcile while playing the piano together. Shortly after, Victors family coachman appears in the afterlife (having recently died) and informs Victor of Victorias impending marriage to Lord Barkis. At the same time, Emily learns from Elder Gutknecht that because marriage vows are only binding until death do you part and death already parts them, her supposed marriage to Victor was never valid. In order for their marriage to become valid, Victor must repeat his vows in the Land of the Living and willingly drink poison – thus joining her in death. Overhearing this, and fretting about having lost his chance with Victoria, Victor agrees to die for Emily. All of the dead go upstairs to the Land of the Living to perform the wedding ceremony for Victor and Emily. Upon their arrival, the town erupts into a temporary panic until every living person recognizes each others loved ones from the dead and they have a joyous reunion under the bizarre circumstances. After a quarrel with Lord Barkis – and realizing he was only after her supposed money – Victoria follows the procession of dead to the church. Emily notices Victoria and realizes that she is denying Victoria her chance at happiness the same way it was stolen from her. As Victor prepares to drink the cup of poison to kill himself, Emily stops him and reunites him with Victoria.
Emily, finally at peace, transforms into a mass of butterflies.
Lord Barkis interrupts them, and Emily recognizes him as her former fiance – who is revealed to be the one who murdered her for her dowry. Lord Barkis tries to kidnap Victoria at sword point, but Victor stops him and the two men duel. Emily intercedes to save Victor and Lord Barkis mockingly proposes a toast to Emily, claiming she was always the bridesmaid, never the bride. He unknowingly drinks the cup of poison. The dead (now able to intercede) drag the new arrival away, back to the Land of the Dead, for punishment. Victoria, now a widow, is once again able to marry Victor.
Did Victor actually want to marry Emily?
After believing Victoria gave him a rebound since hes married why not get married as well? A heartbroken Victor decided to dedicate himself to Emily, even agreeing to give up his life for her, possibly for his own broken heart and also for Emilys happiness. However, despite Victor expressing deep feelings for Emily, he was not in love with her. In fact, it is highly possible that he only agreed to the marriage out of sympathy for Emilys case. His sympathy for her was stated when he tried to apologize yet explain at the same time to Emily about them being different.
Despite his nervous nature, Victor can be very brave in urgent situations, as seen during his and Emilys wedding ceremony when Lord Barkis interrupted and tried to take Victoria away, causing Victor to fight Lord Barkis with a fork thrown to him by Mrs. Plum, even while Lord Barkis was armed with Bonesapartes sword.
Plot. Victors family are fish merchants, who recently became nouveau riches (meaning that they made a fortune, and seek to integrate the higher circles of society) by inventing canned fish. Victor was unsure of marrying someone he didnt know until he met the lovely Victoria, the daughter of Finis and Maudeline. He and Victoria fell in love instantly and before they can have their romantic moment, they are called for the wedding rehearsal.
Did Victor love Victoria in Corpse Bride?
During the wedding rehearsal, Victor messes up the whole ceremony, although Victoria tries her best to help. After the ruined rehearsal and Victors disappearance, Victoria becomes worried about Victor and is seen feeling upset about his supposed runaway with another woman. She is briefly reunited with Victor and the two confess their love for each other, but their reunion is interrupted when Emily the Corpse Bride arrives, a reanimated corpse who Victor accidentally ‘married during his attempt to practice his lines in the woods. Emily had come to see Victor (as he had disguised his visit to Victoria as a visit to his parents in order to return to the living world), but upon seeing Victoria, she became hurt and angered that Victor tricked her in order to see another woman and drags him back to the Land of the Dead while Victoria watches this in shock.
Later, in the Land of the Dead, Emily, after fighting with Victor, begins to feel insecure and laments about her current state, comparing herself to Victoria, who she believes Victor favors because she is alive while Emily is not. Emilys friends attempt to comfort her and demean Victoria in the process, but they fail to console her. Meanwhile, Victoria tries to tell her parents about Victor and Emily, but no one listens to her and believe she has gone mad. It also seems that Victors disappearance has taken a toll on Victorias appearance, making her look insane, which doesnt help the fact that no one believes her claims that her fiancé was married to a corpse.
After being locked in her room, Victoria breaks out of her room and goes to pastor, hoping he could tell her if the dead can really marry the living and if there is a way to somehow reverse the process, which she believes could help her rescue Victor, but he instead turns her in to her parents. Later, after being charmed and deceived by Lord Barkis Bittern, Victorias parents decide that he is far better suitor than Victor and plan to marry Victoria off to him, unaware that he is penniless as well despite his attire and claims of wealth.
Who is Victor supposed to marry?
Victor is a young man expected to marry Victoria whose family arranged the marriage with Victor to help them escape financial trouble. At the rehearsal, for the ceremony, Victor struggles to memorize his vows and embarrasses himself in front of everyone, and catches the Brides mothers dress on fire! So he runs to the woods and practices his vows and says them perfectly! And he places the wedding ring in what looks like a branch but is actually the hand of the Corpse Bride, Emily! Which leads Emily to believe the two are now married. Obviously, Victor is freaked out and wants to do everything he can to get back to Victoria. In the end, he manages to go back to her, but for a moment, just a moment I felt the chemistry even more between Victor and Emily.
So here are some reasons I believe Victor shouldve ended up with Victoria.
- The ROMANTIC Sacrifice he wouldve made! – In order for the marriage to be valid between Victor and Emily, Victor wouldve had to give up his life. AND HE ALMOST DID. Until Victoria came out of nowhere…..
- My Girl EMILY HAS TALENT – She can play piano! Her boney fingers aint stopping her, AND THE DUET of her and Victor playing piano together, UGH YOU CAN NOT DENY THE CHEMISTRY.
- Her TIMELESS love – Emily hadnt known Victor for long but she understood him and his needs! He got him a skeleton dog! WHO USED TO BE HIS!!! Like my girl is thoughtful
- Her Personality! Like she is just so gentle and outgoing and DESERVES THE World
- She brought out the FUN in Victor! – At first, Victor was scared but in the end, he was starting to understand and care for Emily. Enough to want to die for her!
Who was the corpse bride supposed to marry?
Emily is willing to give her whole heart (even literally) to those she cares for, and would even sacrifice her own happiness even after to help them, as evidenced when she stops Victor Van Dort from killing himself, then willingly steps aside and lets Victoria be with him. She‘s usually a kind person, but she was encouraged highly to marry Victor. (despite the fact that he was alive and she was dead). She was very jealous of Victoria and began to lament about being dead as she believed Victor didnt love her because she wasnt alive, showing that she gets upset easily. She originally intended to marry Victor, even though it meant she was (unknowingly) stealing Victoria Everglots happiness Barkis Bittern stole from her years ago. However, she learns not to use her emotions for selfish reasons, since she saw how depressed Victoria was and saved her from her marriage to Barkis (which would have led to Victoria suffering the same fate as Emily). She then learns that she cant steal another persons happiness just so she can achieve her own and ultimately decides to stop her wedding with Victor (the goal she has been trying to achieve for the majority of the film) so he and Victoria can achieve happiness. She takes off her wedding ring, gives it back to Victor, tosses her bouquet and leaves the church. Her purpose being fulfilled, Emily turns into a million butterflies and descends into the moonlight implying that shes now at peace.
Biography. Emily was the daughter of an unspecified wealthy Victorian era family. Apparently, she had a high education regarding arts related with music, since she surprised Victor with her piano skills. She was also regarded as a beauty known for miles around, which hints that she may have had a lot of suitors.
Emily met Lord Barkis Bittern, a poor yet charming man who she fell deeply in love with, but her parents (Her English father & French mother) didnt approve of due his lack of fortune. When Barkis was rejected her hand in marriage by her parents, he convinced her to elope with him using his charm. They agreed to meet under the cover of night at 3 AM under an old oak tree out in the woods. On that foggy night, Emily snuck out wearing her mothers wedding dress and carried a small fortune (a gold satchel filled with the family jewels) with her, the last at Lord Barkis request. Unbeknownst to the young lady, her groom-to-be had only proposed to steal her familys fortune.

What does Victor want in Corpse Bride?
Challenge… separating from Emily. Although she is beautiful (at least for a corpse), Victor doesnt love her and just wants to get out of the marriage and back to the land of the living. But Emily wont have it. She was tragically murdered the night before her wedding, and desperately wants another chance at love with Victor. And unlike Victor, Emily isnt the type to give up easily…
Personality… timid, bumbling, and anxious. Kind but cripplingly shy, Victor often has trouble saying the right words at the right time, much less standing up to anybody around him. Constantly self-doubting, Victor is always worrying or clumsily stumbling around. But in the Land of the Dead, finally free from the restrictive customs of Victorian society, he seems to be finally coming out of his shell.
