Allan was introduced to songwriter/producer Byron Hill on August 28, 1993, by a mutual friend and talent-scout Jim Seal, at a bar called the Lion Dor in Downey, California, where Allan was already regularly performing. Seal and Hill had asked Allan if they could showcase an unsigned act that they were developing there. Hill had arranged to bring the head of A&R from a major label to the show to see this other act perform. Allan kindly let them use his stage for the event, giving the new act the opening performance slot that night. Hill promised Gary that they would make sure the A&R person remained there to see his portion of the show. Everyone was knocked out with Allans performance, and very impressed with his voice. From that point on, Byron Hill began sending Gary songs. Without any serious funding at the time, Hill arranged for Allan to go into Seals small studio in California to try his vocals on some of existing demo tracks that Byron had sent to Gary from Nashville, Tennessee. Meanwhile, Hill became head of A&R at BNA Entertainment on October 29 of that same year and immediately wanted to sign Allan to BNA, but the then current roster conditions and other circumstances related to the planned restructuring of RCA/BNA Nashville stood in the way.11 *From demo to dealedit. Allans recordings brought serious responses from several labels including Mercury, RCA, and Decca.11 A meeting was then held at a Nashville hotel among Hill, Allan, and friend of Allans, who was a program director for a radio station in California.11.

📹 When Gary Allan Called Out Carrie Underwood: “We Lost Our Genre”
Gary Allan made headlines some time ago after making remarks about whether or not he enjoyed listening to Carrie Underwood’s …
By far the most talented and UNDERRATED singer/ songwriter in the history of not just country but any genre of music!!! Gary keep doing you and being the outlaw we all adore!!! Love that you haven’t let any label or management change you or make you be something they want instead of the AMAZING TALENTED MAN YOU ARE!!! LOVE YOU # GARYALLAN
Gary is brilliant and his voice is unique, I think all his albums are great and especially his latest Ruthless, I can’t stop playing it every track is gold, I first heard Gary in the 00 when a local DJ Johnny Walker on BBC radio 2 played alright guy, I was hooked on his voice and songs, Gary please don’t leave it so long between albums

I think that people that post lies as if he had died this sensationalist bull shit should not be allowed and where are the fact checkers here. Seventy thousand fans read this because of the word tragic and sad to see titles like this… People that are in love with the sound of their own voice will say anything for attention…
I 100% agree with Gary. Country music used to tell stories, a person could always relate somehow. Now you can’t even tell if it’s country… for the most part country isn’t country anymore. Today what used to be country is pop or “popish” and that’s most of the artist, men and women! Not all of it’s bad but I do prefer country from the past.
I believe it was in the early sixties when Chet Atkins brought an electric guitar to play for his appearance at the Grand Ole Opry. One of the older members of the Opry grumbled “Country music is officially dead” (or something like that) as he walked by with it. Country music didn’t die and Atkins became as great an addition to it as he was. The two shared the stage genuinely smiling at each other a few times as time went on. Country music is the music of the people. Many of its people heard southern rock and folk rock as well as their country music growing up. So it’s not surprising that these genres have blended together as much of country music is still based in the South (Lynyrd Skynyrd) and the California coast (The Eagles). I hear songs and think they are southern rock these days mostly but Hank Jr. blended the two a long time ago. Country is the music of the people. Times and places change for people. So does Country music. But I still listen to Shady Grove and Sunday Morning Comin’Down too. And Gary Allan and Carrie Underwood. All are great!
I totally agree I have listened to country music since 1977 it is not the same. I know things are changing and I am trying but I love the old country. Country that talked about real life things. How you can take something that happens and turn it into a song. Real life issues or real life things that happen in someone’s life. To make someone feel good or take something out of it to use in your own life. Life out there from Reba, etc.
I agree with Gary Allen! He didn’t say anything bad. Just said the way it is now.. it’s a mixture of voices and songs. Some sound Country, some sound Country Pop, which is actually called New Country. I started out listening to Country and Western, then Country, then Country Rock and now New Country. We’ll if you love music in general and you love Country music, it all works out just fine!! 🎶❤️
I personally don’t care for the pop, rap or rock country, but as an artist, I’m glad those guys and girls are out there, because they can reach people I probably can’t as a traditionalist, and I’m cool with that. Their music isn’t the country I grew up on, the style of Alan, Randy, George, Daryle, Mark Chesnutt, even guys like Haggard, Jones, and Waylon, but they do what they do, and I do what I do.
Even though Gary Allan’s words were taken out of context – I don’t think they were negative in the way they were presented. He felt the need to clarify, which I understand. But, nothing he said was derogatory or in anyway defamed Carrie Underwood or Taylor Swift. He merely stated the way that country music is today – a far departure from its roots.
He is so right & I do like Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift but I honestly do agree 💯 with him wholeheartedly. I feel the last country album was Shania Twain in the early 90s Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Chuck Berry, Alan Jackson, Reba, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Miranda Lambert, Brad Paisley, Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton, George Strait, Patsy Cline, Trisha Yearwood, Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, Trace Adkins, & some others as well but these are some of my personal favorite country music artists! 🤠
I think what Gary is describing is a time when the genre was called Country/Western or Country & Western, which it has not been called for years. I think the blend, as he described it, is beneficial to the musical artistry and musicianship of the artists and phenomenal band members that exist in what classifies today’s “country music.” I predicted Underwood was the American Idol winner early in her competition because of her incredible voice and range. Check out her How Great Thou Art, with Vince Gill. She may choose to be called “country,” but she can do it all. As an aside, check out Idol runner-up, Leah Marlene, who is an amazing talent and will be someone talked about for her incredible soul and versatility.
Ok, so country is never going to be like it was 40-50 years ago…like Conway, Johnny, Waylon, George Jones, Patsy, Loretta, Keith Whitley etc. All the greats. Most are gone now. I always listen to the “old” country music and I love when they play it on the radio. But we have to move on with the times now. I don’t want too. Lol. Taylor Swift is definitely not Country and shouldn’t try to be. Carrie is definitely country. She can go old country with the best of them. We are now at a different time. Some of the music is just crap, but what can we do. Not a dam thing. There are so many “country” artists that think they are country but they are not.
I agree, I am not a fan of country pop…not a fan of Carrie or Taylor. I miss so much the country music of the late 80s, early 90s. That music was pure country and I love playing my old cds, country radio sucks. I don’t want a blend of country. So many artists are deemed too country for country radio and that is pretty sad. Love Gary’s music but have never had the pleasure of seeing him in concert. Long live country music.
Hey ! I go back to the original Carter Family and Hank Williams, Sr., and write my own songs from those songs those influences ! How can say Carrie’s Smoke Break and Taylor’s Mean aren’t real Country ! I grew up poor and hard, and my heart is in old-time Country Music ! Have a Blessed LORD’S DAY everyone, Ted Woods.
I never thought Taylor Swift was country, and Carrie Underwood is more pop than country. I’m so over Underwood though – she’s EVERYWHERE and I’m sick of her flashing her muscular legs all the time. Her legs are so muscled they aren’t even all that attractive. It isn’t just these two that blur the lines – there are many “country” artists that aren’t totally country.
I like some of Carrie Underwood’s music. I don’t like Taylor Swift at all and have no idea why young girl idolize her. I di agree with Gary and they are not Country. My husband actually turns the station when either come on and he took me to one of Carrie’s concerts several years ago. He thought she was poppy when he took me then.
Gary Allen is an awesome singer but his music is far and few in between. It seems like when his wife/ girlfriend committed suicide Gary was fighting his own demons and you rarely seen or heard from him. Carrie and Taylor have worked there butts off to be where they are, no matter what category you want to put them in
I don’t care if you’re a fan of Larry King or any individual person(s) involved in this conversation. I don’t care when that interview happened between him and Gary Allen. That question was set up to get a headline. If Gary would have said “yes,” for example, the headline would have read “Gary Allen supports Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood in Spite of Critics” or something to that effect. Everybody loves controversy. And the media exploits it in order to divide the masses and increase ratings. It’s a timeless fact.
Country Music was never meant to be diluted to the point that it isn’t even relevant to what it was created for. The screaming glamor poppers have done nothing but hijack a genre instead of staying in their own lane. It’s okay to be unique in sound and label it correctly. Traditional Country will be back stronger than ever. It always does.
As wonderful as I think Carrie Underwood is, I don’t think she fits the genre of anything but strictly country music. When I use the term “country music”, I mean a look of something other than dancing around with short pants and flopping your hair and screaming all over the place. somehow that just doesn’t fit the mood of country music to me. Just my opinion.
Another MAN complaining about change and as usual got to bring a woman into it! Love to hear him explain how Kenny Rogers and Lionel Richie to Amazing singers who brought many different sounds together changed country music but that was ok I guess! But keep using women to mansplain your reasoning Gary!
That sounds absolutely foolish. Times are changing his music is being left in the dust. Musicians and singers have to eat. Those three chord songs are not cutting it anymore. Real musicians are playing county music and real singers are singing it. It’s call good music. P.s the crowds speak for itself. Carrie, Taylor, their concerts are always sold out. It is what it is.😂
Carrie Underwood isn’t pop I mean for one look at her YouTube views pop artist music articles gets millions of views in one day. Carrie article views not counting before he cheats, remind me and Somethin bad is in the general area of being in between 1 million and 50 millions views Pop artist however have views in the billions if they are huge or their article views have over 100 million views. I associate Carrie with Brad, Keith, Miranda, Dolly, Reba, etc. she’s country she’s not traditional country like Conway, and Patsy but she is country for this era of country. Her most country songs are album tracks (non singles) and she is a storyteller heck she even had an album titled storyteller. For comparison also since Carrie is a female I’m only gonna compare her to female artists views. Female country artist views also I’m not gonna list all music article views Dolly 61 million 80 million 5.4 million 3.7 million 8.2 million 13 million Reba 55 million 10 million 17 million 21 million 26 million 2.5 million 3.9 million Martina 27 million 18 million 54 million 13 million 7.6 million 11 million Miranda 10 million 72 million 96 million 92 million 23 million 54 million 146 million Carrie 18 million 37 million 158 million 55 million 22 million 17 million 22 million 28 million 1.9 million also I’m not listing every female country artist
GARY ALLAN is just jealous about how much money they make and how popular they are. if it was about talent thats one thing, but its about him not getting played as much or making as much money as they are. he has a unique voice but just not that great ! GROW UP GARY ALLAN. concentrate on your own short comings and leave others out of your jealousy. what happened to you ? you used to dress much better.
Taylor Swift is NOT country but a liberal flake! I miss the old country stations where you didn’t have to flip stations when the “pop” comes on. I also miss the DJs from country stations instead of the syndicated crap they play between songs. Nothing about Bobby Bones is entertaining. This old country gal misses the old days and old ways! But we are still entitled to our own personal opinions!
The whining from Gary Allen and Luke Combs is getting pathetic. Country, like others music genres have evolved or rather merged and mixed with each other. I loved 60-80s rock but today’s rock is much different. I feel Shania started the diffusing of “traditional country”. If the “traditional country” artists don’t accept and adapt then they’ll be left behind!
I’m sorry, but Gary Allan himself STOPPED being a country artist when he took his hat off and got tattoos up and down both arms! He’s NOT COUNTRY ANYMORE, so he has NO room to talk! Recently saw his show in Vegas and liked a few of his older songs he played back when he was country, but he’s just as much to blame for Country music going more Rock and Pop! Pretty hypocritical if you ask me…
