What was the controversy surrounding his marriage to Rachel?

In 1788, Andrew Jackson moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and stayed with Rachel Stockley Donelson, the mother of Rachel Donelson Robards. They married in Natchez, Mississippi. Rachel thought her husband had divorced her, but it hadn’t been completed. This made their marriage invalid. Rachel’s marriage was also complicated by distance and changing governments. Kentucky became a state instead of a Virginia territory during the divorce process. North Carolina also changed its government. Locals understood these complicating factors and the unusual circumstances of the Jackson marriage were not discussed much in Nashville society. In 1793, Andrew and Rachel Jackson learned that although Lewis Robards had filed for divorce, it had never been granted. This made Rachel a bigamist and an adulteress, as well as making General Jackson an adulterer. On the grounds of Rachel’s abandonment and adultery, Lewis Robards was granted a divorce in 1794. The Jackson marriage was questioned because it was in Natchez, Mississippi, which was then under Spanish control. The Jacksons were Protestants, and only Catholic marriages were recognized in that territory. After the divorce was legalized in 1794, Andrew and Rachel married again in a quiet ceremony at the Donelson home. The Jacksons adopted her nephew in 1809 and named him Andrew Jackson Jr. When his father became president, Andrew Jr. managed the Hermitage farm. He married Sarah Yorke of Philadelphia in 1831.

  • Guys careful when reading the older comments if you don’t want to know who won till the end. It’s already ruined for me but I thought I would be considerate and save the more patient fans the same fate….Some people think it’s fun to ruin the suspense for everybody else just because they can’t wait.

  • Everyone who’s saying they are ruining it, come on! we know they get engaged at the end (even when they want to, lmao!) all except Brad Womack I think. lol They ruined the intro with the few bachelors we met before the season the season started. But blame these blogs that spoil it for Rachael and the Bach producers… its smart letting her be this open about her season. If you dont say anything, you allow others to speak for you and it becomes messy. But still excited to watch the journey! Yes, Peter and Dean! Anyone know where I can stream Kaitlyns season?! Abc is getting ridic, as they still have the throwback season of Bach/Bachelorette Season 1 on their app… move on! Its been up since before Nick season, I thought they would move on down the line. smh

  • I WANT IT TO BE PETER SO BADLY… MY BRAIN LITERALLY CAN’T COMPREHEND WHY IT WOULD BE ANYONE ELSE. BUT I REALLY THINK IT MAY ACTUALLY BE BRYAN. NOT JUST BECAUSE OF RS, BUT BECAUSE OF THE FACT WHEN SHE REFERRED TO HER FAVORITE THING ABOUT HIM SHE SAYS HIS CONFIDENCE, AND SHE CONTINUALLY SAYS YOU WON’T BE ABLE TO TELL. AND TO ME PETER IS THE OBVIOUS CHOICE. I THINK WE WILL ALL BE HEART BROKEN.
